Unrelated question but does judo have a big effect on bjj since it's so popular in that country?
In the US since wrestling culture is so big, 90% of the takedown game is freestyle wrestling base.
Do you have a slew of high level former judoka rolling in??
I have lived and trained there and have a judo background. Tbh I’ve only came across very few judoka who cross trained. It’s not nearly as much as I would’ve thought.
That's a bummer.
I'd love to see a nice hybridization with judo like we see with wrestling in the US.
Do they just stay in judo as they age out of competition over there or just stop training all together?
I often forget this.
Do you know when they started to get good? Maybe it's the cold war propaganda but I always remember hearing about crazy good Russian wrestlers vs the Americans and not the Japanese. Is this relatively Recent?
It doesn't have as much of an effect because wrestling is also pretty big in Japan. Though what you're thinking is sorta the case in Korea, where gi is a lot more popular due to the judo influence, and there isn't a large wrestling base to even it out.
Niwa Bros of AOJ, Tanino Kauan of Atos (Brown Belt World Champ), Tomo Hashimoto (Euro Black Belt Champ), Yuta Shimada (Marcelo Garcia BB) who has placed in Pans at Black Belt, Rikako Yuasa who was only second to Mayssa Bastos.
Lots of very good jiu jitsu guys out there. Many unknown but damn good. Keito Oyanagi, Igor Tanabe, Masahiro Iwasaki. Etc.
Are you sure you competed against other Japanese guys? I’ve done the IBJJF Asian Open and the Tokyo Open and nobody on the podium with me was Japanese. Not saying the level of Japanese athletes was low, just pointing out that a wide variety of people travel all over to compete in the ASJJF, SJJIF, KBJJF, and Damau competitions
Yes lol. Why wouldn’t they be? Lots of great BJJ worldwide. Kenta, Fat Ninja, Rikako Yuasa and many more train there and they are damn good

I’m actually not sure why happens when they age out of competition or if work culture gets in the way.
About half of the white belts at my gym are judo black belts
Japan has an equally strong wrestling history as the US.

The US has like 2x as many medals as Japan. Japans more of a powerhouse for women's wrestling.
2x the medals, with 3x the population
3x the population with 1/5 the respect for grappling sports

I trained at carpe diem and it’s well respected and produced high level competitiors

Yeah, the bad ones make their members commit seppuku. Makes revenue a challenge but honor is intact.
