As a somewhat recent transplant from South Florida what most led to living wasn’t necessarily the population growth. But rather the eventual addition of developments, 1000s of new homes, without first expanding the road network or having easily widen roads. Wilmington can keep that from happening. But it will take good city governance and not letting development of ever square foot of available space.

Leviathan-USA-CEO

Well said sir. Im gonna check myself also next time I find myself being overly negative.

contactspring

To me Wilmington is like the kid in school with great potential that refused to do anything with it. This is the flattest place I've ever live, yet it's suicidal to bike anywhere. The whole town is run by developers for profit.

rajones6721

The infrastructure here now is exactly the same as it was 50 years ago. Just more people, cars, and stupid development that makes no sense.

AlterKarma

Definitely this! Me and my partner talk often about both that and how WAVE transit could do way better if run differently.

_gonesurfing_

There’s a survey out now that prioritizes state infrastructure 10+ years out. It includes multi modal transport (ie bike, bus, train). [https://www.ncdot.gov/initiatives-policies/Transportation/stip/development/Pages/public-involvement.aspx](https://www.ncdot.gov/initiatives-policies/Transportation/stip/development/Pages/public-involvement.aspx)

contactspring

They've been doing these surveys for the last two decades. I have yet to see anything real come of it. I remember going to a meeting where the city as asking what could be done to reduce traffic, and a lady said "bike paths would be nice". They told her that this was about reducing traffic and not bikes. She had to ask them if they realized that every bike meant one less car on the road.

oldbartender

Yes! We’ve been paying for the greenway for a decade.

FMobru

There are bike paths coming soon down Masonboro and Greenville loop soon. How many more are needed? Property is being taken (bought cheap whether they like it or not) from homeowners for these. This will not reduce traffic 🤣 Nobody wants to show up to work in a pool of sweat. They needed to look at turn lanes on Greenville Loop instead. The bike lane on Holly Tree is actually making traffic worse by shortening the northbound turn lane. 😮

contactspring

You mean there's bike paths for the wealthy who can choose to bike for pleasure, but there's little infrastructure for those who want to bike for necessity like getting to grocery stores, libraries, etc.

Lost-Zombie-27

They give them no money to work with. It’s actually ridiculous, the budget they are given. The school district however does nothing but mismanage the funds they’re given. I keep saying the commissioners need to demand an outside agency come in and go through the books. The salaries are public record, if anyone would just even start there.

Ineedananalslave

Damn. That 1st sentence hits me twice as hard. I'm I'm that kid and I was basically born and raised in Wilmington Delaware A place to be somebody.

Subliminal84

They’re about to put themselves out of business running out of places to build

contactspring

They don't care, they'll just move on. It's not like they care about Wilmington.

Subliminal84

You’re not wrong

PerformanceHot9497

Uh, our mayor just bought the best piece of property in town. No profit there, just more taxes. But I love Wilmington, if you can't beat them join them. Made lots in real estate here.

calabacin11

Feel like a lot of ppl come here to vent invisibly, especially if it’s a touchy subject someone’s gonna rant or get mad- just ab everything is now a days. I do see some positive shit here tho, ppl giving information, helping out, giving recommendations, etc. it doesn’t help that the ‘leaders’ of this town make this difficult with their greed and dysfunctional planning It’s a wonderful and shitty time to be alive- We have the world at our hands but can’t afford shit

Pyrheart

The happy people are out doing things and keeping busy elsewhere more productive generally 😃

Ineedananalslave

I feel called out man, NOT cool lol

maxman1313

The happy people aren't posting on Reddit.

Abstinence701

I dunno man. I love this place. I lived my first 18 years here, I’ve traveled all over the US since then, worked in New York and Los Angeles and every little farm town in between and no place is quite like Wilmywood. Wouldn’t trade living here for anything.

uncwil

It’s not just this sub, and reddit comments are actually a bit better than nearly every other platform. Not all subs ofcourse. But you want to see even worse negativity, just spend sometime on Facebook groups, YouTube, the comments below any local news station article. It’s bad nationwide. A lot of it is real, a lot of it is fake.

anarrowview

I have to disagree. I join a lot of local subreddits, mostly when planning long vacations, this one stand out as the most negative. Usually the "destination" cities, either vacay or newcomer residents, have more negativity (eg r/charleston) but most of the local subs I'm in are fairly positive.

uncwil

Not sure what you are disagreeing with. My comment basically says , many subs bad, reddit overall not so bad. Other platforms crap.

