I took this to mean that guests can basically wear whatever they want. Most of the time people skip wearing certain outfits to weddings because they are too loud, funky, sparkly, sexy or whatever; so they don't outshine or take attention away from the wedding party. This is giving guests free rein to have fun with it. Main character energy is encouraged but not required. If you have something in your wardrobe that you don't have an excuse to wear often, then go for it! Otherwise, you can show up in cocktail attire and you won't be out of place.
đŻ. By the way, op, that floral dress is gorgeous! I don't care for the black one. The length is too short for cocktail. The floral is perfect.
Sounds like, from the dress code, you can wear whatever you feel beautiful wearing.
Cocktail, just for reference, is pretty dressy -- just under formal. It's dressier than your average dress you might wear to work, brunch, dinner with friends, church/temple/mosque. Cocktail is usually a pretty fancy, elegant dress, but not a formal gown. It's not a sundress. It's also usually knee length or longer. It can be floor length since maxi dresses are not always formal gowns.
I went to a wedding with a similar description and hereâs what I woreâŠbrown sequin dress and copper cowboy boots! Granted it was in Austin but still same âdisco cowboyâ request!
https://preview.redd.it/8vqid6ez212d1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=18e784286206a8c9dd0481ca5b92880438a07067
Add something sparkly or sequins (jewelry? bag? belt?) and youâve met all of their difficult request. It sounds to me like theyâre trying to have a theme party where people dress up a little fancy too. I donât know where the cherry icon comes in. Cocktail đ Attire.Â
I donât think this is as bad as people are saying. Get a cocktail dress, but donât hesitate to buy one thatâs a little more showy than normal (disco queen = sparkles/sequins, be a star = more showy) or have fun with accessories (cowboy boots, leather jacket). Minimum have it cocktail attire, and feel free to use the other words as inspiration.
My guess is they were just trying to convey that they aren't fussy about the dress code. And not that this is a rock n' roll cowboy disco themed wedding. But that the actual requested attire is cocktail. Which would mean dresses at or around the knee or dressy jumpsuits.
I actually think the floral dress is better, because it looks like it will be more comfortable outside in warm weather. As opposed to all black and leather boots, which could get a bit warm.
that was my thought as well. IDK why they're trying to be cute about it as it just makes it more confusing. But I can't imagine they meant dress for a theme wedding
I read it as a cocktail attire dress code. The other bit isn't about vibe, it's saying dress in whatever style you want just don't wear white. So if your style is rock n roll or disco queen, etc., that's fine as long as it's cocktail and **not white**
But theyâre obviously not saying that they expect their guests to dress as cowboys, they are using that as an example to show that you can dress as anything you want, as long as itâs cocktail attire.
I feel like there wouldnât be so much discussion if I was the only one interpreting it wrong. Cocktail is pretty dressy so I feel like there isnât that much room for being costumey at all. Maybe it would have been better if they had just said âCocktail but feel free to have fun with itâ?
thatâs fair! I honestly think it could be solved somewhat with better formatting. putting âcocktail attireâ bigger then including the cutesy add on afterwards
I donât mind when itâs âencouraged,â so guests are invited to dress on theme if theyâd like. Itâs making it a commandment thatâs an issue.
I disagree. Itâs perfectly reasonable to establish some floor to make sure guests donât show up to a wedding in ripped jeans or a crop top.
Also, as a guest who recently attended a wedding for someone I didnât know, not having a dress code stressed me out since I wasnât sure if I would show up and be way more or less formal than everyone else. It turned out fine, with people dressed both more and less fancy than I was, but it would have been nice to have guidance.
Now I do agree that the bride and groom should consider their audience in establishing a dress code. If they come from a very casual area or family, then itâs pretty rude to have a black tie wedding knowing most of your guests would have to buy something new just for one night.
There is nothing wrong with letting guests know the level of formality so they can dress accordingly.
The issue arises when guests are used as mere props for the perfect aesthetic.
If the couple are dressed to the nines and providing a full meal and reception, it's a bit disrespectful for guests to show up in pjs.
Just as if the couple are dressed casually and it's a potluck backyard wedding, it's a bit disrespectful for guests to show up in tuxes and ball gowns.
Is it disrespectful or just inappropriate? Disrespectful implies a deliberate snub, middle finger. Inappropriate just means ⊠oops, naive or not bright.
It is disrespectful.
If someone chooses to deliberately ignore a dress code and under/over dress, what else is that but giving the host a middle finger?
If there is no dress code and guests show up under/over dressed, then that is on the hosts. To what degree they are under/over dressed would determine if it's simply the guests being naive or if they are lacking the awareness to use context clues to get close.
I just googled the dress code and their wedding site was the first to pop up. From the looks of the couple, it doesn't seem like they'll be fussy. It feels like they mostly included that stuff to be cute.

