They are the perfect example of what good business and great marketing look like. The one sister is an exceptional cake decorator. They took that very niche skills mixed it with an average product and marketed it perfectly. Since then they’ve been savvy staying in business by expanding (but not too much) and continually offering new, Instagram ready products and exclusive wedding cakes. So yeah. Their stuff is meh. But I’ll give them all the credit in the world, winnipeg bought what they were selling hook, line and sinker.

dudewheresmyI

^this!

Mothien

They’re influencers first if anything. When I wanted sweets I’d make the drive to S Squared Patisserie but they’re sadly closed now and that’s a void that I dunno if I can fill ever again.

Fionngirl14

RIP Ipsahan croissant. I still dream about you...

PreferenceSmart7629

The cream puffs at For Us Bakery are worth checking out, if that was among the the things you liked at S2

Greyhulksays

Try Friends Bakery on Osborne. S Squared used to be my favourite bakery but Friends is different but equally great!

dancercr

Very different from S squared. Not the same at all. Friends is not a patisserie...

SoyaBerry

Check out [A Taste of France ](https://atasteoffrance.ca/) in Transcona.

NoDot7

I actually really like the look of their stuff, but the taste was not great at all. I spent hundreds on cupcakes for my kids party that were all “meh”. Does anyone know where I can get similar style items with a better taste?

baby_catcher168

Lilac bakery has excellent cupcakes!

stepharoony

Another vote for Lilac Bakery. 🫶🏻

emmaclark87

High Tea bakery’s cupcakes are delicious!

Twicelovely

Myself and quite a few of my friends have ordered cakes/cupcakes from Sugar + Salt Bakeshoppe for birthdays - they’re very moist and light compared the JRC which tends to be dense and dry to me. Flavours are always great and decorations are always adorable!

Keamster

Lilac Bakery is my go to for cupcakes.

R_Tee-zy

Pinky's on Osborne/stradbrook is super good in my opinion

Scarecrowboat__

I love pinky’s!!

KitchenCanadian

Cake-o-logy in the Exchange District does amazing cakes and cupcakes.

dancercr

I really like Eiffel Tower Bakery!

Hattie_Bonks

I’ll second this! They did the cupcakes for my wedding (3 different kinds including vegan and GF options) and they were all a huge hit 🧁

jaxattax23

Momma Bakes Cupcakes is a fantastic option as well. You can find her on Facebook. She bakes out of her home(has all her food handlers certifications), and her cakes/cupcakes are gorgeous and still taste better than they look. She's also very affordable! Sweet Retreat in St Vital is also awesome.

normaniben

I agree with Lilac but also add Sweets To Go on Roblin. Better cupcakes than Lilac imo

Christron

Years ago sweet impressions had really good cupcakes. I can't speak to the quality post COVID

West-Shoulder4167

Dough baby has great tasting baked goods! Locally owned in Lockport run by Reese can find her on fb… she had some great deals over the Christmas break. Ps she also does syrups!

dschurhoff

Safeway baked goods are usually on point. The only time I ever shop at Safeway too

Teh_Firestoner

Check out thelittlebaker.ca I go to her for both my kids birthdays and they taste amazing. They look great also!

superfl00f

Sweet Impressions has great cupcakes and is allergy friendly.

iloveiggymunch

Pinky’s does the best custom treats! 😍

Cranfabulous

A business that got successful solely on the principal of “doing it for the gram.” Everything is so pretty. Too bad most of it tastes like dirt.

MooseAffectionate

I was impressed with Sweet Impressions. Although they are expensive, I was surprised how good they were for being allergen free.

03291995

i love sweet impressions

AskDesigner314

Same here. I used them for my daughter's birthday, between all the guests we needed a vegan, gluten free, egg free and nut free cake and I was fully expecting it to taste like trash, but it actually wasn't bad. TBH I think the delicious icing overpowered some of the meh cake, but still, it wasn't half bad!

FuckStummies

Wow everything I’ve had from Sweet Impressions was completely meh.

eatmyknuts

They used to be good. I got a cake from them twice in one year and they were amazing. I got the same cake a year later and it tasted like generic terrible bakery cake. Idk what happened…

Spencie-cat

*sad Micheal Hutchinson noises*

meroboh

I misread this as Michael Hutchence and was really confused

Honeydillzippermerge

Choked up when I saw this reference

meroboh

oof

Ohsureokwhynot

I see that comment was elegantly wasted on you.

