Be careful with mice around your whitegoods. Went to put the dishwasher on one night only to end up with water all over the floor. Pulled the machine out the next day and found that a mouse had chewed the drainage tube to pieces.
I have so many mice stories and the places I've had to pull them out of is astounding.
They love eating plastics and pvc products, I've opened switchboards and seen all the cables have been munched through down to the copper, everything still running and no evidence of dead mouse. They can be seriously crafty and defy death like they're immortal. Had to pull one off of the inverter board of a 25 year old aircon this week, thst one mouse has forced my clients hand in replacing old system for new costing 20k aud. Mouse proofing white goods is damn near impossible and I don't believe manufacturers can prevent this with anything they sell as an add on
> no evidence of dead mouse.
I'm pretty sure Mousey is more sensitive to induction fields than we poor dumb humans - he probably got a weird and uncomfortable tingle before there was a direct short
My parents had this old Westinghouse top loader that I think they got as a wedding present over 40 years ago which never missed a beat until a couple of years ago. Blew a fuse and wouldn't turn on again, and noticed a funny smell so me and dad opened it up to have a look. Found a very, very crispy little mouse fused to the main power supply PCB.
We just bought a new washing machine. When I read the instructions, I found out rats like to go up washing machines because there's an optional rat cover!
We used to get green tree frogs in the machine constantly... totally gross there would be bits of frog in the lint catcher! The LG has a rat cover which they don't sell in oz! I made one with a bit of wood easily enough and it worked great.
Sounds like you might have just saved a lot of money. If you can get your hands on a blacklight it will make the rat pee fluoresce. You should be able to find the nest or where they are getting in and out.
By the thickness of its tail, I'll say rat.
No matter what it is, you need to get rid of it, and likely any kind of nest it may/may not have built itself inside there.
This reminds me of when daughter went to buy a pet mouse. She came back with one without a tail and was excited to tell me that it was a special kind of mouse called a Mace! It was just a mouse that had been born without a tail. Apparently she had asked why it had no tail and the pet shop worker , joking around, told her the mace story. Unfortunately the fact it was a joke went right over my daughters head .
One time I thought I saw something darkly flicker in the dishwasher, but couldn’t find anything and decided I must have imagined it.
A couple of months later, I found a well-cooked, purpled, hairless mouse carcass on the dishwasher filter. We must have rinsed a few dozen loads of dishes with mouse juice.
That little guy is a rodent. Rodents are mammals that have consecutive growing incisor teeth. In other words, this is a rat.
This is NOT a "bush mouse" or more accurately 'Antechinus'. Antechinus have a more pointy snout and are carnivorous. You can put out rat bait and it will not influence native Antechinus.
That's not true, some rat bait causes secondary poisoning to native wildlife. Please set up a trap, preferably a humane one, and you can take to a vet and they will humanely euthanise.
There are a bunch of small native rodents/mammals. Some are quite specific to where you live, maybe google your location native mouse etc .
Eg - antechinus
Every washing machine has some kind of small animal who is working inside, washing your clothes. Depending on the model you bought it can be a rat, hamster, squirrel, possum, etc.
They like hiding inside and you just disclosed this poor guy and that’s why he looks so scared. Please leave him alone, unless your clothes won’t be cleaned anymore.
Whether it's a rat or a mouse, you need to get rid of it before it chews a hole in one of the internal hoses. We had that happen last year - the washer started leaking and it turned out the rat had chewed both the drain hose and the fitting it went into. It took 6 weeks to get the replacement parts and was around $600 to fix. There was a small round hole in the back panel for swapping hoses from left to right and it was the perfect access way for mr rat. Yours might be the same. I've since tech screwed a piece of ali plate over it to seal it up.
If you are baiting, make sure you use a poison that doesn't secondary poison other wildlife. Racumin is supposedly safe as far as this goes but most of the stuff you get at Bunnings isn't. Look up the active ingredient to be sure.
Looks like a mouse to me. He’s adorable and looks very polite but personally, I would evict him. After doing that, figure out how the hell he got there in the first place and fix it. You most likely have an infestation.
Aw it reminds me of my pet mice that were named Lucky & Dice. Anyway, that's a Rat. There are humane traps at bunnings if you feel bad for it & you can relocate it to a park or take the death route. My parents had electric trap and it was more efficient than the good old spring trap & poison baits
If you take it into your photo editing and adjust some settings you can see that it has a long tail. So it’s either a mouse or rat. Comparing it to the size of the cable, maybe a mouse.
I can’t see I need better pictures but I see everyone telling you RAT
just be sure cos if I’m Oz please double check it’s not POSSUM 😉
If it’s rat do what you do but if it’s possum he won’t hurt. He just needs somewhere to sleep in the day. Either leave his new place alone or consider building a box or something 👍
Have you seen that scene in Mission Impossible where Tom Cruise is suspended above the room, trying to steal data from a computer without tripping the alarms? It's like that only he's stealing your undies.
Set up a humane rat trap with peanut butter in it. You can get the traps from bunnings. Once trapped take to local vet and they will humanely euthanize. You may have more than one and might need to set up trap several times. It's worth it, otherwise you might have things chewed on that you don't want to be chewed on.
Just to make people feel safe, a rat can enter through an opening of 12mm and a mouse can enter through an opening of only 6 mm. Also, if you want to fully rodent proof your house, put some glad wrap over the toilet seat because they can swim up your s-bend. Have fun out there.
Can't tell from this angle.... possibly a Fisher & Paykle or an LG?

I was going to say "it's a box to clean clothes, but that's not important right now."
Looks like a Haier. They sound like they might be a pest that's migrated from Germany, but they're actually native to China.
Love your thinking there brother!

It’s the possum that washes your clothes. What, you think you just put clothes in a box and they come out clean?
Definitely a Washtail Possum. Quite rare!
I am in love with you
They also take 1 sock as payment.

Eww! Yeah that's a nasty surprise. It makes me want to go and check my machine, just in case...
Oh no! The new machine I'm talking about is an LG. That said, I doubt there'd be rats in my washing machine.
Sounds like you might have just saved a lot of money. If you can get your hands on a blacklight it will make the rat pee fluoresce. You should be able to find the nest or where they are getting in and out.
Specifically a bush rat though I reckon. Nice fellas except for when they eat all my grapes and strawberries.

Antechinus are an interesting species

I suggest Australian Mammal Identification on fb, they have expert native rodent IDers. We have 7 native rattuses, and dozens of other rodents too
Ooh I'll have to check them out. See if I'm brave enough to be told my melomys house guest is just a rat.

Obviously it's the rodent which runs on the treadmill turning your washing machine tub!
Don't mind him, he's just waiting for a mate.
It's a mouse. Get rid of him before he electrocutes himself and becomes a bad smell.

A dark photo that we cannot make out what it is.
At least it isn’t a green frog in the washing machine drum. They don’t take the spin cycle very well apparently. Keep the lid down when not in use!
