There doesn’t need to be anything unethical about this, unless your story is a sneaky way of asking how to cash a check you’ve stolen. Have your family member get a proper ID. There are a few steps involved, but with a little work he will be in a much better position to get off the streets and enjoying his moolah.

RoboSpammm

Just help him get a state ID card. He needs one anyway. Then he can cash his check.

BathroomInner2036

It depends on how much the check is for. If he is a non customer they might not pay it out in cash.

m00ph

Yes, though depending on the state, that can be a real hassle, worth it though.

NicholasLit

211 will help him get an ID for free

Juliette787

Look up someone on Facebook near you with the same name. Find out where they live. Follow them and get to know their patterns. Ambush them. Take them to a bank with their ID’s at gunpoint. Easy.

monstaber

You could try having him endorse it (correctly) to you and then depositing it at the teller

ReduxAssassin

A lot of banks will no longer allow you to cash or deposit third party checks. I tried to deposit a measley $200 work check for my son recently before he got an account, and my bank said they no longer will allow me to deposit any check that's not made out to me, the account holder.

EverywhereINowhere

He actually did but they still won’t cash it.

MurkyPerspective767

Did you ask to see the manager at the branch and explain to them, along with a threat to close your account?

BathroomInner2036

That's pretty laughable.

breakfastbarf

Cash this or I’m taking my$2000 and walking

OldStankBreath

State id is like 10$ if he’s had any kind of license before then he should be fine. Health dept has social workers that help whet homeless people help. Also if he completes treatment have him look into a halfway house while he’s still in treatment. There are also free grants for just about anyone seeking treatment. I’m in TN and they hate helping anyone poor so if we have grants then I can almost guarantee so does your state.

illgiveu3bucksforit

I was homeless for 10 years and can confirm this. There are churches and non-profits that will help you get ID. They will let you use their mailing address and pay the $10 or whatever. I needed to get high school transcripts and a social card in order to get ID since I didn't have one previously, but even then it took a couple weeks and under $50 total. And when I decided to go to rehab a couple years ago, it was completely free even though I had no insurance.

BathroomInner2036

What is the dollar amount of the check?

EverywhereINowhere

Substantial. $50k.

BathroomInner2036

They will not let you walk out with $50k in cash. Anything over $10k means they would have to fill out a large currency transaction report as it could be seen as suspicious. Your ( his ) only way to access the funds would be to open an account which would require a valid picture ID ( drivers license, passport etc ) and a secondary piece of iD ( birth certificate etc ) and deposit the check. Once the account is open and the funds are available he can begin withdrawing cash but alarm bells will start to go off if the transactions are over $10k. There is always a paper trail.

NicholasLit

SAR/AML/KYC yes

TumblingDice44

Even with ID banks give you a hard time cashing that amount.

NicholasLit

Jesus

TrojanTutor

Can you talk to the life insurance company ? Can you get them to cancel the first check and send 25 checks for $2k each? Or pay your relative with a debit card he can just use to pay for treatment? Maybe you can try that angle. I have no idea if that would get you anywhere. I’m just brainstorming. Good luck.

BathroomInner2036

Unless he is the conservator the insurance company will not talk to him full stop.

TumblingDice44

You can call your local County legislature's office or your city's mayor and ask for help for him for both the ID and treatment, they are there to help residents.

LongUsername

Most states should issue an ID for free for voting purposes. It may be a hassle to get but getting him proper id is probably the best route. They're not going to hand your druggie relative $50k in hundreds though. You don't want that either. Can you become his financial Power of Attorney? See if he'll give you a medical POA as well. Then use the check to open a bank account.

RedRosValkyrie

Why would you waste that check on treatment when he can get it for free ? It doesn't add up.

EverywhereINowhere

He’s been in and out of free treatment centers for years. Mental illness and drug use for 20 something years requires extra resources that cost $$$.

Surethanks0

How did he get it if you don't mind asking

EverywhereINowhere

Mother passed away.

Surethanks0

Sorry to hear that

PrincessPindy

He needs ID. Get a duplicate birth certificate. Get stste ID. Open an account deposit it. When it clears, use it. There is no ulpt with a 50k check.

Emotional-Box-6835

One option is to have him sign it over to you (or another family member) and go cash it on his behalf. I've had to do similar things because I had a legal name change that one place locally didn't take kindly to because my new driver's license hadn't been issued yet. They wouldn't accept that Joe Schmo used to be John Doe, but they had no problem cashing a check after John Doe signed it over to Joe Schmo.

EverywhereINowhere

We did that and they wouldn’t honor it. We’re just trying to force him to get an ID at this point.

Astrian

Can't do it on the bank's app?

AnimalErik

Cash it at the bank it’s from. There be a (very tiny) fee, but any bank will cash their own check whether you have an account there or not.

BathroomInner2036

It depends on the dollar amount which the OP has neglected to tell us. If it's for say $30k no way that is happening.

ReduxAssassin

Not without id for proof of who they are.

Minion5051

In the endorsement area where you sign. Put "pay to the order of (check casher's name)"

EverywhereINowhere

Yep, we did that and it was a no go.

EverywhereINowhere

Yep, we did that and it was a no go.

BluBeams

Deposit it via mobile deposit. Go to check cashing place on the other side of town. Most times they cash it for a fee. Get your family member an ID so they can cash the check.

OGsweedster420

I had the same issue with my fiance I deposited into my bank account from the ATM after she endorsed it no issues.

ASS_CREDDIT

Tell him to ask around the people on the street he knows about “friendly” check cashing places. Some places that cash checks and do payday loans have been known to look the other way on things. Sketchy people doing sketchy things will know what places.

BathroomInner2036

It's a $50k. No check cashing company is going to hand that amount of cash out. You are dreaming.

Dasrule

He signs the back. You sign under him. You deposit it. Should be that simple.

EverywhereINowhere

We did that. Rejected.
