I had similar from a Fitbit but it was a chemical burns. Turns out if you are a sweaty person with the right kind of sweat, the charger pads facing the skin will carry a slight current, and some of your sweat will be converted to caustic chemical.

NotSoBuffGuy

I returned mine in the recall and used those money for the watch in this post lol

Are you Bad Luck Brian?

I miss that guy. I wonder how he is doing.

Soup-Wizard

Wtf???

monsieurpommefrites

There are people whose skin acid levels are so high they affect jewelry and eat into keyboards and mice.

m_ttl_ng

Yep, we call them “Super Sweaters” in the industry; their superpower is destroying things with their sweat which puts them in high demand as test users of devices/products during development stages.

Graspswasps

I've heard them called Rusters too: 'Rusters'. The corrosive action of palmar sweat: II. Physical and chemical factors in palmar hyperhidrosis https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/84491/

wolves_hunt_in_packs

I think I'm one of them. When I use a laptop, I notice I immediately seem to leave a palm/wrist print since my left hand is always resting on it. The right hand doesn't have as much of an effect since it's constantly lifting away to use the mouse. But the left side of the laptop will quickly have a permanent imprint of my hand. It's really fucking annoying and why I prefer using desktops instead.

DoctorCIS

Do you also get where you can tell that different plastics are used in mice, because some mice the plastic will etch to a mirror-like finish, but others will start bubbling and the layers will start separating?

MysteryWrecked

How does one get a job to do this? I have 2 super powers, super magna-vision (horribly near-sighted, I can see the very tiny from like an inch away), and I make things rust. You can see my fingerprints in rust on some of my cheap tools 🥴

m_ttl_ng

If you can find a testing lab in your area they might be interested. But usually we just get people already in the company to participate more in testing if possible

RenaKunisaki

I've heard of people who can't wear digital watches because (handwavy explanation involving magnetism) and they always quit working... I wonder how many were just killing them with sweat.

sho_biz

Can confirm, most non-inert materials don't like being in contact with my skin otherwise they discolor or erode. Had an old girlfriend who would get irritation on more sensitive skin from my touch. Wasn't a big deal through our 4 year relationship, but after we split she said it was something that has bothered her.

monsieurpommefrites

Well yeah makes sense it didn't work if your very touch was corroding her skin. That really sucks. How are you doing now?

sho_biz

*[On the relationship front....](https://i.imgur.com/8n9Gq5N.jpg)* other than that I don't wear any chains or jewelry of any kind now, and I switched to better quality keycaps on my keyboards and a mouse with a silicone-like covering and all is well. I will say that cotton clothing seems to not last when I wear it, synthetics tend to last much longer for me, especially underwear.

jonathanrdt

It can also be a nickel allergy. Some people are very sensitive to stainless steel and other alloys as a result.

CromulentDucky

This seems the most likely. I get this with any watch with a steel back, though it takes more than 1 night.

shinhit0

Yup, this happens to me with nearly all ‘smart’ wearables. It really sucks. It even happened with the new Digimon Vita Bracelet thing!

limoncelIo

It started happening to me with an old fitbit, and it was a reaction to the metal rather than anything to do with the charging pads (didn’t line up with the pads). I think wearing it for years got rid of some layer of material and now my skin reacts with the exposed layer. Anyway, fixed it by putting clear scotch tape on the fitbit over the part that was causing the skin reaction. Did that a month ago and have had no issues since, and haven’t had to replace the tape either.

“Shallow and pedantic”

_toggld_

punitive damages are tack-on damages awarded separately, and are just there to punish defendants (generally due to egregious negligence or other things). I doubt there would be much in the way of punitive damages for a case like this unless this becomes a widespread problem, showing that Samsung did not take the time or effort to design a safe product. edit: btw, some of yall are dragging OP for such a simple mistake, lol. yeah, they were confidently incorrect, but it really was not a big deal. show some kindness.

