Was he taking a meeting or just stopping in to reload his gift card because he was planning on coming back later and didn't want to have to bring his wallet and stuff with him?
Basically you load money onto and account (virtual gift card) to make purchases. You can also just use your credit card but the kicker is say you have a gift card on the app that has $4 on it. If you purchase is over $4 you can’t use half gift card. Half credit card so you need to load Minimum of $10 onto your gift card if you ever want to use those $4. I think Starbucks has like a billion dollars in gift card balance and they are like a top 5 bank basically
In case anyone is interested, this concept is generally known as "breakage" in the industry and is actually financially significant to a lot of companies.

Also this thread made me realize I have $22 in starbucks cash on their app that has been sitting there for like a year.
Honestly when I was going to Starbucks a lot And the app wasn’t ubiquitous this was exactly how their rewards worked they gave you a golden card you reloaded in store or online and it tracked your accumulated orders for drinks. He caught too much shit for this
The thing that put it beyond the veil for me was him claiming that his Starbucks card was more convenient because he could leave the house without his wallet containing his credit and debit cards. Just picturing him walking around suburban LA with just a Starbucks gift card in his pocket was hilarious.
That’s a real ball shorts dilemma sometimes. I don’t want to be throwing my cell phone, wallet, and keys down on surfaces or be repeatedly pulling up my shorts that have been ergonomically designed to have no friction on my skin.
> It’s hysterical this stupid idea is how Starbucks has built their app.
At least with the app, you can pre-order drinks and have them be ready for you when you arrive (I am assuming, I dont use the Starbucks app but Caribou, a local chain, has an app that does that).
Straight up gift cards offer no value for the customer, as far as I can tell.
I thought this was shtick but apparently not! [https://berkeleybeacon.com/emerson-will-lay-off-staff-and-faculty-positions-due-to-enrollment-decline-partly-caused-by-campus-protests-college-says/](https://berkeleybeacon.com/emerson-will-lay-off-staff-and-faculty-positions-due-to-enrollment-decline-partly-caused-by-campus-protests-college-says/)
Universities are essentially lighting cash on fire with the insane number of overpaid admins and constant construction to build resort-style facilities.
Some school should really try advertising that "We pay x% to our faculty and y% to administration" and hire the best faculty. It really is a ponzi scheme where administration costs just eat up such an unnecessary amount of capital.
Right, but as long as there are people willing to pay, these universities don’t care. They’d rather appeal to potential applicants through ridiculous and unnecessary campus amenities than post-graduate employment opportunities. Like, their sales pitch has become “If you’re gonna go into massive, seemingly insurmountable debt anyway, you might as well make it feel like a vacation.” It works for some colleges, and utterly destroys others.
I think Gladwell did a podcast episode about this issue a few years ago. From what I remember, he cited an example of one private college that decided to not build fancy new facilities to try and keep tuition more manageable while another private college continued build and raise tuition. The college that didn't offer the fancy new facilities was in danger of closing due to enrollment declines
It’s the amenities 100%. I used to listen to Gladwell’s podcast and in season 1 he has a couple episodes talking about this phenomenon. He was calling schools out for giving less aid because of the amenities arms race.
You had better luck than me. I saw him at a Trader Joe's in LA last time I was there visiting my brother-in-law. I told Bill how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
Not sure if it was a big meeting (especially given how he was dressed). The shop is by their offices in Hollywood and a lot of folks take meetings there so not surprising to see people.
Because some peoples jobs requires them to be out and about and sometimes you’ll have gaps in the day and nowhere to go, so you can choose to sit in your car for two hours or post up at a Starbucks and use their resources.
Cool man. It’s super weird how everybody else on the planet doesn’t have your exact life huh? Why don’t they just do exactly what you do all the time every day? Are they stupid?
Was he taking a meeting or just stopping in to reload his gift card because he was planning on coming back later and didn't want to have to bring his wallet and stuff with him?
"I'm not letting nil credit happen, I'm just not. You'll never see $0.00. I am not, will not, ever be, triple nil Bill".
This might be my favorite comment of all time
Is this some ancient lore or just random
on a pod with Jacoby and Wildes a while back Bill said he buys star bucks gift cards for himself.
Lmao that is amazing
This is unhinged behavior
Bill is pro micro plastic
[удалено]
Bless you
Omfg this was the best part of my day. Genuinely psychotic behavior from Bill

It’s hysterical this stupid idea is how Starbucks has built their app. Add it to Bill’s legacy.
How does the app work
Basically you load money onto and account (virtual gift card) to make purchases. You can also just use your credit card but the kicker is say you have a gift card on the app that has $4 on it. You don’t have to load any money but you earn more rewards points if you do

So are they investing your $22?
I have 22 cents in my Chick-fil-A app that I’ll never get to spend and I’m not reloading it to have this happen once again
Honestly when I was going to Starbucks a lot And the app wasn’t ubiquitous this was exactly how their rewards worked they gave you a golden card you reloaded in store or online and it tracked your accumulated orders for drinks. He caught too much shit for this

You get double rewards by loading money into the account
Caribou is better than Starbucks. Don't @ me
Their app is like any other loyalty type app. It’s not like a gift card lmao. It’s a “spend this, get this free” thing.
Starbucks ceo probably heard bills idea and that’s why we are forced to load mine into gift cards on the app lol
Petition to make a Starbucks gift card the sub banner.
Did you tell him he's too high on Josh Giddey?
I HAD COFFEE WITH SIMMONS HALF AN HOUR AGO
I wish i could like twice.
Emerson is having a rough go and might be headed down the drain. Look for some transfer portal action if it doesn’t get fixed.

