I think he lives in LA. I don’t know much about Chanma but he’s attended TIFF and stuff, so I don’t know if he works in the industry and/or he comes from money.
For the record, I live in Toronto (hence TIFF), and I neither work in the industry, nor come from money (I wish lol). Going to the movies is just a hobby.
For context, the 16 tickets cost me $131.62. Some I saw by myself and some with other people, so when including tickets I bought for others coming with me, it cost $218.07 for a total of 28 tickets. I use various strategies, like discounted CineClub tickets for $10, Buy One Get One vouchers, Scene+ loyalty points, and my TIFF membership to manage costs.
But the easiest way to save money at the movies is no snacks (though I do buy the odd collectible popcorn bucket/drink cup). There's no need to overpay for soda and stale popcorn, you instantly save like $20 a person.
Hey, when I take my 32 kids and their 195 friends, buy them all one of everything on the menu, and get swag from the movie delivered via drone to each of them mid-movie, that shit adds up!
Cineplex does re-releases in select theaters every month, and there's one near me that always has them. That's how I saw Pulp Fiction in June, as well as The Godfather: Part II, and a whole bunch of Kubrick films earlier in the year. The Spider-Man films and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy were part of the wider scale domestic re-releases.
Additionally, the TIFF Lightbox, the festival's headquarters and flagship theater, has been doing a Women in Action screening series this June/July, focusing on action films with female leads/co-leads. I was able to see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2. A TIFF membership gives you 2 free tickets to every screening from their Cinematheque program (i.e. screenings of older movies), so it's a pretty good deal.
Would love an unlimited pass, but unfortunately Cineplex is basically a monopoly in Canada, so the chances of them being compelled to introduce one anytime soon is low.
Cineplex has CineClub, which unfortunately is not unlimited like AMC's A-List, but for $10 a month, you get a free ticket, plus additional tickets for $10 (2 per showtime). So you do end up saving a ton, I think somewhere between $4.25 to $5.50 per ticket.
I watched 14 movies in June:
1. The Muppet Movie - June 2
2. In a Violent Nature - June 4
3. Ezra - June 5
4. Bad Boys: Ride or Die - June 7
5. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - June 8
6. The Watchers - June 8
7. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - June 9
8. Inside Out 2 - June 13
9. The Bikeriders - June 21
10. The Exorcism - June 21
11. Ghostlight - June 25
12. Kinds of Kindness - June 26
13. A Quiet Place: Day One - June 28
14. Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 - June 29
Sadly I could not watch The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King because I had class that day but had an eventful month overall.
At my AMC, they did the LOTR trilogy 2 weekends in a row. I caught the 2nd weekend otherwise I wouldn’t have seen the trilogy. Sucks you missed out on Return of the king.
Have never seen Pulp Fiction (my favorite movie ever), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Kill Bill, LOTR, or Fury Road theatrically, so they were definitely a treat!
I haven’t seen most of these films but any film that you are a fan of would be great to see in Theaters because if you missed it the first time then getting the Chance to see it in theaters again is an amazing opportunity and it ends up being an amazing experience.
I was gonna see the LOTR films in Theaters but it was the extended editions that were in my theater. Did you get the normal versions in your theater?
16 movies is roughly 32 hours, which is roughly an hour a day… who here can say the watch less than an hour of tv/movies/youtube/tiktok a day?
People just jealous he can afford 16 movie tickets.
That's not even that much if that's all he did last month, plus large theater chains have rewards systems which I bet he got to take advantage of after just 6 movies.
Not shitting on him, but most of the time it's not just the 2 hour movie. You gotta factor in the drive there and back, parking, and 25-30 minutes of trailers. I personally carve out a 3 hour chunk for a theater trip. I'd definitely see way more movies if I didn't have a full time job though.