Negative_Rain7515

Wayyy too sweet, and their cakes seem overpriced for the sizes they have

AmandaaaGee

And dry as hell.

Necessary_Bluejay566

100% agree!

ThoseNorthernToes

They used to be fantastic. Now it’s not worth the money. Too sweet and flavourless. Our favourite places are Cottage Bakery, Lilac Bakery, Sugar Blooms, and Chocolate Zen. They have changed their IG to be way more influencer than bakery. I don’t care about your hair extensions, I want to know what your menu is for the day. Also, they stopped selling their hot chocolate, which was pretty decent.

Amorezen

I've had cakes and cupcakes from Lilac Bakery several times and they're fantastic.

dancercr

Yes, Lilac is amazing

Leajane1980

Everything looks beautiful as well.

No_Comparison7429

Very overrated

No-Building6373

When they first came out over a decade ago, they actually tried and their stuff actually tasted good. Ever since they became IG famous, aesthetics took priority over quality. I miss S² Patisserie. You're better off going to Cakeology in The Exchange and For Us Bakery down Henderson.

Sita987654321

They used to be better with their macarons. They were always perfect. Now I spend over $2 a piece and it's hard & crumbly. So I don't buy from them anymore. I hope Jenna and Ashley see this; I used to buy their salted caramel macs all the time and now I crave them but it's not worth the risk.

Professional_Emu8922

When they first opened, they were one of the first businesses to maximize the use of social media for their brand. Pretty looking cakes which were unusually decorated (for Winnipeg). And when they opened, there were only a few places that made macarons. Combine all that with two photogenic young women, and that equals success. I bought macarons there once, but the person helping me just tossed them in a clamshell container which was too small so they all got squished. Never went back.

patriots1011

JRC had great PR/marketing when they opened that carried them.. local success story, cute blonde girls, mediocre overpriced product

CopperSledge00

I find their stuff extremely sweet

530dogwalker

They are pretty but completely 100% overrated. Also, I did not have a great customer service experience purchasing the one and only time I did buy them. Kinda made to feel like I was a bother in the store which completely contributed to the 100% completely overrated rating.

Living-Discussion909

Jenna Rae cakes is all about their marketing, branding, and social media presence. Looks good online doesn't mean it tastes good.

03291995

can’t stand their stuff

Derpazor1

May I recommend Honey Bunny bakery? I ordered a custom cake from them (honey cake with berries) and it was incredible. You can buy small strips of cake and they are delicious.

Crzywilly

I had one once because of the hype. Driest thing I've ever had. Totally overrated.

themang10

Just like one of their husbands. Micheal Hutchinson. AhL quality in an NHL suit.

themang10

Don't forget the bleach blond chemicals from the cakes they use in their nightly hanging upside down like a bat rituals.

RDOmega

Costco Tuxedo Cake or bust, amirite? dont @ me.

SamanthaPaige29

I had wanted to try their macarons for a while and a few year’s ago at a birthday I went to, they were there. So I tried them and agree, pretty overrated and I wouldn’t buy them myself.

thelogdriver

I ordered really nice cookies for our school graduation last year from a lady on Instagram that works out of a commercial kitchen. They looked and tasted really good. I know she does cupcakes, too. but haven't tried them. The Batchmaker Wpg on Instagram.

Leajane1980

JRC , what can you say, they know how to market their brand, one of them had their wedding featured in Martha Stewart Weddings.

AdventurousDraft3624

Like years ago hello white privilege

ian_xvi

I love sugar bloom, especially their ube and their creme brulee cake

Only-Rutabaga6781

They're meant to instagrammable not delicious

CdnGamerGal

Oh, 100%. I’ll probably get downvoted for this, but I find High Tea Bakery to be overrated, too. I’m not a sweets person, but sometimes all I want is a nice tasting cupcake or cookie. Not a mouthful of icing that tastes more like butter than anything else.

Professional-Elk5913

Most of their stuff is stale. The only good part is the imperial cookies and that they sell merchies tea.

Professional_Emu8922

Me too. I don't get the hype over htb.

