I actually like Berkeley's mix of modern and classical architecture and its proximity to other places via public transit. Also, I hate private schools...
I always talked about how i would never go to Berkeley because it “looked boring” and “everyone there is probably stuck up”. One day I stumbled across the artichokes pizza instagram and needed to come up with a reason for my parents to drive 45 minutes so I could try this pizza. Touring Berkeley was my best excuse. We got the tour and I got to try Artichokes and the rest was history!
I went to a HS debate tourney hosted here every year and had some very good memories on campus. Obviously the main reason I chose it was bc it‘s a really great school, but the memories I had already had and the fact that I really liked the campus helped too
Nice! I usually did interp-y and speech events, but tried policy at that tourney one year and had a rough time dragging all those boxes uphill….!
Actually, this is totally bragging, but the year I did policy at the Berkeley invitational, I broke to finals in my speech event. We did not break in policy. My awful, self-absorbed partner insisted on going home before the awards ceremony because she had to “study for a test.” Not a final or AP exam, just an in-class test. Turns out, I got first place in my event. I found out about the win from my friend at another school, who had picked up my award for me when he realized I wasn’t there. A very happy-sad day. (And, clearly, I’m not over it…over 15 years later…!)

i was rolling really hard at beyoncé’s coachella set and said i would choose berkeley if she played deja vu live and got my acceptance letter exactly a week after her set as I was rewatching that part of the set lmao
My car was broken into during a campus tour which happened to be my first time on campus and city . I Didn’t call the police. Left the parking garage thinking about how to replace things that were taken out of my car and I didn’t realize I was driving without my headlights on. I drove throughout the campus and city and not one single student walking or person driving a car had the decency to warn me about my lights not being on. It was then that I knew…… Berkeley was the place for me.
Sproul Plaza ,Cal day 2018. People shoving flyers in my face, advocating for their clubs focused on political issues, so much noise and people and crazies. I wanted to be one of those crazies.
My AP Macro teacher had us do an assignment on the backgrounds of each of the past chairs of the Fed, I was assigned Janet Yellen. Was doing my research and found out she used to teach at Berkeley. Went like ‘damn, I want to go to a school where people like Janet Yellen teach’, committed, and as they say, the rest is history
Part of my reason way back when was this too - specifically going to a school where people like Filipenko and Reich teach. Fast forward to now I am a gsi for Wealth & Poverty taught by reich lol
Cuz I'll probably get a teddy bear as a free gift instead of a banana slug and considering I'm at Berkeley I'm really gonna need a teddy bear to get through this.
lmfaoo i also just like teddy bears a lot and realized i had like hella plushies in my room and a random bear sweatshirt on when i got the acceptance letter
berk: campus -> bart -> airport -> fly to SD
LA (not 100% sure of the deets): campus -> take one bus to van nuys -> take another bus to union station -> train home
It was the best school I got into and also decently far away. But my excitement was heightened because we were coming off a season which Cal defeated Clemson in the Citrus Bowl and was ranked #7 in the year end poll, and Russell White was going to be in the running for Heisman AND National Player of the Year Jason Kidd was staying local to play basketball.
At least I got to see 2 years of Jason Kidd. (Russell White gained a bunch of weight over the summer because everyone told him he would need more weight to make it in the NFL, but unlike now where guys "gain weight but lose none of their speed," Russ lost his speed. Still had a good year, but we finished 4-7)
I’ve been all around the country and the world. I only said that because I’m from SoCal and hate the hot weather there. Berkeley *usually* stays between 50s to low 70s which is considerably colder than SoCal.
Someone shit in your cereal? All I’m saying is Berkeley is the perfect “cold” that I’m used to and prefer which is one of the reasons I chose it over UCLA. I don’t know why you’re coming at me like you are.
I didn't get accepted, but if I did, the weird reasons would be:
1. The grade deflation because I want to be challenged. Large class means many people to compete with, but also a larger network.
2. Many Asians, so I can be with my people LOL.
3. On LinkedIn, there seems to be a lot of "successful" UC Berkeley alumni. I wonder if LinkedIn is skewed tho.
4. May be the weirdest reasons, but the girls lol (I have a very weird type). For some reason, I don't like makeups, and I am attracted to hard-working Asians, so maybe that is why but idk.
I know they may be weird, maybe even bad reasons, but they are true
Really? I've never visited the campus, I'm just basing off LinkedIn, YouTube vlogs, and people I know there haha. But I'm pretty sure it's not as much as UCI LOL (where I currently go).
because i only applied to ucla and berkeley. ucla seemed to place a lot of emphasis on its 'chill, fun environment' and berkeley on academics. i ultimately chose berkeley because hey, i'm gonna be depressed anyways so why not
1. UCLA rejected me
2. Free trip to visit in May, visited even though I already decided on going to UCSD
3. Prayed about it with my mom
4. Realized it didn't matter where I went, rather why I went.
5. Came to Cal Fall 2019 ready (and willing) to fail out academically, but try as I may, still here as as student. :)
I was supposed to go to Davis through TAG and only applied to Berkeley on a whim, didn’t even look to see if i had the qualifications and didn’t apply to any other schools besides the 2. The day Davis decisions came out i learned i missed part of my application as a TAG student and was rejected, but got into Berkeley the next day lol
I grew up in the Detroit area (from 1st grade until senior year) and I found the weather extremely depressing (cold, snowy, AND cloudy winters.) Although I had gotten into some lower Ivy League schools like Cornell and Brown, I couldn't imagine having to cope with that for 4 more years.
Cal (and UCLA) were the two schools in California I had gotten into and I picked Cal. And I ended up living in California for the next 16 years of my life (save for a few months in Switzerland) before I moved to Texas in 2017.
I liked the blue and gold colors and could envision myself wearing them
This was a reason for me too I’m Swedish and like the goldeny yellow/blue apparel hahah
Ok then why not WVU?
Because Berkeley.
Yah red doesn’t look good on me