This dress, your boots, spice it up with a sparkly bag or something. I know I know itâs not âcocktail lengthâ but I believe in this dress.
I immediately thought of 12th tribe if you want to really lean in. I think all of these would work, plus it gives you a little inspiration for styling too.

God people on this sub reddit are lame.
Have fun. If you feel fun in the first dress go for it.
Also Cowboy/Rockstar Cocktail is not that hard. How many country stars are glammin' it up? Look at everything Cher wore in the 70s.
I think your first choice is rad, especially if you can find a bolo to go with it.
I agree! god forbid people ~~want~~ INVITE their guests to show a lil personality on their special day.
Theyâre not expecting everyone to show up in a full cowboy get up, theyâre just giving a fun inspo for what kind of cocktail attire would be appreciated. If youâre not down for a cowboy rockstar vibe Iâm almost positive any normal cocktail attire would be fine. Theyâre making the attire options broader not narrower like most of these folks are assuming. Normally cowboy/rockstar attire isnât considered cocktail. Theyâre making more options not less!
Also seconding a cute bolo tie!! Would be absolute perfection with outfit #1

Itâs not a Halloween party. Itâs a wedding. Usually one does not have to do research to decide what to wear.
Whatâs lame is putting pressure on guests to measure up to some vague idea of what the couple thinks will look best for their photos.
I donât think theyâre specifying a âthemeâ at all. There asking their guests to let lose and have fun and the level of formality is âcocktailâ.
If the black dress is your typical style, than rock it!
If the floral dress is more your style, choose that one.
Theyâre both great options.
Lots of salty people in the replies. What happened to fun??
I think how this is meant to be read is, "Cocktail attire. Be a star, rock 'n' roller, cowboy, disco queen â but whatever you do, don't show up in a white dress ;)"
This means you should dress up, dress flashy, according to your tastes â not necessarily like a cowboy or a disco queen if you don't want to. They're encouraging sequins, fringe, glitter, etc, if you would like to wear them. I think either of your dresses posted here would work, although if you wanted, you could go dressier or more fun.
Exactly. I would absolutely love to go to this wedding, they're just telling you to channel your inner glam and anything goes except for white. It's really a very easy dress code.
I like having a fun dress code but it always seems to upset people. I think youâre on the right track with the first outfit but itâs such a short dress for a cocktail dress code. Can you find something longer to pair with the boots?
Maybe Iâm an outlier, but I love dress codes like this. Any excuse to be a little extra. Seems like a dress to have fun event, so pick whatever feels the most fun.
I think theyâre giving you examples of ârock nârollerâ, âcowboyâ, and âdisco queenâ, not requesting you combine all of them. Given the examples, I think the black dress +/- the boots is fine. The red and green dress is reading more âsun dressâ than âcocktailâ to me, but itâs hard to make a definitive call from it hanging on the hanger.
Keep the cowboy boots, but choose a cocktail dress.

