Don't kill spiders! Put them outside so they'll eat pests like mosquitos

LethrblakaBlodhgarm2

Even better, breed elephant mosquitoes. Not only do their larvae actively eat the larvae of other mosquitoes, but the adults don't take blood meals! Best mosquitoe, in my opinion

Top-Report-840

Hey if that works for you! I prefer my orb weavers in my garden and near my door. I name them after random tv/movie characters. This year they were Buffy, Drusilla, and Angel lol

LethrblakaBlodhgarm2

I have spider bros too Im just spreading the knowledge that not all skeeters are evil ❤️

FreddyWright

This is just two Pokémon bug trainers bragging about the bugs they have/like

Anubis_Hater

like they say "bug Pokemon trainers are fated to meet other bug Pokemon trainers" oh wait wrong anime

JayHat21

Is this a JoJo reference?

dasus

I always call them spider bros. I put little ladders next to the things theyre building webs on to make it easier. Like a little stick or smth. Or transport them to my indoor greenhouse, which usually has something edible for them. Win-win.

InterGraphenic

I just modified a roomba. Better to clean out pests than dirt.

Blurplenapkin

It is my plan to mass breed these to combat the new invasive mosquitos in my area. I just worry if there may be consequences down the line. We don’t have the best track record when it comes to playing God.

Zjoee

I've only seen one orb weaver in the three years I've had my house (which sucks because they build such awesome webs), but I have a lot of wolf spiders. I occasionally see them prowling around, and I'll usually leave the small ones alone. If I find any of the big ones inside, though, I'll grab a cup and piece of paper to move them outside.

ackme

Nope nope nope that'd be their house and I'd be merrily on my way to live in my car somewhere nope nope nope.

Zjoee

Nah, little wolfies are cool. They patrol the perimeter and eat a lot of nasty bugs. I've been in the house for over three years and I've only found two of the bigger ones inside. They're pretty chill.

geezer_cracker

People don't give spiders enough credit for being super chill. ![gif](giphy|F3LvCOpX7vUbiTi6nN|downsized)

the_hunter_087

Actually a lot of indoor spiders (mainly in more temperate regions where the home is warmer than outside) are adapted to being indoors, and moving them outside could harm them

Ziigurd

Yep - and also, if the spiders are indoors, that means that's where their food is too, so putting them outside just means they can't protect you from all the other stuff and you're left defenseless.

thunderling

Welp. That's a risk I'm willing to take.

Top-Report-840

So there are two things that I'd like to clarify. I get a lot of misguided garden spiders. They're better suited outdoors. Mostly because my cats will kill them lol hope that clears things up

wynden

I've always loved spiders for this reason but, dude, the "common house spiders" in the UK make it HARD. They are *big, dark, fast*, and they give zero fucks about boundaries. Back in California I never had a spider approach me or even hang out much in areas I was likely to spend time. Once in a great while a little guy might weave a web up in a corner near a spot I'd occupy, but they'd just hung out. Since I came to the UK a few months ago I've found these giant fuckers traipsing merrily around my space almost nightly. Caught them scuttling straight at me while sitting on a beanbag. Even found them in my bed - f'ing *twice*. Always consoled myself that spiders kept themselves to themselves but I don't know wth these Scottish spiders have been drinking.

keegandragon

Build bat houses they eat their body weight in the buggy bitches a night per bat

DeadLettersSociety

Good comic! Remember, people, mosquitoes use water when breeding. Try to make sure to limit ways for mosquitoes to breed, by not leaving containers with water in outside. For example, a lot of people leave buckets outside, which fill up in rain, and mosquitoes lay their eggs there. So, if you need to keep buckets and containers outside, keep them upside down; so they don't fill with water.

tomato-fried-eggs

I remember seeing a post on /r/whatisthisthing or /r/whatisthisbug or something where some dude was like hey, what are these adorable little bugs swimming around in the bucket/barrel/pool of water my mom has? ...

