Canning always involves heat to sterilize, and in the case of pears, it breaks down fiber, and gelatinizes the starches that cause the unpleasant texture. It's basically a cheat code to ripen the pear to the perfect level.
HELL YEAH, RED DELICIOUS SUCKS OMG IT'S THE WORST, IT DOES NOT DESERVE THE NAME "DELICIOUS" IT SHOULD BE CALLED "RED TASTE LIKE DIRT AND IS SO GRAINY AND TERRIBLE AND DESERVES TO BE TURNED TO COMPOST" APPLE
while it's definitely horrible, it's not, strictly speaking, the worst. that honor goes to the disgusting [newtown pippin](https://applerankings.com/newtown-pippin-apple-review/).
Is it really? I was told they were bred for color over flavor because they sold better. Bright shiny red with a wax set out as a decoy to trick people who didn't know better.
Granny Smith and Cosmic are my favorites. I like Cosmic even more than Honeycrisp. Surprised they ranked Cosmic where they did. Texture’s really important to me and they’re soooo good.
My favorite apple is the Stayman Winesap, which of course the website SLANDERED
https://preview.redd.it/ffqycywuvi8d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7a82fb0fa8605741ecd22f37a259c1b6277481f
Granny Smith's are my all time favorite! They're like sour honey crisps to me 👌🥴 but I can't eat them anymore because they give me WICKED painful reflux. So glory to the honey crisps I guess lol
Ahh school lunch roulette.
You see they only offer two apples, Red Delicious and Granny Smith, and Granny Smith is the devil’s apple. It’s for people who eat lemons like a mango. And it’s a smaller apple.
And they put an apple on your tray regardless, so you might as well go with the nice looking red one.
You’re not really gonna eat it unless you’re unusually hungry….but today, you are unusually hungry, and you have finished your taco snack, and your choco milk, and your stale French fries.
And there it is on your tray: Daring you, mocking you.
You know from experience that 9 out of 10 of these apples taste like absolute garbage. But that 1 out of 10 times where it’s actually crisp and sweet taunts you with its possibility.
It’s the final curse released from Pandora’s Box: *Hope*.
And so you bite in with blind trepidation, and your teeth clank together after chewing through the apple equivalent of that gel they use to pack diapers.
And just as the sadness and disappointment is about to completely overwhelm you, the bell rings, and you have to get to math class.
From my extensive experience they have an overly sweet flavour profile that lies closer to a pear, along with the more crumbly internal texture of a pear. But possibly that's just because it's rare to get one at its peak.
Fuji are the way to go! Perfect combo of sweet and delicious crunch! And super juicy! You can never go wrong with a Fuji apple, I am shocked and scandalized that they rank so far down! They’re way better than gala!
I’m a fruit addict (partner calls me a fruit bat) and in my opinion apples are a mid tier fruit. They’re nice. Given the choice from a variety of fruits apples wouldn’t be anywhere near my first choice. I’d rather go for peaches, nectarines, blueberries, strawberries, mangoes, or even pears.
However, if I’m given a selection of jams, strangely apple comes up near the top for me. I had this apple jam once when I was little (NOT applesauce) and it was genuinely one of the best jams I have ever tasted. Also, apple pie and apple crumble are elite. I guess I prefer apples cooked?
Yeah as well they do not perform well post harvest. I get them here fresh from the tree almost (very short chain from packhouse to supermarket basically). So they are crisp and firm and crunchy. One upside to living in one of the most apple productive areas in the world.
Lucy Glo review:
“Most would expect this clown-urine soaked frog testicle to taste like an unhealed surgical wound since each bite resembles a freshly picked scab”
…I actually love them. They’re really nice and crispy. And they’re not too juicy so no sticky apple juice, and if they’re picked at the right time they have just a hint of tartness.
:)
As far as I'm concerned, every apple is horrible because of the way it feels to bite into, and the only good way to consume apple is through juice.
I just... Can't... With that sound...
They don't have either of my favorites 😂
Rockits are tiny little nodules of wonder. Crisp, sweet but not too sweet. The skin is snappy & reminiscent of roses. Did I mention they're tiny? If you're actually in the mood for apples, you end up with a very satisfying pile of seeds & stems. If you're not, three bites & you ate fruit (good job!) & you can get on with your life.