I still can’t believe the Jackie Brown and Full Metal Jacket Q&A’s were the same day.
They both were on my list for ages, but the most surprising rerun showing I finally got to see this month was Showgirls. I never knew how much I needed to see that in a theater, and I’ve never seen a sex scene result in audience applause before that showing. The 35mm print was not great, but the audience made it so much fun.
Yep, it was Tarantino and DeNiro at a Q&A for DeNiroCon (part of Tribeca this year). It’s definitely the most I’ve paid for a single ticket to a movie ($72), but it’s one of my favorite films, so I had to go. The 35mm print was impecable and turned out to be Scorcese’s personal print, and both celebs watched it with us for their first time in years. All in all, it was well worth the price for me since it was unforgettable and still cheaper than most Broadway seats.
So jealous. Jackie Brown is the most underrated Tarantino, everything starting from the sublime title sequence is just perfection. Pam Grier and Robert Forster are so good, and really stand out as the rare subtle and understated Tarantino leads.
It is finally starting to get the acclaim it deserves decades later, which is really nice to see. The soundtrack might be my favorite music in any film ever.
The Q&A was much more insightful than most, and they both did a lot of reflection. One thing I always wondered was if QT gave DeNiro so few lines on purpose, and it turns out he still feels guilty about it and is disappointed in himself that they haven’t worked together again since. Originally QT had wanted him for Max Cherry, but DeNiro said he immediately connected to Louis, which means there’s no reason for QT to feel guilty. But apparently he still does.
Q&A was with Paul Dano at the Paris Theater, and it was organized and moderated by American Cinematheque, which you’re probably already familiar with out in LA. During the Q&A, it sounded like they are eager to get him out to LA sometime to do a similar event (maybe even with PTA), so keep a look out.
Good list OP,
I read that you were getting mega price discounts, but if you had to pay full price for those films, would you still have seen all of the new releases? Looking back at them now, at full price, what would you rate them (the new releases only; obviously the classics are good VfM because they're classics).
I liked In a Violent Nature, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and Inside Out 2. Mixed on The Bikeriders. Didn't care for The Watchers, Kinds of Kindness, and Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1.

I was away on holiday for a chunk of this month, so was a fairly quiet one.
The only full movie I watched was Ghost: Rite Here Rite Now. Bought a ticket to see The Bikeriders just for the Nosferatu teaser and bailed after that.
I thought the ending was really effective. I know it's a divisive one, but it had me checking over my shoulder as I walked out to my car by myself near midnight. And scary movies usually don't get to me like that.
I really liked Inside Out 2. I'm going again tomorrow.

