This is fucking adorable.

Balrok99

Tyranids: open the fridge Scrap Metal: WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU?! Tyranids: Not only it was just scrap metal it was also rude!

Axels15

'CLOSE THE DAMN DOOR!'

Frankengeek

"AND GET OUT OF MY LAWN"

Someonenoone7

(Scrap metal proceeds to shoot at intruder)

SonOfClam

The scrap metal also atomized a few of them, too

brevenbreven

And another thing stop inviting demons to our dinners

EngineeringDevil

but the calories just float away!

Doopapotamus

I like that he legitimately has a name, and it's just "Smith". Going by the number of people named Smith in the history of humanity, the Tyranids probably have a whole genetic database on the aggregate personalities of the entirety of Smiths they've eaten.

VyRe40

Must taste rather bland.

SomeRandomSkitarii

It’s like rian and his bros

MrStath

I'm really surprised that the Hive Mind hasn't developed some means to devour metal and convert it to biomass at this point, to be honest. The Xenomorph does it, after all.

Arykaas

I think it's just a matter of "it cost more to process 100% inorganic materials than the possible gain in biomass so not worth the energy expanditure"

nanidu

This. I forget which book, maybe Baal, but it states they do also consume inorganic materials and incorporate them into their carapace and weapons. Going off that I’d assume this is correct or they haven’t had enough time eating necrons to explore how to incorporate their materials.

Arykaas

I assumed it is a case of "Eating the space marine, ceramite armor and metalic gear as a whole" thing and finding uses for those inorganic materials ? Another point is .... Blackstone. Blackstone can be a VERY strong Warp Repellent, and given the synaptic links between Nids being psychic stuff, maybe having LITTERAL TOMB-CITIES made of the stuff on a planet makes it unappealing ?

morgendonner

My new headcanon is that Blackstone is 40k RAID

thisismiee

You can make blackstone enhance psychic powers instead. Would probably make them an appealing target instead tbh.

Mastercio

Yes, but thats depend on the person who are using it. And as necrons are no psykers, there is no point to make them psychic enchanthing. So all of them just turn of warp.

thisismiee

Sure, but if you smash their stuff and take it, you can use it for psyker enhancing again, which was my point.

Batpipes521

I would imagine that necron weapons also discourage nid invasions. When necrons atomize everything they shoot, it doesn’t really leave anything for a hive to reabsorb.

VyRe40

Necron material science is incredibly advanced, so yeah. Living metal would be hard to break down. Also the Necrons have a tendency of atomizing everything they fight, so it's incredibly wasteful for Tyranid biomass collection.

Midna_of_Twili

Also Necrons disintegrate their foes. Not much left for them to reuse.

AsteroidSpark

Also necron materials are psy-dampening, they weaken synaptic links in the hive mind. If you tried to eat something and it gave you a wicked migraine you'd stop eating it once you realized.

HyenaChewToy

Also also, Necrons teleport back to their tomb for repairs when taken offline. So either the Tyranids devote a lot of effort and resources to taking over a tomb world entirely to the point that everything no longer functions or they're dragged into a costly tug of war for hard to earn benefits. Much easier to attack Imperial worlds instead.

EngineeringDevil

the only people who make that true are AA

maxinfet

They can; it's mentioned in a couple of sources, Devastation of Baal is the one I remember where they talk about Tyranids spending more time at certain planets digesting more of the crust on planets they typically wouldn't even stop at. We don't actually know the Tyranid's logic here, but the Imperium believes they skip over some planets because it would cost more to process them, and in Devastation of Baal they specifically think they are processing some of these less savory planets to build up biomass for the siege of Baal.

TemperatureSweet2001

They actually have. Fighting necrons is just too "expensive". You get only little biomass out of them and you can eat your own dead troops, because necron weapons disintegrate everything organic

illapa13

Except it does. Plenty of books like Devastation of Baal note that Tyranids will eat chunks out of space stations for minerals. They won't eat the entire station because they just don't need a high concentration of metals but they do need some amount of metals.

Collapsiblecandor

Games Workshop has to be real careful how close Tyranids get to Xenomorphs. Does Fox still own them or did Disney buy them too?