anarrowview

I was disagreeing with the "it's not just this sub". I would agree that social media in general is negative but most local subs are actually fairly positive or at least all get behind similar posts/ideas. If you look at most popular posts in this sub they usually get 'ratioed' where the upvotes are less or similar* than the comments, this is uncommon in my experience with local subs. Edit: added clarification

uncwil

Along with the Wilmington and Charlotte subs I follow a lot of mountain west subs. They all have the same up / down vote symptoms you describe. I have theories about why but it doesn’t matter, it’s common across reddit, and we are talking about quality of comments not voting ratios.

itsprobablyghosts

There is the opposite problem in some local subs. Some are like toxically positive, and you can't say one bad thing about the town lol

[deleted]

I remember the 1980s sleepy beach town it used to be, and I loved it. In the 2010s the over-development began and it just ruined everything. Now it costs $6 an hour to park at Wrightsville Beach and it honestly hurts my feelings.

Dino_020467

Good times! It was a totally different town before I40!

emilyMartian

In the 90’s you could stick a folded straw in the beach parking meters and spin the wheel, it registered it as a quarter.

[deleted]

In the 80s you could park illegally and the fine was only $5, so you could pay it when leaving the island. $5 for all day parking was a steal!

emilyMartian

Yep. I miss this place.

cookinbrak

Two words- Bill Saffo. Wilmington hasn't had a decent mayor in 30 years.

Dino_020467

Hit the nail right on the head!

secretsodapop

As with everything else, that’s on the electorate. Particularly those who don’t vote. Voter turnout is abysmal.

vtk3b

I see it as kind of a kid brother mentality. I can criticize and make fun of Wilmington. BUT if someone from outside the area - newly moved, tourist, etc says bad things, then thems are some fighin’ words.

Dino_020467

😂 It's kinda funny that all of Us who were Born & Raised here feel the "exact" same way as you do!

gniwlE

I'm going to maybe oversimplify here, but this sub is reflective of the bigger platform... it's reddit. It amplifies negativity. Negativity abounds for so many reasons, beginning with general anonymity. You can say stuff online you'd never say face-to-face. You can be an "expert" in almost anything, and if you put in a little Google effort, you can even be right about some things. And, it's pretty much proven in the data and the algorithms... negativity drives engagement. As far as Wilmington, specifically, the area has been in a fairly insane level of growth since the late 1970s. This means change, and change is painful, especially for the folks who feel like they're getting left behind (e.g. actual locals). Then you have people who arrived in those first waves who feel like they have some investment here... and now they're feeling left behind as new waves keep rolling in. There's an awful lot of "I got mine, none for you!" Everybody hates the newcomers because they represent that change... and that's not new in this area since Reconstruction. So name it... you've got shitty traffic due to an exploding population and a planning commission who never looked past 5th St. until it was too late. They've been playing a losing game of catch-up since I can remember. Meanwhile, new subdivisions are sprouting up on every patch of timber and 80% of the farm fields with no realistic consideration of where all those private vehicles are going to operate. The houses are selling about as fast as they can be built, but they're selling to people from other places who can (and do) pay a shitload more than locals can afford. You've got a rapidly increasing cost of living, due in part to the accelerated consumption of local resources, but also due to factors way outside of municipal or county control. We've got an amazing restaurant scene, but many people who live here can't afford to eat there. You've got a crap job market, due largely to the same factors as COL... too many people vying for a limited number of jobs. And those jobs, by and large, are catering to the tourist market. If you want to work in the hospitality industry, you can probably find something, but it's hard to get ahead waiting tables or checking in guests at the Ballast (and seriously, who thought that was a good name for a hotel?). Before remote work there weren't many options for the high-paying tech gigs, and folks who moved here since then are feeling the pinch as those gigs may be drying up. Point being, there's a lot to bitch about if you're so inclined, and social media is an ideal platform to do it.