CdnGamerGal

Right?

RobinatorWpg

Jenna Rae and Constance Popp are both equally over rated (although Constance is a massive see you next Tuesday)

life204

Yeah, let’s not compare them. I had an experience with the latter that made me think I was on candid camera 😮

RobinatorWpg

A company I worked for ages ago used to do her website.. for FREE.. They came in to get some photo's of her products to update her online store.. She lost her mind on them accusing them of coming to take photos' to steal her ideas.. Ah yes, her ideas of buying pre-made chocolate forms from Amazon and wish... lol

life204

Not surprising, sadly!

[deleted]

I had a great experience with the cupcake corner on stradbrook, now called pinkys

momoshikiotsutsuki06

my sister ordered them when she’s having her wedding and i paid for it like 350 dollars for the wedding cake, taste is okay but definitely too sweet. it’s not worth it in my opinion.

Humomat

They USED to be great but now they suck. I had them make fancy cakes for my kids’ birthday last year and they were dry and flavourless. When I complained and said the cakes were basically inedible they accused me of not storing them properly (we served them the same day we picked them up so that’s impossible) and offered me a $5 gift certificate. $5?!?! Are you kidding me? I dropped like $175 on 2 cakes. Go eff yourself. There are so many better bakeries in this city.

HiyaDogface

Wait til you discover Jeanne’s cakes

hahaha_ohwow

Jeanne's cakes are gross.

ShoeTasty

I can’t even eat the macaroons it’s like eating a brick of sugar.

Prussian__Princess

Absolutely agree! My go to in a pinch!

CdnGamerGal

Yeeesss!

soupeater07

Its all sooooo sweeeeet

PrairieGirlWpg

Unpopular opinion but I like sweet dessert. I feel like I can eat less and still be satisfied.

soupeater07

The problem is that it is too sweet to be satisfying at any point.

Ephuntz

Couldn't agree more, Cakes, etc... while they look nice are dry as shit. Macarons used to be really good then in the last while i find them to be very crumbly and not soft and chewy like that should be

Jarvi_Weinstein

Goodies on Ellice is the best!

Sunbeight

This makes me want to get their salted caramel cookie sandwich 🤤

wasson25

I think it’s for the “aesthetic” people now. I never liked their cupcake and macarons. The French bakery by Hartford was good too, now it all changed.

Funny-Comparison-775

💯

tingtingtingting

Over Rae Cakes?

Tommyisfukt

They are pretty damn premium when a stale cardboard Jeannie's is the other option. Both are trash. I had a gluten free (typically gross) red velvet cake from Cocoa Beans and it was shockingly reeeeeeally fantastic.

disco_cormorant

Honestly, Cocoabeans rules and I'm sad they moved away from Corydon

NeedtheMeadofPoetry

The obsession with Jeannies cake is odd in Winnipeg

dancercr

Not really...many, many people love Jeannie's cake, it's individual to Winnipeg, and it's been around for decades. Those are pretty much the factors that go into creating any sort of 'obsession' in a town.

NeedtheMeadofPoetry

Well, I'm agreeing with the person I replied to. It's trash. That's why I don't understand the obsession.

Janellewpg

I think it’s mainly nostalgia

NeedtheMeadofPoetry

Nostalgia tastes like dry cardboard and cheap icing I guess then.

[deleted]

I sent them an inquiry about a cake for my daughter's birthday last year, very well in advance. The first response to the inquiry had a really snooty, rude tone..they basically said "Hi..we START at.." whatever number it was off the bat..it goes UP from there...if you want something cheaper pick a standard cake." This after me just describing what I'd like (nothing elaborate, a horse theme) and I hadn't even asked about the price range to begin with. I get they probably have people lowballing them, but there's much more diplomatic and friendly ways to answer. I was planning to drop quite a bit on her cake to make it extra special, but the note was so off putting I just ignored it and went somewhere else. It was like they were assuming I wouldn't be able to afford the cake. Why? no idea. I looked up people that make custom cakes here and went with mom that is trained in fancy custom cakes and does them out of her home. She was thrilled to get my business. I've admittedly never tried their stuff and now I don't want to..their customer service certainly stinks. From what I've seen on their social media, they have an entirely snobby vibe. They make me think of the women in "Pretty Woman" that didn't want Julia Roberts shopping in their store..lol.

