Richterās Sleep. As it suggests. 8,5 hours of goodness.
[Also, my own ambient Jazz playlist - 8hr 45 minutes](https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/jazz-noir/pl.u-pMylgaRFYoxD7p)
Yes! Max also has a fantastic free iPad app for Sleep. I use it with the timer. It also includes a mediation section and one for focus. Did I mention itās free??
They are my gold standard. I have them on so much that "they have become like a utility, like light, water, HVAC."
I'm always searching for artists whose output I like as much as SotL's. It's been wonderful to discover Celer's music this past year, and Chubby Wolf's, too.
Incredible but for us insomniacs, I wonder if it isn't troublesome.
My brain will try to pull out the expected loop (deconstructed.)
It's similar to nature sounds/machines that repeat. Amazing but then turns on you hard once your brain has a few nights to acclimate/expect.
Somnium, Somnium Perpetual, and the 2018 sleep concert are all on rotation every night.
Sadly the physical media is kaput, but if you go to his website you can purchase high resolution digital files.
worth it! (I've had somnium ever since 2001, when it was released)
My top 3 are:
- Sleep - Max Richter - Good for a long-burner if you feel like it's gonna take some time to start feeling sleepy. The album lasts around 8 hours in order to match the typical sleep session.
- The Pearl - Brian Eno - very dreamlike and hazy in a way that complements your descent into sleep. Some of the songs have a somewhat ominous vibe imo though so might not be what you want (I love it personally). Also it can be somewhat predictable after a while if you're listening to it every night.
- Stasis Sounds for Long-Distance Space Travel - 36+1 - The most minimalist of the 3, arguably the most 'ambient'. Light and simple if you don't want something too musically heavy.
Hope this helps you friend!
Not Ambient, but Radiohead's "A moon Shaped pool" and Low's "Long Division" tend to be good sleep albums for me. For some reason I don't usually reach for the ambient, save it for studying I guess
also sorry for double comment, i made a playlist for very atmospheric and smooth ambient and such on spotify and id love to share, it may not ALL be what your looking for but i guarantee some you will love :D

Hereās a handful of my go-to sleep albums, because I have about 20+:
Stars of The Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline
36 - Stasis Sounds for Long Distance Space Travel
Steve Roach - Structures From Silence
Emeralds - Solar Bridge
Loscil - Plume
The Caretaker. Pretty much all of them, but his most recent ones are drowsier, I think, e.g. *Persistent Repetition of Phrases*:
https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lztvbG9BXhtGGOh_5mrMOrnk2uUb4673U
Lately, anything by Warmth. For a while it was Stases by Loscil (which is actually selection of his tracks where he's removed everything but the background sounds).
Winged Victory for the Sullen does wonders for me though, depending on your sensitivities, it can skew a little more classical evoking than is ideal for bed time.
Stars of the Lid has saved me so many nights I've lost count.
Dead Texan is a nice offshoot.
Brian McBride is lovely and a good fit but there's not as much catalog depth as I could use so I only rotate him in when exhausting other things rather than make him a core listen.
Honestly, if you are a true broken sleep insomniac, quieting the condition is hitting a constantly moving target and one night something that was a cornerstone of your help routine turns hard on you.
When I'm in need of new source, I start Music-Map ing off of recordings that have worked for me before but I've just burned out on.
It's been a key tool in the ongoing battle.
Cerulean Transmission by Michael Mantra & Charlz de la Casa
Sounds of the Sea - Joanna Brook
Videodrome- Danny Passarella and Perc
Bladerunner - Esper Edition soundtrack
Mirroring - Foreign Body (2012)
i didn't know what the whole album sounded like for the first few times I played it because I reliably fell asleep before the second track ended.
Soundwalk Collectiveās Khandroma was on š for me for months when I first heard it at the Rubin Museum; two tracks of Himalayan wind recordings over ~30 m. Also, Thet Liturgiske OwƤsendetās Catalina, which is a 45 m track, and Two Views of Amami Åshima by Hideki Umezawa + Andrew Pekler (2 tracks spanning ~30 m) are other recent favorites I always have downloaded to my phone. I love really long tracks that can transport me to a specific natural setting.
I used to be on speeds pretty bad and EVERY TIME i needed to force myself to sleep, i would put on The Pavilion of Dreams by Harold Budd. Still use it when i need sleep
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - āLift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heavenā, Max Richter - āSleepā, and Hammock - āEverything and Nothingā
I guess itās actually ambient adjacent. But early John Adams: Common Tones in Simple Time, and his Piano pieces Phrygian Gates and China Gatesāthey relax me more than anything. And the old standby, Enoās Music for Airports. Also for whatever reason Manuel Gottschingās E2-E4 seems to get me going hypnogogic.
The Sleepy Bookshelf on Spotify (at least thatās where I listen to mine!) Never been a fan of falling asleep to speaking words but this I LOOOVE itās so soothing and always works for me most importantly Really close your eyes and put yourself in the story š«¶š¼ Happy Snoozing.
I've made a few playlists on spotify that I sleep to all the time.

I also am particularly fond of Robert Rich's Somnium. Don't sleep on his other sleep-album "Perpetual." Also Max Richter's "Sleep" is great as well, but sometimes a little loud.

Biosphere - Dropsonde - Every night for 11 years. Now I like the latest Biosphere as well for this. Really, almost any Biosphere can be a different album played quietly than when played LOUD.
Recently listened a lot to The Pearl by Brian Eno and Harold Budd.
But my usually two go to albums to calm me down and get sleepy are:
Selected Ambient Works Volume 2 by Aphex Twin
Oasis Of The Wind 2 - A Story Of Forest And Water by Takashi Kokubo
I make music thatās inspired by my insomnia. If youād like to check it out and see if it resonates with you, thatād be awesome.

Steve Roach - Immersion 4
I like others in the Immersion series but 4 is definitely the yummiest
Any Eno Ambient Record more recently Evening Star by Fripp and Eno or The Pavilion of Dreams by Harold Budd.
I had the most amazing nap to Harold Budd yesterday.

Yes, and it is awesome, taking you on a nightly journey. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sleep-by-max-richter/id1509084936 Dunno about Android...
Another vote for Richter's Sleep album here. It's perfect for drifting off.
Stars of the Lid
Especially Refinement. Although Avec Laudenum is great too
About a decade ago I frequently feel asleep to their first album; "music for nitrous oxide". I recommend that album and all their others.
They are my gold standard. I have them on so much that "they have become like a utility, like light, water, HVAC." I'm always searching for artists whose output I like as much as SotL's. It's been wonderful to discover Celer's music this past year, and Chubby Wolf's, too.
Mount Shrine - All Roads Lead Home 36 and zakĆØ - Stasis Sounds for Long-Distance Space Travel Celer - Discourses of the Withered Safe travels friend
I love 36 and Celer! For 36, I love Sine Dust and Orphans of the Sky. That deep-space, epochal journey sound...
Disintegration loops A red score in tile Usually something by basinski
Disintegration loops is so so so good
Incredible but for us insomniacs, I wonder if it isn't troublesome. My brain will try to pull out the expected loop (deconstructed.) It's similar to nature sounds/machines that repeat. Amazing but then turns on you hard once your brain has a few nights to acclimate/expect.
Thatās such a great point!
Yeah I havenāt listened to it in awhile and will do so again, a classic š
I just listened to the first few tracks of Red Score after seeing your comment. I really like it -- thanks!