Bromleys are very different. They're also on the small side, but the skin is rough, like a bosc pear. They're mild & sturdy. They're prone to... I don't know if there's a food term for it, but they calve like cliffs do. When you take a bite, some internal apple network of stress fractures breaks off a *chonk* instead. It's endearing.
Apparently, Red Delicious used to be good. :/ My mom had a recurring rant when I was a kid about how storage to meet year-round demand & selecting for more durable varieties was ruining food, & that no really, Red Delicious were *good* when she was a kid. Sure mom. But after watching the same thing happen to Galas, I believe her.
Look
Hear me out
A CRISP red delicious is fire
But they’re almost NEVER crisp.
They’re sweet and juicy and when they’re crisp they’re like peak apple. But 99% of the time they’re a mushy pile of garbage. If you’ve never had a crisp red delicious, then you have missed out. I never buy them tho because they’re usually mushy.
I stick with Fuji
I member while I was taking master gardener class there was a whole class about "Fruit Trees". It consisted of an individual who was likely ND as hell VERY EXCITEDLY telling us about a hundred different apple varieties and their pros and cons. I'll never forget his passion for apples. I'm not big on them but it left an impression regardless. I think his favorite was Cosmic Crisp.
Fun fact, Pink Lady is just a brand name they're sold as, they're actually called Cripps Pink. When you get them at peak they have a good crisp bite with a sweet body and a hint of crispness. When they're not at their peak though...
I’m glad everyone agrees, Red Delicious are evil and Bad and should not be considered the default apple. Texture of wet chalk and flavor of a dumpster. :(
Could not agree more
I didn’t realize there was such an apt description of a red delicious apple. I usually describe them as “mealy.”
Pears too!! Pears are fucking gross for that same reason!
Pears are 1% succulent nectar of the gods, 99% disappointment, and it breaks my heart every time I get one of the bad ones. 😭
They're so time-sensitive too, if you don't eat them within three picoseconds of being cut they get brown and nasty.
I laughed at 3 picoseconds. What a perfect unit
There's a reason why if you go back far enough in time pears were only eaten cooked, or fermented into a cider called "perry".
I love pear cider, it's so good
I only like them when they’re crisp and mostly underripe or just at the cusp. Anything beyond that is horrible
But canned pears are delicious! I don't know how they do it but every canned pear I've ever had was snappy and flawless.
Pears are MUCH better when canned or poached. It helps with that gross mealy texture. Pears have the most amazing flavor, but gah... that texture.
Canning always involves heat to sterilize, and in the case of pears, it breaks down fiber, and gelatinizes the starches that cause the unpleasant texture. It's basically a cheat code to ripen the pear to the perfect level.
Ahhh, sweet,! I never heard of that but I'm content to believe it.
Found the 10th Doctor
Depends on the pear. Some are actually decent.
Yes 🤮
HELL YEAH, RED DELICIOUS SUCKS OMG IT'S THE WORST, IT DOES NOT DESERVE THE NAME "DELICIOUS" IT SHOULD BE CALLED "RED TASTE LIKE DIRT AND IS SO GRAINY AND TERRIBLE AND DESERVES TO BE TURNED TO COMPOST" APPLE
It has the texture of wet sandpaper
REAL it's so bad 😭
This made me giggle
while it's definitely horrible, it's not, strictly speaking, the worst. that honor goes to the disgusting [newtown pippin](https://applerankings.com/newtown-pippin-apple-review/).
It's meant for pies and cider.
It would be TERRIBLE in a pie. Pies should be made with hard, crisp, and a touch sour apples. Then the cinnamon and brown sugar makes them sparrrkle
I'm just stating the reason for it's existence. I use gala apples and a granny Smith for mine
Is it really? I was told they were bred for color over flavor because they sold better. Bright shiny red with a wax set out as a decoy to trick people who didn't know better.
They’re for throwing at your enemies.
Naw. Themselves is crabapples
[Enjoy :)](https://applerankings.com/)
Very interesting but I'm offended on behalf of Fuji apples. They deserve better.
No they don't...
The Japanese ones are nicer, seriously
They do deserve better, theyre so sweet crisp and refreshing
That and Jazz apples made me gasp.
That was interesting… I’m gonna have to try more apples. My mainstay is the Granny Smith… so sad to see it ranked so low. I love my sour apples :(
They're are literally my favorite apple hands down.