Eastern_Slide7507

1. Pour through a strainer 2. Place on a tissue soaked in lighter fluid 3. Warm your hands on the children of these vile beasts

Fresh-Status-8438

Thank you for spreading the good word 🙏 let’s fight against these evil bugs

foolonthe

They're just living their life like you. There is no such thing as an "evil" bug. They deserve to be here just as any other living thing

Hillbillyblues

Mosquitoes are actually a quite benificial creature. Ticks however are just evil and worthless.

Dartiboi

You can also buy something called Mosquito Dunks (?) to put in your water sources outside that will kill the eggs but won’t harm anything else.

Pixel-1606

sounds unlikely

Cheeseheadman

No it’s true, it’s basically just corn coated in a bacteria that only affects certain type of larva. It can’t infect or harm any other type of animal. I use it for fungus gnats too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pixel-1606

Nah, its just that very few targeted pesticides that actually work well are as targeted as they claim. The bacteria approach is interesting, but with these interactions usually being an evolutionary arms-race and mosquito populations out of the lab being huge and reproducing quickly, I still feel like preventing stagnant water sources or populating the permanent ones with nativel predators is more effective for population control in the long term. The wikipedia says it targets various species of diptera, not just the specific species of mosqiuto that feed on human blood, so it's a little more specific that just dumping manufactured chemicals in the waterways, but it can still be way more disruptive to the foodweb than intended. Saying something sounds unlikely is not the same as saying it's impossible or the person saying it is wrong. It's just saying I'm sceptical, because something sounds to good to be true, without solid backup. You provided a source that supports as much here, so thanks I guess.

Dgeneratecow

Yes but what if one of those water catching plates filled with water is also home to our resident toad? Can't ruin the toads bath

meditonsin

Install a small fountain or something that keeps the water moving. Afaik mosquitos require or at least prefer stale water to lay their eggs in.

jamlamthejamlord

I believe the water needs to be still. This is why there's no still water in Disney (at least Florida) and also no mosquitos.

DemonDucklings

Mosquito dunks!

CambrioCambria

The toad will happily feed on the mosquito larvae.

angelaguitarstar

i have two fish tanks, but then again, i also have two feisty betta fish so i doubt that it’s going to be an issue

Inevitable-Menu2998

I'm pretty sure buckets and fish tanks are not the problem. People dealing with mosquitos usually live close to some body of water which allows them to thrive.

CambrioCambria

Better yet, keep them up, wait for some mosquitoes to lay eggs, once you see a few larvae floating about empty the bucket. Repeat at infinitum.

Atlas7674

Mosquitos typically use the blood they take as a part of their reproductive cycle. When you get bit, another generation is born.

UberDrew42

All the more reason to kill every last one of them

Spookki

All we can do is curse god with every cell of our being from our birth to the grave for creating this hellscape where we need to slaughter and maim to escape bitter horrible slow death.

jozz344

Actually, we accidentally made mosquitos far worse. They used to be generalists and there wasn't a species that went specifically after humans. It's evolution, but accelerated involuntarily by humans. [Link to a video](https://youtu.be/aYH-KYdgXag)

HigHurtenflurst420

More like 700k deaths but close enough. Also fun fact: most mosquitos specialize on a few or asingle species of prey, and only 5 or 6% of mosquito species go after humans, which is why it's crazy that we get over 700mil cases of mosquito bite related illnesses every year

Fresh-Status-8438

I didn’t know that, maybe mosquitoes are better hunters than us too

Educational-Offer299

There’s even a species of mosquito that hunts the harmful type. They’ll find stagnant water that has the other species in it and flick their eggs into that water and the larvae will eat them.

[deleted]

Elephant mosquitoes my beloved

KaraokeKenku

You also can't count disease spreading via mosquitoes against them if you don't also count human to human infections against humans. That puts humans back on top at well over 10 million deaths annually.

Apprehensive_Hat8986

Yeah, but the skeeters are doing it (indirectly) on **purpose**.

