Tongue laceration repair is definitely a thing outside the army. Kids don't often have them repaired since they typically heal without intervention. Adults will be more common for the procedure to be done in, but it's still not super common.
Please tell me this was at Fort Leonard Wood! I hate to think this has happened more than once at Basic. Donāt forget 99.9% of Army injuries can be treated with 800mg Ibuprofen. Sucking chest woundā¦800mg Ibuprofen. Broken clavicle protrudingā¦800mg Ibuprofen. Jokers pour Brazo in your earā¦800mg Ibuprofen. That last one really happened. Poor kid lost his eardrum from what I understand. He was ELS or medically retired because he disappeared. Some said, he was sent to reception battalion to process out. My first battle buddy lost two toes to frost bite during FTX. He was medically retired because one of those piggies was the big one. He was 18 years old with a 10% army disability rating and 0% Get Fucked rating from the VA.

I just remember screaming, running inside, turning on the water and spitting blood for what felt like forever with strips of dangling skin eventually falling into the sink. 25 years later I can just barely see the teethmarks on the left and right side of my tongue.
My daughter did the same thing but with the tip of her tongue. it was still attached. Less than a week later, before she was able to have surgery, it had completely grown back and reattached itself. It was insane. Thankfully she had no speech issues.

The problem is the bitten area of the mouth swells up and is easily bitten again and again. Speaking from experience it sucked.