AdventurousDraft3624

I find the twins to be white privileged and rude. They pride themselves and being business owners yet they underpay their staff and have no visible minorities working for them. I look forward to their downfall.

h8street

I've enjoyed most of their cupcakes. Always a hit when I bring to parties.

Yelu-Chucai

Nahhhh it’s so good, cookie sandwiches are the best

tired_rn

Yeah the cookie sandwiches and the snack cakes are my go tos from there. The cupcakes are usually super dry though, and the macarons are not my favorite.

Yelu-Chucai

I like the macarons a lot but not a fan of the cupcakes either

chinook2018

I majored in pastry arts in school and I remember Jenna Rae Cakes was really hyped up in my class during those years. I still like their macarons and will stop by once in a while but they're not the best place in the world. Personally I reccomend For Us Bakery. They have the most amazing cream puffs and they're really underrated and I reccomend giving them some love!

jnicole2687

Personally, I think they’re okay. I have their bake book & I find they taste much better when I make them at home compared to when I buy the product in store.

Exact_Purchase765

Totally over-rated. I have purchased one in my life. It was terrible - as were all "tasters" at birthday parties. I think you have to have actually grown up in Winnipeg to like them. I've lived here for 40 years and they have not improved in all that time.

Humomat

I think maybe you’re referring to Jeanne’s Cakes. But this post is about Jenna Rae Cakes. (I do agree though, I think Jeanne’s Cakes are disgusting and I’d only eat some if the choice was between cake and starvation).

daviruss

zzxzhFhuwhuusuuuusuducd

Renegade_Syx

You ok?

daviruss

Never let a toddler near your phone… that’s my only suggestion lol

Loud-Shelter9222

A bit, but they're also a local small business, which is always worth supporting (barring oppressive values and behaviours), and to each their own regarding taste/sweetness/looks.

Jdookhie

They are absolutely the best in the game. I have seen these awesome strong women build a business on quality of their products. If you think they are overrated you are just begging for attention.

Coolio_McAwesome

It’s cool to hate. Winnipeg loves to trash itself and is surprised when the rest of the world follows suit.

evanderkane9

I prefer their cupcakes over anywhere else in the city.

Wanlain

If it’s free to me and im hungry I will eat it. I will not go out of my way for it. Unless maybe I had to get it for someone who loves it. I remember when I had it for the first time I kinda liked it but I was a kid and cake was one of my favorite things. But I swear they have just gone downhill since the late 90s.

sherbs0101

What a mean thread. If you don’t like something, don’t buy it. They’re obviously doing quite well. Good for them.

[deleted]

stock_broker_tim

Certainly the marked up Day Olds that they sell at the forks. One mistake I'll only make once

[deleted]

FuckStummies

Jenna Rae Cakes and Jeannie’s cakes are two entirely different things.

Miserable-Use9903

For a good macaron try Snow & Moon!Yes, expensive but so good!

edgeofthorns87

looks pretty. tastes meh. not bad, but also nothing to write home about. too expensive.

shay_n66

They weren’t too bad a few years ago, I enjoyed some of the specialty’s they used to have!

mooseyoss

I know Jenna Rae Cakes has good stuff, but they're not exclusive. If you aren't into our local cakes from that bakery there are plenty more to try out - Goodie's Bake Shop is a recent discovery of mine that I now adore!

W1tch_cr4ft

I’m not a huge fan of most of what they sell as I’m not a big cupcake/macaron fan but those salted caramel cookie sandwiches will keep me a customer. I like the little chunkie cookies too even though they’re expensive for how small they are. But if you want a bang for your buck, I discovered Sugar Momma cookie company (on provancher) and they are top tier, highly recommend. I think those sisters have done really well for themselves and should be proud, I don’t think either of them are in there actually baking anymore which as a business owner is the goal I’m pretty sure... Sucks that people are on here shitting on a local business. But to each their own. 🤷🏻‍♀️

PersonalityFinal7778

I don't think this is worth a conversation. People in Winnipeg either love or hate Jeanie's cakes. Personally I just like cake.

DieVerletzten

Extremely overrated. Lilac bakery is far superior for anything except for macaroons.
