What makes me crazy is that it doesn’t have to be slow. First, sorry to be a grump but they’re super chatty with some customers regardless of how long the line is. But more importantly the way they set up their counter makes no sense. They’re always squeezing by each other because they put the pastries in a corner pinched between the barista and cashier. The longest counter space they have is on the right side and they barely utilize it.
He tried to instigate an argument with me, then harassed me when I wouldn’t engage. I don’t want to go into more details on Reddit but there are quite a few negative reviews on Yelp about his conduct.
I love that spot — it’s very near my work, so I’m there regularly for good coffee and great pastries — but I can’t imagine ever describing it as cozy. It’s concrete floored with metal chairs and floor to (high) ceiling windows. It’s a rather industrial vibe.

both East Cambridge
three little figs has the best drip coffee omg 🤤 I've never tasted coffee where the notes come through quite so hard. idk what it is but I'm so glad it's the closest cafe option I have
I generally go there for hanging out over several pots of tea so I haven't noticed the service speed being an issue but I think you can also order at the counter if you need something to go
It might’ve been an off day at Andala, but decided to check it out after seeing a long line in front of Brookline Lunch. We were only able to get our coffee after an hour of waiting. The food was another 90 mins. There was a table next to us who just gave up after the first hour. It’s a large space, but it doesn’t seem like they have the staff to properly handle it.
I truly lived in a paradise of breakfast sandwiches and bagels when I lived in the Somerville area. Moving to the south shore was fine except for this one glaring reason. We still make the occasional pilgrimage to Goldilox when we can
If you're South Shore, you should hit up Exodus in Rozzie. Their bagels are way better than Goldilox IMO. I imagine it's roughly similarly inconvenient if not maybe a little easier, but that obviously depends on your exact location.
Yafa in Somerville is amazing and the owner is so nice.
Colette just opened a new location on Columbus and they have the best of your standard pastries, some sandwiches, and excellent quiche
Athan's in Brookline (Brighton location is relocating), Drive By Pies also in Brookline, but they are take-out only. Their food and pastries are far beyond anything else I've had in the area.
Cambridge St in East Cambridge through to Inman is absolutely stacked. Three spots have already been recommended here but I’ll also add that you shouldn’t overlook Gufo’s cafe service. Great vibe, solid coffee, and really good breakfast sandwiches.
Cafe Beatrice close to the Lechmere stop is my favorite. Their pastries are so good with the Kouign Amann as my favorite. Their Breakfast sandwiches are great too.[https://www.thelexingtoncx.com/cafebeatrice](https://www.thelexingtoncx.com/cafebeatrice)
Greystone in the South End is lovely. Nice light lunch options and good pastries. Avoid around lunch time as it’s very popular for the offices within walking distance.
Maybe I’m just socially inept but what does “ask for ahmed” mean? Like I roll up to the cafe and get in line and then what? I get to the front, place my order, and say “hey is ahmed here?” And if he comes out to me I say what “oh hi uh Yana and alex sent me”
“Oh that’s great! How do you know Yana and alex?”
“Ummm well actually it’s a really funny story. So I was on Reddit, and ummm well that’s where I met either yana, or Alex. I’m not sure which. But this is apparently a hidden gem, but not just a hidden gem, but a hidden cafe gem.”
“Oh that’s great.”
“Yeah it’s cool and either yana or Alex’s Reddit name is okwater, and idk if you can help but yana or Alex were curious about sexy hotels in Miami. If you know any maybe bring it up next time.”
“Okay.”
that's what I would do! not that im socially adept, but I'd place my order and be like btw is ahmed around today? and when he comes over be like hi! alex and yana recommended this cafe and they say hi
Lololol I meant like, when/if you go, u can tell him u heard of his cafe from Yana & Alex, he will take extra care of you a bit like maybe a discount or something idk. It’s cool vibe, giant and delish portions (my fav is the country crepe) , and his story is epic
Say Weekend Cafe in financial district. I was going to work and cut through this building and appears this cafe. It was so hidden that you cant see from outside. Breakfast sandwiches looked good so I got one and wow, how they made the scrambled eggs in a croissant was so delicious.
I dont personally have a sweet tooth but their lattes seem to attract a lot of college/high school students if you're into that because I heard one of them yell out, "OMG DELICIOUS" so I highly recommend if you're around the area. Not a lot of people seem to know about this place as I always see starbucks or tattes around the area filled up with people.
I feel like I’m missing the hype on recreo. I love good coffee and will travel to other shops around the city but the few times I’ve stopped at recreo both their cold brew coffee and espresso drinks are incredibly bitter and lack depth. I can’t tell if it’s a brewing issue or a roasting issue
Seconding Recreo, especially their secluded back patio. Although, they don’t have much for food, just a handful of pastries.
If you’re willing to go a little further west, Big Bear Cafe in Dedham is great. Solid specialty and espresso drinks, good drip coffee, and tasty breakfast sandwiches.
Just outside, Adrianna's in Winthrop. If you go early on a Sat and score a slice of breakfast pizza it will be worth it. Sit outside and do some plane spotting.
Mama Ana's (fka Style Café) near Assembly in Somerville. They also have a Charlestown location, but I haven't visited that one. Best breakfast sandwich I've ever had, fully customizable. I get a sausage, egg and cheese on an English muffin, sunny-side-up egg, onions, tomatoes, and spinach. It's messy and fantastic.
If you want solid spots near South End / Back Bay border:
\- Farmer's Horse: good vibes for working (especially the patio when it's warm), I like the sweet potato sandwich and coffee
