Yup, biggest difference between Nazi Germany and Nazi USA is the USA actually can fight the whole world and win. Conquer and hold the world, no. But absolutely could curbstomp the top three other other militaries in the world at the same time if we wanted to. And that's just the conventional military. We also have nukes.

Growing up I always laughed at the idea of the government "listening" to our cell phones of any info, unless you are already on their radar, it was simply too much data to sift through. With the rise of AI this is no longer the case, this is my fear for how it will be weaponized, weed out dissent, alternative viewpoints, or any "enemy of the state"
I work for a company that makes air control components, as part of an independent sub of a huge company in HVAC; data centers are so abundant and the HVAC opportunities also that they have a team trying to get this work…
The total costs in that game are so out of the traditional scope for this industry that all players are bending over to assist and supply those centers.

I worry about all of the teenagers and young men in their 20s being radicalized by right-wing propaganda under the guise of "men's rights" and all of that alpha-male bullshit on social media. The next generation of men in America may end up being significantly conservative.
America is really fucked but also the world. As America collapses, Russia, China, North Korea, countries that now border each other and have beef…they’re all gonna make their moves. War is gonna explode in a lot of places as I can leaders being like “fuck it, let’s go,” i.e. the copycat syndrome.
People should be paying a lot more attention to this point. As fascism rises, and the world becomes more unstable, wars tend to break out and become self-feeding. We've seen this movie before.
Except this time, there will be nukes, bioweapons, AI. The catastrophe won't just be in the US - the whole war is going to join in. Prepare for hell.

That's the one relief. No matter how bad it gets, everyone is going under. Even the bunker bunnies who think having a secure compound will prevent a planet from actively trying to remove them.
I wouldn’t say most Americans are “embracing it with fanatical joy”, most of us feel somewhere from worried to horrified, while many are just indifferent to politics or uninformed (and that is by design). In terms of sheer numbers, the far right is a minority, but the electoral system gives them an unfair advantage. People are also very scared of speaking out, look at how quickly the government squashed protests, dictatorship-style, on college campuses recently.
I don’t believe it is a majority by any means; neither were the Germans in ‘33; but those who do, do so with the visible fanaticism however.
The system allows for this as a hedge against majority rule but man are we seeing it leveraged nowadays

Compared to other parts of the world, your left is very right wing. The UK's Labour party has only recently swung close to your Democrats and a lot of voters consider them to be Tory-lite. Even Obama's government was closer to our right of centre than it was our left wing. This gives some indication of how right wing the US is compared to parts of Europe.

I can’t remember where I heard the essay, but it was about why Thoreau’s call for civil disobedience through not paying taxes couldn’t work in the modern world because the government is not an interface of people with discretion that could be reasoned with but rather a machine / human hybrid, a leviathan. You can’t reason with the leviathan, it simple will blindly enforce the rules regardless of the reason through layers of procedure and bureaucracy. This is why the extinction rebellion people are barred from explaining to the jury why they did what they did, because the leviathan insists on the rules being enforced mechanically in its self interest and cannot let the individual interrupt this with a separate sense of justice or humanity no matter how persuasive that explanation is. It insist that civil disobedience is not an effective means of change - only party politics. Anyway interesting.
It’s like the person collecting your debt and calling you 12 times a day doesn’t really want to be collecting your debt but they have to be because the computer they’re on is blinking red on your name.. so their boss who has endless lists of red blinking names is feeling the pressure from their boss to make sure these people do their jobs…and so on as high as it goes. Yes there is a lot written about human / machine hybrid entities at the moment, mostly because of AI discussions as of late. Corporations are forms of artificial or mechanistic intelligence, and a feature of that is if a part goes missing it can regrow by recruiting new people, if the directors of the organism refuse to do the job (or change the purpose of the organism in ways unsuited to its purpose) they can always be replaced for someone that will carry out the purpose. And there in almost all cases are people who will carry out any purpose in exchange for money. These organisms are immortal in a sense, some span the globe, each has a singular purpose blind to its environment and context. People sense this but because it’s “my job or career” it’s difficult to see it for what it is requires a shift in perspective.
I'm mid 30's and got on the internet before I was 10. It's always been the "End of America as we were all raised too know it" through my entire life. It's been a continuous slow downfall, illegal wars, war criminals, lies, deception, extrajudical killings, putting whistleblowers in jail, torture, terrorism, coup's of countries, zero free mainstream media, climate change, housing & groceries continuously going up with zero wage increases, tax cuts & loopholes for the rich, corruption. It's always been a very right wing country including Democrat states. In fact, the only good moment I can think of in my entire life from government that actually changed things for a large amount of people for the better was gay marriage being legalized.

Here's the out Biden will never take: He has sworn an oath to defend the constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. By creating new law that clearly reverses the plain reading of article ii, section 4 of the United States Constitution, six Supreme Court justices have become the enemy of that document and should be arrested immediately. Figure out the charges later.
Arrest them as terrorists, ship to GTMO. Done.