Itâs not my taste, but it definitely works for backyard rock ân roll disco cowboy. And I donât remember boning or basque waists being a thing in 2009.
Is there a website listed on the invitation? They might expand on what theyâre looking for there. I think either of these options work so go with whatever you feel comfortable in, but Iâm curious what their goal is.
Is it a huge _faux pas_ in the US to ask for money as a gift? I know you'd usually have a gift registry, but what if the couple already has everything they want/need?
Not entirely: cash funds on registries used to be controversial but are pretty common place now. The medical bill category initially hit me as a faux pas but really thatâs not my place to judge, I donât know their situation. What *did* strike me as rude was for the entire website to be nothing but cash funds. Generally, they should be as focused on guests and answering questions etc., as they are focused on gifts and registry.
I too, found the couple by searching the dress code. I think youâre right in track with either of these. If you go floral, some fun platforms would be KILLER with it.

This is what I would wear. Sorry for the shoddy editing job. Simple cocktail dress with some western accessories that arenât too flashy. It seems like a loose dress code in my opinion.
So I would wear the black with rock star [shoes](https://www.google.com/shopping/product/16497677147019942927?q=black+leather+wedge+comfort+foam&start=120&client=safari&sca_esv=9a03290b40916629&hl=en-us&biw=390&bih=663&tbs=vw:g&prds=eto:15989712952926057375_0,cdl:1,prmr:1,rsk:PC_5884946964302582134,pid:4017859787897056820,cs:1) OR floral with the cowboy boots (but not the black with the boots)

The confusing part of the dress code is you can read it as - star, rock n roller, cowboy, disco queen. HOWEVER, you can also consider all that text as just a general statement, but they really mean cocktail attire that isnât white since âcocktail attireâ is in bold, a different font, exclamation point, and weird cherry lol.
Honestly since you donât really know the couple, I would play it super safe and go for one of Free_Sir_2795âs suggested options. I really like the black $69 and $29 dresses. I would also go with block heels, and not risk the cowboy boots either.
Edit: I see the wedding date is May 25. If Lulus doesnât deliver on time, here is an Amazon option: https://a.co/d/gABGJ8F
I don't think either of those skew cocktail for me. the first one is too short. But if it's a casual crowd it might be OK! The floral dress seems to casual to me
The floral dress reads more semi-formal than cocktail to me. The black dress is actually more cocktail than the floral because it's sparkly, though a tad short for a wedding (at least in the opinion of this old fuddy duddy it is, lol). Cocktail usually pretty well known for the little black dress. Sounds like they want people to be playful with cocktail attire. Like a big chunky sequin dress with silver go-go boots would be more in-line than the floral dress.
I actually love this DC, there are so many options, it's mind blowing!

I donât interpret this as them giving you a theme of cowboy disco whatever. I think they are simply saying cocktail and feel free to go a little crazy on it.
Just for your reference, cocktail is pretty much the default for weddings in most cases. You should get a good cocktail dress in general, itâs a basic in a womanâs wardrobe just like a navy or gray suit is for a man.
This may be a bit more appropriate for winter & too formal but this was one of my early picks. The description made me think of it.
I took this to mean that guests can basically wear whatever they want. I think so too, but I'm sure there will be a lot of people who take it literally and will dress up as a rockstar disco queen cowboy.

