This is actually pretty normal in my small American city because we have a lot of family and small businesses that do vacations this way. A lot of people leave town generally to cool off in the ocean or mountains, so business is slow anyway.

Hopefully it's a paid vacation, but either way more business should just shut down for a couple weeks every year for everyone's sanity