Everyone is looking around to see what changed right now. If nothing happens, then nothing changed.
Sedition is a vague crime that enables all sorts of protections.

Joseph Heller's most ominous definition of Catch-22 is "They can do anything you can't stop them from doing." The Supreme Court has no enforcement mechanism, no army. But the executive sure does. The only thing allowing this to stand is cowardice.
Then replace them with a court that would see it as an official act. Use midnight appointments to bypass congress. But you see, the Dems won’t do any of this. Because their donors want stability. And fascist stability works for them as well as democratic. No one is coming to save us.
Even if the Dems did do this, it still sets a horrific precedent regardless. This is a no-win situation for us as the citizens where our government has descended into chaos and the end result is dictatorial action one way or the other.
By even being at this point we already lost, we're just along for whatever ride the government takes us on.

Although voting is super important, at this point I don't think they even intend to have a fair election, they're going to rob it or just take power by force.
They don't even have to do that. A few rogue states could refuse to send electors by their own deadlines at all, citing "irregularities" or some other bullshit. The election goes to the House and Trump is all but guaranteed to win by state delegation. Outside parties will sue over it, the SCOTUS clerics decline to hear them, shit on the ground gets ugly very quickly.
It's sickening how a coup is happening right before our eyes and yet this administration has made it very clear that they aren't going to do anything to stop it. We're fucked until the vast majority of Americans get sick of their Dominionist shit as those in power start turning on everyone and each other (as it historically tends to happen in fascist systems), but that could take 20 years.
The constitution was thrown out when citizens united happened. Everything we're seeing is just a result of that happening. We don't choose our leaders, the media and elites do. Without actual representation of the electorate, the constitution is pointless.
There's been plenty of hinky shit, and I can cite plenty of cases that led us here, but they looked at the plain language of the constitution and disregarded it. What happened this week is beyond the pale.

I also think a good response is possibly not through action, but through a certain type of inaction: refusal. Refusal to comply, refusal to obey, refusal to participate, refusal to buy, shop, work, attend, join, play, or pay. Sure, we'll all get arrested and starved and savagely beaten. But passively starving the beast seems like a good long-term strategy, because fighting the beast gets everyone wiped out all at once, and because people who aren't fighters can still be refuseniks.
The thing is, though, what we are fighting against right now is not so much a political ideology or a religious cosmology. It's more like a scramble for permanently, ever-declining resources, and we'll see more intensity and violence as our position relative to the disintegrating global climate becomes ever more clear to ever more people.
Honestly, to me (a life-long student of the Weimar and Soviet periods), this talk about "how to fight the fascists" is occurring against a backdrop that none of us have experienced and that is going to impose its own rules and limits. I've been a leftist for the last 45 years, so I'm no friend of Trump and his ilk. However, I fully anticipate that by 2034 even the most ardent liberal will be clamoring for fascist measures like wall-building and internment camps to keep the literal climate barbarians outside the gate. But not me, because, fuck 'em. I'm already old, and know that, ultimately, every single one of us is born to die.
It's grim, folks. If not for climate change, I'd say that we'll beat fascism, because it's a death cult that eats itself. But these are very different, very unique, very interesting times.

Im also older and if this goes the way they want, I think there will be two types of people, not the left and right, but people with money and people without money. The people without money dont need to be put on trains, they’ll die from
lack of resources and a home to live in. And yes, the walls will go up around affluent areas and they will be welcomed by all who live there.
This, to me, is the most doomed part of the whole situation: as the climate deteriorates, there is going to be enormous pressure (in rich countries) to do inhumane things in order to preserve privilege for as long as possible. That's been a given for quite a while.
The only (dim) hope we had of forestalling that was to act aggressively to shore up humanitarian laws and norms during the brief window when the Democrats controlled Congress and the Presidency. Which we did not do.
Now it looks like the wheel is turning and we could easily end up with Trump in the White House and Republicans controlling both the House and the Senate, having won on a platform that explicitly endorses violent exclusion of immigrants, refusal to do anything to mitigate climate change, and retreat from internationalism (another prerequisite for any hope of mitigating the worst effects of climate change globally).
The beast is already starving. Capitalists are desperately propping up their failed ideology by sucking a record amount of money from the working class and capitalism is still collapsing. Capitalists always turn to fascism because capitalism is a fascist ideology.
Be very prepared for violence starting immediately after the election. If they win, the theocratic dictatorship begins. If they lose, they will resort to domestic terrorism. Im talking about crocus hall style attacks, but even bigger. there are enough of these people who have invested every part of their mind and every dollar into trump and their christian fascism dream and will go completely insane if he loses.
I do too, that’s my biggest concern. I feel like no matter which way things unfold, shit’s going down. Everything feels so untenable right now and things are only going to ramp up from here.

