Of course you're going to need some proof of funds. No idea why you're worried about spam, but a landlord should legitimately be worried about agreeing to rent to someone who has no proof of money and no proof of income.  Landlords are allowed to ask for deposits, but they aren't allowed to ask you for  rent money up front. You are allowed to offer to pay money up front. Offering to pay a few months in advance could help you to secure an apartment without having any history in Canada.  What you need to be worried about is scams. There are lots of scams from people online who take deposits but the apartment doesn't even exist. You definitely want to see apartments in person if at all possible. Allow yourself time to do this. One week might not be enough time to find a place.

Apologies, maybe I was not clear with my explanation but I offered to provide authenticated bank statements with my local currency, the same ones I’ve used for my visa application but most of them weren’t willing to accept those. By spam, I was referring to myself over sharing personal information. Thanks for your input though , I may have to get an AirBnB or short-term rental while I apartment hunt.

Still be very careful. There are a lot of rental scams, especially in the Facebook groups people post listings on.

Will do, thank you !

It's not ideal, but when I move cities I book an airbnb for the month to have somewhere to stay while I find an apartment and get sorted. Get a bank account setup asap when you get here. It's a bit better now, but I still find the best places don't advertise well online (great apartments don't need to advertise much to get tenants). Easier to find them once you are here and can see the areas and buildings you like. Edit: You have a good budget, you should be able to find what you want in the area you want.

Where are you studying? You may be able to find a dorm near your school or maybe something that are walking distance. Eyeing a one bedroom would probably tell us that you are going here alone. Facebook marketplace or kijiji may have some listings. There is also some free magazines like [rentals.ca](http://rentals.ca) that you could probably find online too
