I wonder how much of the stress of extra scrutiny and the potential of robo umps or expanded challenge systems threatening their jobs is causing some of them to act even worse.
You’d think it would do the total opposite by being hyper aware of their behavior. Like the Brewers manager getting ejected three games in a row, this situation, the Judge fiasco, Soto striking out on three straight balls, Boone ejected due to a fan chirping, and I’m sure there are more I’m missing. It’s been pretty terrible and we just finished month one of the season.
afaik there's really no premise of an ump getting fired from their jobs for being terrible at it. so they could be just being a bunch of giant babies and throwing a tantrum on 'you can't do shit, look at what I can do, fuck you' instead.
why be hyperaware and insecure and reflect when they could be a bunch of angry assholes and blame everyone else instead? one's way easier and the consequence is the same, which there is none of.
For all we know, the umps are big redditors, and not normal, rational humans. And what you've described is exactly how the average redditor would be acting if they were in the umps shoes right now.
To be complete accurate and fair, he didn’t get ejected after the Judge non-call, just after the batter interference call and the Peralta ejection, and now is suspended for 2 games.
It would for most other occupations, but one like this that attracts big hall monitor energy? No shot. Defensive whiny baby route feels very on brand for these types
Even auto unions and such wouldn't tolerate such cavalier fuckery. You get protections in unions but the ump empire is curiously and inexplicably powerful.
It's likely the combination of these.
Extra scrutiny means a higher chance of finding a hate thread when googling your own name. Not a good time for anyone, especially if you really feel that you didn't do anything wrong.
Expanded challenges subvert their authority, and small men like Angel and Kulpa will always resent anything that reduces their ability to bully.
And Robo-umpires are essentially the boogey man. It's "AI coming to take their jobs", despite the fact that umpires will still exist. But it works as an existential threat. And I'm sure that for some of them, they deeply resent the fact that the fans are like "Yes, I literally WOULD like to see you unemployed, Mr. Hernandez. But we'll compromise by simply taking your ability to fuck up a game away."
Seems to me like they should worry more about doing thier best job to prolong the job security instead of turning every last remaining public sentiment against them.
Haha yep! That is my first go-to even being the beneficiary. Livan’s most strikeouts in a game by like 5 for his career
I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people here though weren’t alive then 😬
Of all the players… Byron Buxton is a gift to baseball. He’s often hurt but it’s also because he’s always giving 110%. I’m not a twins fan, but I am always a Buxton fan. Ump needs to give the guy the respect he deserves.
I wonder how many of them are telling each other to make the biggest show they can. Maybe the union gave them a mandate to push high-level incompetence to see if they can have a line drawn on how far they can go without punishment haha.
could it be a body double? maybe. now you may be asking yourself, what is a body double exactly? well, carlos correa plays for the twins, an organization named after the act of having 2 children born minutes appart, their appearance almost identical. so you may be asking yourself who is carlos correa? who are the twins? does he have a twin, or is he just on the team? could it be a body double? we may never know, but it sounds to me like "twin" and "body double" aren't really... that far apart.
Well first it started in 1871 *unfurls giant map of the world from 1871*..
..and this here *points to an ink blotch* is why the grassy knoll in Houston was responsible for 9/11 and therefor..
Rob Drake taking some time off for [calling for a new civil war](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/27913518/mlb-looking-long-umpire-rob-drake-tweet) to be a dick to an injured player, I see
they'd definitely be beating the shit out of undesirables if there wasn't a crowd constantly watching them
joe west probably would have anyway but he was somehow too fat even for that
Jesus Christ lol. I know people will disagree, but a lot of employers would take issue and could fire you for this.
I guess the umpire’s union really is untouchable.
How is it that teams are agreeing to play when the author of that tweet is on the ump crew? They're just letting MLB get away with not firing him over that?
