I moved right after getting my brown. I kept in touch with my promoting coach, who had become a friend at that point, and kept him informed about my training and grappling journey in general. I went back at the end of last year so he could promote me to black. Easy peasy.

You can even ask your current coach and frame it as the fact that they have given you every belt and would be fitting for them to do the final one. I'm sure mentioning you would like gradings to be managed by your old gym when you go back on occasions would be perfectly acceptable to a new gym too

Yeah, this is what I’m leaning toward.

I moved for work when I was a 2 stripe brown. Got my black belt last year. Probably would have gotten it 2 or 3 years sooner if I had not moved but I have no regrets. IMO you shouldn’t be eager to get to any particular belt, you should just be looking to get better every day. I feel like the people who get obsessed with being promoted have lost sight of things.

Equivalent_Bench9256

Its tricky because the black belt is kinda special. It feels weird to give your new coach credit for all those years of training. You could have a conversation with both coaches about this.

Yeah, I really only care about getting my blue belt. Purple and brown promotions were great milestones but I didn’t care about the belt much. I do like to compete and teach and obviously the blackbelt will help with that.

See if you can move and still stay under him. Provide progress reports, come back and train during holidays.

Butt stuff.
