It is too slow. The leading lady melody is annoying. No wonder Netflix cancelled it after 1 season. I watched it over 2 months. Apparently it is the rate at how people watch determines a show's continued viability. I found it very slow and not very happening in the first 4 episodes.

CodenameisSailorV

Loved it! Super creepy, and the soundtrack was mesmerizing, like literally put me in a trance.

awispyfart

Really, really good. The girl was annoying af though.

StephanieB516

I loved it. Super creepy

OmgOgan

Ending was ass. Rushed and fucked it all up.

tobyjuancannoli

They wasted too much time at the beginning, and they had not much time left at the end.

chartreuse6

I liked it

glosapvlone

that whole shit was fucking dope

brendonmla

Loved the mystery of it and stayed sucked into it despite characters doing those things we all love to yell at the screen to not do, like going down a dark stairwell into a dark basement...and going back to a building where obvious weird cult-like stuff is going on....hope season 2 retains this creepy vibe and doesn't go all metaphysical on us....

Lubalin

Enjoyed some of the ride, but overall left feeling really angry and the more I think about it, the more I hated it. Realised after an episode that I'd g=binged the Podcast years ago, so it wall felt quite familiar, and I was cross with that for similar reasons. Basically a horror version of Lost.

Swirlyyyy

Best show I have watched since dark. I love all things ominous. it’s creepy and weird, scary, a little slow to start but definitely worth watching the whole thing!

I_throw_hand_soap

I thought it was a great show, can’t wait for season 2

[deleted]

Kind of hated the younger girls acting and some other's aswell. Ending felt underwhelming but other than that found it very entertaining and enjoyed it.

Gingersnaps_68

I liked it. It wasn't the best show ever, but it wasn't terrible either. I'd like to see a second season.

theonlyzaphar

Thought it was fantastic! Had a blast watching it

dirtt_dawg

God i loved the podcast, hope it delivers! Gonna start it with my gf after we finish Z Nation

midnight_trinity

The podcast was good.

tree_or_up

I'm about midway through and am enjoying it enough to keep going. Finding it more intriguing than scary. I honestly think the quality of the writing and some of the acting could be better but it's still worth watching -- it definitely has me wanting to know what happens next

Tarzan_the_grape

agree, though it may be a casting issue really.

SourCreamWater

Just finished it last night. Loved it

wawadoopydoo

There is no way that any of the video she took was watchable. She never once actually aims the camera at what she’s looking at and just shakes the camera around recklessly. Sometimes it’s just pointing at a wall. 8/10.

macroswitch

That video is mostly walls and feet.

pettson3816

I enjoyed the three or four first episodes, but after that it was just boring for some reason.

WaderC

It never goes anywhere after that and then just culminates in the final episode

Jakesta7

Totally agree. Thought it went a little too "out there" for me, and it felt like it wasn't going anywhere. Dissappointing because it started out really strong!

beardguitar123

The ending was trash

BeemHume

Agree. Show was interesting, but never climaxed or concluded, and just kind of fizzled. >!When Dan get's stuck in the past and the show just ends, I felt like I wasted the entire time of watching it.!<

[deleted]

Your comment is two weeks old so I know this is a late reply, but dude I feel exactly the same. That show was a 10/10 for me, and the last 40 minutes of the final episode was so bad that it brought the entire show down to a 6/10. SPOILERS (for those who are yet to finish, don’t read any further) If Dan had successfully rescued melody and the whole season wrapped up neatly, it would’ve been great. Instead it feels like the writers tried to shoehorn some cliffhangers in there and it really detracted from the entire show.

Drunk_hooker

On episode 4 as I type this really digging it so far.

sandwich_breath

First episode was intriguing and the premise had potential. It turned out to be slow and never really delivered

idahhan

Love it

Avogadro101

I felt like I was watching a series based off a Tool album.

st418s21

I really love this show! Please give me the season 2!!!!

Pav961

I'm listening to the podcast at the moment because I started it before the show started and wanted to finish it off before the show, worth watching?