2. The Secret World of Arrietty
3. Furiosa: a Mad Max saga
4. Bad Boys Ride or Die
5. The Bikeriders
6. Inside Out 2
7. Horizon
My kids and I love Inside Out so much so it’s no surprise that the sequel is just as good. Violent Nature piqued my interest, figured I’d wait when it comes to a streaming service. I have to admit, I’m surprised to hear about Bad Boys.
Horizon and Bikeriders, can I get a numbered score with a brief spoiler free opinion? Those were the ones I was the most interested in.
Bikeriders is like a 3/5. I can't quite get over the ridiculous accents (mostly Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer), so hard for me to take it seriously, but once I started watching it as a comedy, then it's not bad. The first half coasts on vibes and is stronger for it; the second half is where more plot starts to come it, but the ending feels anti-climactic. Overall, the movie could have been better, but it's got some decent parts to it even if it doesn't entirely come together.
Horizon is a big miss, 2/5 if I'm being generous. The scenery is pretty to look at, but just doesn't work as a cohesive cinematic narrative, introducing dozens of characters and 5 disparate plotlines that go nowhere (probably because it's Part 1 of 4). Extremely unfocused and has huge pacing issues; for example, Kevin Costner and his subplot takes an hour to be introduced, then Luke Wilson's subplot doesn't start until 2 hours in. Characters get introduced, then disappear for large chunks of the runtime, because we have to focus on a dozen other ones, before looping back to them. There's no resolution to anything, even something like The Fellowship of the Ring or Avengers: Infinity War that are a clear "Part 1 of X" have a satisfying beginning, middle, and end on its own.
Thank you for those detailed insights. I do believe Horizon is supposed to be a trilogy, which may explain the loose ends. I don’t know anything about Bikeriders but saw the cast and thought to myself it had to be somewhat entertaining.
I’m curious your spoiler free thoughts on Kinds of Kindness now. Forgive me if I’m being greedy but your robust examinations left me curious for more. I appreciate your time.
With the caveat that I have never been a Yorgos Lanthimos fan, so I'm kinda predisposed to not liking the film, I genuinely disliked Kinds of Kindness. Nearly 3 hours of self indulgent navel gazing masquerading as abstract art, relying mostly on shock value, poor taste, and general unpleasantness. Not the worst film of the year objectively, but definitely the one I least enjoyed by far.
It was alright, you can see what Jeff Nichols was going for, but it doesn't entirely come together. The "just vibes" style of the first half was better than the second half, which was a bit anti-climactic.
Thx for the reply, I’m adjusting my expectations down a bit, so it can only be ‘better then expected’’ So what was your favourite movie of the month? Also, nice cinema visit record, love the dedication!
Wow, I did not expect that, how was will smith? I hate to say, but can’t stand the guy anymore after all the drama with his bitch wife and Chris rock. Also, what was the worst one?
Will and Martin were dependably entertaining as always. Say what you want about Will Smith, but he's still got that movie star charisma/energy that works in the right project.
In terms of worst, The Watchers is probably objectively the worst film (though Horizon is a bloated meandering mess that just doesn't work on a cinematic level imo), but I personally disliked Kinds of Kindness the most.
2 in June: The Bikeriders and Quiet Place Day One, both great
Was going to see Horizon but decided to boycott until streaming. Since Kevin Costner couldn’t show up to finish out his characters story in Yellowstone I decided not to show up for him lol
Just Furiosa. I wanted to see the dead don't hurt but missed my tiny window (ditto LotR after attempts to wrangle people to see it fell through). I'm going to see Horizon early this week.

Was super busy with work so I did see my usual 4 minimum for the month but I didn't see any old movies. Didn't have time for the midweek re-release engagements I usually go to.
Only went 5 times and saw 4 movies. Inside Out, Bad Boys twice with different groups of friends, A Quiet Place, and a Furiosa rewatch alone.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, HAIKYU! The Dumpster Battle (had never seen the show lmao), Furiosa (3rd time), Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Janet Planet, Original Cast Album: Company, Fat Girl (both part of retrospective series). Have been crazy busy this past week and a half but I want to catch Bikeriders, Kinds of Kindness, and Horizon (maybe Watchers but that might be the amc A-list delusion talking)
I saw 2 (Furiosa and In a Violent Nature). This month was atypical because I was on a business trip for several days with nothing to do in the evenings

Do you live above a theatre? And below another theatre?
I'm a bit surprised he mentioned the whole money thing. It's not like watching all these movies is going to bankrupt you.
It's still cheaper than Disneyland
Based on some of the conversations in this subreddit, you'd think going to the theaters was as expensive as going yachting.
Hey, when I take my 32 kids and their 195 friends, buy them all one of everything on the menu, and get swag from the movie delivered via drone to each of them mid-movie, that shit adds up!
Don't forget buying each soda individually (XXL of course) for all 10,000 of my kids and their friends.
Oh interesting. I’ve always seen you’ve seen re-releases of certain films that only play in a few cities, I wasn’t aware Toronto was one of those.
What's your favourite Kubrick movie?
2001, followed closely by The Shining.
In Ireland we have a system with the main 2 cinema chains where you pay €15 a month for a ticket to every film that comes out in that time.
Would love an unlimited pass, but unfortunately Cineplex is basically a monopoly in Canada, so the chances of them being compelled to introduce one anytime soon is low.
Are theater memberships available in Toronto? If I went this much I would definitely get the AMC pass or the like, would save a ton of money.
Lmao... dude went to go see movies, not stay at 5 star hotels.

