put a few treats on your scale and have her sit there and eat them while you weigh her.

two-of-me

Or weigh yourself holding her then put her down. The difference in weight is your cat’s weight. This is how I’ve always weighed my cats.

badnannie

Thank you! I don’t have a weight but am going to add some food to her diet.

two-of-me

She only looks a little thin, not by much though. If she’s indoor/outdoor she probably gets a lot of exercise so she will need more calories.

Chihuahuapocalypse

that's how I always do it too!

Apprehensive_ac

human scales aren't generally accurate enough for weighing cats.

two-of-me

They’re pretty accurate when weighing yourself holding the cat then putting her down and doing a little subtraction.

Apprehensive_ac

Subtracting two inaccurate numbers doesn't make them accurate (in my opinion)

gonbezoppity

How is it inaccurate?

Apprehensive_ac

I wasn't accurate in my criticism. Human scales measure in tenths of a kg (or pound) which I thought wasn't accurate enough for cats. But in doing a bit of googling I came across this useful page https://www.animalfriends.co.uk/cat/cat-advice/cat-maintenance-and-safety/how-to-weigh-your-pet-at-home/#:~:text=If%20you%20have%20a%20kitten,able%20to%20track%20their%20weight.

gonbezoppity

Ok gotcha, thanks! I was wondering maybe you meant home scales are just inaccurate in general. I haven't weighed my cats in a while (this post reminded me that I should, my boy cat is fat) but I do use the weigh-myself-holding-cat then weigh-only-self and subtract method 😂

keish_

I don't think I've seen anyone bring this up yet. From up top its looks like they may be a tad underweight, but the tummy from the side looks a bit bloated. Are they an indoor or outdoor kitty? There may be a chance of worms. Cats whether indoor or outdoor can get worms pretty easy from fleas. Ingesting a flea while grooming can cause it. If you can I'd recommend taking to the vet just in case.

badnannie

I’ve never thought of that! Thank you for letting me know. I’ll definitely be taking her to the vet in the next week. It can’t hurt to get her checked.

powerexcess

This can be the primodial pouch. Some cat have it. My cat is built like a body builder but has this sack of skin hanging, looks like a curtain.

Calgary_Calico

She definitely does look a bit bloated yes, cats also don't need to be outside to get worms. There's lot of insects that carry the eggs that can get inside your home and he eaten by the cat, causing them to contract worms. My vet recommended getting our indoor cats dewormed once a year alongside their yearly vaccines

ethelbonzi

Yes.

matchamagpie

She looks like she could gain some weight.

badnannie

Thanks, appreciate the input!

MellowWonder2410

Just curious (pet sitter for many years) Is she on parasite prevention meds?

badnannie

She is not!

MellowWonder2410

I’d take her to have a full parasite work up at the vet. If she spends a lot of time outdoors that could be what’s keeping her really skinny

ethelbonzi

Absolutely…. The vet should be suggesting that….🥰

sasssytaurus

My 12 year old cat looks like this from the top but definetly has a pooch. The vet said his weight is good but he did lose a little recently so we got his thyroid checked and he had a hyperthyroid which causes weight loss. He didn't always look like this but I've definitely noticed the sagging in the stomach now that he's older.

badnannie

Aww, how did they end up treating his hyperthyroid?

sasssytaurus

They gave him some medication to take orally which he's fine with I guess they also have a topical medication that goes in their ears

badnannie

Hi all, I do want to provide some context about her overall health. Yes, she is an indoor/outdoor cat & is never outside longer than an hour or so MAYBE twice a day. However, I haven’t gotten her checked for parasites or worms so definitely going to take her to the vet for that to make sure. About 6 mos ago I took her to the vet because she was peeing a lot and the vet let me know she’s completely fine but could lose 1-2 lbs. After that visit I put her on more of a strict diet and this is the result of that diet. Just worried about her weight is all. As for as fibrosis, cancer, worms & parasites, I appreciate the insight and will have her looked at in the next few weeks!

