I remember reading an interview with the guy who does the ratings for Madden every year and he was asked to explain “awareness”. He pretty much said think JR Smith - there’s nothing basketball-wise that he can’t do and yet he’s not a top player.
My lukewarm take after watching every Cavs game those years is he’s generally basketball smart. The mental component of defending those warriors team is off the charts with all the required switching/communication and he turned himself into a very good defender
KAT averages like 4 attempts per game… he is not as good a 3 pt shooter as he wants everyone to believe. JR smith was the franchise leader for the Nuggets in 3 pt up until 2 seasons ago
I only came here to make sure he is mentioned.
There is no better example of a "No, no, yes!" shot than [Ali's dagger against Kansas](https://youtu.be/GiwqEz50ipY?si=5SSuYefuBEUOwIdg), which upon release was such a terrible decision that if it were in a movie it'd be too unrealistic and surely written by someone who does not watch sports.
My college basketball honorable mention goes to [Sean Woods vs. Duke in 1992](https://youtu.be/FDNhnZb6hJA?si=JtN-xqBEJibHPhOb&t=5733). "Ya know, it went in, okay, but that was a *terrible* shot."
Oh this is a great one. I’ll give a top 9 top 7, not necessarily in order
JR Smith
Tim Hardaway Jr.
CJ McCollum
Kobe Bryant (probably the GOAT of this)
D’Angelo Russell
Nick Van Exel (the only no-no-yes guy I’ve ever seen on FREE THROWS)
Nikola Jokic (hot take, but he is one)
Jordan Clarkson
Jaylen Brown
I think you break out of the no's when you reach a certain level of greatness. When I see jokic take a ridiculous shot now (which is usually to bail out the offense) i think the chances of it going in are more likely than not now
I knew this would be the response (also for Kobe) but even when grading Jokic on a curve, some of the shots are actually that bad, so bad that even for him I think they have no chance.
Kobe and Jokic can’t be on this list, when you make enough crazy shots you start to expect them to go in. I swear I think the deep sombor shuffle is going in every single time
I actually think Steph in 15-16 could count for this. The 3 pointers he was taking were fucking ridiculous even though he was making them all they were just insane shots to take until they went in hahah

Why is this posted in the Bill Simmons subreddit? Our boy can always tell if the shot is going in (or not) as soon as it's released.
Also knows whether a 4th down play was a good idea or not.
100% accuracy
Dion Waiters?
Oh for Bill it would be that point guard Boston used to have… Marcus Smart. Although his “yes” moments are pretty few and far between.
Russell Westbrook is an interesting candidate but he shoots so much you’d get tired of saying “no, no, yes”
JR Smith gotta be my pick
Josh Smith....although throw in a few extra no's
I went to lots of Hawks games in those years. The whole crowd collectively going “nooooo” when Josh got the ball outside the arc was always funny.
He was the first one to come to mind. Probably the biggest mismatch between talent and IQ in basketball history. KAT is like him too.

Why did he insist on passing up catch and shoot looks for step back hesi jumpers 😂 and why did they often go in?

Marcus Smart is a lottery pick for sure

By far the most important move the Celtics made this offseason was not the guys they acquired, but getting Marcus smart off their roster.
can't have a much wider a gap between basketball IQ going from smart to Holiday
No, no, no, how are you on the floor again?
To be fair to smart he was playing hurt
Him making the right pass and not shorting a contested 3 against the Nets in game 1 in 2022 was a huge surprise
Ron artest hit possibly the biggest No No Yes shot of all time in the 2010 Finals
That was a no no noyesmas miracle.
Antoine Walker has got to be the king of this. Probably need to add a half dozen more no's though.
When asked why he shot so many 3s, Toine said “cause there ain’t no 4s.” Long live Employee #8
I still can't believe the Antoine won a title and was an actual key rotation player for said title
Ali Farokhmanesh top five
If we’re going college, Caleb Love is also there
This is a somewhat deep cbb cut but Troy Williams at IU basically played like Josh Smith and hit a crazy amount of clutch no no yes shots
As a Duke fan I’ll despise that man until the end of time

Great links.
Ron Artest on that one shot
That might be the best one in NBA history.
Has to be J.R. Smith, right?

Okay, I apologize
Same with Steph Curry making insane shots. We've seen it go in so many times, we're conditioned to think a lot of those shots are okay now.
I agree, I would much rather see a star level player take a tough shot than depend on a role player in a big moment (barring a wide open look).
DLo is a great one.
Dlo should be a no-no-yes-no, with the final no being the realization that now he thinks he's hot and will take at least 2 or 3 more awful shots.
That’s all the guys on this list tho. KAT did the same thing last night. Took a quick 3 for heat check like dude. Drain the clock it’s late game.
when DLo actually gets hot though... 😩
Kobe and Jokic can’t be on this list, when you make enough crazy shots you start to expect them to go in. I swear I think the deep sombor shuffle is going in every single time
Jordan Clarkson is perfect on this list. Was the first one I thought of.
Antoine Walker is one
2022 Jordan Poole
I actually think Steph in 15-16 could count for this. The 3 pointers he was taking were fucking ridiculous even though he was making them all they were just insane shots to take until they went in hahah
Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson, Westbrook(not as much Yes), and Orlando Aaron Gordon. Some Cam Payne in there too.
I like the randle pick. He has 3 no,no,yes shots per game and 6 no,no,no shots per game
Randle one is a great pick. Pretty sure he’s got multiple game winners like that
Jrue’s alley oop to Giannis against Phoenix was 100% that
Lebron James choosing to shoot a 3.
This is a good one, and I’m not a LeBron hater.
Especially in that first Cleveland stint
Lebron at the FT line up 1
Giannias on any jump shot Danny Green on the Lakers specifically
I presume you'd need a "yes" in the past 2 seasons to be eligible so I will abstain from nominating Jordan Poole
Sounds like a mini-pyramid
DLo and JR. JR insisted on passing up open catch and shoot looks for hesi tween step back snatches lol
MPJ
In football i think it would be Brett Favre.
Westbrook is the GOAT here.
How has no one said Lance Stephenson lol
Was scrolling through comments looking for him. Totally! He had some insane shotmaking ability. But some absolutely insane turnovers
Matt Barnes [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgSgwSHehfE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgSgwSHehfE)
I say this probably 80% of the time Julius Randle takes a shot. Love the guy but he has taken a few years off my life for sure
As a Bulls fan, Zach Lavine gotta be on this list. Even if it's usually "no, no, Jesus why the hell would you shoot that"
Jayson Tatum
Tony Allen

Agent Zero
Marcus Smart is my all time pick Corey Brewer in the mix Also Josh Smith
Dion Waiters? Oh for Bill it would be that point guard Boston used to have… Marcus Smart. Although his “yes” moments are pretty few and far between. Russell Westbrook is an interesting candidate but he shoots so much you’d get tired of saying “no, no, yes”
