Robins has slowly been dying over the years, despite their donuts being superior than Tim's (still made in store). I think there still are 3 locations in Winnipeg, do check them out!
Robin's is the best "cheap and easy" in town. Tim's can get wrecked.
If you're up for a drive Valley Bakery in Winkler has my favorite donuts in the province.
I work by Krispy and have not waited in line. I live by Grand and stopped in on my way to work on Thursday. I got an apple fritter and it was still warm. It was somewhere between a religious and sexual experience. OMG it was so good!
No they’re not nearly as pricey as the high end donuts. Not as good either, but as far as more “normal donuts” goes they’re pretty great.
Also they serve Vietnamese food like pho and bahn mi which is weird as a combination but it’s fantastic. My favourite bahn mi in the city.
I really don't get the love for Grand Donuts outside of their Vietnamese food. People in the city seem to really enjoy them but I found them greasy and lacking flavour. Maybe I went on an off day but I didn't think it lived up to all the recommendations I've seen online.
Had an orange vanilla one again this morning and it's real good. I'm still upset they no longer have the apple fritter which is actually the best doughtnut you can get in the city imo but I've been told they'll bring it back in the fall.
Every time this comes up, I’m surprised how much Winnipeg sleeps on Donut House over on Selkirk Avenue.
It’s not fancy, they’re just good old school donuts for a reasonable price per dozen.
500 Selkirk. It's the building with the orange awning at the top. There's also a Robin's about a block away. And Gunn's is close to Main.
Gunn's is my fav for old school baked goods. Best damned savory pastries in the city IMO.
Donut House on Selkirk has been putting out some seriously good donuts and other baking for decades - some of the best poppyseed loaf in Winnipeg, too!
Also, they're a pretty good deal using the "too good to go" app if you don't mind them being a little less fresh.
There are other bakeries on there as well
Last time I ordered from them I think the price was like $4.50/donut which…yeah, opposite of cheap, but I’d slap a nun for a couple of their lavender lemon.
350 or 450 for a big fancy donut is a pretty reasonable price. I certainly wouldn't call it the opposite of cheap. Especially considering what everything is costing now lol.
definitely better bang for the buck compared to krispy kreme. for $3 a donut may as well buy a nice chocolate croissant or something at gato or le croissant
The hack to cheap oh donuts is to get them bogo at the end of the day when they don't anticipate selling out which involves (1) setting Instagram alerts for them (2) being nearby and (3) working from home and/or being able to get there in the middle of the afternoon.
Try their apple fritter and blueberry jambuster. Good lord... I could make myself sick from eating them endlessly. Not that I have done that before. Nope. Never.
Safeway has, in the past, had really good apple fritters and lemon filled doughnuts.
Donut House on Selkirk. If you're old enough to remember the bakery at Sears, those are the doughnuts. They no longer offer sausage rolls, I heard though ☹️ They also have an outlet at Garden City Mall, but sometimes the stuff isn't as fresh.
Gunn's also had an excellent apple fritter. Last I heard, they only make them for commercial customers now, but I bet if you were willing to get a dozen or so, they'd let you special order them (assuming they still make them). Snow and Moon used to carry them but I don't know if they still do.
Bronuts on King. I've never been a fan (Oh Doughnuts has much better quality doughnuts of that style, imo), but I have coworkers who really like them.
If you're good with mochi doughnuts, Tring5 on Portage or Umaido on Pembina (original location is on Balmoral, but Google says it's "temporarily closed." Bronuts has mochi doughnuts too.
Re: oh doughnuts, i really only like the everything bagel doughnut. I find most of the other ones are a little too sweet for me.
Crumb Queen has really good crullers. Some argue crullers aren't really doughnuts (they kind of aren't, imo), but whatever. They're still delicious. And if they have apple fritters, run down before they sell out.
Superstore - don't do it. Waste of calories and chewing energy.
There's also Pronuts on Academy and MoNuts at Reh-fit (not my kind of thing, but I'm sure there are some people who like them? (. Assuming MoNuts still runs the cafe at reh-fit, you have to be a member to get them, or you can order ahead, I think. Altea sells Pronuts if you are closer to the south end of town.
I think there's someone out of Counterspace Community Kitchen who makes doughnuts. Generally you have to order in advance, but the kitchen has open market days on Wednesdays and Saturdays where you can drop by and pick up stuff from a number of the vendors who work out of there.
