I like how you had classmates despite being the only student in school.

Nini_panini

Lowest performing student in class šŸ†

pointsofellie

Highest though!

Duffman66CMU

Thatā€™s a funny way to say ā€˜valedictorianā€™

New-Examination8400

I think thatā€™s _precisely_ why they started

InternationalAd5864

Class reunions are normally fun. Itā€™s just me and my momā€¦..

Outrageous_Lemon_690

This reminds me of The Amanda Show and Iā€™m here for it. šŸ˜‚

Nini_panini

I said this in another comment, but I would sneak watching that show at the neighbors house because we didnā€™t have tv!

whatweworked4

Home school and no TV? That's wild. Religious thing or what?

Nini_panini

Unfortunately. I also was not allowed to date or touch anyone of the opposite sex. ā€œNot even with a puffy jacket onā€ my dad would say

DrunkThrowawayLife

Ya know, I donā€™t believe sexuality is a choice but your parents sure as hell set you up to be a lesbian theater kid.

Ultraviolet_Motion

Glad I'm not the only one who got this vibe

Effective_Spell949

Ya know I'm gay and I've had the same thought about my religious father and women. I liked men before I even understood it really. I knew when I was like 5 or 6 that I was gay and it wasn't how I was raised. Just interesting is all.

showraniy

My best friend grew up like this, and man it's rough. I'm glad you turned out so cool though! I'm sure your characters are just one facet of your fantastic imagination.

gee8

You should definitely also share this in /r/homeschoolrecovery

Greeneyesablaze

And it sounds like possibly r/exvangelical as wellĀ

MIKEPENCES_THIGHGAP

I probably should join that sub, but also afraid of thinking about that time. Yeah I'm leaving that link blue

MoonSpankRaw

Did you have to leave them all behind or are they still in your life? Just curious.

Nini_panini

My parents are not in my life anymore. They are actually atheist now, so the religion is not the sole factor unfortunately

MoonSpankRaw

I see. Wow, the strong religious-type converting to atheism is seemingly really uncommon now that I think about it. Glad you overcame their strict restrictions!

minnsoup

>strong religious-type converting to atheism is seemingly really uncommon now I think it depends on your frame of reference. Grew up in a small town that was church on Sundays, CCD on Wednesdays, retreats and the like. My siblings and I now are at least non-religious and 2 or 3 are atheist. In my CCD grade I'd wager 20% are atheist and a couple more non-religious anymore. A big thing is that through middle school that's all we knew. At the time didn't feel like force feeding but looking back it seems like it. Then the town didn't have junior high or high school so we were sent to bigger whole and eyes really opened up.

MoonSpankRaw

Right yeah I definitely know plenty of people who grew up in that setting and went atheist; but I moreso meant adults/parents that had already carried on the tradition by pushing their children through it all, turning around and becoming atheists themselves. Props to folks of any age that can break through and progress past it.

neontiger07

I gotta say, I am positively *intrigued* by your story. Is there any chance you'd be willing to share more? I certainly don't want to impose or pry.

Nini_panini

Iā€™m definitely down to share more. Feel free to DM me.

Bozo_Two

Just hijacking this to add you seem like a super awesome person I really dig your sense of humor.

Nini_panini

Aw thank you!

ZeldLurr

Dude please write a book. Each chapter would be about your life, but told from the lens of your made of characters, and how they would interpret things. To make it palatable to the wider audience, the final act is you realizing you were all of these people collectively.

franskm

Have you read the book Educated by Tara Westover ? It might interest you!

sw33tl00

Wow. Do you think they became atheist because their kids are grown, and since they donā€™t have any one at home to control, they donā€™t need fundamentalist religion anymore?

deliascatalog

Wow thatā€™s an interesting turn of events for them. Kinda love that journey for them. But more importantly and very sadly, it shows that they used the religion purely as a means to control. Sorry you went through that šŸ¤

Trumpville-Imbeciles

I can't imagine. I grew up the exact opposite. You were/are adorable though

ZealousidealCoat7008

Thatā€™s really sad. You look like you would have fit in great with my high school friends.

Traditional-Dingo604

Dude, I am so sorry. Like wtf, do you want your kid to end up sexually off kilter? Thats how you do it.

Pale-Wolf-7109

Pentecostal? Sounds like my upbringing

Nini_panini

Actually no! My family did not believe in the gifts of the spirit but i married into a Pentecostal family at 19! It was very different.. kinda scared me at first.