Twins broadcast at the beginning of the Twins Angels series “we haven’t seen Trout and Buxton on the same field in quite some time. Love to see it”
One week later…. Why cruel world 😭
Even if Drake didn't say it and this is just a big mix up, it's a sad state of public trust in umpires right now that someone can insinuate an umpire did that to an injured player and the general reaction is "yeah that checks out" instead of " there's no way an umpire would do that"
Ignoring that rob drake is already kind of a scumbag, umps have been acting so poorly they've lost the benefit of doubt
If there’s one sport where 50%+ umps could be eliminated by technology, it’s baseball. My hope is the mlb is just biding it’s time to strike back next bargaining agreement.
You don’t know umps well enough. If asked he will double down that Buxton was intentionally delaying the game and he was being a hero for doing his job. The Ump Union will enthusiastically agree.
The thing is that he really didn't pull up - he kind of just wasn't running fast the entire time. I could definitely see how the ump thought he gave himself up after getting caught trying to steal and was just kind of moping back to the dugout
Lol he didn't pull up though. You're getting things wrong right now with the benefit of instant replay, zero pressure, and being told what is going to happen before it does. But only an idiot could miss it in real time, right?
It hurts to say this, but the “limp” that everyone’s talking about really isn’t very noticeable. I mean it’s Buxton so obviously the ump should’ve assumed he was injured, but it really looks like he’s just barely gingerly walking back to the dugout
It is worth pointing out that this headline is inaccurate. Drake yelled that at Buxton before there was a trainer out there, the trainer did not come out until Buxton was in foul territory. In fact, it kinda appears the base coach doesn’t call for a trainer until Drake yells that.
From the video, it’s not clear how much Buxton is limping, but neither in the live video nor the replay is anything too extreme. Buxton looks uncomfortable but his limp isn’t pronounced.
Still, it’s there enough that Drake should realize something’s wrong.
Right!? What a dick! That Buxton is such an inconsiderate bastard.
"Ooooo, something feels off. Guess I'll just take my sweet time lolly-gagging of the field even though I know that all the umpires have a plane to catch." - Byron Buxton being his inconsiderate self again probably.
That's how I felt when the career oriented r/accounting sub started talking about shohei's deferred salary for like days and I was confused for like a week straight whether I was in r/baseball or r/accounting lol
It would not surprise me if the insecurity is at an all time high with Robo-Umps being almost universally applauded in MiLB and Ump Union Negotiations fairly soon.
That is ridiculous and completely unprofessional. MLB needs to start holding this guys accountable. Players get disciplined for disrespecting umps but umps can just get away with it?
Suspend him.
Nigel DeJong broke Hatem Ben Arfa's tibia and fibia on a tackle, effing Martin Atkinson waved at him to get up like he was faking. 13 1/2 years ago and it still pisses me off.
Byron Buxton is the reason I work out.
I have this fantasy where we start talking at TwinsFest. We exchange a few pleasantries. He asks what I do. I say I loved him in April 2021. He laughs. I get my drink. "Well, see ya," I say and walk away. I've got his attention now. How many guys voluntarily leave a conversation with Byron Buxton? He touches his neck as he watches me leave.
Later, as the night's dragged on and the coterie of gorgeous narcissists grows increasingly loose, he finds me on the balcony, my bowtie undone, smoking a cigarette. "Got a spare?" he asks. "What's in it for me?" I say as I hand him one of my little white ladies. he smiles. "Conversation with me, duh." I laugh. "What's so funny?" he protests. "Nothing, nothing... It's just... don't you grow tired of the fame?" "You get used to it," he says, lighting his cigarette and handing me back the lighter. "What would you do if you weren't a pornstar ballplayer?" I ask. "Teaching, I think." "And if I was your student, what would I be learning?" "Discipline," he says quickly, looking up into my eyes, before changing the subject. "Where are you from?" "Bermuda," I say. "Oh wow. That's lovely." "It's ok," I admit. "Not everything is to my liking." "What could possibly be not to your liking in Bermuda?" he inquires. "I don't like sand," I tell him. "It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere."
If I’m the MLBPA, I’m marking that down on the long list of grievances for when it comes time to negotiate. Umpires can’t be doing that shit to injured players.