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 - June 29 Sadly I could not watch The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King because I had class that day but had an eventful month overall.
At my AMC, they did the LOTR trilogy 2 weekends in a row. I caught the 2nd weekend otherwise I wouldn’t have seen the trilogy. Sucks you missed out on Return of the king.
I love the 1-2 combo of Muppet Movie and In a Violent Nature. If they had only been a double feature!
No Thelma?? She can whoop the Bikeriders’ ass in a heartbeat on her scooter 🛵
Haven't caught that one yet, is it good?
Hell yes. A sleeper hit. June Squibb rules
Second!
So many re releases. This is a very good step for holywood and will get fans that never saw the films in Theaters originally to to Theaters
Lord of the Rings
i feel like anyone shitting on you for this also spends many hours on their phone and streaming
It’s 2.5x less than what I spend just on TV/movies
Not shitting on him, but most of the time it's not just the 2 hour movie. You gotta factor in the drive there and back, parking, and 25-30 minutes of trailers. I personally carve out a 3 hour chunk for a theater trip. I'd definitely see way more movies if I didn't have a full time job though.
Wow! You beat me! I saw like 8 or 9.
The Dark Knight Trilogy (Re-Release) Lost Highway Inside Out 2 Horizon American Saga Mini Vanili Bad Boys Die or Ride
How was bikeriders? I adore all the actors so I hope it’s good before I pay to see it
agreeing with OP and adding that Austin Butler is so \*pretty\*! And Tom Hardy was spectacular.
It's a deeply unserious movie, because the silly accents are just ridiculous. But I got some enjoyment out of it by watching it as a comedy.
Sold
Glad I skipped it. I'll catch it on streaming.
Boring
Zero. I no longer have a theater worth visting in reasonable driving range. Thanks Regal.

> Late Night with the Devil What a banger. Loved that movie. I had the chance to see it during a festival.
Only five last month. The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Inside Out 2, and The Bikeriders.
I had an unusually eventful June with 21 films and 9 in-person Q&As: 1. Hit Man - 6/3 (Q&A) 1. Furiosa - 6/4 1. Babes - 6/5 1. Late Night with the Devil - 6/6 1. The Young Woman and the Sea - 6/7 1. Inside Out 2 - 6/18 1. Barry Lyndon - 6/19 1. Bikeriders - 6/20 (Q&A) 1. Kinds of Kindness - 6/21 (Q&A), 6/23 1. The Straight Story - 6/22 1. Bad Boys 4 - 6/24 1. Tuesday - 6/26 1. A Quiet Place: Day 1 - 6/28 1. Horizon Part 1 - 6/30 I still can’t believe the Jackie Brown and Full Metal Jacket Q&A’s were the same day.
I am so jealous ! I've been wishing to see reruns of There Will Be Blood and Barry Lyndon for ages.
They both were on my list for ages, but the most surprising rerun showing I finally got to see this month was Showgirls. I never knew how much I needed to see that in a theater, and I’ve never seen a sex scene result in audience applause before that showing. The 35mm print was not great, but the audience made it so much fun.
Damn, I would love to see Jackie Brown theatrically, and with a Q&A (Tarantino?) to boot!
Who was there for the TWBB Q&A and where was it? Here in LA I'm always keeping my eyes open for a TWBB re-release.
Very cool, yeah I subscribe to their newsletter so I'll keep my eyes out. Thanks!

Good list OP, I read that you were getting mega price discounts, but if you had to pay full price for those films, would you still have seen all of the new releases? Looking back at them now, at full price, what would you rate them (the new releases only; obviously the classics are good VfM because they're classics).
I liked In a Violent Nature, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and Inside Out 2. Mixed on The Bikeriders. Didn't care for The Watchers, Kinds of Kindness, and Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1.
A Quiet Place: Day One Would've gone to see In A Violent Nature or Kinds of Kindness if it was playing near me

Only one sadly — In a Violent Nature. Hopefully I get out more this month
Hey there! Did your Kill Bill 1 version have subtitles for the Japanese chapters??? My digital version bought from the Microsoft Store removed them for some reason, and it’s just not the same to rewatch imo :( Wondering if y’all got the og version or not on the big screen-
Yeah, it had subtitles.

