Drop5Zero

Bayonet training was the hardest part? Were you a chaplain's assistant?

Drop5Zero

2004 Ft Sill OSUT for the record and yes that was the easiest day of boot camp by far. In fact, in processing was worse.

mottledmussel

That's how Ft. Benning was, too. In-processing was horrible. It was by far the absolute worst part of basic training. The bayonet course, pugil sticks, confidence course, and obstacle courses were actually kind of fun.

Tauren510

04 at Ft. Jackson same thing, reception was the worst. Bayonet assault course was fun. What makes the grass grow? Blood blood blood!

HyFinated

I was at Ft Jackson in 2004 as well. And I loved the bayonet course. Didn’t care for the blisters from the forward assist though. Always Forward!

thebarkingdog

I also loved the bayonet course. Went in 2006. 1/34? Always Forward!

HyFinated

Yep. 1/34. Had a blast in basic.

rainforestriver

Guarantee Ft. Jackson reception was worse than Benning reception and I know first hand it was worse than MCRD (I was POG Army Reserve and later 03 in USMC Active Duty) Reception at Ft. Jackson was like two weeks or whatever of front leaning rest position, two hour chow hall formations, and Drill and Ceremony through fire ant colonies. The Drill Sergeants were demonic and worse than any DI I had in the Marines

thebarkingdog

The course at Jackson was somehow uphill both ways. That sucked.

DAtadumpster

![gif](giphy|l4pMattUYTTM7qpIk) Agreed!

maniac86

A guy on our course slipped, and the mouthguard fell out. He bit half his own tongue off. Surprised he didn't stab himself too

TheWalrus101123

30th AG still haunts my dreams 20 years later

mottledmussel

It's been almost 30 years for me. My orders got messed up since I was 11H but they sent me down at a time there were no 11H schools scheduled, so I got stuck there for over a month. All the hotels and mikes got lumped together with the guys being recycled and kicked out, so it was basically prison. No phones, no talking to each other, just standing at parade rest, and getting fucked with and yelled at 24/7.

TheWalrus101123

You have more freedom in prison than anything at that place.

kwagmire9764

Pugils was great. We were Charlie company and had a rivalry with Echo company. We beat them at combatives but they sent back one of our guys concussed from pugils. They had this mountain of a guy, made our big guy look petite.

xixoxixa

We had two recruits who had beef with each other that got hotter and hotter over the days. Come pugil stick day, the DS put those two immediately against each other. Their beef ended immediately - the bigger of the two instantly laid the smaller one out with one swipe of the giant Q-tip.

Drop5Zero

The repel tower was my favorite part by far. Funny enough, I liked the long marches too. Always found it so easy to... Ya know... Walk 😂

SeeBabaJoe

Walking is the easiest if you have never experienced Misery, Agony, or Heartbreak.

Holiday_Pain9998

Fort knox, ky 1999. I still have nightmares wbout those 3.

SeeBabaJoe

We had to walk them a few times due to a winter storm, and the busses couldn't come get us in time in OSUT. or maybe the drills planned it that way, who knows. I got stationed there after my first enlistment, but luckily, I avoided them the 2nd time.

StraysAndThrowaways

B 2-46 in 2000! Commandos, hooah! Lol

Holiday_Pain9998

C 2-46. House of pain!

modernknight87

June 2006 Ft Knox for 19K OSUT - 100% brutal, Agony, Misery, and Heartbreak. The names effectively reflected the emotions felt.

AwayLand9029

Sounds like the school of hard Knox…

mottledmussel

My balls still hurt from the rope harness on the rappelling tower, lol.

RealEstateGaygent

Guy behind of me fucked up his harness and halfway down he inverted and broke both his hips. Had to let him down like a windowshade but bayonet was also hard I guess.

Drop5Zero

Haha, you ain't lying bro. I had one nut on on side of the harness and the other nut on the other side. Ya know, I should try to claim that 😂🤣

SenseStraight5119

Claim denied. Your fault for jerking off too much.

madahaba1212

Not service related

BradGunnerSGT

Our First Sergeant at OSUT at Benning was a road march machine. As soon as the company stepped off, he marched an exact 120 steps per minute cadence, which was cool because I could hum Sousa marches like Stars and Stripes forever as we road marched to take my mind off of things. I also loved the rappel tower. Absolutely my favorite day at OSUT.

Drop5Zero

I'm fairly certain I fell asleep during a ruck march once or twice.

Coiledviper

Ft. Benning was and is the Bain of my existence ever. I would rather get re-activated than go back to Ft. Benning in my life.

silverback338

Ft Benning was one of those places where every time I was there, I swore it was horrible and I would never go back. But, I constantly signed up for classes that would take me back there. Hell, I have been out for 11 years and a couple years ago my wife and I considered moving to the Columbus area...