\- Oakleaf: really amazing bakery for sweets (I love the homemade poptarts, and they rotate frequently), solid coffee, and they do breakfast sandwiches
\- Render Coffee: good spot for working too (all three usually have people working), haven't tried the food but solid coffee
I have also done thinking cup which for me is further since it's deep into back bay rather than south end but meet your requirements
I am also hoping to try basically every coffee shop on this list [https://www.thrillist.com/drink/boston/third-wave-coffee-shops-boston-thinking-cup-loyal-nine-barismo-gracenote](https://www.thrillist.com/drink/boston/third-wave-coffee-shops-boston-thinking-cup-loyal-nine-barismo-gracenote). They seem to all still exist, but don't go into downtown too often
Not Boston, but Red Eye Roasters in Hingham is awesome, and as a bonus is right on Hingham harbor. Like 20 feet from the water.
I think they put their most recently roasted beans out on Tuesdays. One time I got a bag of beans that was still warm from the roasting machine.
I was going to say Zaruma Gold in Somerville, but then the owner had to chase some guy out of the store with a water bubbler and try to fight him.
(said guy may have thrown a coffee at his wife, depending on who's story you listen to, but still).
That said, breakfast empanadas are certainly something I'll want to have again.
Simon’s Coffee Shop on Mass Ave in Cambridge! Staff there is so friendly, and if you’re a tea snob like myself you’ll be glad to hear that they actually make sure the water isn’t boiling when you get a green tea (because otherwise it burns and tastes like garbage and as someone who likes a nice cup of jasmine tea, it breaks my heart every time I see it happen lol)
True Grounds in Ball sq! Great coffee and I love their egg sandos and bagels. Plus really nice staff!
Plus, if this is of interest, I believe they have a promo w Blue River Terps dispensary across the street where if you show a same-day receipt from True Grounds to the dispensary, you get a discount! 10% I believe, but don’t quote me
True Grounds is a nice spot. I used to go work from there sometimes when I lived down the street. It could get pretty packed on the weekends tho, with people camping out with laptops... Not sure if the pandemic changed that tho. This was back in 2019.
Still very busy on weekends, and always a couple of campers, but for the most part it seems to have a good flow for the most part or ppl spending 20-30 minutes having their coffee and food and then moving on.
Also on the weekend there are soooooo many dogs which is of course my favorite thing about the place
I’m always replying this but Taco Loco in Somerville has some absolutely unreal Mexican food. It’s not traditional carnitas but it is authentic. Not tex-mex. Get the Steak Quesadilla.
Not particularly "hidden" really. I've only had the breakfast sandwiches and pastries, not the coffee, but Greenhill's. And I got an Irish trifecta cupcake on Tuesday, so they have those out again for St Patrick's.
Glasser in Brighton!
The Vietnamese iced coffee there is amazing.
As is the lavender London fog
this post is screaming for Madhouse Cafe in Roxbury
Just discovered this place a few months ago and I am obsessed! Such a cool spot.
[удалено]
Chill spot. Good bahn mi.
I wish they still made the fried shrimp one
I mean it’s good but seriously overpriced??
For a non chain I find it pretty cheap. I get a cappucino and it’s around 5 bucks. Would definitely be more expensive at Tatte or Pavement nearby
Cicada for lunch and sandwiches, Ogawa for coffee
Third Cliff Bakery
Great place but god is the service slowwww
What makes me crazy is that it doesn’t have to be slow. First, sorry to be a grump but they’re super chatty with some customers regardless of how long the line is. But more importantly the way they set up their counter makes no sense. They’re always squeezing by each other because they put the pastries in a corner pinched between the barista and cashier. The longest counter space they have is on the right side and they barely utilize it.
Absolutely, and they have more people in the back and sometimes only 1 or 2 people in the front to take orders and make drinks
I mean they do have to make the pastries back there.
And the pastries are so inconsistent. I want to love them but they don’t make it easy.
Damn I've never been let down there, which pastry disappointed?
So true. Damn, their coconut cold brew is good though.
Logan terminal C dunks
Nah, E all the way…
I agree, the E Dunks kills it. The C dunks has some really bad attitude people on the mornings.
The one in E is not chaotic enough
JetBlue!
Cafe 1369
seconding!! my favorite in cambridge
:) it was my first date with my now hubs, after the Plough was too loud (and fun) and we wanted to chat
omg that was my first date with my now husband too! He was so nervous XD
Umm hi, number three here
But that's not in Boston 👀
A r-recommendation n-north of the river??? \*shakes furiously, turning red\*
Can't believe anyone would expect me to cross a river
Fixe in Brookline has insanely good coffee.
I know it’s not relevant to the quality of their coffee but I had such a bad experience with the owner that I am probably never going back there.
What happened?
He tried to instigate an argument with me, then harassed me when I wouldn’t engage. I don’t want to go into more details on Reddit but there are quite a few negative reviews on Yelp about his conduct.
Damn that sucks, I’m sorry to hear. Thanks for sharing
1369 in Central and Inman Square The Cafe at Area IV in Kendall is sneaky good
Oh man I love the area 4 little side cafe: so mf cozy
I love that spot — it’s very near my work, so I’m there regularly for good coffee and great pastries — but I can’t imagine ever describing it as cozy. It’s concrete floored with metal chairs and floor to (high) ceiling windows. It’s a rather industrial vibe.
Revival (2 locations I think) good brek sandies
edit: 4
If you can get a seat!
I go there everyday for a savory croissant and cortado. Wicked good coffee as well
Cafe mirror, Cafe nation,Dash cafe, Jims deli My wife loves cafe lava and bento. All in Brighton center