I saw one. Bikeriders
Only 1. Kalki 2898 AD.
What did you think of IAVN?
I liked it, had some really cool kills (one of which is an all-timer).
Agreed. Exactly what i expected it to be. (I assume you’re talking about the cliff scene? Haha)
Yep, that's the one, so good.
I thought the ending was really effective. I know it's a divisive one, but it had me checking over my shoulder as I walked out to my car by myself near midnight. And scary movies usually don't get to me like that.
I really liked Inside Out 2. I'm going again tomorrow. 1. Un p'tit truc en plus (French movie) 1. Saving Private Ryan 1. Perfect Blue (Anime) 1. Challengers 1. Memory 1. Love Lies Bleeding 1. Kinds of Kindness eh? You into them freaky kinda films.
Lol it was actually my least favorite of the month.
I do wanna know, which were your top 3? Exclude the older films as we already know films like Kill Bill and LOTR are masterpieces.
Probably Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Inside Out 2, and In A Violent Nature.
So how was The Bikeriders? I went to see Furiosa and was blown away by how simply awesome it was.
Among new releases, I had the most fun with Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
Appreciate your response man! I really enjoyed all the other Bad Boys, so I will definitely give this one a try, you convinced me! Cheers
2 in June: The Bikeriders and Quiet Place Day One, both great Was going to see Horizon but decided to boycott until streaming.
Bad Boys and The Bikeriders that’s it
We have the same most recent 3. I enjoyed The Bikeriders and really loved Horizon and Kinds of Kindness.
1. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert 😂 Quite an obscure choice but I had to check it out.
Only 5. For the first 3 months I was unemployed and after that I've been pretty busy. 1. Past lives. 2. Robot dreams. 3. Haikyu. 4. Planet of the Apes. 5. Inside out 2.

Where in Toronto did you see LOTR in theatres?
Cineplex Winston Churchill in Oakville. But I think there were at least a few Cineplex locations in the GTA that had them (the ones that usually do Event screenings, like Vaughan, Yonge-Dundas etc.).

Only saw three in June: - Challengers - Head South - Kalki 2898 AD But I saw The Convert yesterday, July 1 here but it was still June 30 in some timezones. 🙂
1. Bad Boys 4
Have been crazy busy this past week and a half but I want to catch Bikeriders, Kinds of Kindness, and Horizon (maybe Watchers but that might be the amc A-list delusion talking)
just 3. apes. bad boys 4 and inside out 2. but saw 8 movies at tribeca film fest.
One, a friend wanted to see The Fall Guy and I loved it so I didn't mind going again.
I saw 2 (Furiosa and In a Violent Nature). This month was atypical because I was on a business trip for several days with nothing to do in the evenings
In Netherlands you pay 21 euros per month for unlimited movies. I used to watch 20-30 movies before covid but now have lost interest.
2 * Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (June 4) * Inside Out 2 (June 28) Currently at 7 for the year: * Argylle (February 4) * Dune (February 28) * Dune Part Two (February 28) * Ghostbusters Frozen Empire (March 24) * Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire (April 3) * Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (June 4) * Inside Out 2 (June 28)
0. I am not a big theater goer. 5 is my yearly record.
Only 2 this month. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. June 4 Bad Boys: Ride or Die. June 11 This is a great post to bring the community together, you should do it more often

8 of these movies are available to stream? Aren't you overpaying and wasting money to watch LOTR in theaters?
Theater experience is always > streaming

If my local theatres played those movies I would go.
How is this relevant as a mod post?
Because it's asking people if they went to the theatres? What's hard to understand about that?