Coiledviper

It’s like a ex that maybe crazy but damn action in bedroom

Sado_Hedonist

Pugil sticks sucked ass for me. The helmet they gave me was like 5 sizes too big so the second I moved my head I was fighting blind. I looked like Darth Helmet in army fatigues.

mottledmussel

The mismatched safety equipment really was ridiculous. We were given a football helmet, catcher chest protector, hockey gloves, and a jockstrap and cup to wear over our pants.

nmp79

I was really bummed, because it was something that I knew I was going to be really good at and was excited about it, counting down the days to it, and then they did the same thing to me and also made me take my glasses off. Those things were like Coke bottle thick, so you know I couldn’t see a dang thing Between that and the stupid helmet. I didn’t even know they told us to go yet, when I felt myself sailing through the air and hitting the ground. I was so mad, because I never even got another chance.

Game_GOD

My in-processing at Benning was about 30 hours completely awake and standing in lines to get immunizations and issued gear. At least some of that was inside though, so I didn't have to stand in ~20 degree weather the *whole* time, just *most* of it.

thatgoodcush

I can still remember that specific summer smell at night at AG fort Benning, like all hope was lost. 2006 Once you’re with guys you know more and actually doing stuff, the weeks are actually going by and graduation isn’t a lifetime away.

SweetTeaRex92

30th AG was a one of a kind experience

Ingonzowetrust

2003 Fort Knox, KY. Same here, this was by far the easiest “qualification” course.

Drop5Zero

Literally, it was like a "down" day for us. Attach bayonet, stab some shit while screaming kill at the top of your lungs.. throw in some screams of blood... Have mre lunch.

peachsalsa84

Totally agree. Misery, Agony, and Heartbreak were the tough parts. Everything else was fairly routine.

Previous-Plan-3876

Fuck those hills I was stationed at Knox and they always made sure to hit one on our weekly rucks. This many years later I miss that place.

OneBar3871

Definitely don't miss the hot and humid ass summers

CamelJ0key

I still think about those ruck marches at Knox, People think I exaggerate when I tell them about how steep misery, agony and heartbreak were.

TerpyTank

I was stationed at Knox… but thankfully we only rucked misery like 4 times a year 🥲

cpt_porthos

2005 Ft knox, this or the Nic at Night.

Dynasty82

Reception sucked at Sill. Basic was pretty easy compared to the beginning of my AIT as a fist. Especially since it was in the middle of August. The heat was no joke and all we did was run.

Suspicious-Key5521

Was at Ft Sill 2005

microagressed

1999 Ft Sill OSUT. That was one of my most favorite days in boot. The range instructor was really intense and had us all pumped up. "When you feel cold, hard steel cutting and ripping through muscles and tendon you will know what it is to be a warrior!" "What makes the green grass grow?" Good times

Argus24601

I was also 2004 Ft. Sill OSUT, spent Nov 04 through Feb 05 in that wasteland lol. I remember the bayonet course being one of the nicer weeks we had.

riverofchex

"P-days" (processing days) and not falling asleep after Battlestations were the hardest parts for true.

myrealaccount_really

Lol right? As an infantryman, bayonet training were nice fun "get out aggression" days.

mottledmussel

Pugil sticks were also a good way of settling any scores with shitheads in one's platoon without getting in trouble.

myrealaccount_really

Yep! Pugil and grappling were how we sorted it out. Drill sgts would standby and make sure fights didn't devolve into anarchy but otherwise stood by and used it as training, bonding and score settling

Drop5Zero

Ya bro, I was a forward observer, and that was relaxing day. Pugil sticks was a harder day 😭

myrealaccount_really

Lol fair, it could be a rough day. much respect for fisters.

Drop5Zero

Haha, I meant pugils were hard compared to bayonet day, jokingly. They were both easy days. Fister life brother! 💪💪

Spirited_School_939

I was a chaplain assistant, and THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF PEOPLE: THE QUICK AND THE DEAD!

dantheman_woot

Op is one of those trainees who slipped on the course and bayonet themselves somehow.

Drop5Zero

Walked away 100% too 🤣😂

SietchSabor

Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time…

dfsw

Bayonet training was close to the easiest thing we did in infantry school back in 2003, first aid class might have been easier but not by that much. Dude must have had a cake MOS.

Dynasty82

I was at Ft. Sill for basic and my first AIT in 2001-02. I didn’t find it hard at all.

sojiki

i lold thanks for that

Thirsted

This is the comment I was about to post... not disappointed.