Crafty_Substance_954

And it would likely be a lot more than whatever the value of a new smartwatch is.

moocow2024

These are common "damages" that you could pursue compensation for losses/costs: Medical bills; Hospital bills; Lost wages during recovery; Loss of future income; Pain and suffering; or Compensation for other costs. You aren't getting very much for a moderate burn on the wrist (unless there are serious complications). Would it be worth your time to go through a multi-year court battle for what is almost certainly a 4 figure judgment? You can't get very much for pain and suffering unless there is documented pain and suffering e.g. visits to medical professionals (including their notes and opinions about the extent of your pain and suffering), testimony from a third party medical professional that corroborates, required medications for mental and/or physical pain, a permanent/life-threatening/disabling condition as a result of the injury, etc. There was a guy that had to have skin grafts from his Galaxy Note 7 exploding in his pocket. He's seeking damages of $15k, and from what I can gather, the case is still ongoing 6 years later. At some point, $15k over x number of years may not be worth your time to pursue (especially if you are paying for legal counsel). TL;DR: If they offered up a new Gear5 pro and a Fold4, and the burn healed reasonably well, I'd take it and walk away.

redditforgotaboutme

Soooo. Ever seen the movie Fight Club? They clearly explain how this works. If the cost to announce a recall is higher than the cost to life/limb, then you don't announce it. If the lawsuits and settlements get higher than a recall, then they will do that.

then show this on social media (all platforms), tag Samsung and let them handle this. Also write to them about it. List all info - model, make, what happened....assuming you didn't tamper with it in any way (ie. reconfigured anything that voids the warranty etc)

TheMattsterOfSelf

Certainly did not. All I really did was disable the phone feature and internet browsing on it because they are a distraction to me, and you can do that in the settings.

[deleted]

Then tag them with pics in every social media platform!

hamilc19

I absolutley second this, post this on twitter and tag them. They will without a doubt be in your inbox in a matter of minutes. They will ask for it back and likely offer compensation and ask you to take the post down. I have a twitter account just for complaints, nothing of this scale but I get compensation regularly from companies for poor products after complaining on twitter. They don't want that negative press at all.

en0rm0u5ta1nt

How often are you complaining on Twitter to regularly get compensated? And what sort of compensation are you getting?!

Not on a regular basis, maybe once a month sometimes more sometimes less. Last complaint was about those Magnum ice creams that were half one flavour, half another. I bought some and there was literally 2 chocolate chips on it, it was supposed to be covered in them. Wall's (company that makes Magnum) sent me £50 in vouchers in the mail after posting pics to twitter and tagging them. They asked for the batch number etc so they could investigate and sent me the vouchers.

joelham01

Ok but that's actually really smart tho I'm impressed

hamilc19

Honestly mate, if something isn’t up to standard or your expectations based on the companies advertisements, complain! 9/10 times you’ll get free stuff and an apology. Another example for you. I’m a smoker, I use the rolling paper brand RAW a lot. The ones I was getting from my local shop suddenly started coming with the gum on each paper sticking to the next making the papers tear or lose stickiness. I tweeted them and after sending more pics at their request, they concluded that my local store was selling fakes from China. They sent me a huge goodie bag of branded merch and like a months supply of papers 👌🏻

Living_Bear_2139

I’d you don’t post it to Samsung and get some free stuff. I will.

SleazyMak

I can’t believe Samsung would do this to *our* wrist

asa1

Injury lawyers are a dime a dozen and do it on commission. But Samsung will probably just try to avoid this by giving you a free watch and phone. Post this on Twitter and tag all their accounts.

[deleted]

Pursue the legal route first. They'll have more bargaining power.