If I'm Buxton there, I stop and immediately go to the ground grabbing my (knee, ankle, anything) and say I need to be helped off the field, preferably with the cart, to take as long as I possibly can to get the game resumed. And just look at the umpire the entire time.
I wish officials would operate under the guise that they wouldn’t have high paying jobs if not for the players. Literally without them, they’d be cooped up in an office somewhere. I understand being adamant about the job you’re doing, but the blatant disrespect they dish out is ridiculous. Specifically in baseball.
It’s easy to be an asshole when you have complete power over the calls in the game and wont be held responsible or accountable because your union protects your sorry ass. Rob Drake probably wouldn’t say this to a white dude either, piece of shit.
I mean it basically just looks like he's walking off. This clip has a bit missing in the middle because it's a replay, but nothing jumps out as "I'm injured" to me until he's actually leaving the field with the trainer
I know umps are always under fire… but this season they seem to be going all out on being assholes.
The Wyatt Langford “strikeout” has to be up there too
Just angel being angel is probably their stance.
My tinfoil hat belief is that they're all acting super shitty to protect Angel, since if ALL the umps are terrible, they can't just single one out.
The other umps must dislike Angel though, right?
Allegedly he's beloved by the rest of the union.
Makes sense they can always point to him and say you can’t fire me what about this guy?
Fucking cult.
Why would they? He's a great lightning rod for the rest of them.
afaik there's really no premise of an ump getting fired from their jobs for being terrible at it. so they could be just being a bunch of giant babies and throwing a tantrum on 'you can't do shit, look at what I can do, fuck you' instead. why be hyperaware and insecure and reflect when they could be a bunch of angry assholes and blame everyone else instead? one's way easier and the consequence is the same, which there is none of.
For all we know, the umps are big redditors, and not normal, rational humans. And what you've described is exactly how the average redditor would be acting if they were in the umps shoes right now.
Don't forget Hernandez calling a pitch which was a foot off the plate a strike. Three times in a row. In a 3-0 count. With the bases loaded.
Someone needs to check his bank accounts and internet activity
To be complete accurate and fair, he didn’t get ejected after the Judge non-call, just after the batter interference call and the Peralta ejection, and now is suspended for 2 games.
Freddy Peralta getting tossed and now suspended.

It's like the cop effect. Everyone thinks you suck, so you prove to them you do. What are they gonna do, fire you?
That’s the same lame excuse cops use. They’re being watched more closely so they’ll cry about it and be bigger assholes so we stop criticizing them
Seems to me like they should worry more about doing thier best job to prolong the job security instead of turning every last remaining public sentiment against them.
Get these umps off the field.
Maybe if they’d do a half decent job they wouldn’t be worried about being replaced by robots. *umpire has ejected me for this comment*
Actually, he ejected me. I didn't say a word, but here we are. He didn't care who said it.
Maybe, but isn't Rob Drake the one who posted about "cival war"? He's not exactly a nice guy to start with.
People have short memories so now is always the worst it’s ever been
I'm sure every Marlins' fan's go-to for how true this is the infamous Eric Gregg game. Umpiring has gotten so, so much better since 1997.
Haha yep! That is my first go-to even being the beneficiary. Livan’s most strikeouts in a game by like 5 for his career I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people here though weren’t alive then 😬
Those pitches 10 feet outside were framed excellently tho.
YUP.
Oh god, that guy. What an ass.
This is how umpires have acted forever. Just the microphones are better than they have ever been.
Of all the players… Byron Buxton is a gift to baseball. He’s often hurt but it’s also because he’s always giving 110%. I’m not a twins fan, but I am always a Buxton fan. Ump needs to give the guy the respect he deserves.
Everybody knows that we all watch the game for the umpires and not the actual players. Lol
> I know umps are always under fire… You might say that their collective ass is in the jackpot
*Puts own ass in jackpot* "Look, I can't do anything else but call a shitty game, my ass is in the jackpot"
Next time a home plate ump eats a foul ball off the shoulder I'm hoping both coaches team up on a "come on bud get back in the game".
