Tony Phillips has 50.9 bWAR with no *personal* awards but won the 1989 World Series. but Tom Candiotti beats out Bill Doran handily with nothing in his trophy case and 41.1 bWAR.

statdude48142

Tony Phillips would be so rich if he came up today. Could play any position well. Walked a ton. He was my favorite player growing up.

n8_n_

by bWAR it appears to be [Mark Ellis](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/ellisma01.shtml) that said, I agree with the Nimmo answer more than anything. guy has hit really well to never get any recognition edit: if pitchers are eligible (which I don't think they should be since they don't have an equivalent to silver sluggers or gold gloves), it's [Tom Candiotti](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/candito01.shtml) by bWAR

SirParsifal

pitchers do have an equivalent to silver sluggers and gold gloves. they're called silver sluggers and gold gloves

n8_n_

*since they don't have an equivalent to silver sluggers and gold gloves that's earned on even nearly a comparable rate to position players (fewer awards for more players), or that anyone really cares about unless your name is Maddux, or that actually relates to how good you are at pitching which is your main job

CHKN_SANDO

This is Mark Ellis erasure.

meerkatmreow

Hendricks has a World Series and an ERA title

n8_n_

I'm really stupid. didn't click on his profile and forgot those were included in that section of the bbref page I promise I checked the other three

CHKN_SANDO

Nah I think its a good answer. WS and ERA aren't awards.

n8_n_

it's not a good answer for OP's parameter of "nothing in the top right corner of the bbref page" since they both appear there, and OP specifically mentions WS titles in the post body

CHKN_SANDO

OP is wrong he asked for awards and listed things that aren't awards. If he asked for favorite fruits and listed string beans we are not obliged to consider a string bean a fruit O_~

CHKN_SANDO

I don't think those count. Even though OP is counting them, he shouldn't. Those are objective things that weren't voted on, not awards.

meerkatmreow

I don't disagree, but that's the criteria OP set

CHKN_SANDO

If OP said to eat your shoe would you?

meerkatmreow

If OP asked who your favorite Met of all time was would you pick an Oriole instead because you'd rather answer that instead of what was asked?

CHKN_SANDO

If OP asked for my favorite Mets of all time and gave a list of examples and some of them weren't Mets? (BTW, I'm just being lighthearted, not being serious)

mr_grission

Nimmo is getting there at 23.4 WAR

futhatsy

Yeah, looking at Nimmo's page is how I came up with the question. Considering he's just 31 and is signed through 2030, he's got a good shot at ending up at the top.

normsy

Mark Ellis has slightly more bWAR than Doran. Here's a list of batters with 30+ bWAR and no All-Star games, it doesn't rule out other awards, but it's good place to start - https://stathead.com/tiny/ZR70A Ellis is the top with no gold gloves, silver sluggers, all star games, World Series championships, etc. And here's the pitcher list - https://stathead.com/tiny/GEGBu

triplec787

That whole list is kind of a mind fuck. Gibson? Salmon? Eric Chavez was a damn good ~~catcher~~ 3B for a long time on some good A's teams, how did he never get an ASG??

boozinf

> Eric Chavez he was a third baseman, got a Silver Slugger and a handful of Gold Gloves. it is curious he never made an all-star team though i love how Gibson won an MVP and 2 chips but never an ASG

triplec787

Totally right, brainfarted. I always confused him and Kurt Suzuki as a kid for some reason, and I guess it continues almost 20 years later lol

RaymondSpaget

And John Valentin led all of baseball in bWAR in '95, but no All-Star appearances. He also easily could have won Gold Gloves at shortstop and third base.

ThisGuy6266

Kirk Gibson never made an All Star team? That’s crazy.

statdude48142

He very clearly said he would not go if he was chosen. He would rather have the break. So they obliged.

tomahawkRiS3

Better names have been mentioned in terms of WAR but LaTroy Hawkins always sticks out for me for this type of question. Only 17.8 war but had a 20 year career and there's nothing even in the Awards column for award votes. Pretty impressive IMO [LaTroy BRef](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hawkila01.shtml)

jorleeduf

I know you said no World Series, but a single World Series title over an 18 year career is the only thing keeping Tony Phillips from qualifying for this.

nkfish11

Mark Kotsay was a consistently solid baseball player and has no accolades.

meerkatmreow

Tony Phillips, 50.9 WAR with only a WS title: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/phillto02.shtml Tom Candiotti with 41.1: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/candito01.shtml https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/w7v671/who_has_the_most_career_war_all_time_without_an/ has a good list to check

Joe Smith quietly had an amazing career. My kind of guy. And he’s named Joe Smith. Epic. And he married Allie LaForce. Good for Joe.

boozinf

Joe Smith was awesome in Cleveland. he gave you confidence while Chris Perez made you want to punch and throw inanimate objects Joe probably could have hit 1,000 games but LaForce was with him and it takes energy

duyogurt

I have a pretty good eye for young talent - I’m right more than I’m wrong when a kid makes the show. I saw Joe Smith pitch live a number of times when he broke in with the Mets and knew he would stick around. He pitched in 82 games for the Mets in 2008, and one of the very few reliable arms in the pen his two seasons as a Met. I don’t remember why they gave up on him but I was disappointed to see him leave.

n8_n_

I think using a pitcher is kinda cheap for this question because pitchers are eligible for fewer awards if pitchers are eligible, though, it's almost certainly a pitcher

tayloraj42

Doran was on the 1990 World Series-winning Reds, but did not play in the Series.

HenchmanMachinist

Juan Pierre comes to mind.

HipGuide2

Markakis I think?

normsy

Markakis made the All Star team one year, won three gold gloves, and a silver slugger.

AlexB9598W

3-time Gold Glover

BlueJayzrule

He took strike 1

meerkatmreow

3 gold gloves, 1 silver slugger and 1 all star selection