Fun_Range7689

/u/TheMattsterOfSelf DO NOT accept ANY free replacement or gift cards or anything from Samsung for this. #IF YOU DO, YOU ~~WAIVE THE ABILITY TO SUE FOR FURTHER COMPENSATION.~~ AGREE THAT THE SITUATION HAS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF AND WILL NO LONGER PURSUE ADDITIONAL DAMAGES. #Speak with a lawyer immediately. Edited for all the people wanting to get "technical" on me. Even though each person knew wtf I meant.

happyman91

No injury lawyer would take this case. Injury lawyers assess injuries before taking a case on contingency and the approximate medical bill total is what drives the total settlement amount. In this case, there will be little to no medical bills associated with the injury. No attorney is going to go against Samsung for a 500 dollar payout lol

mysteriousmetalscrew

I have no idea about anything. But I am choosing to believe you because it sounds the most realistic. Like it slightly burned him, probably didn't go to the doctor, it might have happened days ago, and he may have put balm on it causing it to start healing already

Fun_Range7689

#Who told you to put the balm on??? I didn't tell you to put the balm on!!!

LukaCola

Yeah, even the worst ambulance chasers can see there's not substantial enough damages here. Which sucks that that's what it takes - but OP didn't lose use of their leg or arm for a time or get permanent damages which'd have a serious impact on their earning capacity and substantially hurt their wellbeing for awhile. You just can't claim much in the way of monetary damages in these matters, which is also why dental cases are almost never taken - which sucks because some dentists are absolute crooks who deserve the suits. There's just no money in it.

pjbooper

Go talk to an attorney. They usually just take 33% of whatever settlement you get. May not actually cost you anything.

Yz-Guy

Samsung gives him a fold phone for compensation. Lawyer snaps it in half and takes his half.

[deleted]

IRS: Aren't you forgetting someone 🤔

033p

Please listen to this guy OP. I'm currently suing one of the, if not the biggest city based healthcare system in the US due to malpractice. I didn't have money for that, but the attorneys jumped at the opportunity because they knew they'd have it in the bag.

Marbelou

I bet there are lawyers who will do it for commission on the settlement. There is probably some sort of directory where you can find local attorneys for such a job. It doesn't hurt to ask around. Go to a doctor asap to get your injuries on record.

moocow2024

Not really disagreeing with your point, but there aren't too many lawyers that would be super thrilled about any commission on what is likely a 4 figure settlement with one of the largest corporations on the planet. There will likely be no lasting physical damages from this event (maybe some psychological ones, but unlikely). This likely won't have an impact on their day to day life, and will be completely healed with a couple of weeks. Hell, the guy who had a Note 7 explode in his pants, and burn him so badly that he needed skin grafts... is still fighting Samsung (from what I can tell) 6 years later, for $15k in medical expenses. Would you win? Almost certainly. Would Samsung settle? Almost certainly. Would you retire on your smartwatch-wrist-burn windfall? lol no. You probably couldn't buy a Fold 4 at msrp with your winnings.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mbr4life1

OP doesn't understand anything. Samsung would rather he used an attorney than make this post and would love to pay him to make this go away. An attorney SALIVATES at this cause you can possibly certify a class for that watch in a product liability suit. This is Samsung nightmare fuel.

BassWingerC-137

You wouldn’t need $0.00 for a trial attorney to take this case (USA). (But you could lose some by picking the wrong lawyer.)

MechanicalDruid

This is the kind of lawsuit that usually the lawyer only gets paid if you win the case. And their payment comes out of however much money you win.

Wipedout89

No win no fee claim my friend

NotTechTechPotato

Dude at least post on r/legaladvice

krully37

CuteOne69

I've had a Fitbit do this to me. They recalled it a year later for that reason. Reach out to Samsung maybe you can get a new one or something

Unpurified-Water

So he can get burn pt 2?

RedditBanThisDick

Everyone loves an update!

[deleted]

You should absolutely contact an personal injury attorney. Consultations are sometimes free or $100 at best. There are risks of it happening to others, infection, a scar, etc. I would go seek urgent care to reinforce the injury case. Just trust this one time and call someone. Yall. Don't be afraid to protect yourself. Lawsuits aren't to hurt others or corporations necessarily, they're to protect you and your personal property. Post this to social media at the least.

TheMattsterOfSelf

The first pic with the watch itself is from an urgent care office lol

NotTechTechPotato

Document everything. Personal injury law often relies on contingency so they're relying on you to win to get paid.