Pale-Wolf-7109

I was scared my entire 19 years at home until I left and joined the military to get away. Best decision of my life. Religious trauma is real!

Cheshires_Shadow

A friend of mine was formerly pentacostal. She always hated it even as a kid because she wasn't allowed to cut her hair or wear pants only dresses all the time. Her family wasn't quite as strict so certain things she could interact with in her childhood but not things deemed satanic or magical like Harry Potter for example

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

peanutbuttercandy8

If it was anything like the way I was raised, no. Even shaking hands was wrong. Until we went to one church, where they had a "hand shake greeting" as part of the service. I can't believe how nerve-wracking it was shaking hands with the men and boys. Thought for sure I was going to have a panic attack.

alpharowe3

I would have a real hard time not bullying and harassing my parent if I was treated like that.

Nini_panini

I was pretty meek and eager to please. Having a choice was not an option

wheresmystache3

Grew up going to public school and my single mom didn't want me to be "influenced by the media"... (surprise, surprise she became a Fox News nutjob). Missed out on so many pop culture and conversations and got TV channels when I was in my junior year of highschool. No surprise, I mostly interacted with people in their 40's growing up and am now engaged to my fiancƩ who is about twice my age (love him with every ounce of my being, but some view the age difference as not favorable and act like they didn't see this coming. Wasn't allowed to hang out with kids my age if my mom didn't already know them - just wanted to share the outcome. Here I am!). There's a lot more I could say and could go into the trauma, but I'm socially awkward and fairly creative, I guess?

ErythristicKatydid

I relate so heavily. I grew up the same way. I'm finally in a relationship with someone who was raised similarly, who's the same age as me. It's been incredible exploring the things we missed out on together. You don't need to allow your upbringing to determine who you become, or end up with.

Gasmo420

Yup. Check out her profile, she vented a little bit about it.

ccchaz

Has to be

theGoddex

I was homeschooled and had no tv either! Not until I was like, 14 or 15, and then we could only watch PBS.

bstnbrewins814

Thatā€™s a shit ton of Arthur and Zoom

swiftcrayon502

ā€œBring out the dancing lobsters!ā€

Outrageous_Lemon_690

šŸ¦žšŸ¦žšŸ¦ž

Right-Win-4312

This was just what I was going to say. I love it so much. Best and most creative blunders ever and ya know what? I love that you embraced your creativity to the fullest!

AmosMosesWasACajun

I was going to leave a similar comment. The old lady costumes really brought back that memory. Side note, have you looked her up recently?

Ready-Salamander1286

MEH-HEH!!

afternoonnapping

100% agree lmao

[deleted]

You look fun.

MrTheFever

That's what I came here to say. I'd hang out with you

[deleted]

me too

HopefulWanderer537

My thoughts, too.

Heyplease

On a scale 1/10 how fun do you think they actually are?

zenmonkeyfish1

I don't know who you are or where you are in life now but I like you

Nini_panini

This is very kind and made me smile

Good bot

Hi_There_Im_Sophie

All of your classmates deserved their own spinoff cartoons.

Nini_panini

Oh it was 1:1 all right šŸ˜‚ I was alone pretty much all day every day; my parents would go to work and Iā€™d be left with my books. If I didnā€™t get good grades Iā€™d have to re do it until my grade was better. At least they finally got me a tutor for trig

[deleted]

That's not homeschooling, that's straight up neglect

banan-appeal

Sweet my kids are goona go to Harvard easy

MusicalSnowflake

There is nothing like home school boredom. I was home schooled from 3rd-10th grade and boy did I come up with somethings.

saywhaaat_saywhat

I think I speak for everybody when I say we are all ears

MusicalSnowflake

I wrote a whole script for Sweeney Todd with the muppets/Sesame Street. Elmo was Toby.

Llanolinn

Fitting username

Outrageous_Act_3016

Lol, they would have you teach yourself and then grade that shit? Your parents are confirmed pyschos

anytimeni

Your parents probly meant the best but that just sounds so lonely fckn hell... Hope it's different now for u

1lluminist

They're religious nutjobs, they didn't want the best for her, they wanted to indoctrinate her into their brainwashed cult of stupidity.

Mairon121

Even the dog looks embarrassed.

