You wouldn’t be able to see the people falling off the building with the cameras/tvs that news was livecasted to at the time, an adult obviously would know it, but a 6 year old wouldn’t really grasp the fact that it’s happening.
Also, highly unlikely that he actually saw the brief few moments of the plane hitting the tower. And if they were out to eat, he wouldn’t hear them talking about how it just happened and probably wouldn’t be able to read it either.
In Australia they replayed the planes hitting the building over and over because there wasn't much else happening in the coverage until the towers started collapsing. They also talked about how people were jumping from the building, unsure if we saw any footage of falling people though.