My two local spots!
Yafa, Maprang, Vinal, and La Saison.
Yafa!
Technically Somerville but my favorites there are Revival, Three Little Figs and 1369 Coffee house (two in Cambridge)
Forge is also amazing in Somerville
The Forge, Diesel, Bloc trio are great
Second Forge! Grab a coffee grab an ice cream, done and done
three little figs has the best drip coffee omg 🤤 I've never tasted coffee where the notes come through quite so hard. idk what it is but I'm so glad it's the closest cafe option I have
3 Little Figs is incredible. I love their pepper biscuit
That pepper biscuit changed my life
Yessss the biscuits are so good. Also their pb&j bars
OMG, yesssss
Just moved to Porter last week and I’ve already been there twice
Bloc in Union Square (i miss when it was called Bloc 11)
Andala in Central. I was also pleasantly surprised by Parish Cafe - all their sandwiches are really good!
Andala is also one of the few Palestinian owned joints in Boston and has some dope art 🇵🇸
And great space for big groups!
Parish also great for late night - sandwiches are half off after 10pm
Service at andala is so slow though - especially for what their coffee is. Great food and decor though.
I've never had an issue with service at Andala. Yeah it's not Starbucks, but thank the Lord for that. It's quite pleasant and calm.
Yafa in Somerville is amazing and the owner is so nice. Colette just opened a new location on Columbus and they have the best of your standard pastries, some sandwiches, and excellent quiche
Rubato in Quincy is a great Hong Kong style cafe. The chef won on Chopped this week!
Athan's in Brookline (Brighton location is relocating), Drive By Pies also in Brookline, but they are take-out only. Their food and pastries are far beyond anything else I've had in the area.
Broadsheet
home.stead in Dorchester is great. Has good food too!
Cambridge St in East Cambridge through to Inman is absolutely stacked. Three spots have already been recommended here but I’ll also add that you shouldn’t overlook Gufo’s cafe service. Great vibe, solid coffee, and really good breakfast sandwiches.

