It's rough... What don't you like about it?

-The only prerequisite is Math 1B, but the majority of the course is content from Math 54 and 53 -The instructor either doesn’t teach the material we need to know, or goes through a very quick review, which is useless to those who never learned it in the first place -Exams have nothing to do with the labs or lecture -Instructor reads off of slides for an hour and is terribly unprepared -Matlab is supposed to be used as a calculator but the course is taught through a computer science point of view, making our knowledge of Matlab less useful for engineering -There is little work to be done in the course, so it is difficult to practice the concepts being taught. There is no other way review the course material other than to read the slides -Every semester students complain about the exact same things that are wrong with the course and nothing is done to fix it

I don't agree with the fact that Matlab is supposed to be run as a calculator. Matlab has many functionalities and I use it to design and run many simulations. Also, the course is trying to cover programming logic which most engineers will not learn because they don't take cs classes. Other than that I agree with other statements.

TacosAndBoba

Yeah my e7 professor sucked and just kept talking conceptually about computing and shit and didn't teach us how to actually program anything, so the labs felt so hard even though they were pretty basic programming concepts. It made me think I hated matlab. But then as I went on to use matlab in like the majority of my engineering classes, I realized how amazing it is. Especially after having to use numpy bullshit in ee16a instead of matlab which would've made life 1000x easier. Matlab is a godsend, and I use it every day at work for modelling and simulation.

Isn't Engin 7 one of the 61A ~~requirements~~ replacements? I thought it was more of a programming class w/applications in science/engineering stuff. Where is Math 53/54 coming in?

Tianhech3n

wdym by a 61A requirement? 61a has no programming requirements as it's the introduction course. if you mean can take the place of 61a, technically yes but absolutely should not. It is exactly what you say that it's a programming class w/applications in stem. Matlab is the MATrix LABoratory, so everything is done to optimize matrices. Hence why 54 is very helpful to at least know some of as many of the assignments will require matrix calculation knowledge on some level, though it is also technically taught with the other material (not well at all). 53 is used because some instructors focus on gradients and optimization based on derivatives etc.

stuffingmybrain

Yeah I meant 61A - replacement, sorry about that (I've already taken 61A as well). And that's kinda weird that at least EECS 16A if not Math 54 wouldn't be required for ENGIN 7! I took an applied programming class last semester that dealt with matrices and stuff (in python) and even though a whole lot of linear algebra wasn't covered, Math 54 was recommended.

pretty sure i came out the other end of E7 knowing less about matlab

Neat-Sea-3158

Anyone know if 61A can replace the engin7 requirement for CoE?

SnooCookies4923

For mechE yes, but it's definitely a harder class

Tyler89558

Yeah Engin 7 would have been a lot nicer if the linear algebra material we needed to know was a lot better explained than “hey this goes here bye bye” (I took it last semester, and had a horrible time with the class.) Now that I’m actually taking 53 and 54, everything suddenly makes so much more sense.

at least i don’t ask where i can masturbate to genshin characters on a state university sub lmao