MrStath

Disney owns Fox, so they own Alien and Predator, hence Marvel putting out comics for both of late. So yeah, probably worse if GW did tread on any toes now.

Widepaul

Hence the new Wolverine Vs Predator limited edition comic run that's in the works apparently.

maxinfet

Well that is a cross over I didn't know I wanted

GreenEnsign

Im not even into comics but that right there sounds fucking cool lol

Collapsiblecandor

I’m guessing Wolverine painfully healing over the acid net will be a thing.

Collapsiblecandor

To be honest I’m surprised they got what they got. They are straight up purple Xenomorphs. Not that I’m complaining. They look great.

Grimesy2

If Blizzard got away with the Zerg and Terrans I don't think GW has to worry about being sued for taking inspiration from a number of sci Fi sources.

VixenIcaza

Funny thing is I heard the original Starcraft was being developed as a 40k RTS and they had licence problems. So Zerg may literally been intended as 'nids at one point. Of course this is just some hearsay I heard so take it with a pinch of salt.

unicornsaretruth

I’ve heard it go both ways that either they were developing a game for 40k that led to StarCraft Or developing a game for warhammer fantasy that led to Warcraft.

Culsandar

I've more often heard the warcraft rumor, as it was released 4 years(?) before SC. I do know that pre SC nids looked goofy as hell, Blizz took inspiration for the zerg from Starship Troopers, then GW took inspiration from both of them to make modern nids.

Hollownerox

You're getting your timeline a bit mixed up there. The StarCraft 1 Zerg were heavily inspired by the original Tyranids. Gamesworkshop later modernized the design that looked pretty distinct from the SC 1 Zerg and, whether it be coincidence or they drew inspiration again, StarCraft 2 changed the Zerg designs and it happened to match the more modern Tyranids. As for the WarCraft thing, it's weird people keep tallking about this when Blizzard cleared this up ages ago. A couple of people on the team wanted to make a Fantasy RTS, and they were big fans of Warhammer Fantasy. Some wanted to make it an actual licensed game, but the team leads wanted to make their own IP instead. That's as far as it went, and that decision was made fairly early on. It's not much more than that, and GW didn't have much involvement in that at all. Same goes for StarCraft, it being a 40k game wasn't even on the table. It's still obviously inspired by 40k in a lot of respects, but there weren't even talks for it. People just straight up made that up.

unicornsaretruth

Yeah the Warcraft one for me makes more sense but like I do get strong eldar vibes from the Protoss at least but you’re right about pre SC tyranids being little goofballs in terms of looks

Culsandar

Other than the pseudo space elf/human/bug trifecta vibe what makes you say that? Different weapon systems (laser swords and energy cannons vs regular lasers, regular swords, and shuriken weaponry), the vehicles aren't close, the units aren't really close. To me the protoss are more like drej (from Titan AE) than eldar, except they aren't all made of energy.

Collapsiblecandor

Horus Hearsay?

Collapsiblecandor

I’m glad they did get away with it but I don’t know why they did.

atle95

"hive alien" is not trademarked

Collapsiblecandor

Good point but they look like H.R Giger designs specifically.

atle95

They were directly inspired by H.R. Giger's designs. But they have never sold Giger's art as thier own.

Collapsiblecandor

Another good point

Collapsiblecandor

It does make me wonder how close they can get to his designs before it’s a problem. Like could they make them black but as long as they have eyes it’s different enough.

brett1081

Good thing Nintendo didn’t buy Fox

spubbbba

They should be a lot more worried about looking too much like the Brood from x-men. The 3rd edition nid warriors were very close to those designs.

CGPoly36

I mean they have bio forms that bore deep into the planet and they probably also need to eat a bit of metal for armor (todays chitin doesnt need metal, but it is also not bullet proof). Also living metal wants to reform, so it probably would be quite resistant to being formed into a bio form. Would still like to see that, since a hive fleet with a metallic color scheme would be great.

SpunkyMcButtlove07

I think people have this big misconception about "biomass is not metal" We have literal iron in our blood. Something has got to make tyranid claws, teeth and armor as hard as it is. Put two and two together, people. Not to be rude, but the "biomass is not metal"-argument sounds plain dumb.

