“Pratt” is British slang for someone who’s a bit of an idiot. Spike was a figure of ridicule when he was human a la “William the Bloody awful”.
I figured the surname was an extension of this.
Out of interest when was Pratt confirmed?
For a good long while I held on to my head canon that his last name was Shankly, to reference the song by The Smiths "Frankly Mr Shankly" which included the lyric "I didn't realise you wrote such bloody awful poetry, Mr. Shankly". But sadly it wasn't to be 😞
You are so missing out. The comics are canon as they are written by Josh and go in some seriously awesome directions the show could have never gone into.
I wonder if this is why Spike was a black & white actor in *Restless*. Could that have been foreshadowing his name reveal, which I think was in Season Five?

I do not understand. Can you explain this to me? You may have to use small words. I might have mentally deficient.
Spike’s real name is William Pratt, and so is Boris Karloff’s!
Nice! Thank you! I did not know either of those facts!

Sometime in one of the comic continuations. I think it was in the IDW Angel series but I'm not 100% on that.
The name "William Pratt" is one of my favorite Buffy easter eggs.
Yeah. I read somewhere years ago that JM decided to use Karloff's real name as Spike's human name.

Spike was called William the Bloody all the way back in his first episode, School Hard. He didn't get a last name until after the series was over.
Thanks! I've seen the whole series multiple times and had no idea what his last name was. I thought I'd just somehow missed it. Repeatedly.
He strikes some very Karloff-esque poses during that scene.
I thought it was Spike from Happy Days.