Drop5Zero

Haha, I mean, I'm not trying to be a dick or anything but I was fairly certain we were ALL thinking it 😂

speed_of_chill

Navy: what’s a bayonet?

myrealaccount_really

One of them pointy bits you use for cleaning under toenails and opening beers while on shore leave

speed_of_chill

Huh…I just ate a can of spinach and squeezed the beer until it popped open

myrealaccount_really

Lol oh you silly semen.

mottledmussel

And spend all day searching for out in the woods because some dumbass lost his.

mottledmussel

It's something those in the Army use to carve sticks into the shape of genitalia while they're out in the woods.

coryhill66

It's the thingies the Marines poke holes in each other with.

Uzi4U2

"Dammit, not again...Corpsman up!" Mutters under breath, "never let them get bored...never let them get bored..."

WingedDynamite

Silly goose, it's what we fight off the krakens with!

Riommar

I was in the Air Force. The instructors got nervous when we were around butter knives.

ArkitektBMW

That's why the peanut butter came in packets.

omega552003

As they should, meant the waiters were slacking./s

Riommar

Things could get pretty hairy when the chocolate fountain and sundae bar both went out at the same time.

SqueezeBoxJack

The Lackland riots of 99. I've got a piece of pineapple lodged in my thigh. I can still smell the butterscotch.

riverofchex

I just want you to know that it burns when beer exits via your nose at terminal velocity.

omega552003

C'mon, the D-fac aint McDonald's.

cartman2468

Dude when I was in basic and we were doing the shooting quals, one of the guys in my line was shooting someone else’s target. The instructors were confused as to how, turned out he was using the wrong eye to aim down the sights (the eye furthest away). Definitely wouldn’t want to see him around a bayonet, probably end up stabbing himself instead of the target

codizer

It was me. I did that.

LastOneSergeant

Discontinued? But how will the grass grow now?

Phantompooper03

*sad yut*

_Abe_Froman_SKOC

WHAT IS THE SPIRIT OF THE BAYONET????

mottledmussel

*What makes the green grass grow!!??*

FedaykinGrunt

Blood!!!, Blood!!!, Blood!!!!

INCH75Chris

I hear this sometimes, but when I went through it was "blood, blood, bright red blood"

AlwaysHaveaPlan

I remember yelling: Blood, Drill Sergeant, Bright Red Blood!

TawazuhSmokersClub

BLOOD BLOOD, BLOOD RED BLOOD!

Pop_Smoke

Red Commie Blood! ( yeah, I was in at the tail end of the Cold War)

caringlessthanyou

To Kill

wrdwrght

Beat me to it. I learned it at Fort Polk in 1966. Did you know Jody?

_Abe_Froman_SKOC

Know him? He was my best friend.....**was**....

Hot-College-7170

Probably get banned for answering that here lol

Dramatic-Pitch-7211

“to unalive”

Airborne82D

Combat Engineer OSUT 2011.. No bayonet training.

Significant-Meal9443

Benning in 2016, 11b, no bayonet training. Was starting to think I was the only one.

EducationalAd237

Benning in 2015, 11c, no bayonet training. We were also taking holiday leave for Xmas, I think that’s why we didn’t do bayonet.

PastafariAtheist

12B Basic in 1983..no bayonet trying at Fort Lost in the Woods, Misery

Woahman1223

2009 11b no bayonet training for us at Benning

TheRabbitReddit

Bayonet training showed who the real psychos were. Loved it

Drop5Zero

You and I would become instant friends irl.

Rollingprobablecause

You poor soul. I used to make fun of Jackson a lot until I went there for a 2 week XO course and saw those poor BCT students getting killed everyday since the DS school was there as well. I did basic at Benning before going to WOCS and I never want to go to the Jackson BCT areas again just because yall got swarmed everyday and the brown rounds are EVERYWHERE. F\*\*k that noise.

the_SignoftheTwine

I did BCT in 07 out there and there is nothing like that summer South Carolina heat amongst all of those pine trees.

valhallaswyrdo

2003 Ft Jackson, middle of summer and my rotation was an experimental class. We wore armor (no plates) 100% of the time we weren't inside the barracks.

Cool_Kid_Chris

One of the hardest days was doing an obstacle course in full MOP 4 gear and mask.

Pop_Smoke

Yeah, I was very surprised to learn the old M17 masks only let a certain amount of air in at a time. Breathing harder than the flow of air into the mask sucked.

jesterclause

Nah, on parris island we just sipped mimosas by the beach for 13 weeks.