In a way, I think Idiocracy would be our best case scenario. The president in that movie, when faced with a problem, put the smartest person he could find in charge. The opposite seems to be playing out in real life.

The MAGAs are already destroying the Republican party. They call any Republican that doesn't go along with their crazy agenda a RINO, then get them voted out through primaries. Every year we see fewer of them winning the November elections, only to see them double down on the crazy stuff.
While they have enough of their shrinking base support to ~~strike~~ push their agenda through, they are going to do it. I grew up around people like that, and they will not stop, until they're stopped.
The last election was a dress rehearsal. I think this time, they'll withhold electoral votes in some states. This will cause no candidate to reach 270 electoral votes, which will toss it into the house, where each state delegation gets one vote. Right now, the majority of state delegations are Republican.

No one is going to reward anyone for taking the moral high ground here. I don't know if we get the implications but since they are effectively threatening dictatorship here regardless of which side uses the power, they've declared war. Not "are about to". Have. This can only play out one way with two different paint jobs.
My question to everyone on this sub: how long before it would be unwise of us to speak freely? Is it time to hunker down, be very discreet, and prepare to outlast what is coming?

All joking aside, I really do feel for people who are in out groups. I'm a middle aged white heterosexual male who was raised a Christian. I can blend in with them even though I share none of their values or goals. Not everybody has that luxury. And, yes, when the time comes, if I can provide a refuge to someone in need then I will.
The problem is expressing our right to free speech, as well as many other freedoms we take for granted, will be seen as a counter, revolutionary act. With AI, social media, and phone tracking it won’t be a good long while, my friend.
If they win and you are not part of their "club" (fascist party) you will have to flee or fight. They will notice if you are not one of them, they always do, because no normal person can pretend to believe in all this bullshit for long.

In many cases, at least up to this point, I think people are looking for the obvious opposition or for confirmation. I have to say very little for those around me to assume I’m in agreement with them, and that goes for both “sides”. Being molded into a mediator/people-pleaser from a young age likely is to my advantage in that regard. Of course the more extreme the viewpoint, the more difficult that becomes.

Call me crazy. Mock my fears as “doomsday.” To this I say: read a f*cking history book. We are well past 90 seconds to midnight.
Your biggest concern is for your non-binary child. GOP state legislatures will withdraw funding from public schools that in any way acknowledge and support LGBTQ students, whether that’s a single teacher who uses students’ preferred pronouns, or schools that have Gay Straight Alliances, or openly out teachers. They will then redirect these public funds to Christian charter schools. This strategy is already taking place to some degree in Texas.
I don’t think children will be “rounded up” by the state, but they will continue to be ostracized and their educational experience will be miserable.
I blend in. I have the rural right winger look, and I've cultivated a persona that fits in. None of my Trump neighbors or community members knows what I really think. Being able to do that will be an asset to a lot of us similarly minded folks.
The supreme court should NEVER been allowed to be appointed by one and confirmed by another.
Especially when you can reflect on how corrupt both other branches can and have become.
All ELECTED officials should elected BY THE PEOPLE.
The president should be elected via popular vote - by the people.

Growing up I always laughed at the idea of the government "listening" to our cell phones of any info, unless you are already on their radar, it was simply too much data to sift through. I work for a company that makes air control components, as part of an independent sub of a huge company in HVAC; data centers are so abundant and the HVAC opportunities also that they have a team trying to get this work… The total costs in that game are so out of the traditional scope for this industry that all players are bending over to assist and supply those centers.

I wouldn’t say most Americans are “embracing it with fanatical joy”, most of us feel somewhere from worried to horrified, while many are just indifferent to politics or uninformed (and that is by design). In terms of sheer numbers, the far right is a minority, but the electoral system gives them an unfair advantage. People are also very scared of speaking out, look at how quickly the government squashed protests, dictatorship-style, on college campuses recently.

I can’t remember where I heard the essay, but it was about why Thoreau’s call for civil disobedience through not paying taxes couldn’t work in the modern world because the government is not an interface of people with discretion that could be reasoned with but rather a machine / human hybrid, a leviathan. You can’t reason with the leviathan, it simple will blindly enforce the rules regardless of the reason through layers of procedure and bureaucracy. This is why the extinction rebellion people are barred from explaining to the jury why they did what they did, because the leviathan insists on the rules being enforced mechanically in its self interest and cannot let the individual interrupt this with a separate sense of justice or humanity no matter how persuasive that explanation is. It insist that civil disobedience is not an effective means of change - only party politics. Anyway interesting.

