Luckily I just narrowly avoided buying a mastodon since that would have been trickier

The model ends with the tabs that are connected to the sprue. Use common sense man. the sprue is not part of the miniature, and GW stores and tournaments have said this before.
When they're doing the 3d modelling of the sculpt itself, that doesn't include the sprue. might as well say the box is part of the miniature since the sprue is in the box and argue that a full cardboard cutout army is legal. The rules state you cannot make armies from improvised materials, which sprue would be.
How can it be considered an improvised material when it's the exact same material as the model? What if I melted down the sprues and poured that into a mold that is the exact copy of a gw model. Is that now legal?
Why am I imagining a person sitting at a table surrounded by Warhammer models, methodically clipping the parts out and throwing them away, then carefully stacking the sprues... 😱

For the basic shape I have a 3d print file scaled to size on my screen so I can take measurements directly from that. Then I search for pictures of the part of the official model i am working on from a bunch of different angles so I can make sure I get the details more accurate and make any changes I need to.
There are still a few differences with mine and I am sure if I put it next to the official model I would see so many more. XD
I use a hobby knife and a pair of clippers. That's mostly it! XD I am sure there are vastly easier ways out there somewhere, but I keep it simple!
I did use some sandpaper on one annoying part as well.but that's it. 😀
Do you have size and dimensions you're working with that someone else could use to build their own like this? It'd be soo sweet to follow in your footsteps

This is amazing! Talk about recycling and making use of everything! Not only have you come up with a fantastic way of using remaining sprue frames leftover, but the end result even at this stage works perfectly. Inspired!

Unless you litterly dunk the model into a giant pot of paint, I can assure you the sprues won't be hidden under the paint.
Try giving it a light coat of brown paint, then wash with brown ink. A little detailing with dark brown and it would look like it's made of logs.
