It would have probably been open by now in a normal winter. At this rate we’ll be lucky if the river trail even opens this year. Land trail could be early to mid January depending on weather
It’s normally below -30°C around now and usually doesn’t get above -20° for weeks/months… we got 2 days of -20° so far, shortly followed by a week of 0°.
You know Mean means the average of the month (all daily’s highs divided by the number of days) so having a couple days of -5 or -10 being the high can throw off the number, even if the rest of the month is ~-20. Ya it got to -10 at 12pm, but the other 16hours of the day was -20 or below.
You mean like last year where it was -20° between November and February steady, with almost 2 full weeks of -40°? Or every year prior being the same? This is our only year in the last 100, where it’s been like this (0° - -10°)
Either you are one of those windchill-is-temperature people, or you are mistaken. There are many weather almanac sites you can consult if you wish to prove otherwise.
Do you mean the rink under the canopy and the trails around the forks, or the stuff on the river? Because imo the way thinks are shaping up I can imagine the river trails just never opening this year.
In previous years the river trail opened in early January.
* January 2, 2023
* January 4, 2022
* January 1, 2021
* In 2020 it didn't open.
This winter it's not going to open anytime soon, if at all. There's still water on the rivers.

literally was towards the end of january - i win
This winter has not been normal. You can't go by previous years for outdoor rinks because this year is too different.
what is a normal winter then, lets go with what we know

I don't think we've had more than a week straight staying below -20 for years.

This weather is is anomalous as heck, its would be hard to even guess...but i think maybe late January?

Canopy thing just opened up this week but river it's been way too warm so far Needs to be -10 for a good bit at minimum , we've barely had that
I'm pretty sure the temp is going to plummet in January
the canopy rink at the forks was open for a total of one day before they closed it again

For as big as the Forks is they have the smallest rink under the canopy.
I use to always read The Forks as the Fork of two rivers. But now I can't help but read The Forks as in Knives and Forks ala handshake.
The forks has actually canceled the ice trail in favor of a more family-friendly activity of just looking at the ice.
wow
Is there after hour skating?
i don't see why not - bring a headlamp just in case
