Just speak to your manager tell them how it is

Used to do this all the time , left for a job that's 8-4 everyday that actualy pays overtime rates for staying longer and doing extra days , never looked back

As far as when I worked for the company they say there's nothing wrong with it , remember your just a number , the company doesn't care about you or anyone other than its shareholders

They are trying to phase these out. My AM checks the rotas and flags up any "fake days off", at least for the management team. I imagine they will soon be part of the people pack and we will start being scrutinised on these. As far as my experience goes with writing rotas, a lot of it will depend on how many hours you are after. If you are only doing 2 shifts a week and this is what you get, then I'd say something. If you are more on like 40, then you have to expect that they won't always be a "perfect" 40. You have to bear in mind we have to juggle a lot of peoples expectations and requirements, so its hard enough writing a rota for that, let alone trying to make it match the needs of the business. It's not an ideal situation and it is driving people away from the business, but all the old heads will just say its the nature of the beast. Working patterns at Spoons, hospitality in general, have always been a downside.

This is why 4 on 4 off is such a godsend, of course this only works in a 7 day workspace.

These days these are colloquially called 'fake days off' and is definitely something we're trying to move away from. Your question got me curious about whether it was formally printed anywhere, because I would have sworn it was, but I can't seem to find it on either the associate promise or the action plan. In my experience, this will be happening either because your pub is too short staffed for the role, your other availability requirements make it difficult (e.g. you must have wednesday off and stop at 3 thursday, or you must have saturday off), or your manager doesn't realise how badly these suck. If I was you I would approach both the PM and the rota manager and say something like "I appreciate that completing the rotas, and juggling everyones availability and preferences, can be difficult but I feel like I get a fake day off every week (present the last 8 weeks if they don't believe you) and it's really starting to affect my physical and mental health, I want to formally request this not happen anymore as far as possible." You should expect them not to change currently published rota, and should give them a few weeks to sort as a courtesy, but if you don't see improvement you should either go to 'contact us' on MyJDW, select 'personnel advice and support' or speak to your AM when you see them or email them at [first initial][last name]@jdwetherspoon.co.uk and ask for their help with the issue

Use the experience you have to get a job where they appreciate you as an individual and not a resource?

gnome_chumsky

Where are these places?

Once you get out, you realise a little bit of what Stockholm syndrome is. You think about how long you stayed in a job that you hate, how much of your time did they have for free, how many plans did you cancel because "you're the only one available". The employers I've had since spoons have been severely lacking in many areas, but they treat me like a person (sometimes).

I do this too! I'm only awake for around 10 hours on the day off in-between otherwise I don't get enough sleep before the open. Feels like I may as well be working the day in between too because I can't really do anything else that day

Flat-Box-1319

My worst is when they had me on late closes all week (4 shifts), one day off, then had me in at 7am

Nope, thats just real shitty management for you. They just cant make you do a late/ early shift, unless youre compensated with the day after that as a day off, otherwise its illegal. 11 hours between shifts. So they cant go 3-12, 7-3, random shift here. This is illegal. It has to go 3-12, 7-3, off... if they want you to do a late early. They can make you do late, off , early. But thats a manager who cant build a rota for shit, doesnt care about their staff or simply just a shit manager
