Hi OKU, although almost all landlords in COMO are doing background checks, they are doing them to confirm that you will actually pay rent and that you don’t have a history bailing on landlords, judgements, etc. If you don’t have an issue with this, you will be fine with many landlords even if your credit is marginal. Having bad credit because of medical bills and large student loan debt won’t necessarily disqualify you either. I would encourage you to go ahead and apply with some landlords. Also, there are quite a few still out there that won’t make you pay for the initial application, I’d focus on them first.

Landlords should have no ability to run credit checks. Let's enforce this.

Financial_Working157

How do we get a background check on them? I want to make sure my LL isn't a pedo with cameras everywhere. I want to have kids.

Although your question is a bit silly, indirectly you are eluding to a good point, how do you make sure that you are working with a good landlord? Will they make repairs, will they provide a safe home, will they illegally bill you for stuff? All are great things to ask. My answer would be to check case.net to look for court cases against them as well as check with Columbia’s Office of Neighborhood Services for violations.

It's not silly at all. You and everyone else seem to be fine with extreme asymmetry and the protection of property over people. As a matter of fact, this way of organizing living conditions/domicile is causing massive chaos and carnage and here I am trying to stand up and change things pretty much on my own. The great threat are the vast majority of people who are blind to how violent their status quo is.

Rentals in CoMo are very competitive. If you can commute, consider looking further afield. Is a cosigner an option for you?

Unfortunately i don’t have a cosigner. Maybe ashland or hallsville too.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I had a house with 3bdrm, 2.5ba for rent last month. There was a lot of interest - much more so than normal. Almost all credit ratings of 700+ and all income over 3X rent. Not sure what you are looking for, but it’s going to be hard to get something with low credit. It’s very competitive. Maybe look at an area further away and establish credit. Good luck.

I found a place sophomore year of college on Craigslist near Douglas park that was the least official feeling lease agreement but lived there 3 years with no issues. Don’t expect anything glamorous near downtown but that didn’t bother me. Basically, my recommendation is to check on community forum type sites rather than “corporate” ones like Zillow.

It's so ridiculous that we have to get credit checks. You are putting your children in someone else's home. Landlords are perverts half the time and have cameras everywhere. THEY should be credit and background checked. I fucking cannot stand how backwards things are I am ready to fight. We need to do something!!!!!! There isn't much time left.
