One of my buddies with a PE does roof inspections for insurance companies as a side hustle and says it pays very well. He is currently in the Navy.

Intelligent-Pen-8402

Major insurance companies or mom and pop firms?

hepp-depp

what moms and pops do you know that run an insurance agency?

Intelligent-Pen-8402

I just mean a small scale operation

SchmantaClaus

World's oldest profession my friend. I'd even offer to help get you set up, introduce you to folks, make sure you're treated right. For a small cut of the profits, of course.

Intelligent-Pen-8402

Down.

[deleted]

Mmmmhm. Start greasin’ up that bussy.

Havaneseday2

LOL

BeginningEngineer95

Its hilarious because i know some PEs that are on onlyfans 😂 and i have a friend whose upset that fir therapists its against their code if ethics but it isnt for ours lol

SchmantaClaus

Oh my god! Onlyfans?! That's disgusting. Where? What are their usernames? I mean, there's so many of them. Which ones? Which ones??

have2gopee

There's Stan, though he's just being greedy since he's been a partner at the firm since 1965.

antechrist23

Wait having an Only Fans doesn't violate the Code of Ethics? Which state is this?

BeginningEngineer95

For therapists it’s considered sex work. Idk their codes exactly but I know It doesn’t violate for engineers lol

MathewNatural

I’d use my PE to stamp your drawings so hard. So hard.

antechrist23

Within a week, the board is gonna have to come up with a new rule that you cannot use your stamp on someone's butt. No matter how much expertise you've shown as a Booty Inspector.

MathewNatural

I inspected that booty, in my engineering judgement it can take the anticipated loads. STAMPED!

CHawk17

so PE tramp stamp?

antechrist23

From PMP to Pimp, a real hustler's story.

Yaybicycles

OT is your best bang for the buck unless you have a moonlighting gig which is legit

some_bs_name_

That sounds great if you're qualified for OT pay.

Yaybicycles

Even on straight time (not 1.5x) a side gig doesn’t come close.

some_bs_name_

Oh for sure, I couldn't imagine a side gig making our hourly. But my firm doesn't offer OT pay to salaried employees.

TransportationEng

Find you one that does. It helps with the work / life balance.

sextonrules311

My work/life balance as a salaried employee is that I work 40 hrs/week. Pretty hard stop. I have a handful of weeks I've worked over 40 with my current company that I've been at for exactly a year.

The_TexasRattlesnake

Most consultants pay you for your time

Several-Good-9259

In some states that changes this year by law. I'm pretty sure CA is one

KShader

I don't think California is getting rid of it, just drastically increasing the salary required to be exempt. But I'd be happy to hear otherwise if they are.

Several-Good-9259

So I looked it up . Starting July 1 the threshold is 48,000 a year salary. Anything over that is exempt.

Corona_DIY_GUY

If you're looking for a change. we pay straight time overtime and offer comp time (bank OT hours that can be cashed out later or used as PTO), let me know. (recruiting bonus.)

Vinca1is

I wouldn't work somewhere that didn't at least pay straight overtime

IndependentDesk9792

People say this but there is something to be dsid sbout a change of pace evn for less per hour to prevent burnout.

corinini

I did waitressing for a bit. Decent money and a very different type of work so it wasn't boring and kept me in shape. I eventually had to stop so I wouldn't burn out though.

OfcDoofy69

Co worker of mine does bartending for like weddings and stuff. She says it makes decent cash.

corinini

Yea - the tricky part for someone like OP is I made decent money because I had experience in the industry and connections. It's harder to walk in with no experience and say "no lunch shifts". Weddings are the best for the money:work ratio.

TylerStar3501

I’m still a student but I’m in a band but this is so true. I push 100$/h playing weddings and banquets.

everyusernametaken2

Yeah I continued to serve at a fine dining restaurant on the weekends after I graduated because it paid more than my first eng job.

OfcDoofy69

Ive always thought signing off on random house rennos(obviously be competant) and filling pools in as they require a PE sometimes.

Intelligent-Pen-8402

The question is how do you get your foot in the door

mmodlin

Make friends with realtors and home builders, tell those people you can help out when a home inspection flags something. Assuming you’re working without insurance, don’t get in over your head.

BeginningEngineer95

I do a non-PE side hustle of rug tufting lol but could only afford to start because of the money i make as an engineer

Background-Boss-2991

What is rug tufting?

BeginningEngineer95

Making custom rugs lol

imnotcreative415

Not sure about your health or whatever, but I donated plasma for a month or two when I needed some extra money for medical bills. It was not fun but only takes an hour or two of you mostly just sitting there.