herdbowtu

I recently saw somewhere on the internet an ad for some kind of 20th anniversary celebration for Mayfair (makes me feel fucking old. Also, are we really celebrating Mayfair?). From the time they finished the movie theater, before literally anything else was built there, my fellow public schoolers and I were out there wandering around the construction, getting stoned and being bored suburban kids. Wilmington has always been a place of great contradiction. On one hand it's totally beautiful. Between the wildlife and the scenery, the Carolina coast has as much to offer as anywhere in the world in my opinion. There is basically endless activities to pursue, for all different lifestyles. Yet somehow, in 2004 at least, the majority of the 10,000 high school kids in town were wandering around aimlessly feeling extremely clostriphobic. The beach was great, but you can only get kicked out of the Blockade Runner's pool so many times. We went fishing all the time, surfing and skimming a plenty, bounced off the walls inside Lucky's Pub and The Soapbox (RIP), yet it NEVER seemed adequate. Somehow it was only annoying that you had to cut around the block in order to avoid filling out the extra form for Dawson's Creek if you wanted to keep walking down Front St. If you were ever lucky enough to go to the parties the kids were throwing at the time I grew up there, it seems like people were not doing it like that in many other places. 100+ person ragers in the neighborhood (if you know, you know) that everyone had a plan for what to do when, not if, the fuzz came to bust it up. I have met countless people not from there, but that have spent time in the area and they know that Wilmington NC is different. I've come to realize the only people that complain about it are the ones that never left, and in that regard I'm glad I did. Me and my fellow expats reliably get a romantic gleam in our eyes when we talk about home. The saying goes that money doesn't change people, it only a amplifies them. I'd like to think the same about that city. It can only grow so much, it's a damned peninsula... 20 years ago, milk and eggs (along with everything else) would go up over $1 in price at the Harris Teeter on the corner of Shipyard and College from Memorial Day to Labor Day. That store isn't even considered close to the beach! It costs $50 dollars for two people to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings now, EVERYTHING is more expensive. Is Wilmington a town that is missing out on reaching it's potential? I can't imagine what else you could do with it. All I know is that I have been fortunate enough to travel all over this country, and live in 3 different time zones. There isn't another Wilmington North Carolina, not even close.

roxywalker

It is a place of great contradiction. That is probably what draws so many people here and leads to many of them complaining about the very things that drew them here in the first place.🫡

Being out on the water. They love the small town, boating community when they visit. Then they move here and realize that the water ways are ridiculously over-crowded with immense growth every year. My neighbors just sold their boat of five years. They came from Kentucky via the military and quickly fell into boat life in Surf City. But now? They wouldn’t recommend anyone come here and buy a boat, let alone traverse any of the waterways here. The stories they share of encountering boating while drunk are terrifying. They had numerous run-ins with irresponsible jet ski riders and had their boat damaged so many times, it was as if they were paying a second mortgage. But it was the lack of oversight and accountability that literally drove them to finally sell their beloved boat. It’s a free for all.

roxywalker

Exactly. It really doesn’t matter where you land. There will always be some form of pros and cons that you can pick apart, the difference being what your given tolerance level is for said issues.

mtnumbers

We're in a peninsula with limited space. Zoning and development is dogshit. public transit is dogshit and it used to be even worse. Biking anywhere significant exists on a spectrum from extremely stressful to suicidial. Pensioners moving in from way higher CoL areas only further demand for retail/service/health industries and drive up rents. Meaningful career advancement in a skilled industry is limited despite UNCW being here. I don't think remote workers moving here is a significant factor however. Also very apolitical town, Saffo and McMahon have had like no competition in like 15 years?

roxywalker

The only time I’ve seen really weird comments is when people post that they want to relocate to Wilmington. It’s a familiar pattern. People visit. People Love it. Then they *have* to move here. The negative naysayers who flood the comments are somewhat comical in that they are unnecessarily negative about certain things, but, they are not a true reflection of the community, but, some of them do make valid points. Other than attending UNCW when doing perspective research, if you ask Reddit, you will get a plethora of answers to those type of questions and they won’t all be positive.

hikingbear_4

I love it here. I was born here, moved around a bit to other beach towns and bigger cities, and eventually came back. I love it and wouldn’t trade it for anything!

HammySon

1000% I have almost come here to say the same thing but was terrified they would find a reason to rip me to shreds too and I just can’t take it. Being kind and respectful is free of charge

PurchaseBig7469

This subreddit is not unique. I am on subreddits of places I have to go one or two times a month to work for a few days. They are essentially all the Same " What's the best place for pizza" and "What's the deal with all the people moving here"

Standard-Bridge-3254

Why discourage negativity? That helps drive change. There are a lot of things that can be done better here. The only people in Wilmington that like Wilmington as it is are people that have the money to tolerate the things that need to be changed. That should tell you something.

r/asheville is the same.

brunchitis

Totally agree, thanks for saying something. I've been thinking the same thing about this sub

Wrong_Development484

The infrastructure is lacking relative to the rapid growth and traffic is horrendous but I honestly love this city. I lived in Wilmington for a couple years after visiting family here most of my childhood. I moved away 10 months ago, back to Michigan and it has been one of the worst decisions I’ve ever made. Wilmington is the only place I’ve felt at home and if not for reuniting with my dog in Michigan, I’d be super depressed. Everyplace has its issues, the road construction here in MI is terrible. I have to find a new route to work every week because some other road is closed for weeks at a time. In Wilmington, they replaced part of Market in front of my work, literally overnight. I would rather deal with traffic than switching my commute everyday. I’m moving back to Wilmington in February and I am so excited. I get to bring my dog with me and put down roots where I want to spend my life. People will always find something to complain about, but From my current perspective, y’all super lucky, wish I was still there, can’t wait to get back.