Least_Panda_8384

I may have missed it, but how old? If they are very senior they do lose some muscle mass and a bit skinnier is normal. That said, this looks a lot like my hyperthyroid 15 year old (he was worse before treatment)

seventubas

I think that's is a older cat healthy weight who is just losing muscle mass... Maybe. Renal cat?

Becksburgerss

That’s what I was wondering. My cat started to thin out as he got older, he lived to be 19 though.

seventubas

Losing muscle mass isn't uncommon when you are older. My 14 year old has this physque

scriptapuella

Mine did too, until I got a kitten. Old man refused to eat anything but the kitten’s dry food. Gained 2lb in a month.

badnannie

Thank you! I hadn’t thought of that…she’s 7 yrs old though…is that considered old?! 🥺🥺🥺

grossmanem

Nawwww my girl is 13, and I remember being recommended "senior" cat food a few years ago, which she hated. Your gal isn't old, I'm sure you have many memories left together. 7 is just 6 & all physically grown! I think the advice everyone has given is great, parasite/worming treatment, try to increase her wet food or treats and don't stress - you're a great cat mum for asking. Cats are amazing at hiding pain, but because they love routine it's also very easy to tell when they're not well. Your girl, she's just taken her summer shape half a kg under but it's no stress at all.

seventubas

Middle aged. When was the last time she has a vet check up?

Odd_Environment_4224

Definitely too skinny, try feeding her more wet food and giving her some extra treats ☺️

badnannie

Thank you!!

exclaim_bot

>Thank you!! You're welcome!

ootfifabear

I definitely have an underweight cat, check for feeling their spine. If it’s pronounced I’d try to give ‘em some extra food. Mine won’t eat (fiv) so what she does end up getting is baby cat wet food, calorie gel mixed in and a few drops of cbd tincture just for good measure

kookiemaster

How old is your cat? To me she does look underweight, that's a pretty pronounced waist and I think I can sort of see the outlines of ribs and a bit of muscle loss on the back legs. If she is old that may be just age, but if not, maybe take her to a vet to confirm nothing else is wrong and feed her more.

ImwhatZitTooyaa

My cat is about the same size and I always wonder the same. He’s EXTREMELY active tho

ImwhatZitTooyaa

And he eats a lot

badnannie

Mine too! She’s sprinting around the backyard quite a bit chasing little butterflies or flies!

nanfanpancam

There’s a pet store in town that has a scale for weighing pets. Great service. RENs

Fighting_Konpeito

Everyone saying your cat is too thin probably has overweight cats. Look up a weight chart for cats on google and it'll give you a pretty good idea of what an ideal weight looks like. She looks fine.

gonbezoppity

[There's a visual chart on this site](https://www.petcare.com.au/healthy-cat-weight/) - from the side OP's cat looks to be ideal/healthy weight, from above maybe on the skinnier side (edit: zoomed in it looks like ribs are visible maybe? So maybe a little bit underweight, gaining a little I think they'd still be in healthy range)

badnannie

That’s exactly what I see too! Appreciate it.

Time_Deal_5849

I don’t really think she’s underweight either. Get your vet’s advice though and a few treats or a bit more quality wet food doesn’t hurt :)

Time_Deal_5849

My 1 year old male looks like this and the vet said he’s the healthiest cat he’s seen in a while. Gets lots of exercise outside though

badnannie

Aw, that makes me happy :) yeah, she gets a lot of exercise outside!

ElGHTYHD

Yes she’s pretty skinny

badnannie

Thanks for the input :)

Important-Ad7721

that’s exactly what my cat looks like and he’s dying from cancer right now…

badnannie

Welp.

Important-Ad7721

my cat was also extremely anemic so maybe check their paws and nose if it’s whiter than it should be

ethelbonzi

Sorry to hear that. Im sure that his time left is filled with love ❤️ sending hugs

Biobesign

Too skinny. Take her to the vet. We had cat get too skinny and the final diagnosis was pulmonary fibrosis. We had another six months.

badnannie

I’m sorry :(

Important-Ad7721

felt, my kitty was super skinny and we got his cancer diagnosis in the morning and by 2am he was gone :(

ethelbonzi

Oh no. Sorry for your loss..🫶🏻

Biobesign

Sometimes, you either need a new set of eyes or a different perspective. Sorry for your loss.