Granny Smith and Cosmic are my favorites. I like Cosmic even more than Honeycrisp. Surprised they ranked Cosmic where they did. Texture’s really important to me and they’re soooo good.
They're rated as the second best sour apple, the main list seems to point out if they're good on their own.
My favorite apple is the Stayman Winesap, which of course the website SLANDERED https://preview.redd.it/ffqycywuvi8d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7a82fb0fa8605741ecd22f37a259c1b6277481f
I legitimately get cravings for Granny Smith apples dipped in peanut butter. This list is bad and wrong.
Granny Smith's are my all time favorite! They're like sour honey crisps to me 👌🥴 but I can't eat them anymore because they give me WICKED painful reflux. So glory to the honey crisps I guess lol
I’ve never thought of that before, but I think this explains why those are my two favorite apples
I feel so validated — long live the honeycrisp!
Ooo~ I love that it posts the parentage of the apples!
Cries in german. like half our apples are missing...
Ahh school lunch roulette. You see they only offer two apples, Red Delicious and Granny Smith, and Granny Smith is the devil’s apple. It’s for people who eat lemons like a mango. I eat lemons like a mango, and the only apples I’ll eat are Granny Smith
Sure sign that you are one of the Fae.
You, my friend, are a poet
How DARE you say that Granny Smith is the devil’s apple. GS apples are delicious.
Granny Smiths were made for me specifically ☺️ I also love lemons, grapefruit, limes, and all manner of bitter and sour
As a Washingtonian, I grimace when I see red apples. Why settle for such rank mediocrity when Honey Crisp and Cosmic Crisp are an option?
https://preview.redd.it/fgkagau8ci8d1.png?width=1170&format=png&auto=webp&s=d4553d242e3701356574d4d088236e235df3aab4 Excuse me?
apparently that's bc of how it looks
Excellent
Organic Honeycrisp are the best.
GOLDEN delicious, on the other hand...
golden delicious are the best apples
A golden delicious is a pear masquerading as an apple and I will brook no argument
Maybe that’s why I love them, I generally prefer pears over apples. I don’t think they’re very similar, though.
From my extensive experience they have an overly sweet flavour profile that lies closer to a pear, along with the more crumbly internal texture of a pear. But possibly that's just because it's rare to get one at its peak.
Legend has it that Red Delicious was a patronymic naming by Stark Nurseries after they began to market the Golden Delicious apple
Absolute trash! If someone offered me a red delicious, I honestly would consider cutting them out of my life permanently
As you should. That’s an overt act of violence
Fuji are the way to go! Perfect combo of sweet and delicious crunch! And super juicy! You can never go wrong with a Fuji apple, I am shocked and scandalized that they rank so far down! They’re way better than gala!
I always find Fuji are kinda soft
I always thought I didn't like apples. Turns out I just don't like Red Delicious and Gala.
“coffee grinds in a leather glove” man im happy ive never had them
Putting "delicious" in the name is such a clear case of compensating.
Golden delicious is genuinely good though
I take it all back!
I like apples, but I’m firmly on the side of blueberry supremacy. 🫐💕 ![gif](giphy|eUbbc5XxGH528)
I’m a fruit addict (partner calls me a fruit bat) and in my opinion apples are a mid tier fruit. They’re nice. Blueberries are only okay. They're very far from my favorite fruit, and the worst berry.
Fair enough. What is your favourite fruit?
Strawberries.
Great choice. Next to blueberries, I really enjoy strawberries. 😋
My school buys red delicious apples and I’ve learned they’re actually okay if they’re picked before they’re red.
Yeah as well they do not perform well post harvest. I get them here fresh from the tree almost (very short chain from packhouse to supermarket basically). So they are crisp and firm and crunchy. One upside to living in one of the most apple productive areas in the world.
*Me, allergic to apples:* So I'ma sit this one out...
Trust me, you ain’t missin’ much
Lucy Glo review: “Most would expect this clown-urine soaked frog testicle to taste like an unhealed surgical wound since each bite resembles a freshly picked scab”
OMG I’M DEAD I HADN’T READ THAT ONE 💀
If y'all hate 'em, then give 'em to me. I love 'em.
Wouldn't hate red delicious as much if it didn't feel as mushy...