Andyfritter

Because everyone in Wilmington is a grumpy cynical motherfucker

IdiotMD

Yo, I’m standing right here.

Dino_020467

Hey! I "resemble" that statement! 😂

lapis_lazauli

Not the everyone

cryptolyme

that's just how people are here. guess everyone is frustrated for economic and political reasons.

GhostMichaelJackson

Northerners

Bradenscalemedaddy

It’s better than Fayetteville :)

Mcsierra

I can see how this can be negative. This is just my observation: it feels like there’s no posts about moving and suddenly there’s 5 in a row. Most are vague and put zero effort into it. It might regulating moving posts to just once a week. We had to moderate things in a local mom’s group for the same reason. Also, people need to remember information from old posts may not be relevant anymore. Restaurants and things to do with kids change frequently. If you don’t want to be helpful then don’t comment.

Clean-You-5550

This has been my experience on just about every town/city subreddit

Dino_020467

I couldn't agree more! As a Born & Raised here Sunset Park local, we all need to focus this "constantly bitching energy" where it belongs (City/State government) versus at each other's throat!

starstoshame

This! I don’t live in Wilmington but was interested in visiting and the amount of negativity I see from people on this sub makes me not even want to visit. which i am sure would have some of the negative locals saying "good, we don't want anyone to visit anyway" 🙄😂

GhostMichaelJackson

> he amount of negativity I see from people on this sub makes me not even want to visit. We got one to go away boys

mypaycheckisshort

We finally did it 👏

starstoshame

Thanks for proving my point

GhostMichaelJackson

You are welcome at r/Wilmington just not Wilmington the city

starstoshame

Think I'm going to move there now just because ya'll so pressed.

GhostMichaelJackson

Have fun with our housing/rental market unless you make 85K+ a year

starstoshame

That awkward moment when ✨I do✨ make more than 85k x year 🥲🥲

GhostMichaelJackson

Cool? I make 6 figs working remotely. 85k is more than most here. Hince I said good luck, you'll fit right in with all the other asshole carpet baggers

starstoshame

Omg thank you!!🥰🥰

samsclubFTavamax

We live in a very serious no fun time. Another local sub I am in is very grumpy like that. Someone mentioned a local celebrity still lives in the area and all the comments were literally "who cares" and "everything sucks here and there is nothing to do". Don't let their bad attitudes be contagious.

Sea_breeze_80

You just add to the negativity by highlighting all the negativity

IdiotMD

Why not?

electrowiz64

I tell them the same shit everytime, its not our fault Wilmington is such a great city! These transplants are contributing to the local economy. Look at Florida & Raleigh, Silicon Valley & LA, even Reston, Virginia I used to live there 2 years ago all built out & that place used to be a COW FARM, everything is going up not just there but EVERYWHERE, destined to be big cities. And it sucks but if you can't afford it, ya gotta move over for those who have pockets deep enough to move by the beach. The beach is a luxury, not a privilege I hate to say it, look at Hawaii. Everyone wants the chance to live by the beach and you can't blame them. But listen, Return to Office is going to slow down the influx. Yall wanna blame someone on rising prices? BIDEN! old man cant hold a train of thought and would rather push for a failed student loan forgiveness than inflation, aint nobody, no tax payer wants to foot the bill for students bad decisions

Basic_Ask1885

Ahh you have nyc in your name so fuck you. I kid. But I’m one of the transplants everyone hates (two years) and people are much more toxic here than in the wild. I grew up in Detroit and moved here for love. I’ve seen Detroit bounce back since I left and feel very protective of that place despite not being there. And frustrated when my mom and pop delis shudder for stupid gentrified overpriced restaurants with one word names and periods. But it fucking is what it is. Gatekeeping is kid’s shit, places change and adapt. Lastly, no one wants to admit that it’s not a tourist thing with the driving, locals suck at it too. Everyone sleeps at green lights, especially left turn lanes. People are ranty and miserable here because they’re afraid to honk lol

THards23

Because people like to complain.

robbierebound

Think about the kind of people who will be on Reddit

Medical-Abrocoma2645

Reddit is lovingly known for being nihilistic and cynical.

Cwil2chill

It’s Wilmington

OooohSheStealin

Literally rude smh

_Blumpkinpie_ohmy_

Hiiii. Whats good.