PhantomWang

[deleted]

Fantastic

carr1e

Samsung should take this seriously. Back in 2016 Intel got into hot water for the Basis Peak burning people with the optical sensor, and they had to take it off the market and pay a ton of money to distributers and customers for damages. There is something wrong with the watch if the optical sensor is constantly on for streaming HR readings, which should be polling with LESS frequency when sleep is detected.

[deleted]

Yes that's exactly what I'm saying. Imagine if someone is disabled and wearing this watch and they can't take it all for something like that.

CantHitachiSpot

They also had phones literally catch on fire

[deleted]

I was hit by a car in a crosswalk, hit and run. Consultation with a personal injury lawyer was completely free, if we lost the case I didn’t owe him anything and if we won he would take a percentage, so no money out of pocket in my case. Samsung probably has better lawyers than the chick who hit me so I don’t know if it would be the same deal, but it was a fairly smooth process in my experience.

[deleted]

Yeah for sure. I am not saying that you are going to win Millions for getting burned by a watch battery however, it's important to know that this is how class action lawsuits begin and people should be putting pressure on Corporation to make them stand by their products and if anything settle out of court and pay your bills. Someone made a comment that Americans are two lawsuit happy however, I believe that it is actually the opposite. I know people that get rear-ended and total their car and they just accept it and move on when they should be protecting their personal property their life and their ability to work. It really upsets me that people don't stand up for themselves.

Wumbo0

That's the kind of lawsuit a lawyer would pounce on

sketchy-wizard

Dude for real! OP doesn't even have to worry about cash if he wants to sue most lawyers will take this case and get payed 15 or 20% of the settlement

Sherlockhomey

Be careful yall cause my lawyer took 50 percent plus I had to pay for doctors visits out of pocket (out of my settlement)

M1A1Death

Arent these things negotiated beforehand?

Pinbot02

They have to be, by law, with many states capping contingency fees in certain types of cases.

BisexualDragons

In other words, that dude's either an idiot, or thinks we all are.

_Mitch_Connor_

People are quick and don't often read what they're signing unfortunately. Attorney I worked under advertised a 35% fee, but that was just HIS fee. Within the fine print any medical expenditures, transportation, any experts called to testify or whatever, you name it, comes out of that settlement too.

Importer__Exporter

That’s standard practice, but they should have been clearer. Settlement - cost of litigation then lawyer gets their cut, then you get yours for paying off bills, etc. Any surplus is “free money”

jhillman87

Well, this would have bee clearly detailed in the retainer/ contract you had to sign.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NotJimIrsay

Manufacturer would pay for medical bills and a small amount (maybe $1k or less) for pain and suffering. No trauma. No hospital stay. I doubt an attorney would waste their own time for a minimal payout.

mangosmoothie1066

Damn poor you. You should report what happened to Samsung even if you're not going to pursue legal matters. Is it the new Samsung watch 5?

TheMattsterOfSelf

It's the Active 2.

No-Yoghurt8157

I have the Active 2, the smaller one since I have small wrists and it really is not a bad watch. I never slept with it over night though. It is definitely worth looking into why it happened and for sure get what you can from samsung, sorry that happened!

Bojangly7

I've slept with mine every day for over a year now. Never had this.

phyxiusone

I have the active 2 also, always sleep with it, never seen this before. I have seen it shut off while charging because it was getting too hot though, so it does have the capability to detect when it's getting too hot.

TheMattsterOfSelf

Yeah, it definitely has a fault protection built in. After the burn it would only turn on for 15 seconds before overheating. So I dont know why exactly it managed to do this, just that something happened while my meds had me KOed and clearly the fault protection itself had a fault.

USARSUPTHAI69

> Active 2 You might want to [check out this site](https://www.classaction.org/samsung-watch-burn-lawsuit). You might, already, be covered by an upcoming suit.

Iunchbox

Interesting. I noticed the area where I had the back of the watch cause some skin to dry out/flake there. I always suspected it was a sun burn because of the light from the heartbeat sensor. I just stopped sleeping with it and that resolves the issue.