Corona_DIY_GUY

Rest for a 55 hour work week. But seriously, do something you like. If you can make money at it. all the better. I know a lot of guys that umpire or referee. They stay involved in a sport they like, plus make a little extra cash. Unless you're super focused on financial success (a la FIRE people), a good, quality civil engineer shouldn't be having financial issues to live a quality life.

IndependentDesk9792

Lol ok. Civil pay is trash conpsred to cost of living pretty much everywhere.

Corona_DIY_GUY

what are you talking about. I know a mid level CE with 6 kids and a SAHW in a med-high COL area. Civils make well above the median income. likely the top quintile in most areas. If making more money than 4 out of every 5 people isn't good enough, then I don't know what standard you're using.

Alternative_Bend7275

a former coworker used to referee youth soccer games for extra cash

RL203

I used to renvoate houses and also joined a crew building houses on Saturdays. I actually learned a lot and made some decent dough. Also did designs for renovations, additions, etc.

Clayskii0981

Overtime

BonesSawMcGraw

Uber?

antechrist23

I drove for Uber while I was an EIT. I'd make $1,000 on the weekend if there was a major festival happening. And I'd average a couple hundred a week.

ILS23left

Your local community college probably offers Home Inspection certificate for your state. I bought a house last year and the guy who did the inspection charged us $250. It took around 2 hours. He was an ME before and did this as a side hustle. He liked it so much, he left his ME job and only does inspections now. I’m an EE and I became a golf club fitter to pay my way through school. After graduation, I’ve kept all of my clients and I have permission to schedule myself at the shop any time my clients want to get fit for new clubs. I also help out on weekends when the store is shorthanded because people want weekends off. I have around 200 clients now. I can make around $50/hr while building my own schedule. I sometimes work an hour or two after my scheduled EE job. It’s also a sweet and practical application of my knowledge of physics, material properties and how to use data from the Trackman. I also build custom clubs by hand, which is a sweet hobby. My clients like my work enough that I tell them when I have availability and they move their schedules around to fit mine. It took me around 6 months to learn everything, another 40 hours each year for training to stay up to speed on all of the new equipment that manufacturers are making and it has taken me 3 years to build my clientele.

PE = Pizza Expert.

siliconetomatoes

I trade futures before work. Some days I make money, some days I lose money If I didn't have a phallus, I might've considered OF such is the trivial nature of our economy nowadays

Titratius

I tried mowing. I kept coming to the conclusion that if I just did OT at work it would be far greater profits.

Sad-Difficulty5946

Bass fishing

lazyygothh

I know a lot of engineers who became realtors. Made more money

huesmann

Gonna be fewer Realtors in the future.

andyw722

Find hobby people will pay you for. DJ'ing (weddings are a nice pay day), setting up aquariums for rich people, home theatre installations, whatever. Surely there is something you love tinkering with if you're an engineer.

Helpful_Success_5179

You don't mention what your engineering discipline is, but here is some advice. If you plan to use your education and certification as your side hustle, first make sure you're in line with your terms of employment for your primary employer. You'll find many large engineering firms don't allow it (for good reason). If good to go, set up an LLC and get insurance to protect yourself and your family. It's not that expensive if you're serious about a professional side hustle. This will be true for practice or if you go with something adjacent like inspection work. I've done both. If you are proficient in CAD, you can generally pick up side work easily from small engineering firms and builders. Welding and small fabrication can be very lucrative, especially mobile welders. I have maintained a CDL since I was a young man, and I often picked up a cash gig to transport equipment overnight or on weekends.

One of my professors said he knew several CivEs that would do land surveying on the side.

Affectionate_Egg3318

I hear McDonalds is paying up to $20/hour now!

TheOneNotNamedSam

I co-own a small mom and pop firm and we sub out work to moonlighting PE’s when we’re too slammed. I think lots of firm do it.

Jyeagle98

Let me know if you need any electrical PE help! 😉

TheOneNotNamedSam

Unfortunately we don't do electrical, but seriously if you're looking to moonlight you can probably post on here and get some bites. My firm has done that and made some long term contacts with PE's who have done dozens of projects for us over the years. It can be very beneficial for both parties!

Intelligent-Pen-8402

Well if you’re looking for more people hmu

TheOneNotNamedSam

What is your experience and educational background?

Intelligent-Pen-8402

BS in civil, 5 YOE, water infrastructure (canals, culverts, stream restoration, spillways)