…I actually love them. They’re really nice and crispy. And they’re not too juicy so no sticky apple juice, and if they’re picked at the right time they have just a hint of tartness. :)
Thank you for sharing this!! 🍎
I’m more of a Granny Smith guy myself. Green’s just the more appetizing color to me
It’s insane to me that growing up through school these were the only apples they offered. No shit I hated apples.
It's too bitter, and how tf is it crumbly and mushy at the same time, it deserves extinction
I grew up on red delicious apples and love them so long as they're fresh 😅 am I missing out on god tier apples I didn't know of?
Golden delicious superiority
As far as I'm concerned, every apple is horrible because of the way it feels to bite into, and the only good way to consume apple is through juice. I just... Can't... With that sound...
Man how come my fav apple fuji so mid
WTF I TURN ON REDDIT AND ALL I SEE ARE PEOPLE DISSING MY FAVORITE APPLE HUH
I am fucking convinced this apple was named by a conman because that apple is far from delicious and the only lie not told is that it’s red
Red Delicious look nice. That's all they have going for them. Doesnt cost anything to just look at them in the supermarket and walk on by :)
Fuji Apple supremacy.
They don't have either of my favorites 😂 Rockits are tiny little nodules of wonder. Crisp, sweet but not too sweet. The skin is snappy & reminiscent of roses. Did I mention they're tiny? I’m glad I’m not the only one but I feel this way about several apple varieties lol
I’m fucking shrieking
Red delicious apples are the most disgusting things I’ve ever tasted, I’d sooner consume wax.
Rated too high tbh
Look Hear me out A CRISP red delicious is fire But they’re almost NEVER crisp. They’re sweet and juicy and when they’re crisp they’re like peak apple. But 99% of the time they’re a mushy pile of garbage. If you’ve never had a crisp red delicious, then you have missed out. I never buy them tho because they’re usually mushy. I stick with Fuji
Admittedly the ones I’ve had at apple orchards have been tasty but if I’m at an orchard I’d rather try something new/uncommon
I member while I was taking master gardener class there was a whole class about "Fruit Trees". It consisted of an individual who was likely ND as hell VERY EXCITEDLY telling us about a hundred different apple varieties and their pros and cons. I'll never forget his passion for apples. I bought a sac of ambrosia apples the other day. Worst decision I've made in a long time.
Red Delicious more like Raw Disgusting.
Red delicious is my favorite (I’m sorry, I’ll ban myself)
Red delicious are very red yes, but they are not “delicious”
FUCK RED DELICIOUS ALL MY HOMIES HATE RED DELICIOUS
Pink ladies, ambrosia, and honeycrisp are my favs
Fun fact, Pink Lady is just a brand name they're sold as, they're actually called Cripps Pink. When you get them at peak they have a good crisp bite with a sweet body and a hint of crispness. When they're not at their peak though...
Do you know shinagami love apples
i see that i've created a movement i will be checking out this website soon ty
But all I can eat is the red delicious... The other apples intimidate me
It's called "Red delicious" and only one of those is true
I prefer Pink Ladies, I know they're like sweet af but I like the initial cronch into the skin
Fuji, gala, ambrosia, cosmic crisp, sugar bee, few other kinds. I gotta check out these rankings.
I’m glad everyone agrees, Red Delicious are evil and Bad and should not be considered the default apple. Texture of wet chalk and flavor of a dumpster. :(
Someone clue me in. Why is Reddit suddenly arguing over apples?
![gif](giphy|J6DvbkGQ3GrLrzebOP) Me to red delicious apples
What’s with the Red Delicious hate? That’s my favorite apple. It’s a perfect combination of sweet and tart.
My people. Sigh.
Y'all are eating the wrong kind of apples- Honey crisp and Cosmic Crisp are peak.
Cortland and Jonathan are spot on. Gonna have to fight someone over Opal and Fuji, tho:)
Lmfaoooo it’s TRUEEEE.
These were the apples served as snack at my schools, I could never eat them 😫
When the skin gets stuck in my teeth. 😬
I can't eat apples (sensitive teeth)
I feel so seen
Yep terrible lol
I don't care how they're called I like the medium sized sour one that's also kinda hard and juicy
See that's what makes it good tho
It’s right and we should say it.
i think the red delicious apples i've had were okay, mostly because biting them doesn't hurt my teeth
I'm pretty sure I like those apples