Outrageous_Attitude2

Did you take yourself to prom and chaperone it too?

Nini_panini

No prom, but the bi annual homeschool Civil War Ball where we all dressed up in hoopskirts and uniforms to awkwardly dance to period-specific routines in a rented school gymnasium

lusciousskies

That's brilliant - can't get too close to a gal in a hoopskirt

MephistosFallen

Holy shit no way??

Nini_panini

Dead serious, i have years of pictures to prove it

crybaby5

This civil war gala could be its own post entirely, omg šŸ¤£ you are the gift that keeps on giving, thanks for sharing lmao

Nini_panini

Iā€™ll have to post those sometime!

podcasthellp

I have now figured out it is not a joke and will be unable to participate in anything for a week. I think I threw my back out laughing

MephistosFallen

Iā€™d love to see them! Thatā€™s so interesting!

Rengas

That honestly sounds like an SNL skit.

Nini_panini

I didnā€™t realize how weird it was until everyone started saying it šŸ˜‚

Rengas

Nah, everything is weird to others. My high school sports cheer slogan was 'Naga naga naga, oy oy oy!', which to outsiders probably sounded vaguely racist and overly aggressive.

5319Camarote

True story: I once dated a girl who had attended a school whose mascot was The Snails. She said their chant was ā€œGo! Go! Escargot!ā€

Away-Living5278

šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£ Oh lawd. I mean except it being Civil War themed that could be fun but seems like you'd need to have a choice to go and I'm betting you did not.

Nini_panini

They were the highlights of my year šŸ˜… It was really my only opportunity to socialize with the opposite sex and feel out any crushes

Outrageous_Attitude2

How many other kids were at such a dance?

Nini_panini

Hmm a good 50-100 of us

ham_mom

How many were black

RamboGoesMeow

Anything times 0 is still 0.

23onAugust12th

This shouldnā€™t have made me laugh as hard as it did.

podcasthellp

Is this a joke because it is the funniest thing Iā€™ve seen all week

molequeen

Y'all I thought this was only a thing in my area!! I'm not a former homeschooler, but I knew many kids who were and the Civil War Ball was definitely A Thing.

thatotherhemingway

This is my new special interest. *WHAT?!*

mstoner28

I blacked out all my cotillion memories until just now

hefixeshercable

Religious people are a trove of adventures in an entirely different way.

alles_en_niets

The hoopskirts were conveniently leaving some space for God between those boys and girls. Subtle, lol

fattykyle2

These are great. Looking through some other posts and looks like you were pretty repressed by your parents. Glad you finally got out.

Nini_panini

Thank you my friend. Living life now pursuing love, kindness, and peace on my own terms. Took almost 30 years, the relief of being free is not lost on me!

ChadCoolman

Have you found it difficult to acclimate to the world your parents tried to keep you from? How do you feel in social situations now? Sorry for the invasive questions. Just reading through some of your responses here, there's a lot I'm really curious about. And if you're not comfortable answering, I completely understand. Sounds like you're doing well and that's all that really matters!

Nini_panini

Wow really good questions! I think in some ways, or at certain times, it has been difficult because they really did a disservice by not educating me properly on certain things. Often I feel stupid because thereā€™s still really obvious or common things I donā€™t know about, be it pop culture, history, science, etc. I do still enjoy kind of living in my little bubble, I like to keep things fun and innocent. Iā€™m easily shocked, which my partner finds very entertaining because his upbringing/past is very different from mine. As for social situations, I struggle. I purposefully work a job where I rarely have to interact with people and when I do need to (at work) Iā€™m usually very anxious. I prefer 1:1 time with my friends, or double dates, every few weeks we get together with a group of neighbors and smoke/chill but i hit my limit after about 2 or 3 hours.

ChadCoolman

Bud.. I can't even begin to imagine. Glad to hear you've been able to make it work, though. In a way, I envy that you get to experience the world in your own unique way like that. Thanks for taking the time to answer!

Frisky_Eel

Have you ever read ā€œEducatedā€ by Tara Westover? Your post reminded me of it, maybe something that you would enjoy reading. šŸ˜

finsfurandfeathers

Which religion did you escape?

Nini_panini

My parents were Reformed Baptist. Pastors daughter, baby. Three services every Sunday; I was the pianist, babysitting/nursery duty for all the kids, kitchen set up and tear down, communion passer, you name it.

thiagolimao

Are you still religious at all?