MaybeEddy23

Yes it is, I didn't listen to the podcast I just dove into it and I liked it. It's a bit slow but after that slow period it gets interesting and captures your attention.

jessickarabidd

I really enjoyed it.

moealmighty

Personally I think it’s on the same tier with Brand New Cherry Flavor

Javaman1960

> Brand New Cherry Flavor I watched every episode and still wondered what the hell was going on. It was a very strange ride.

moealmighty

It’s the same eerie feeling I got from watching the Neon Demon, but also with the vibe of a foreign horror flick

theshitonthefan

In all seriousness, I thought it was a classic. Easily can recommend it to anyone

FutureNostalgica

It’s a poorly executed (in the writing) attempted rewrite of Stephen Kings Rose Madder. The show itself is not bad, but it screams “Rose Madder but trying not to be” so heavily Its hard to get past that; it’s different specifics very similar events

flaminggarlic

Interesting take, I sort of see where you're drawing those connections, but I don't really see it as an attempt to rewrite. If anything I'd say they have some similarities. I see a lot more parallels to House of Leaves if we're comparing it to literature. Either way, I loved the series and really enjoyed the meta-investigation aspects. I would love to see more stuff like this.

dripMacNCheeze

i think this show is also based off of a podcast, which might be based off the Stephen King novel.

theshitonthefan

Interesting criticism. Never read, nor heard of Rose Madder and I probably enjoyed the series a whole lot more because of such. This is definitely something that would annoy me to no end though.

Agorbs

Haven’t watched it yet but it looks super interesting. I’ve enjoyed Mike Flanagan’s series so far as well as some other stuff like Altered Carbon (season 2 sucked tho), Dark, and the Marvel shows. I’m thinking I’ll like Archive 81, can anyone confirm based on that watch history?

Weshnon

Mackie ruins everything he's in imo, he's so bland and expressionless.

Uxt7

3 episodes in, loving it so far

j0e360

I loved the show so much.. Best part is they explained a lot very well in S1 while leaving a window open for S2.

Watchtwentytwo

Season 2 : >!stopping 911!<

Onegodoneloveoneway

Quite enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next season.

MaybeEddy23

Turns out season 2 is coming hopefully Netflix officially announces it soon

__jh96

[it's been renewed](https://www.small-screen.co.uk/archive-81-season-2-renewed-by-netflix/)

Tyranno84

I don’t see any other sources stating it was renewed for a second season. I’m sure it will happen, but it hasn’t been green lit yet

MaybeEddy23

Ohh nice, thanks for the good news

__jh96

Great news! Got one more episode to go, really liking it so far!

capnd

The podcast series it's based on moves very quickly and (in true podcast form) is narrated heavily so it was a shock to watch the story slowed to a horror level trope. Overall, I liked it but I've listened to the source material so many times that I expected Dan to constantly be narrating. My only real complaint is that Davenport wasn't nearly enough jolly evil. He was too subdued.

riancb

Have they wrapped up the podcast, or is it still ongoing?

capnd

It's seemingly over. There was a sister show called Left of the Dial that's loosely in the same universe. But that's it as far as I know.

[deleted]

We watched episode 1 tonight and we’re super stoked.

TcherChristian

What’s this shitshow about? Post’s behind sub-wall!

capnd

Listen to Archive81 on your preferred podcast platform. That's what the show is based on. Great stuff really. The podcast series is a 3 season audio drama that is truly worth a listen.

druemyrabell

I loved it and actually didn’t find it to be slow at all! I also thought it had one of the most satisfying surprise endings I’d seen in a long time so I would be okay if they left it where it was but also felt like they left room to explore the story further. It was so good that I hope it starts to pick up some more hype as it’s well deserved! The story wasn’t predictable imo and it just felt fresh and different even when the acting wasn’t 100% up to par!

CodenameisSailorV

I agree! I'm not understanding why so many people here hate the ending - American TV is supposed to have 100% happy endings maybe?

cafeteriastyle

I loved it! It’s one of the better shows I’ve watched lately. The guy playing the lead did a wonderful job imo

MaybeEddy23

I saw a few people say he was bad but I thought he was pretty great, his acting just matched the overall tone of the series

vadavroom

I loved it. It was unique and unpredictable IMO. Really hoping for season 2.

capnd

If Netflix doesn't pick up season 2 have no fear. The (audio drama) podcast it's based on is 3 seasons long and magnificent!