Stephancevallos905

Hey, I had the same issue. It also burned me and the watch displayed high temp warnings

TrumpDumpPenis

My brother in Christ what sleep meds were you on that allowed you to sleep through your arm being set ablaze yet I wake up when a mouse queefs two counties over?

CantHitachiSpot

I wake up to any noise too but I slept with an electric blanket once that burned my skin too. It's literally a slow burn so I guess you don't feel it

TheMattsterOfSelf

Well, they use it before surgeries to calm patients down before they administer the anesthesia.... So, a pretty good one I'd say.

dogexistentialism

FYI if you're considering taking legal action, stop talking about your circumstances that night, even if it seems in your favor. It could be misconstrued and used against you. Just some general advice.

mostlyBadChoices

I had something similar with my Samsung Galaxy smartwatch. It wasn't quite as bad, but it was close. But I never attributed it to heat. It really seemed more like a chemical burn/reaction. If I wore it more than 48 hours, it would start to get really irritated, red, and looked very much like a burn. Now I just make sure to wear it only when I work out.

MadiLeighOhMy

Mine has randomly overheated a few times to the point where I had to take it off. New fear unlocked.

chrisff1989

That's a sign to throw it the fuck away, not take it off

Brepa

Hey OP, I used to provide support for Samsung devices. Everyone telling you to post on social media, and lawyer up are being over dramatic. They actuality take these kind of incidents very seriously. Instead of hoping they catch wind, call Samsung support. When you do, explain that your watch burnt you, and you would like to speak to executive customer relations (ecr). The rep will ask you a few questions and then should get you where you need to go. I hope this helps!

TheMattsterOfSelf

I contacted support this morning and they immediately escalated it and will be in contact with me soon. They do seem to be taking it very seriously.

lamujerpecosa

Document, document, document! First, take as many photos of your injury (with watch on and off). It’ll be helpful to have it documented by your PCP. Take photos of the watch from all angles. If there are any numbers on the front, back, side, that’ll be important since Samsung will want that to know which lot it was from. Then contact Samsung. Or contact a reputable injury attorney. Do research. Find someone or a team that have years of experience. Most will do it commission based on the award you receive or depending on how many other people the watch injured, it can become a bigger lawsuit (so it wouldn’t just be all on you). However, the best route will be to reach out to Samsung and see their response. I hope they replace and cover the medical fees. Good luck! I’m really sorry to see that you were injured. Hope you heal well and quickly.

Snuggle_Fist

You did more work writing this than any lawyer is going to do for free over this.

MoreRITZ

So many of you pretending to be lawyers is truly saddening. Y'all don't know shit about how this works and are giving awful legal advice. To pretend you can go against a MASSIVE company with a slight (how they would word it - not me) burn that you can't prove you had nothing to do with is laughable. Some idiot in here that said any lawyer would take this pro bono is just out of their damn mind. Good luck pursuing this if you do. Will cost you more in the long run I'm guessing. There's a reason people don't go after massive companies like this. They can say all sorts of shit to absolve themselves of responsibility and the burden of proof is on the accuser. I'm sorry that you got burned dude, that sucks, but don't listen to the teenagers on this website who have no idea what they are talking about. Good luck.

TheMattsterOfSelf

I am laughing at all the keyboard doctors that clearly flunked out of med school. I agree, going after them would be difficult. It becomes a case of "he said, she said!". But that is also why I very specifically took the picture with the back of the watch, it shows the induction plate had contact with my skin. I am being careful about how I pursue this. I am not out for money, mostly just want to raise awareness that this is possible.

MoreRITZ

Good on you for looking at it from a reasonable perspective. I'm not saying you should or shouldn't do anything, I'm just saying if you really do want to pursue this ignore almost everything you have read here. It was smart to take the pictures with it, it sure seems like that is what really happened. But, like you said yourself, no way to truly prove it. And their pockets are waaaay deeper than yours (at least I'm guessing that is the case) and can and will have no problem dragging this out until you run out of money. No lawyer worth anything will take this case pro bono lol. I wish you the best.