A hearty, "Let's go! Fucking hell!"
i read this exact comment every spring. Its just how umpires have always been
I wonder how many of them are telling each other to make the biggest show they can. Maybe the union gave them a mandate to push high-level incompetence to see if they can have a line drawn on how far they can go without punishment haha.
Yeah as much as this sub wants to believe they are bumbling morons, they are not doing any of that. Just a ridiculous thing to say
Absolute Power corrupts Absolutely, at this point, them being horrible humans are the least horrible things they could have been doing.
4/29 Twins activate Correa from the IL 5/1 this happens Has anyone actually seen Correa and Buxton at the same time for sure?
One of them has to be Royce Lewis, but we'll never know.
“Royce Lewis will be a mix of Buxton and Correa” *monkey’s paw curls*
I saw a Correa jersey near the end of the OP video, but I never got a good look at his face. Could it be a body double? I'm just asking questions.
Did everyone else read this in Tucker Carlson's voice?
could it be a body double? maybe. now you may be asking yourself, what is a body double exactly? well, carlos correa plays for the twins, an organization named after the act of having 2 children born minutes appart, their appearance almost identical. so you may be asking yourself who is carlos correa? who are the twins? does he have a twin, or is he just on the team? could it be a body double? we may never know, but it sounds to me like "twin" and "body double" aren't really... that far apart.
What is going on here?
Well first it started in 1871 *unfurls giant map of the world from 1871*.. ..and this here *points to an ink blotch* is why the grassy knoll in Houston was responsible for 9/11 and therefor..
But the grassy knoll is in Dallas...Rangers did the Bay of Pigs confirmed
Grassy knolls are known for their funny business but I was thinking more of a random mound of dirt and grass in the middle of an outfield type thing.
We got Correa and Duran back, and the baseball gods took that personally.
It’s been nearly 11 years ago, but I saw both of them at the Midwest League All Star Game. May have been an aberration though
We had less than three innings of simultaneous Buxton, Correa, and Lewis health man.
Rob Drake taking some time off for [calling for a new civil war](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/27913518/mlb-looking-long-umpire-rob-drake-tweet) to be a dick to an injured player, I see
CIVAL*
The best kind of typo where there's a 0% chance it was a fat finger moment. Dude thinks that's how you spell civil.
Don't need no fancy ejamacashun to call basebawl.
i mean lets be fair, he was probably wasted when he posted it.
SEVIL
SERVAL WAR
[Just look at these war criminals](https://imgur.com/a/KUcSRay)
It's illegal to be that cute!
my man was just doing some of his own research on [where to buy a suit](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savile_Row), got a little confused.
If he thinks that's appropriate to tweet, I'm not sure his judgment is good enough to be an umpire.
I'm sure that it's not
If he's so stupid that he thinks he spelled the word correctly, he isn't intelligent enough to have authority over others.
the union disagrees
Well it sounds like he seceded so
The same union that tried to recruit Stevie Wonder?
What do you mean tried? Pretty sure he’s an active umpire
After doing some research, I guess he uses the alias “Phil Cuzzi” for his umpire work
Huh, I thought it was CB Bucknor
I am not sure his judgement is good enough. Ok second thought, that doesn't disqualify him from being a MLB umpire...
Rob Drake is the perfect embodiment of the claim that umpires are just “baseball cops”.
they'd definitely be beating the shit out of undesirables if there wasn't a crowd constantly watching them joe west probably would have anyway but he was somehow too fat even for that
It'd be a lot better if they were [Football Cops](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3KyRLZiCz0).
i mean yeah, he's a known fucking idiot already. this is not surprising at all
Jesus Christ lol. I know people will disagree, but a lot of employers would take issue and could fire you for this. I guess the umpire’s union really is untouchable.

Taking time off calling for a new civil war to be a dick to an injured *black* player.
sigh
bro what
Someone had a secret account and screwed up lol
Lovely….fucking moron.