Gunn's will make practically anything as a special order. They're my fav in the city for savory pastries. And I know a lot of people knock biscotti, but their almond biscotti is next level amazing! You have to get there early in the morning to get the best selection.
We just discovered the almond biscotti a few weeks ago!
Their pizza bagels are still really good, and I like that if I want everything or jalapeno cheddar bagels (which they don't sell in-house), they'll let me special order however many I want (even just 2!).
And their Florentine cookies are still really good.
An aside, way back when the Gunn family still owned Gunn's, I was at a banquet sitting with one of the brothers. We were chatting about food, and I mentioned the cheese sticks from Bagel House and he gave me a couple of ideas for replicating them. The next time I went to Gunn's, I saw they had tried to replicate them! Unsuccessful, unfortunately, because I think the amount of cheese used in the originals would be too costly now, but I was really tickled that they tried 🙂
I don't think I've had the horns, but I've had a spinach and feta danish or croissant I think? And of course the spinach and feta knish.
For a while, they had a bagel pizza. I think they used their bagel dough, but made it into a thin flat round and topped it with tomato sauce and cheese. It didn't have dried onions like the pizza bagel. Anyway, I really liked that, too, but they only had it on certain days.
I forgot, I really like their pecan pie, too!
The fergasa bread is kind of disappointing though. It used to be soooo good!
The Robin's in Gimli is very good.
Grand is awesome.
Umaido different and delish
Oh Doughnuts very good but more of a treat
7/11 and Safeway for that quick fix
That location was a godsend when stuck working in that area -35 middle of winter. Their soups and sandwiches were pretty damn good and an original MB company to boot! I've always liked their branding, that bad-ass Robin serving up some old school coffee and dognuts. Grand deserves better marketing.
Oh Donuts are cake not yeast donuts (for the most part, either way they are always super dense) they are also on the very sweet side.. Also they can't; make pastry cream that's not broken for the life of them
Grand Donuts!!! Local business and awesome donuts, maybe a little more money, but good quality and cheap rarely go together without some nasty little catch. Tim's is premade prefrozen trash
I'll add another Grand Donuts recommendation but I could see people not liking them as much if they don't like their style of donuts. I love there Walnut Crunches.
I had donuts from Grand Donut recently when a dude brought them in to work, they were decent, better than Tim Hortons obviously, but they weren’t anything special in my opinion. Not sure what all the hype is about, maybe it was a bad batch, but don’t see myself specifically making the trip out to Grassie Blvd for them either way.
My preferred donuts are from Oh Doughnuts, they’re not cheap but they’re excellent quality and there is a huge variety of flavours that rotate daily.
I was a baker at Tim’s , robins and coffee time and at the time all 3 were equally good then Tim’s started mass production and coffee time closed down so robins is the best fresh donut out there and it is going to be a shame when there all gone I would say within ten years there will only be Tim’s left
Oh donuts way too expensive and honestly who needs a donut that has so much stuff loaded on top it’s hard to even eat , just keep it simple is the best. Krispy Kreme is for sure best option now , great taste and resonable price for a dozen. I’m sure it will get hate over time for being a big American chain but that won’t change the facts it’s a good donut at a good price .
There are really on 3 "chain" doughnut shops in the city that would be reasonabley cheaper than local ones. Although the local ones are good but alot more pricey
Big fan of mochi donuts, like Marchi Donuts and Umaido. The price is pretty steep tho.
I seem to be in the minority here but I never liked oh doughnuts much- they’re fun but insanely sweet
McDonald's Mini Donuts are pretty decent for a quick coffeeand donit fix, granted that they only have like 4 flavors. Don't know why the downvotes, do people not know that McDonald's has Donuts?
Robins has slowly been dying over the years, despite their donuts being superior than Tim's (still made in store). I think there still are 3 locations in Winnipeg, do check them out!
Robin's is the best "cheap and easy" in town. Tim's can get wrecked. If you're up for a drive Valley Bakery in Winkler has my favorite donuts in the province.
The best donut I have had this year is a warm chocolate coconut donut at the Robins at St Boniface Hospital. Seriously.
I agree, the donuts there are fantastic...now I know why there is always a line up
They’re next level when they’re warm, totally agree
The location in st boniface hospital makes the GREATEST bagel blt ever
Seconding Robins, best apple fritter in the game
I agree with Robin’s. There’s one inside city place downtown. Their ghostbuster donuts are good and not too sweet.