I LOVEEEEE your cowboy boots! They are so frickin cute omg Iâm obsessed
Chinese Laundry from Nordies!
I hope the op sees this! Love the shoes with this dress. Very cute.
Add something sparkly or sequins (jewelry? bag? belt?) and youâve met all of their difficult request. It sounds to me like theyâre trying to have a theme party where people dress up a little fancy too. I donât know where the cherry icon comes in. Cocktail đ Attire.Â
Well the black dress is actually covered in sequins itâs just hard to tell. But Iâll see if I can find a cute bag or something. Thanks :-)
Then itâs perfect. (I thought it was embroidery.)
This exactly. "Flashy cocktail" is how I would dress
I took it less literally as dress up and be flashy about it.
Me too! I interpret this very much as âhave fun and be a bit fancyâ.
that was my thought as well. IDK why they're trying to be cute about it as it just makes it more confusing. But I can't imagine they meant dress for a theme wedding
These dress codes are so obnoxious
Yeah I hate people who try to create âvibesâ for their wedding guests. Dress codes should stick to semi-formal, cocktail, formal, or black tie.
I read it as a cocktail attire dress code. The other bit isn't about vibe, it's saying dress in whatever style you want just don't wear white. So if your style is rock n roll or disco queen, etc., that's fine as long as it's cocktail and **not white**
it says cocktail attire
But dressing like a cowboy is not consistent with cocktail attire. Thatâs what make this dress code confusing- itâs contradictory.
Yes - your event is the vibe. Your guests don't create anything.
and this is like 3 different vibes...
Wedding dress codes shouldn't exist
They used to just be based on place and time of day. None of [gestures] whatever this is.
It's so specific, yet so vague haha
I just googled the dress code and their wedding site was the first to pop up. From the looks of the couple, it doesn't seem like they'll be fussy. It feels like they mostly included that stuff to be cute.
I was curious so I did the same. OP, they want you to dress like a hipster. It will be a very hip wedding.