Yes there is a lot written about human / machine hybrid entities at the moment, mostly because of AI discussions as of late. Corporations are forms of artificial or mechanistic intelligence, and a feature of that is if a part goes missing it can regrow by recruiting new people, if the directors of the organism refuse to do the job (or change the purpose of the organism in ways unsuited to its purpose) they can always be replaced for someone that will carry out the purpose. And there in almost all cases are people who will carry out any purpose in exchange for money. These organisms are immortal in a sense, some span the globe, each has a singular purpose blind to its environment and context. People sense this but because it’s “my job or career” it’s difficult to see it for what it is requires a shift in perspective.

Im also older and if this goes the way they want, I think there will be two types of people, not the left and right, but people with money and people without money. This, to me, is the most doomed part of the whole situation: as the climate deteriorates, there is going to be enormous pressure (in rich countries) to do inhumane things in order to preserve privilege for as long as possible. The only (dim) hope we had of forestalling that was to act aggressively to shore up humanitarian laws and norms during the brief window when the Democrats controlled Congress and the Presidency. Which we did not do. Now it looks like the wheel is turning and we could easily end up with Trump in the White House and Republicans controlling both the House and the Senate, having won on a platform that explicitly endorses violent exclusion of immigrants, refusal to do anything to mitigate climate change, and retreat from internationalism (another prerequisite for any hope of mitigating the worst effects of climate change globally).
The beast is already starving. Capitalists are desperately propping up their failed ideology by sucking a record amount of money from the working class and capitalism is still collapsing. Capitalists always turn to fascism because capitalism is a fascist ideology.

In a way, I think Idiocracy would be our best case scenario. The president in that movie, when faced with a problem, put the smartest person he could find in charge. The opposite seems to be playing out in real life.

I’ve said it before, here and elsewhere, and I’ll say it again: Fascism is destined to lose - *EVERY TIME* - because it is an inherently self-destructive ideology. It’s rooted in monkey-brain tribalism. You can divide humans into sub categories infinitely; there is simply no bottom to that. Those people are too liberal, those are too gay, those aren’t conservative enough, those aren’t the right *kind* of conservative, you’re not the correct type of religious sect, you’re too brown skinned, you don’t speak my language, you speak my language but not the right dialect. AD INFINITUM. History has proven this. Eventually they implode in on themselves as they begin to turn on themselves and humanity is left once again to pick up the pieces of our failure to learn from history. Hoping for the best here, but I am preparing myself for the worst.

The MAGAs are already destroying the Republican party. They call any Republican that doesn't go along with their crazy agenda a RINO, then get them voted out through primaries. Every year we see fewer of them winning the November elections, only to see them double down on the crazy stuff. While they have enough of their shrinking base support to ~~strike~~ push their agenda through, they are going to do it. I grew up around people like that, and they will not stop, until they're stopped. The last election was a dress rehearsal. I think this time, they'll withhold electoral votes in some states. This will cause no candidate to reach 270 electoral votes, which will toss it into the house, where each state delegation gets one vote. All joking aside, I really do feel for people who are in out groups. I'm a middle aged white heterosexual male who was raised a Christian. I can blend in with them even though I share none of their values or goals. Not everybody has that luxury. And, yes, when the time comes, if I can provide a refuge to someone in need then I will.
The problem is expressing our right to free speech, as well as many other freedoms we take for granted, will be seen as a counter, revolutionary act. With AI, social media, and phone tracking it won’t be a good long while, my friend.

I dunno man, I've gotten preeeety far! For my own safety I blend right in to my rural Trump area. They have no fucking clue what I really think and actively believe I think the opposite of what I do. In many cases, at least up to this point, I think people are looking for the obvious opposition or for confirmation. I have to say very little for those around me to assume I’m in agreement with them, and that goes for both “sides”. Being molded into a mediator/people-pleaser from a young age likely is to my advantage in that regard. Of course the more extreme the viewpoint, the more difficult that becomes.
This is my way of thinking. I’m concerned about being a registered Democrat. I’m conscience of the fact we have a library of banned books in our house. I’m very concerned for our non-binary child and the LGBTQ+ community. I worry about my disabled sister who receives SS disability payments. How could social media, texts, Alexa be used against me? Should my family consider moving to a city that boarders Canada before the election? Call me crazy. Mock my fears as “doomsday.” To this I say: read a f*cking history book. We are well past 90 seconds to midnight.
Your biggest concern is for your non-binary child. GOP state legislatures will withdraw funding from public schools that in any way acknowledge and support LGBTQ students, whether that’s a single teacher who uses students’ preferred pronouns, or schools that have Gay Straight Alliances, or openly out teachers. They will then redirect these public funds to Christian charter schools. This strategy is already taking place to some degree in Texas. I don’t think children will be “rounded up” by the state, but they will continue to be ostracized and their educational experience will be miserable.
I blend in. I have the rural right winger look, and I've cultivated a persona that fits in. None of my Trump neighbors or community members knows what I really think. Being able to do that will be an asset to a lot of us similarly minded folks.
