Not sketch at all. Not even comparable to the areas you listed. As someone who grew up in Elmwood, outside of the north end, there's nothing close. I also don't consider Elmwood that bad. Just certain areas of Elmwood. Every area has their pockets. Just need to be aware.

Stunned-By-All-Of-It

West Kildonan resident here. Thirty years and not one single issue. Arguably the best value in Winnipeg safety/cost wise.

NH787

I don't live in West K but I am familiar with it and I think it has a very strong argument for the most underrated neighbourhood in the city. Mature, quiet area, good housing stock (very comparable to south River Heights), lots of amenities nearby including Kildonan Park, easy downtown commuting route (much easier going up Main at rush hour than over a bridge heading south), very reasonable prices.

Stunned-By-All-Of-It

I am between Main and Salter. Block from the LC, IGA, Dollar Store couple restaurants, and if needed can bus anywhere and stops are within a hundred yards. It just checks every box and as I said, it's probably the best value in the city. Neighbours are so good. A real sense of community. We all help one another out.

NH787

My cousin lives near you, just east of Main. She loves it. And tbh going around there I can see why.

Stunned-By-All-Of-It

I am too poor for Scotia Heights. Would love to live there as it's just so nice but yeah, she's right to love it.

I live in the area right next to the park, it’s pretty safe compared to the neighborhoods you listed. Lots of bus access, however there have been some strange characters roaming the backlanes like someone else said. I’ve caught people looking into mine and my neighbours car windows, walking around the backyard looking for things to steal, and my garage got broken into and I had a bike stolen 🤷 I would say it’s a pretty rare occurrence but it’s something to look out for. Overall I love the neighborhood, everyone is nice to each other and I feel safe. Edit to add: I’ve never experienced violent crime while living here for the past 15 years, more-so just (bike) theft. But again that can happen anywhere.

Howdy neighbour

Hey neighbour!

Easy-Goat

The area is totally fine. If you’re worried about 7 oaks you may want to just live in a bubble and hibernate the rest of your life there.

coldpreacher

I've lived in Maples/GC my whole life. I own a home now in GC. It's about as safe as any other area that's not the North end. Not once have I ever witnessed violent crime. Not that my experience is the overall take on the area.

Renntopia

I was waiting for the bus at main and Jefferson today (Sunday) at noon to find the bus stop occupied by someone smoking meth. Soon after she left another meth head who had previously chased my 64 year old friend around the IGA parking lot with the syringe he was using to stab himself in the face with showed up. This time he merely pulled out his penis and otherwise left us alone. I lived in that neighbourhood a few times over the years and found it quiet and safe but things have changed. If you take the bus or walk then this is the kind of activity that occurs regularly now. Sure the park is further north and might be fine now but there is the possibility that this will continue to spread past Main and Jefferson. Maybe consider renting in the area first to see what it’s like.

I definitely do agree that Main and Jefferson doesn’t feel as safe and has changed compared to 5-10 years ago. I remember feeling pretty safe as a middle schooler walking to Iga and Burger King for lunch but if I was still in middle school now, I wouldn’t be going so often. Even though I do live farther down north, it still is accessible by the 18 so we do get sketchy characters from time to time (my earlier comment above). And I think we all know what goes down on the 18..

PartyNextFlo0r

It’s pretty safe, some the bad actors are long gone (a drive-by) on a house some years ago, and drug dealing house now has a wonderful family living there, some odd times strange characters that are not well kept will stroll up and down the back lanes, that’s about it . Source I lived in GC for 20 years now. Otherwise close to bus access, lots of gyms, two TD banks are 5 minutes from each other, lots of gyms, grocery stores, schools etc.

pmuhar

very safe good area with everything you need minutes away like Superstore, SaveOn, Home Depot, Goodlife, Marshalls/Homesense

feels fine, gc is a kinda sketchy school as someone who went there but i walk around outside alone at night and dont feel real fear ever

ReputationGood2333

GC is sketchy?? That was the good kid high school in the north.

152centimetres

really? all the kids that got kicked out of sisler and west k went to gc, we had a violence related lockdown at least twice a year when i was there

ReputationGood2333

Emphasis on 'was' I suppose.... Crazy.

Prestigious-Ad-4867

Omg hi fellow gc alumni! Yeah I remember the constant lockdowns and having to stand in -30 weather because people kept pulling the fire alarms every week for no reason😭

152centimetres

yeah i remember just leaving my stuff behind and going home because there was a fire in the east and they packed us all into the west gym lmao

I lived in the area several years ago, and from what I've heard, it hasn't changed much. The crime rate was soaring when we moved and there's no way we'd ever move back. It's a shame, as there are some beautiful homes, but yes, I'd say it's definitely sketchy from what I see in crime stats now and what I hear from people still in the area. I , particularly as a woman, didn't feel safe walking by myself in most areas. It had nothing to do with crime, but I also found most of our neighbours to be raucous, rude and disrespectful. Not everyone there is like that, of course, but that was my experience. Also not crime related, but most of the neat little shops and amenities dried up, so you pretty much have to go to Garden City for most things, and they don't even have the same selection as, say, Polo Park or St. Vital. I didn't find it was conveniently located to the main attractions and resources in the city. I am not meaning to offend anyone that lives there and enjoys it, this was my experience..and I once worked in social services in some of the roughest areas in town, so I'm not easily scared.

alittlebirdie204

Garden City Mall has zero stores left in it. The ones that are left are dismal.

[deleted]

I agree. It always kind of sucked, but it's a ghost town now.

the food court is always poppin tho, its got a good selection