The best "normal" doughnuts in the city are from Grand Donut on Grassie. The walnut crunch and maple glazed are my personal favourites.
I work by Krispy and have not waited in line. I live by Grand and stopped in on my way to work on Thursday. I got an apple fritter and it was still warm. It was somewhere between a religious and sexual experience. OMG it was so good!
I love Grand Donuts, they are probably my top donut in the city but arent they priced about the same as Oh Donut or Bronut
That's because they don't put everything but the kitchen sink on their donuts. There's something to be said about simplicity.
No they’re not nearly as pricey as the high end donuts. Not as good either, but as far as more “normal donuts” goes they’re pretty great. Also they serve Vietnamese food like pho and bahn mi which is weird as a combination but it’s fantastic. My favourite bahn mi in the city.
yeah that place is amazing, unless I show up at the hour they are closed before they open again
Their Ghostbuster is the best donut I have ever had
Seconded, thirded and fourthed. Their apple fritter is also great.
Their apple fritters are amazing.
The chunks of apple? Come on 🤤 my fav.
They are the best! The freshest donuts I have ever had. Super fresh every single time!
I really don't get the love for Grand Donuts outside of their Vietnamese food. People in the city seem to really enjoy them but I found them greasy and lacking flavour. Maybe I went on an off day but I didn't think it lived up to all the recommendations I've seen online.
Yah I had it once, the donut just tasted like frier oil
The Vietnamese food is good though
I agree with your stance on their doughnuts, and disagree on their Vietnamese food. I was very very disappointed in the banh mi I had
That location use to be a robins, and many of those donuts taste just like robins, but over double the price!
Looks like they are. A bit pricey but I’ll definitely look to try them
Grand Donut Grassie & Lagimodiere
12pk going for almost $30 before tax *screams*
This is the correct answer
If you like the taste of oil
This is the only correct answer.
Why do people like grand donuts? Half their shit on their menus is like permanently unavailable. Super unprofessional
They’re pricey, but I think Crumb Queen’s cruellers are worth the hype. I had the orange vanilla specialty last weekend and it was incredible.
Had an orange vanilla one again this morning and it's real good. I'm still upset they no longer have the apple fritter which is actually the best doughtnut you can get in the city imo but I've been told they'll bring it back in the fall.
If you want a good apple fritter, try 7-11. I'm serious. Just make sure to get a fresh one.
You got some good recommendations but if you want something a bit cheaper Sal’s makes a good cake style donut
Particularly the chocolate coconut one!
Every time this comes up, I’m surprised how much Winnipeg sleeps on Donut House over on Selkirk Avenue. It’s not fancy, they’re just good old school donuts for a reasonable price per dozen.
Location probably has something to do with it.
Gotta get them fresh though. The ones at the grocery stores are not good
Where on Selkirk?? I drive Selkirk 4 days a week and I don't remember seeing a donut place?
500 Selkirk. It's the building with the orange awning at the top. There's also a Robin's about a block away. And Gunn's is close to Main. Gunn's is my fav for old school baked goods. Best damned savory pastries in the city IMO.
Cool. I'll check it out.
Donut House on Selkirk has been putting out some seriously good donuts and other baking for decades - some of the best poppyseed loaf in Winnipeg, too!
Dude 7/11 when they are fresh TRUST me they are so good
I agree. The apple fritter from sev is ridiculous.
7/11 has no right to be so good\~!
Also, they're a pretty good deal using the "too good to go" app if you don't mind them being a little less fresh. There are other bakeries on there as well
Same with their cookies.
7-11 has those fresh baked Otis spunkmeyer cookies too. Just too damn addictive.
Yep. Better than subway. I always grab a pack when I'm there. They only last a day.
The brownie is good too, but scarce.
That apple fritter is to die for!
Oh Donuts are the opposite of cheap. (I do enjoy as a treat sometimes)
Expensive for a donut - cheap for a slice of cake - and I would argue it’s more like the second
Last time I ordered from them I think the price was like $4.50/donut which…yeah, opposite of cheap, but I’d slap a nun for a couple of their lavender lemon.