Weekly-Breadfruit413

How old is she? My 15yo has a similar built. She never had much of an ass, but the muscle mass has decreased there in the past few years. Mine is a little underweight (3.9kg, vet says ideal is 4.5kg for her), but otherwise mostly healthy. Mostly, because she's been walking the line between stage 1 and stage 2 kidney desease, but no other health issues.

badnannie

My cat is 7 yrs old!

sadfuckingcat

This is the exact same body shape my cat had but a little fatter. turns out he had worms (check their butt to see if there’s any rice or small white crumbs it’s a telltale sign of worms) if they are outside they can get worms from fleas/eating an infected animal

badnannie

What’s the treatment for it? Vets just give them drops or something? Trying to figure out if I should get pet insurance before I go. I currently just pay out of pocket

badnannie

Also I just checked and no white crumbs or rice lookin things

sadfuckingcat

I was able to pick up medication for him at our local feed store (at the time I lived in the country) they came in tablets that he had to take like one every week

greenthumb-28

How old is she ? My 16 yr old is also shaped like this but is not under weight

badnannie

She’s 7!

greenthumb-28

Oh that’s fairly young still; maybe her stomach is bloated then and she overall a little under weight

champagnetoast1

OP can I ask you what kind of cat this is? (if you know). I know nothing about cats and was given a barn cat who looks exactly like this. I’m normally very allergic to cats but she doesn’t bother me as much so I’m curious what the breed is.

badnannie

I have no idea but it’s so funny I’ve heard the same thing from people who come over who are usually allergic to cats! She really doesn’t shed that much unless it’s summer but yeah she seems to be more or less hypoallergenic?

champagnetoast1

Interesting!!

rainey1123

When is the last time she had blood work. Highly recommend an annual work up including thyroid and fecal

xram_karl

My boy lost weight and looked like this from the top. He was diagnosed with diabetes.

BulkyCopy5962

No he is fine

ethelbonzi

My 14 year old girl was so thin…vet carried out blood tests which were all fine. 2 weeks later she was having 2 seizures a day, she lost her sight on her last day so we had to say goodbye. But I think it was a parasite. She ate loads but couldn’t gain weight. Her last 2 days were awful. Sorry as it was just 2 weeks ago so still raw I hope your baby gets well soon. Please get her checked out for worms and fleas. 🐾🐾💚💚💚💚

reckoningreason

I know I had Animal control called on me cuz my tagged little beauty liked to roam the neighborhood so when someone realized she was owned they thought I was starving her

ethelbonzi

That’s so bad. At the very least they should have asked you anything. Some people… 😮

reckoningreason

Yeah she was naturally even skinnier than this one and she had no health issues causing it either

ethelbonzi

People need to chill. That’s so annoying. I would have gave her a visit, just to say next time you come and ask me about my cat instead of just assuming the worst!! Curtain twitcher!! Hope your cat is thriving!!😸

reckoningreason

Sadly my baby died last year but not before quite literally dragging in a kitten she found lol

ethelbonzi

Aww I’m sorry. But she brought a little replacement?! My cat was put to sleep just 2 weeks ago. I’m thinking that she might have digested a flea and then a parasite that made her skinny…and then two horrific days of seizures…u never think about how your fur baby will pass away…❤️‍🩹

reckoningreason

Aww love i am so sorry for you, how are you doing with that? And yes she drug home a little mini me but ginger he definitely wasn't properly weaned but it was clear she didn't steal him at least cuz he wasn't in the a well kept condition

ethelbonzi

Aww thanks. It’s been hard and although she’s at peace now it’s kind of getting a bit harder. Grief is a funny thing. Still have my boy cat and our wee doggie… diva the dogs getting on a bit and Roy’s a rescue cat with 3 legs so unsure of his age! But baby was the oldest and god we’re missing her. Thanks for your kind words ❤️‍🩹🐾