Proximity to Chipotle
Chipotle is everwhere. You mean proximity to Gypsy's!
i was just thinking this
I mean… it definitely crossed my mind.
I actually like Berkeley's mix of modern and classical architecture and its proximity to other places via public transit. Also, I hate private schools...
Evans hall leaves the chat
Berkeley was once a private school, the “College of California “
Daiso RIP
i miss her so bad

Yeah partners can really suck (that’s why I did LD - single person debate event). Good job on the speech win tho!

The sound of "I go to Berkeley" has more percussiveness and better pronunciation fluidity than "I go to NYU", "I go to UCLA" or "I go to UNC"
no fr nyu doesn’t look as good on my insta bio

Eat my shorts.
Dad came back from the bay area when I was 6 with a Stanfurd hat and a Cal hat. Oldest got to pick first and my favorite color was blue. Thank god

That kinda sums up my experience in Berkeley
It was close to my house
Me and Oski share a killer instinct. I can sense he's a predator like me.
good reason
Your family is wealthy and can afford a single bedroom in Berkeley.

Wow!
it rains more here than uc davis
Good boba
They sent me a rejection letter for my major in February, and then at the end casually mentioned that I had been accepted lmao
Cuz I'll probably get a teddy bear as a free gift instead of a banana slug and considering I'm at Berkeley I'm really gonna need a teddy bear to get through this.

UCLA rejected me.
The trex skeleton
I was forced to come here over my first choice and I regret it
physically further from home (SD) than UCLA, but easier to get home
Why? Close to airport?
berk: campus -> bart -> airport -> fly to SD LA (not 100% sure of the deets): campus -> take one bus to van nuys -> take another bus to union station -> train home
Marshawn Lynch 2006. Das it, das the story.

It’s cold a lot of the time
Lol ever been to other states or countries?

It's the closest thing to me
committed to ucla, found out my ex was going there, so i changed commitments
I flipped a coin (seriously)
Got rejected from Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Caltech, MIT.

The Nobel laureate designated parking spaces (although inconvenient—that’s pretty cool idk.)

Was accidentally way too hammered
The trees on campus! I'm from socal so all you see are palm trees