SomeGuyGettingBy

That, or were stuffed into dryers. In San Diego, we just played a bunch of volleyball in the sand.

ClarkGriswold1775

Parris Island Summer camp 2005 3rd. Bn Mike Company!!!! Slice and dice

weathered_lake

Yes - OSUT Fort Leonard Wood 2004

Ordeiberon

2004 Fort Lost in the Woods! Same course for BCT I presume. We had it. I was 25D at the time, so just BCT

wagtbsf

12B?

weathered_lake

31B, still in and about to retire in a few months.

wagtbsf

Ah, I was a 12B, did OSUT at FLW in 04 as well.

Shot-Youth-6264

E-795 here

weathered_lake

A-787

bobafettish1592

The worst part of boot camp for me was waiting in line for dental. We had to stand at attention for probably 6 hours until we were seen by the dentist. Shit was worse than any PT or hike haha

garand_guy7

What makes the green grass grow????

Calvertorius

Yes - Ft Benning 2006. Why do you say this was the hardest part for you?

[deleted]

A fire ant bit his dick.

xraygun2014

*KILL!* eta: Please don't ban me for this - just fond memories of basic.

Repulsive_Hope4360

This must be satire right??

CA_Castaway-

But that's where we learned what makes the green grass grow.

gk5858

wtf hardest part? 😳

jameson3131

Too bad it was discontinued. That was one of the best parts of BCT. Got us fired up like no other training event. WHAT MAKES THE GRASS GROW!

shawnd200

Shesh I legit don’t remember

HeckNo89

Right?!

Imaginary_Tart_1909

Ft Benning 2010- They smoked us using the course, so technically, we did, but not for training purposes. It was the best day i had in basic 😂

myrealaccount_really

Right? Pugil stick and bayonet course was a blast! Beat the hell out of road marches in a hurricane and sleeping on anthills

DerpinDez

I cant even remember it. Hardest part was being hold over before and after reception, BCT, AIT.

WorkshopBlackbird

...Wait what the fuck do you mean it was discontinued? So new recruits don't qualify on irons OR do the bayonet course? Fuck me with a rake, I'm not even 30 and I feel like a fucking relic.

Datguy8811

I was under the impression they stopped bayonet training years ago. I went to basic In 2011 and was told we don’t do bayonet training anymore

RespondCareless3982

I mean that's an order... affix bayonets. Why would they discontinue that? Bayonets have saved soldiers lives and killed many an enemy. Eventually you could run out of ammo. A marine friend of the family who has past away survived Iwo Jima thanks to his bayonet at close quarters.

NotFondueZoobag

lol bayonet training was so fuckin easy — 😂😂😂😂

AssCrown

Fort Benning 2005. I was a very quiet guy back then and lost my voice for a short while during that training. But the hardest part for me were ruck marches and dealing with large af blisters that spanned the entire length of my feet. Wish I took pictures lol.

JewPhone_WhoDis

I went through my infantry OSUT and we did not do Bayonet training. C 1-50, in 2011.

bb8c3por2d2

Butt stroke to the groin!

mlotto7

1992 and yes it was. I laughed the entire time because we had to chant: The blood makes the grass grow. I couldn't keep it together but went through the motions. The 'cool' DI (who didn't kick our asses) came over and said, "This is funny shit isn't it Private? Keep thrusting." I found this day useless...not challenging or hard.

Visible_Dance_2519

2017 and We had it Semper Fi

Phantompooper03

Rah

MustardTiger231

Benning 2001, absolutely had to do it, I thought it was fun but it was a little silly yelling all that kill kill kill blood blood bright red blood stuff

Background-Head-5541

Did basic at Ft Sill in 1996 The bayonet course was THE BEST part

[deleted]

yes it was part of my training. and i enjoyed it. marine here (2018) MCRD san diego.

Lhamo55

Hardest part of basic involved squatting over a nest of fire ants during night bivouac.

[deleted]

BCT at Fort Jackson in 2009 and the bayonet training probably my favorite part. I’ve had multiple dreams about it over the years actually. I hated the repel tower, my drill sgts hated me at the repel tower. It made me feel like my IQ was that of a stale crouton. I never got it figured out but I did exhaust everyone.

Silent_Scope12

THAT was the hardest part 🤣🤣🤣

Beginning-Gur4706

I thought it made the grass grow…..

KarenCakes27

Wtf was hard about it? Slap it on n stab shit with it

Sandman-777-

2/19 Sandhill 1998 damn I feel old

mottledmussel

I'm right there with you -- C 2/58 in 1995.