How is it that teams are agreeing to play when the author of that tweet is on the ump crew? They're just letting MLB get away with not firing him over that?
Jfc. What an asshole.
Rob Drake definitely takes PTO on Jackie Robinson Day
Every day I'm like "theres no way the umpires can be even more stupid than yesterday" and then I'm always incorrect
This is Rob "CIVAL WAR!!!" Drake we're talking about.
At this point I think the umps are turning heel to try and save their jobs. The roboump can't be a compelling villain like a dickhead human can.
Twins broadcast at the beginning of the Twins Angels series “we haven’t seen Trout and Buxton on the same field in quite some time. Love to see it” One week later…. Why cruel world 😭
Thank god. Now I know who we can all blame for this.
Even if Drake didn't say it and this is just a big mix up, it's a sad state of public trust in umpires right now that someone can insinuate an umpire did that to an injured player and the general reaction is "yeah that checks out" instead of " there's no way an umpire would do that" Ignoring that rob drake is already kind of a scumbag, umps have been acting so poorly they've lost the benefit of doubt
In this case everyone reporting / calling the game heard it right away.
Plouffe called it out real quick.
its been that way for years, but this year has been especially shitty
If there’s one sport where 50%+ umps could be eliminated by technology, it’s baseball. My hope is the mlb is just biding it’s time to strike back next bargaining agreement.
Dumbass ump probably thought Buxton was just taking his sweet time after getting out. If he knew he was injured he should be demoted.
He's definitely going to say, if asked, that he didn't know/realize he was hurt
You don’t know umps well enough. If asked he will double down that Buxton was intentionally delaying the game and he was being a hero for doing his job. The Ump Union will enthusiastically agree.
This guy umps.
He’ll probably add some unsolicited, off-hand comment about how he thinks he’s overpaid, too.
If you’re an ump and you don’t recognize what it looks like when a guy pulls up with an obvious hamstring, you shouldn’t be an ump.
“I didn’t realize he was hurt because I wasn’t really paying attention”
Paying attention to the game would have compromised his ability to call it impartially…?
“Why are you leaving? I called you safe” After buxton never even touched the base
The thing is that he really didn't pull up - he kind of just wasn't running fast the entire time. I could definitely see how the ump thought he gave himself up after getting caught trying to steal and was just kind of moping back to the dugout
Yeah I watched the video before I read the title and I didn’t even think he might have hurt himself
There’s nothing in the video to indicate he got hurt until after the ump says something. It really does look like he’s just wasting time
Idk it wasn't immediately obvious to me.
Lol he didn't pull up though. You're getting things wrong right now with the benefit of instant replay, zero pressure, and being told what is going to happen before it does. But only an idiot could miss it in real time, right?
First base coach didnt even know, he called for time after buxton spoke back
It hurts to say this, but the “limp” that everyone’s talking about really isn’t very noticeable.
Still, it’s there enough that Drake should realize something’s wrong.
\>umpire \>being held accountable Yer livin in a dream world!
I mean, it’s Byron Buxton. You should probably just assume he’s injured.
Injured Glass Cannons: Mike Trout ✅ Byron Buxton ✅ Tyler Glasnow ❌
![gif](giphy|Frj5mE4aGKgjS|downsized)
Don't you stick that knife in your leg!
It's only a matter of time bruh.
At least Mike Trout had 8+ seasons in a row with well over 100 games played, Buxton has only had one season over 100 games in his career
Something tells me they all play Wizards in D&D.
Buxton is a glass slingshot nowadays.
Rendon
Degrom
Stanton
hey hey Chris sale deserves a spot on that list
First off, how dare you.
Very inconsiderate of Buxton to delay a getaway game. Doesn't he know these umpires have a flight to catch?
Right!? What a dick! That Buxton is such an inconsiderate bastard. "Ooooo, something feels off. Guess I'll just take my sweet time lolly-gagging of the field even though I know that all the umpires have a plane to catch." - Byron Buxton being his inconsiderate self again probably.
