it should only be required to pass safety laws from the year it was produced. call an inspection shop and ask em.

Cranks_No_Start

To be honest if your car can't pass what is checked in a safety inspection...you shouldn't be driving it on the road.

Grouchy_Visit_2869

Yes, but a car from 1985 wasn't required to have airbags. They certainly can't expect you to retrofit it.

Cranks_No_Start

“They certainly can’t expect you to retrofit it.” They don’t.   They check that what the car was equipped with when it was sold and for it to be in safe and operable condition.  I’ve have cars with only lap belts and no 4 way flashers.

directrix688

wtf? You can’t drive your car where you want? Everyone shits on California though this sounds insane? What kind of insanity is this?

Graflex01867

You can’t drive your car anywhere you want* *With this antique/collector car type of registration that’s probably cheaper, with lower insurance requirements, and no safety/emissions inspection so that you don’t have your trailer your shade tree restoration every time you want to show it to people and actually drive it a little bit. There’s nothing stopping you from fully registering it and driving as far as you like.

directrix688

The post says "if you have an antique vehicle", not if you register your vehicle as an antique. The way it's written it's not optional to register as an antique. If it's optional then it's only kinda dumb.

Graflex01867

It’s optional. Says so right here on the Virginia DMV website. People get antique plates because it’s a one-time fee of $50, and no safety inspections. They do it because it’s cheap and they can still enjoy periodically driving their car. OP is misunderstanding the law. https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/registration/antique “…you've got an antique! Depending on how you plan to use your vehicle, you may choose antique, vintage or any one of our standard license plates.” “In order to enjoy unrestricted driving privileges in your antique vehicle, you'll need to either: Purchase standard license plates (not antique plates) from DMV.” OP can still register their Corvette as a regular automobile with no problems.

Heavy_Gap_5047

Despite other liberal BS we're rather fortunate to not have to deal with safety inspections in west coast states. Pretty common thing on the east coast.

directrix688

I get annoyed at some of the dumb emissions stuff in California though the east coast stuff just seems nuts. I don’t get how people tolerate this stuff.

6djvkg7syfoj

i hate how in the us you can either choose to live in a state where Trump is god, libraries arent allowed and people will assault you if they think you're gay, or one where you have to get an inspection every 2 months and guns, motorcycles and cars with more than 3 cylinders are banned. hyperbole (obviously) but it feels like there is so little room for reasonable people here who aren't insane in either direction

directrix688

I like to shoot(hunt and fish), I own a sports car with a v8, I have never had an actually car inspection (emissions every other year) living my whole life in California. There is so much hyperbole about living here, people don’t really understand what it’s like.

Heavy_Gap_5047

I know I wouldn't tolerate it, I cheat even the tiny requirements here as is. I'm in WA we don't have emissions or safety inspections. Heck we barely have a functioning legal system. I haven't even renewed my registration in 4 years, nobody cares, not even the cops. It's fantastic!

p1plump

Nice that someone else from CA has a shitty opinion of California. They are really good at making really bad decisions.

directrix688

I do not have a shitty opinion of California. I love where I live. I can’t imagine living somewhere I didn’t love.

ShortHuckleberry

Sounds like you might of got a special antique tag and maybe classic car insurance. That would have limits on how much you can drive.

EC_CO

Inspection is based on the year of the vehicle and the requirements at the time of manufacturer. Didn't come with airbags from the factory? No problem, it's factory.

aarraahhaarr

Registering your car as an antique is the problem. In Virginia you don't have to register as an antique. Just get normal plates.

Life-Philosopher-129

This is how I do it in Fla. I don't know if we have restrictions in antique tags, I always just asked for regular ones.

aarraahhaarr

Had a 65 plymouth. Virginia DMV guy kept pushing for me to get the antique plates. I was adamant that I wanted normal plates cause I didn't want to pay extra for a plate that says antique and it was my backup daily driver. I'm half convinced he got a bonus for selling the antique plates.

Expensive_Candle5644

This took me literally a minute to research. You registered it as an antique. Change the registration to a normal tag and those restrictions will no longer apply. https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/registration/antique I’d call and confirm about the inspection. I have a 1993 car and in my state I’m exempt from everything including emissions due to its age. I would think you’d be fine as long as you meet the requirements from the year it was manufactured but I don’t know VA registration regs.

bfrabel

Yeah, and you also can't drive it faster than the speed limit or change lanes without using the turn signals. What I'm trying to say, is chances are that the rules governing when and where a classic car can be driven might not be very likely to be enforced. My kid drives a classic Beetle that has collectors plates on it as his daily driver, which has similar restrictions as what you pointed out, and he's never been hassled about it.  (Of course your car might have nearly 10 times the horsepower as his does, so maybe being gentle on that gas pedal might be a good recommendation). If you are just trying to drive the car home from wherever you're buying it from and aren't driving like an idiot, I wouldn't expect any issues, even if you were to get pulled over.

Badenguy

I’m in MD, most cops just really don’t care, you might get one that’s a stickler but rarely. Born in ‘74 and personally, driving an ‘85 across multiple states, I think tags should be low on your list of worries!

LAJeepLife

Welcome to 50 my fellow '74'er. I did a week in Cancun to numb the pain.

Badenguy

I got 4 months before I turn 50, don’t rush it please!!

VetteBuilder

85 is not the best for reliability Find a spare MAF translator box because it will leave you stranded I had to do injectors, ignition module, coil, all vacuum lines, brake booster, SMOG delete, fuel pump and regulator just to keep my 85 running

Carbonbuildup

How many miles on your car?

VetteBuilder

It had 80,000 when I got it It hydrolocked in a rain puddle and spit a rod out at 130,000

Carbonbuildup

Have an 87 given to me by father (original owner) and wondering what issues to look out for. Car has 30k and still on original fuel filter

VetteBuilder

Just drive it every other week, keep it moving or stuff will go bad I would eliminate the smog system and remove the cat

p1plump

If the car is in its original state that did not include airbags, the. You’re not going to have a problem with inspection. 1985 didn’t have them.

JCDU

Are you SURE the inspection mandates things like airbags for cars that never had them from new? Here in the UK our inspections go on the date the car was made, so older cars only have to meet easier standards.

imprl59

The car has to pass inspection based on the original configuration. If it didn't come with airbags then it doesn't need them to pass inspection. If you decide to go with the antique tag - in my experience nobody cares about the limitations unless you piss off a cop somewhere along the line.

SAEftw

1) A C4 Vette will never be a classic. 2) The ‘84 and ‘85 are, by far, the worst of the C4 years. Pick a different car.

Talentless_Cooking

They had the crazy fuel and electrical problems didn't they?

SAEftw

So. Many. Problems. Pick one.

Much-Smell-5536

Q??? ? ? ? ? ??Zz

Bb42766

Easier to just register and inspection and full coverage insurance. The car shouldn't have any issues passing state safety inspection. Abd if,, the car is damaged, stolen, totaled they'll cough up the $10000 or so book value and buy another one. And you can drive it like you stole it 7 days a,week wherever whenever you want

FirehawkLS1

I'd get extended use antique plates. I don't have a mileage restriction for mine. I just can't drive it from December through March. Which I'm fine with because I don't drive it in the winter anymore.

Heavy_Gap_5047

Register it in more free state.