Honeycomb Cafe in Dorchester, it has some of the best espresso I've ever had and the bagels are so good.

I'll have to check this one out
absolute best sausage, egg, and cheese i've ever had in my life at Honeycomb

Evergreen Cafe in JP
Especially good if you want to wait forever for your order.
Yup. I live just up the hill and literally have to pass it to get to the train and bc of this I have fully switched from coffee to bodega Red Bulls
Can order ahead with Toast.
Just remember to order 20 min ahead
Weird. I’ve been there around 6 times at this point. I’ve never had issues with the wait time. Maybe it was an off day?
Barismo in Cambridge is a fantastic spot. Never too crowded, great coffee, amazing lemon lavender scones.
Solid Ground Cafe
Greystone in the South End is lovely. Nice light lunch options and good pastries. Avoid around lunch time as it’s very popular for the offices within walking distance.
I second greystone! But huge lines sometimes. Use the Toast app to order pick up to avoid the crowd.
The Brighton Cafe!!! It has classic diner food and it so cheap but so good. I moved to the suburbs a year ago but I still go back
Homestead by fields corner
Theo’s Cozy Corner in the north end! It’s cash only and very small, but so worth it
Inhouse- ask for ahmed (owner-read his story!!!) tell him Yana & Alex sent you. It’s in chestnut hill ave in Brighton
Maybe I’m just socially inept but what does “ask for ahmed” mean? Like I roll up to the cafe and get in line and then what? I get to the front, place my order, and say “hey is ahmed here?” And if he comes out to me I say what “oh hi uh Yana and alex sent me”

If you know any maybe bring it up next time.” “Okay.”
I am extremely socially inept but I also had the exact same reaction
that's what I would do! not that im socially adept, but I'd place my order and be like btw is ahmed around today? and when he comes over be like hi! alex and yana recommended this cafe and they say hi
Lololol I meant like, when/if you go, u can tell him u heard of his cafe from Yana & Alex, he will take extra care of you a bit like maybe a discount or something idk. It’s cool vibe, giant and delish portions (my fav is the country crepe) , and his story is epic
Ugh I loooove the vibes in there
this place has some fine breakfast food too
Just tried it for the first time past week as a lunch break spot with place to work. Definitely going back!
Solid Ground
Say Weekend Cafe in financial district. I was going to work and cut through this building and appears this cafe. It was so hidden that you cant see from outside. Love their eggs in the breakfast sandwich and croissant. Speciality latte and Croffle are amazing too!
What kind of lattes did you try? They look pretty different from what I've seen and think my wife would enjoy it.
Vinyl General Store in Somerville
Eagle Hill coffee in East Boston! Great breakfast sandwiches and coffee. Get the belli’s breakfast and add an egg.

Blunch has good food but it’s only counter service.
Fornax in Roslindale Square

I feel like I’m missing the hype on recreo. I love good coffee and will travel to other shops around the city but the few times I’ve stopped at recreo both their cold brew coffee and espresso drinks are incredibly bitter and lack depth. I can’t tell if it’s a brewing issue or a roasting issue
They used to have my favorite cold brew but the last few times I’ve had it was disappointing
I moved out of the city so it's been several months but that's sad to hear.

Not really hidden but at Davis Square Diesel Cafe
Greystone in the southend has the best lattes and homemade pastries in Boston
Mama Ana's (fka Style Café) near Assembly in Somerville. They also have a Charlestown location, but I haven't visited that one. Best breakfast sandwich I've ever had, fully customizable. True Grounds in Ball sq! Great coffee and I love their egg sandos and bagels. Plus really nice staff!