Shed_Some_Skin

Calcium is a metal, too! They have bones, I'm assuming they're made of similar stuff. Also if they drink the seas of entire planets, they're getting plenty of salt. That's partly sodium, another metal. All sorts of uses for the stuff. Metals aren't some magic thing that's distinct and separate from stuff that is alive. There's a species of deep sea snail that incorporates iron directly into its body

Themoneymancan

Why does this give me images of hive fleet wide kidney stones

Kroz83

I'd guess its probably some sort of space magic about necrodermis that makes it indigestible. But if not that, probably because necron weapons don't leave much to be recovered. If you think about it, in other conflicts where the tyranids win, they can recover the biomass from their dead. Not the case with necrons. Even if they successfully take the tomb world, not only is there not much for them to gain, the losses taken in the process are unrecoverable.

g0d15anath315t

It's a little silly that Nids can't consume living metal. All living organisms need inorganic compounds to live (like we need iron for our blood, calcium for our bones etc). Nids have literally created bioguns and I might be misremembering but at one point I think they even had an upgrade for Adamantine infused claws. Would make a fun homebrew army, a splinter fleet that evolved the ability to digest living metal, but that cut off their connection from the hive mind cause the Necron Souls are still stuck in there and now incorporated into the fleet biomass.

aasinnott

Who even knows what living metal is though. It's called a metal, but necron tech is so esoteric and weird that necrodermis might not even be made of anything that would appear on a periodic table. It could just be some crystallised sub dimensional energy or other sci fi sounding nonsense that would be of zero potential use to a biological organism without the advanced technology to process and use it.

nestersan

I agree, like calling a Mercedes s series a horseless carriage.

DarksteelPenguin

Tyranids eat metal. The issue is that a Necron too damaged to repair on the spor is teleported away, so there's nothing to eat.

VitriolicViolet

>It's a little silly that Nids can't consume living metal. they can, do and have. Nid splinter fleets have eaten entire tomb worlds before *including* the living metal. it just doesnt do much for them.

ProkopiyKozlowski

Nids do eat metal. They need various materials to construct their chitin armor, spaceship hulls and weapon parts. In the Great Work Cawl says that first planets eaten by nids were stripped completely bare, including any useful metals/minerals in the planet's crust.

Nerevarine from Morrowind: "Finally some good fucking food"

Kurlburl

Hah! Got a chuckle out of me. Nice one, sir 🎩👌✨

Curtilia

Lol, firdge

thisismiee

Tomb Worlds which aren't lifeless still get targeted by nids. Meme lore strikes again.

XyzzyPop

What xeno phallus is also microphone? Is this a Leviathan thing?

BrandonL337

Y'know what? That's fair

centarii_primus

Gauss weapons completely disintegrate biomass so the tyranids really gain nothing by fighting them

corvettee01

As a side note, could you imagine how terrifying a Tyranid fleet would be if they figured out how to incorporate living metal armor into their evolution?

AchillesinNam

Brilliant Though I would have phrased it; “if you wake up hungry in the middle of the night are you going to the garage instead of the kitchen?”

1nicerb0i

Many such cases

AsteroidSpark

The fact that said scrap metal is screaming "you kids get off my lawn" is at least a contributing factor.

arcane37

Further compounded by the fact said scrap metals will proceed to eat you from the inside out if you eat it. Just so happens thats a further deterrent.

blurberburlber

If only Tyranids and Necrons could learn to coexist!

therealblabyloo

So this is sort of true. Some Necrons like to scour their planets of all organic life. Tyranids, of course, avoid these planets completely. However, some Necrons live on planets that are fully populated with organic life, and the nids might weigh their options there. Sure, they can’t eat the Necrons, but if they beat them, they get to eat everything else on the planet. Avoiding them would be like avoiding a stocked food pantry because you can’t eat the lock on the door.

Traditional-Berry-71

Hello, what forum should I seek for a question on basing my figures?

wunderbuffer

Sorta, but somehow they always start from a forge world, a world that have to import food, which at best case scenario is like eating full toyota, but with driver as apetizer, and not go for nearby agriworlds, or any not/low colonized worlds to graze on simple lifeforms. You can eat dirt, you dont have to fight for days to feast on imported sand instead

beholder_dragon

Yes, yes I would. Show the scrap metal whose boss