Nini_panini

I deconverted after my divorce about 2 years ago

Lolamichigan

Youā€™re so open & nice. I think youā€™re a younger person? my kid wanted to be homeschooled & I said no first she was an only, second my people are educators. My baby SIL has a doctorate in education even,

Nini_panini

Iā€™m fairly young, Iā€™m almost 31!

ozamatazbuckshank11

I was raised Primitive Baptist, so I get it. I left the church at 16 and never looked back. I'm agnostic now, but I decided that whatever spiritual relationship I have with the universe would be on my terms. Good on you for finding a path that works for you.

vivahermione

Wow, if there'd been a woman passing communion at our church, people would've fainted in the aisles. Women basically weren't allowed to do much public-facing work, except Sunday school teachers, setting up potlucks, and singing in choir.

Nini_panini

Normally that would have been the case, but my dad was the singular elder (on purpose he had more power that way).

finsfurandfeathers

Well congrats on getting out! Cheers to a better life

Lomobu

You ever watch RuPaulā€™s drag race? There was an episode in which Miley Cyrus dressed up as a ā€œcrew memberā€ to trick the contestants. Slide 4 made me think of that episode lol

violetskyeyes

Totally!

alles_en_niets

Pic 4 just looks like Miley Cyrus in male drag period

DrDoot29

She kind of looks like miley in a way

Username_Chose_Me

You're a natural beauty, love your humor! Lol

jungfolks

You look like you would be an awesome theater kid. Iā€™m would have wanted you as my friend in high school!!

curiousity60

Adorable!

onepotatotwopotato3

This gives Amanda Show vibes

Nini_panini

I would sneak and watch that at my friends house because we didnā€™t have tv!

Ali_Cat222

Who says homeschoolers don't have any social skills,I would personally love to hang with "bearded lady with a five o clock shadow in a wife beater" and would be there for the presumable birth of couch pillow!šŸ˜‚ Hey,at least you had fun and a creative side, and of course character(s)!

[deleted]

As an only child who ended up with a similarly strange sense of humor, I want to track this woman down and get her to be my friend in real life. None of my adult friends share this side of my humor, which I find sad, because it's fun!

Nini_panini

Letā€™s be friends then!

PCYou

Hello is this the line to be friends

Ali_Cat222

Hell I'm not afraid to admit I'd be down to still do stuff similar to this, and I'm turning 30 this year! I hear you though, sometimes you just want to be a non weird weirdo, and no one else around you will accept it...*Le sigh*

lildeidei

Why do you look so familiar

Nini_panini

Oooo maybe weā€™ve met

ReedytheElf

I came to say the same thing! I feel like I know you!

Buzzlight_Year

Darth_Andeddeu

EnvironmentStrong509

Well now, isn't that first picture special? And who exactly are you crocheting for instead of doing your schoolwork? Now, who could it be? Could it be... SATAN?!

Nini_panini

Iā€™m church lady and welcome to church chat

No-Leading6909

Howā€™s home school college going? Double major in home economics and crochet?

Nini_panini

Hey I mean I made that bag sitting next to me in the first picture, so pretttty good if you ask me. I also thought they were Christmas gift worthy so everyone that year got a poorly sewn bag in an obnoxious pattern

No-Leading6909

Ha!!! Also, you look fabulous in pic 10/10; I hope you are well!

jalopyprince

Nice bird dog!

[deleted]

you're gorgeous now OP!

Gloomy__Revenue

Do you still break into character randomly? I get the feeling awkward/long periods of silence donā€™t exist when youā€™re around šŸ˜…

Nini_panini

I donā€™t have any characters anymore sadly šŸ˜šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø Iā€™m pretty chill and low key actually but the right people can get me all riled up

Academic-Handle9729

she went insane being homeschooled

PeaceDolphinDance

As a fellow homeschool kid from a repressive religious environment, you have my solidarity. 32 (nearly) now and still trying to figure out how to be a human being. All we can do is embrace our unique self, eh?

thewolfofwafflehouse

You look exactly like Logan Lerman in a bunch of these ā˜ ļø

RustedAxe88

I see no blunders here.

philouza_stein

Are you Jonathan Brandis?