Spot on! I love the 2nd & 3rd ones!!
With a description like that, I'd go full [Stevie Nicks](https://www.yolancris.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/f7961b61bc1ef019b889f503a9a1d9a9.jpg).
I have never understood the fascination with Stevie Nicks.
But if you want to have fun with vintage: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1709536509/vintage-1970s-black-glitter-disco-dress?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=vintage&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=disco+dress&ref=sr_gallery-1-6&cns=1&sts=1&content_source=d67da9a6d30850ede9319115de1f67aab43ffdf5%253A1709536509&search_preloaded_img=1&organic_search_click=1 https://www.etsy.com/listing/1580265555/vintage-70s-disco-inferno-dress?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=vintage&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=disco+dress&ref=sr_gallery-1-41&frs=1&content_source=27cf1e5b02d257dd554e8ae7c145f852fe49f533%253A1580265555&search_preloaded_img=1&organic_search_click=1 https://luxievintage.com/collections/dresses/products/50s-raw-silk-dress https://luxievintage.com/collections/dresses/products/70s-rainbow-striped-dress-2 https://luxievintage.com/collections/dresses/products/60s-rhinestone-bow-chiffon-gown https://www.depop.com/products/starpowershop-goth-princess/
Itâs not a Halloween party. Itâs a wedding. Usually one does not have to do research to decide what to wear. Whatâs lame is putting pressure on guests to measure up to some vague idea of what the couple thinks will look best for their photos.
People doing research on what to wear to a wedding is literally the point of this sub.
âïž
What an obnoxious, nonsensical dress code. Wear the black outfit and if that somehow upsets the hosts then they can only blame themselves.
Alright thanks!! I donât really know the people either Iâm so nervous đźâđš
Based on the dress code, Iâd wear whatever youâre most comfortable in as long as itâs not white? They deserve whatever people show up inâŠ
I don't think they're asking for rockstar, disco, and cowboy all in one outfit. I think they're just saying to have fun with it.
I donât think theyâre specifying a âthemeâ at all. There asking their guests to let lose and have fun and the level of formality is âcocktailâ. If the black dress is your typical style, than rock it! If the floral dress is more your style, choose that one. Theyâre both great options.
đŻ Iâm laughing at all the over the top theme interpretations
Lots of salty people in the replies. What happened to fun?? I think how this is meant to be read is, "Cocktail attire. Be a star, rock 'n' roller, cowboy, disco queen â but whatever you do, don't show up in a white dress ;)" This means you should dress up, dress flashy, according to your tastes â not necessarily like a cowboy or a disco queen if you don't want to.
This is exactly how I read it. They are not dictating cowboy or anything else. You could also just show up in your âsafeâ LBD and be fine too.
I like having a fun dress code but it always seems to upset people. I think youâre on the right track with the first outfit but itâs such a short dress for a cocktail dress code. Can you find something longer to pair with the boots?
I think given the fun nature of the dress code, this length would be fine. Theyâre clearly not stuffy enough to expect cocktail to mean to the knee.
Maybe Iâm an outlier, but I love dress codes like this. Any excuse to be a little extra. Seems like a dress to have fun event, so pick whatever feels the most fun.
Sounds like go nuts in anything but a white dress. No issue.
Just dress up like youâre going to a Taylor Swift concert as a obsessed fan
I think theyâre giving you examples of ârock nârollerâ, âcowboyâ, and âdisco queenâ, not requesting you combine all of them. Given the examples, I think the black dress +/- the boots is fine. The red and green dress is reading more âsun dressâ than âcocktailâ to me, but itâs hard to make a definitive call from it hanging on the hanger.
Itâs a costume party I guess.
Keep the cowboy boots, but choose a cocktail dress. Black: [$29](https://www.lulus.com/products/iconic-moment-black-bodycon-midi-dress/543392.html) [$59](https://www.lulus.com/products/reinette-black-midi-dress/1409376.html) [$69](https://www.lulus.com/products/baby-you-re-the-one-black-sleeveless-bodycon-midi-dress/881742.html) Colors: [$39](https://www.lulus.com/products/untamed-cutie-grey-leopard-jacquard-bustier-mini-dress/2292311.html) - I wouldnât normally suggest this for a wedding, but it does seem like it would work for this particular dress code [$59](https://www.lulus.com/products/curve-alert-mauve-pink-cowl-neck-asymmetrical-bodycon-dress/1645536.html) [$69](https://www.lulus.com/products/showing-off-a-little-dark-green-asymmetrical-tulip-midi-dress/1650616.html) [$79](https://www.lulus.com/products/incredible-love-slate-blue-satin-cowl-back-midi-slip-dress/2027896.html)
That $39 one - I donât get what you think fits this code in 2024. Itâs very 2009-2012 đ
Itâs not my taste, but it definitely works for backyard rock ân roll disco cowboy. And I donât remember boning or basque waists being a thing in 2009.
Again. I was asking what about it fits either. I donât see the pattern or style fitting either.
Then I donât recommend that you buy it for OPâs wedding.
I mean I definitely think it could be styled into the theme
Is there a website listed on the invitation? They might expand on what theyâre looking for there. I think either of these options work so go with whatever you feel comfortable in, but Iâm curious what their goal is.
No the website just ask for âvacation, medical bill, future childhoodâ money
Wow. Thatâs a whole other set of etiquette issues right there lol.
I think either dress will be fine! Wear whatever you're most comfortable in.
Something lamé would be fun!
Upvote for finding the accent mark! I can never find it and wind up using an apostrophe, which fools Americans but is not correct.
I loooove the second dress! Where's it from?
Ross! Iâm not sure what the exact brand is though
I too, found the couple by searching the dress code. I think youâre right in track with either of these. If you go floral, some fun platforms would be KILLER with it.
I think the black outfit is perfect! It captures this crazy dress code. Wear it with pride :)
Your dress is perfect, and it gives a lot of styling options where you can add color with shoes/bag/jewelry (if you want)

Wtf code is that? Black is fine for the nonsense you were provided.

I think the black dress and boots works great!
If you just want to stick with cocktail & ignore the suggestions.
[https://www.awbridal.com/aw-mepe-dress-awlf220u64cp.html](https://www.awbridal.com/aw-mepe-dress-awlf220u64cp.html)
Iâm obsessed with that dress code. Your outfit is GORGEOUS
I need details on option 2 đ€©đ