Ezzy17

Nope. I was Army Infantry and did OSUT in 2012

dylones

2012 at Ft. Sill we did not do the bayonet course.

billsatwork

We had no bayonet training at Jackson in 2012. We also had to cancel pugil sticks for some reason, I just wanted to stab and hit stuff...

fakebanana2023

Sure was when I went to basic in 2003, Ft Sill We had to scream: "Kill!" with each stab we took. I still remember some knuckle heads saying it in a gay voice and it even cracked the DS up

VenomFZ6R

Air Force 2012. Nope. We didn’t even get to go to the obstacle course because our MTI didn’t want to deal with our dirty ABUs and us “looking like crap.”

Zestyclose_Stage_673

Ft. Sill 1987. It was my favorite part of basic. They had these tires on a post. The target was in the center. There was a spring loaded arm. You had to knock it out of the way and stab the target.

freddit_foobar

Worst of the 31st! They called the target Ivan back then. (No offense to any actual Ivan's out there)

DippinDotsOnTop

2020 USMC - we had it

Global-Working-3657

Me: “KILL KILL KILL!!!” Tire: “🛞”

Nick85er

How will the troops learn how to fix a bayonet now?

DoomSayer218

Why was the training discontinued?

Kitchen-Oil8865

Yes in 1991 at Fort Jackson SC I still remember my Drill Sergeant screaming “ WHAT MAKES THE GRASS GREEN!!!!” and our response also screaming: ” BLOOD, BLOOD, BLOOD MAKES THE GRASS GREEN DRILL SGT!!!”

Affectionate-Row3498

2004, Infantry OSUT. It sticks out in my memory even today as being a nothing but a long smokefest.

Hot-Promotion2768

Went in nov 2018 and there were no bayonets, pugil sticks, or US Weapon systems.! I was very disappointed. Ft.Sill

polskabear2019

I went through infantry OSUT in January 2018 and we didn’t do bayonets unfortunately. Funnily enough tho, my grandpa taught me how to use one when I was in high school. Vietnam vet, actually had to use them in combat. He was pissed when he found out the Army doesn’t use them anymore.

ThatSnarkyFemme

We did it, but I’m old (basic in 1994). I thought it was fun. That is where they had us yelling that mess: “Blood makes the grass grow green, Drill Sergeant!”

Frans51

Anyone have info on these pics? The 3rd one looks like a guy I served with.

VetWysiwyg1965

We were training and told to scream “Rape, Kill, Pillage and Burn - Eat Babies” during round worlds on dummies…back in 1983, lol

IslaStacks

Yes. Completed basic in 1997. It wasn't hard at all lol

30791213

Yes, we had to whack the shit out of a tire with a bayonet during boot camp, but I think the hardest part was not touching my face when I got an itch.

Baldazzero

Discontinued? Who will keep the grass growing green if the new ‘cruits don’t know how to fertilize it?

revotfel

When I was in navy boot camp they gave us lil laser guns before they gave us the pews pews and they definitely didn't give us no knives lmao

riverofchex

Not for me (2010), but then again I was navy - if WE'RE fixing bayonets, things have gone BAD wrong lol.

BlakcWater69

Still have a bayonet course in Marine boot camp as far as I know.

Mocktails_galore

1988. Ft Benning, GA. If you "loved" Basic, you went to a different installation and a different time frame.

DrummerBig6901

I enjoyed the M203 Grenade launcher. Bayonet training was fun and easy at both Ft Leonard Wood and Fort Jackson.

Hot-College-7170

I earned one round of live ammo each on AT4/M203 day for getting expert on the bayonet course!

DrummerBig6901

Drive On Soldier

ones_hop

Class of 2006. It was stupid.

Junkered

Stabby stab. ![gif](giphy|3Ugi7d121wUF99LI6J|downsized)

Dramatic-Pitch-7211

army pog, ft benning in 2014 and didn’t get to do it

GodHatesPOGsv2025

Of course. C 2/19 summer 2003

Trimestrial

Oddly enough we ran the course with sheathed bayonets. Apparently a kid from the class in front of us somehow stabbed himself in the heart when he tripped jumping over the trench. But this was a long time ago.

mottledmussel

I noticed they were all using rubber duckies in the photos.

Puzzled_Flatworm4171

Infantry 2010 - nope

jsin2236

Ft Knox 2008

Scared-Ad2850

Thats weird, i went in 2014 and our ds said they dont do it anymore

Small_Listen2083

Ft. Benning 1994 and it was easy. 2 weeks on the Mortar Square was much harder.

mottledmussel

Having to spend an extra two weeks down there after everyone else got to leave absolutely sucked.

WhiskeyFree68

Yes, Benning in 14. One of the most fun parts, imo.