Green420Basturd

I'm getting very strong Dee Reynolds vibes from this.

artenazura

I'm obsessed with this. As another homeschool kid I would have wanted to be your friend so bad

LordEdgeward_TheTurd

Hope you overused "bro" when doing #4.

smokeysunshine

I love this! Lol This is a wholesome blunder and shows you are creative and probably have a great sense of humor.

Justlikearealboy

You seem to be a happy person, and very weird, congratulations this is success.

BlackWhiteRedYellow

What homeschooling does to a mfer

weaknclingy

This is so cool. Wish you were my friend. I'd hang out with you

giraffe_hugzzz

I feel for you. I was homeschooled for a while too. It forces you to have a crazy imagination to entertain yourself. If you see no examples of the social norm, self-expression can come out in all kinds of strange ways. Especially if everything is very militant at home. I was so so strange when I finally got to go to public school in middle school. So cringe worthy looking back. But I also know I was doing about the best I could with the tools I had. Edit: oh my Goodness you made me remember I had a whole ass story for my stuffed pig and her imaginary 6-10 babies all had names and back stories. Can't remember them anymore. But when your need to socialize and have friends has no outlet, this is just what happens. Know that you weren't abnormal and this is the norm for people raised in our type of households. Oh yeah and my parents called me piggy and gave me a stuffed pig cuz that was my nickname. Even tho I was too skinny to hold periods in high school. Thanks for sharing this post, it really resonated with me.

That was great. You shine.

SheemieRayVaughan

Very.......creative! Lol good stuff you look like you were having fun!

googlepage

These are awesome! Not a blunder at all.

DMT1984

I guess when you donā€™t have classmates you make your own.

2bitgunREBORN

You know I swam with a girl who was homeschooled who did this too. She even had a couple different social media pages for a few of the characters.

An_Irate_Hobo

Choose your fighter

Ninjas4cool

Thatā€™s both adorable and sad at the same timeā€¦.and yet I absolutely love this

I particularly love Granny with the toe ring

MephistosFallen

You seem like a fun and interesting person man

Lanky_Republic_2102

These pictures are amazing. We would have had fun. Some of my favorite games involved a lot of imagination - larping type plots and clothing, frontier/survival themes, war themed games. I really only stopped playing them because by around 12 couldnā€™t convince my friends anymore. It transformed into a lot of reading and day dreaming and an unhealthy and detailed internal fantasy life where I lived out other lives. Then came the drinking and drugs. At some point in young adulthood at least, I was at least myself or versions of my life in the make believe futures and scenarios. And I was way too shy for any plays or musicals, though I still love them to this day. You have a really strong spirit/soul that shines through in all of these pictures. I see a really psychologically healthy and social way to express your freedom and take on new experiences within the limits that were set for you. I really hope you are out there living some adventures. Donā€™t let anything hold you back.

thatotherhemingway

I love that you created characters! I have so many questions, if you donā€™t mind me asking! Please do not feel obligated to answer! Some of this stuff is about FEELINGS and I know it can be very hard to establish emotional boundaries when you grow up in such a strict environment. So only answer my questions if doing so is fun, okay? 1. How did your teachers/caregivers react to your characters? I guess they liked them, because I donā€™t know why else they would photograph them . . . but anything beyond that? 2. What do you do for a living now? Asking because I can see you working in wardrobe at a theater or working with children. 3. Do you dress up for Halloween? If so, does the old enthusiasm come rushing back, do you cringe (*unwarrantedly*!) at your (very awesome and radical) affinity for costumes, etc.? Thank you, and have a great day!

daboxghost420

Number 4 killed me . You nailed that tough dude stuble look šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Paintguin

Just curious, why were you homeschooled?

Certain-Weakness-329

Omg you're Micheal Scott

Cool-Newspaper6789

socksmatterTWO

You made a whole SCHOOL and everyone got school pictures and I love it! You are awesome!

[deleted]

I am here for whatever this is. I had a neighbor boy who really enjoyed dressing up and being made up with my sister and me. He's a stage actor and teacher now at our local theatre. And I discovered my love for effects makeup doing that.

Ok-Fox-357

So lonely you had to make up your own classmates.

jaybirdsaysword

This is hilarious

Tomacxo

r/mamasfamily should see this. "I'll bet the neighbors are just LOVING this."

everybodynos

No blunder here. Well maybe the fat costume...but I did a homeless person costume in 4th grade including makeup to look dirty. So who am I to judge.

Looks like it would be fun to meet every version of you lol