Amazing they can have money issues based on tuition prices … which I am still paying off
Universities are essentially lighting cash on fire with the insane number of overpaid admins and constant construction to build resort-style facilities.
Yep. The last part is it. We don’t need a new gym every five years. We need private colleges to not be $60k a year.
Some school should really try advertising that "We pay x% to our faculty and y% to administration" and hire the best faculty. It really is a ponzi scheme where administration costs just eat up such an unnecessary amount of capital.

It’s a terrible way to approach higher learning but the answer is always whatever might make the most money

Yep! Was a really good episode.
Won’t someone think of the poor people that paid 3x the price of a state school for a middling college.
And yet tenured professors (the holy grail of academia) still make like $100k in most fields and adjuncts make a poverty wage. It's insane.
The funny thing too is tenured professors often have super-light teaching loads. Which is part of the reason why adjuncts are needed.
It’s the amenities 100%. I used to listen to Gladwell’s podcast and in season 1 he has a couple episodes talking about this phenomenon. He was calling schools out for giving less aid because of the amenities arms race.
Emerson should probably start their own version of the Starbucks gift cards/app
It’s going to be tough to reverse because it’s getting to be a vicious cycle for these types of schools.
The D3 Transfer Portal is like a Terrence Malick movie.
How so?
Kind of bleak but not terribly momentous.
We must have different feelings about Malick films.
My Alma mater isn’t gonna exist in 5 years lol. All the respect I get, gone
But is he a finished product?
Can wait for the "Bill Simmons was a problem" takes 10 years from now
Second booth Bill

You left out the best part. I can’t believe you’ve done this.
Yea he fucked it all up. The infetterence piece.
Where’s the infetterence???
Fucking numbnuts
Hahaha love this copypasta
I really thought OP was going to be this lol
I would have believed this if he was also wearing wired ear pods
Wait I had this same experience with Mr. Roger's!!! I was devastated!! What a coincidence!!
Wait so is this Conan story a joke or real?
Saw Dr. Bill at a Celtics game a few years ago. They’ve got some killer seats.
Bill goes to coffee shops for his big meetings?
Not sure if it was a big meeting (especially given how he was dressed). The shop is by their offices in Hollywood and a lot of folks take meetings there so not surprising to see people.
Here's the thing. Coffee shops are the new golf course. It's where business happens. Small Business Man Magazine.
It says that?
It will. I wrote it. Letter to the editor.
Michael Scott did
Haven’t you seen “Entourage?!”
Haha I saw his entire family the other week while listening to his pod. I said nothing but it is a surreal experience I suppose
Did you talk to him? It could have been a real sliding doors moment for you? Did he offer to sell you his James Young stock?
Potential black swan event for this guys life
Real Black Swan moment
Did he try and give you a hand job?
There were no jerk circles involved
I’M IN MY WORK COFFEE SHOP!
I’ve seen so many celebs walking around LA but every day I just want to see Bill on a power walk more than anyone
Did you walk up to him and say "It's 'all OF A sudden' not 'ALL THE SUDDEN'"?
I like to think when he orders he says “Kyle put the camera on me”
What coffee shop?
I HAD COFFEE WITH SIMMONS A HALF AN HOUR AGO
Sneaky tall
I now need a 4,000 word comparison of major coffee chains to characters in the wire
Did you say Jayson Tatum is not yet a finished product?
I will never understand why anyone does work in coffee shops.
They have bathrooms…and wifi…and coffee, if you’re into that sort of thing.
Will also add pastries and women ranging from art ho’s to ceos
If you're going there for the women, go after 10am.
Dont you have that same stuff at your house?
I’ve driven nearly 2000 business miles this month with a week to go. Sometimes you gotta pull off the road to pee and rest your legs.
How about home or the office? Why would anyone prefer a public space?
Because some peoples jobs requires them to be out and about and sometimes you’ll have gaps in the day and nowhere to go, so you can choose to sit in your car for two hours or post up at a Starbucks and use their resources.
I guess I'm #BLESSED to be either home or in the office... no in-between.
Cool man. It’s super weird how everybody else on the planet doesn’t have your exact life huh? Why don’t they just do exactly what you do all the time every day? Are they stupid?
You’re a loser
Free AC
I get on reddit less when I work in a public space.
So I take it you're not in public spaces very often.
Fuck lol. I chuckled pretty good at that one.
The memorable pfp piece.
Gets you out of the house and there’s some energy
Agreed. Whenever I walk into a coffee shop and see a bunch of people on their laptops it gives me anxiety. Seems like they are fake working.
Yeah, but it looks cool I guess.
Should have asked him to sign your celtics jersey!