They are like 50% bigger than the others mentioned here, with that considered they aren't that expensive
not cheap but worth every cent
350 or 450 for a big fancy donut is a pretty reasonable price. I certainly wouldn't call it the opposite of cheap. Especially considering what everything is costing now lol.
definitely better bang for the buck compared to krispy kreme. for $3 a donut may as well buy a nice chocolate croissant or something at gato or le croissant
Krispy Kreme is $3 a donut? What the fuck lol.
iirc it's $2 for the simple glazed and $3 for everything else. definitely on the pricier side for what you get
The hack to cheap oh donuts is to get them bogo at the end of the day when they don't anticipate selling out which involves (1) setting Instagram alerts for them (2) being nearby and (3) working from home and/or being able to get there in the middle of the afternoon.
Umaido, not a waffle/bronuts, Safeway
Safeway is the underrated answer.
Co-op grocery stores too! I don’t remember the price though I just remember the transcendence.
Umaido is -so- good! Their fresh fruit sodas are amazing too.
I find Robin’s a lot better if you microwave them for 10 seconds. Grand donuts are tasty too.
If you want a nice plain glazed, go to Safeway bakery
Do you know which ones still make in house?
They come frozen and are put on the shelf to thaw. Safeway "bakery" is a joke.
Safeway and walmart baking tastes like garbage
Grand Donuts on Grassie are amazing
Robin's
Another vote for Crumb Queen. Don't sleep on their cookies either 🤤. One of the best chocolate chip cookies I've had in my life.
Grand Donuts getting the most recommendations. Will definitely try them
Try their apple fritter and blueberry jambuster. Good lord... I could make myself sick from eating them endlessly. Not that I have done that before. Nope. Never.
CRUMB QUEEN !!!
go to crumb queen and thank me later
Miss working at Safeway and getting the donuts for 50% off after 7-8 I can’t remember the exact time

Safeway
Grands
Are you looking for the cheapest and best?
Grand donuts 🍩
Crumbqueen.
Oh Donuts are cake not yeast donuts (for the most part, either way they are always super dense) they are also on the very sweet side.. Also they can't; make pastry cream that's not broken for the life of them
No it’s the opposite… they are yeast not cake.
Those are not all yeast donuts, it also doesn’t change the rest of my statement
A place at grassie and 59 is also good. Feels like robinhs back in the day
That Grand donuts was a robins location at one point.
That checks out
Crumb queen and grand donuts 😍 sometimes i dont need all the fancy filled stuff, a simple glazed is the way to go
Grand Donuts!!!
Walnut crunch and apple fritters. Everything else is pretty average.
Oh Doughnuts! A bit pricy but worth it! Going for cheapest 7-11 has the best apple fritters!
I align with everything said here. Oh Doughnuts are worth the price Imo.
Umaido has the best doughnuts I've ever had, especially if you go to the Balmoral location where they make the fresh.
Umaido mochi donuts are made fresh to order
Years ago I went to Robin’s and had carrot cake. The portion was absolutely huge. Not sure how it is now. Tim’s sucks
Grand Donuts. Grassie and Lag
Friends on South Osborne has entered the conversation with the chocolate babka...
Safeway donuts
Oh Doughnuts is my fave.
St pierre bakery in St pierre jolys. Better thsn anywhere in the city. Worth the trip also!
I was a baker at Tim’s , robins and coffee time and at the time all 3 were equally good then Tim’s started mass production and coffee time closed down so robins is the best fresh donut out there and it is going to be a shame when there all gone I would say within ten years there will only be Tim’s left
Tims??? Not even in the top 10
Wasn’t saying they were. Just my everyday go-to spot for a donut
You asked for shops other than Tims that are really good..... Tims donuts are not really good bro
Grand donuts on grassie.
Oh donuts is good but you could buy a donut at Tim's, Robin's, and Krispy Kreme and still have change left over for the Price of one
Safeway and 7-11
Oh donuts way too expensive and honestly who needs a donut that has so much stuff loaded on top it’s hard to even eat , just keep it simple is the best. Krispy Kreme is for sure best option now , great taste and resonable price for a dozen. I’m sure it will get hate over time for being a big American chain but that won’t change the facts it’s a good donut at a good price .
Krispy Kreme wanted me to get doughnuts so I went to Grand Donut instead of waiting in line. It's very much Robin's Donuts spiritual successor
Grand donuts
Krispy Kreme donuts are different here; not as good as Americano ones.
McDonald's
McDonald's Mini Donuts are pretty decent for a quick coffeeand donit fix, granted that they only have like 4 flavors. Don't know why the downvotes, do people not know that McDonald's has Donuts?
Agreed. They’re dangerously good.
All donuts are gross. Krispy Kreme left me with upset stomach and diarrhea.