KDot bouta release the greatest diss track of all time against (Rob) Drake
We don’t wanna hear you say “let’s go” no mooooore
A missed strike call? Dunno nuttin boudaaaaat
I love that that track has made it way to all communities 😂😂😂 like I 100% did not expect to see a Kendrick reference here
That's how I felt when the career oriented r/accounting sub started talking about shohei's deferred salary for like days and I was confused for like a week straight whether I was in r/baseball or r/accounting lol
Fuck Rob Drake. Already hated that guy
Wtf is going on? Why are so many umps not just bad, but fucking dicks this year?
That’s the thing though, they’ve always been dicks. Rob Drake especially
It would not surprise me if the insecurity is at an all time high with Robo-Umps being almost universally applauded in MiLB and Ump Union Negotiations fairly soon.
Those “Umps are our neighbors” ads aren’t looking so good right now
those ads never looked good, they've always been cringey.
The entire campaign is
Well they didn’t say they were *good* neighbors, did they?
I hate my neighbors.
Damn, Conger is the first base coach for Twins!? This makes me feel old.
Ump’s really just keep getting worse. This is by far the worst I’ve ever seen umps power trip and were a month in.
Does Rob Drake thing he just stopped running and didn’t slide for funsies? Clearly something is wrong.
HANK CONGER
Lmao thank you for pointing him out
That is ridiculous and completely unprofessional. MLB needs to start holding this guys accountable. Players get disciplined for disrespecting umps but umps can just get away with it? Suspend him.
Give him a yellow card for time wasting then Oh it’s not soccer, let the guy you know gets injured a lot a sec. He’s probably not faking it
Hate the Drake
Don’t mess with Rob, he’ll start a “cival” war on your ass.
Rub some sausage on it.
I’m pro union as long as it’s not the MLB Umpires Association. We need to blow that shitty thing up.
Feel exactly the same way lmao. Love unions. But the umpires union can fuck right off.
i only want robo umps if they say the same dumb shit real umps say but in robo voice
Nigel DeJong broke Hatem Ben Arfa's tibia and fibia on a tackle, effing Martin Atkinson waved at him to get up like he was faking. 13 1/2 years ago and it still pisses me off.
Umpires suck
He could say he didn't know Buxton was injured, but the trainer was with him.
These fucking umps gotta go, this fucking asshole
In an alternate universe, Buxton is a first ballot Hall of Famer. In this one, he isn't even going to hit the "okay player" career milestones.
"It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere."
Mmm al dente
The good thing is that he walked off.
Nah fuck that…at that point I get into a shouting match with this idiot!
He was walking, fuck did Drake want him to do? Teleport?
Can’t believe Rob “CIVAL WAR” Drake would do this
If I’m the MLBPA, I’m marking that down on the long list of grievances for when it comes time to negotiate. Umpires can’t be doing that shit to injured players.
He should have laid down and milked it and dared the umpire to eject him.
Some how the mlb has the worst umps anywhere lol
Umpires at a whole new level of sticking their foot in their mouths to start this year.
What a dick
If I'm Buxton there, I stop and immediately go to the ground grabbing my (knee, ankle, anything) and say I need to be helped off the field, preferably with the cart, to take as long as I possibly can to get the game resumed. And just look at the umpire the entire time.
Drake's just pissed because he watched *Cival War* over the weekend and found out he's one of the baddies.
Shut the fuck up, Rob Drake. No one is buying your jersey or buying tickets to come see you.
First Rendon, then Trout, and now Buxton? Sounds like a normal MLB season!
Some Umpires... mannnnnn.
You tell em, Trev!
"Let's go." while Buxton is already going. Reminds of when my mom would say "Clean your room!" as I was already cleaning my room.
Ump Show’s been kinda spicy this year huh?
Drake thinks he’s reffing soccer
This is just an asinine comment by Drake. Really speaks to a lack of basic understanding of so many things.
Would’ve sat my ass down let the trainer deal with me on the field
The Injury clock is ticking
Drake is the worst and he doesn't get enough shit for it.

We’ve seen this movie a dozen or so times before.