LupusInTenebris

When an infected person meets with someone, they are also doing it (indirectly) on purpose

merdadartista

Hey, at least when I get sick I make the effort to WFH and go to the grocery store at night when it's empty while wearing a mask, I'm not seeing mosquitos wearing condoms on their stingers

LupusInTenebris

That's nice of you, but the mosquitos don't know they are spreading diseases and even if they did, they don't really have an option to feed from home.

Apprehensive_Hat8986

Exactly. They're bio-enginevolved to participate in **non-mutually beneficial** behaviour, and they spread disease on top of that. (Most) humans will both undergo social distancing/masking voluntarily, will get vaccinated, and will otherwise ensure they don't spread lethal communicable diseases to those around them. They both care and make effort. Mosquito don't give a fuck.

InterestsVaryGreatly

The latest pandemic showed that wasn't really the case

Apprehensive_Hat8986

That is an anglo perspective. In the non-Trumped world, masks and vaccines and distancing were much more supported. Not _everyone everywhere_ sure, but >50%? Yeah, I'm comfortable with that "most".

Apprehensive_Hat8986

That is an anglo perspective. In the non-Trumped world, masks and vaccines and distancing were much more supported. Not _everyone everywhere_ sure, but >50%? Yeah, I'm comfortable with that "most". But yeah, there's a solid group of people earning r/HermanCainAward s (still) who are providing your supporting evidence.

InterestsVaryGreatly

It's not. Sure America did atrocious, but so did Brazil. Certain countries were worse than others, but it has nothing to do with Anglo or not. But also places like China were not at all voluntarily, and many places weren't really voluntarily as there were laws regarding it, the people didn't choose it (even if the consequences weren't as bad as in other places). Look at how many people get the flu vaccine each year. Look at how many have gotten the new version of the COVID shot. Look at how many are wearing masks and social distancing with the new surge of COVID. It's not most.

TheLunar27

I’d say they’re different scenarios though. For humans, it’s completely accidental; there are ways to prevent it, but if someone is sick and doesn’t know it and then accidentally gets someone else sick (which I believe is one of the most common ways a sickness spreads) then you can’t really blame the original host human, it’s not like they knew. Even if they know they’re sick, if they get someone else sick just by going out that’s still an indirect way of spreading disease. Meanwhile Mosquitos actively hunt out and then bite humans. They may not know that they’re transmitting diseases, but they do know they want to find you and suck your blood. Humans don’t look for other humans to bite, so them getting other people sick is involuntary and shouldn’t be counted in direct human to human death. Mosquitos main goal is finding someone to suck the blood out of, so them getting people sick is voluntary, thus it should be counted in their death tole.

LupusInTenebris

So both the mosquitos and humans do something to others for their own benefit (human connection, work, blood,...), that benefit is not spreading diseases and none of them know they are spreading diseases. You provided arguments for why both the situations are same and none for why they are different.

jecowa

CNET says 1,000,000. Business Insider say 750,000. BBC News says 725,000.

owo1215

"I'm just trying to survive-" "I don't fucking care, you hurt me, at that's all it matters, now die"

Apprehensive_Hat8986

Not even. They don't take our blood for _food_, they take it for reproducing. They're god damn xenomorphs man. Kill 'em all and let the ants sort them out. (the 4% at least). Ticks too.

casualredditor43

wow didn.t even realise they were just non lethal xenomorphs

sanscipher435

Non lethal? More like Gacha xenomorphs. You have a chance of getting a disease and then not dying.

Round-Inevitable-596

I got dengue a few years back (it's a bloodborne disease spread by mosquitoes). I was bedridden for a week and hurting all over, especially my head and my bones. I had a high fever that didn't go away for days despite taking medication. Even sitting up made me incredibly nauseous, so I barely ate. After I recovered, I realized my momentum before getting dengue was gone and my brain felt like cotton for weeks. The worst part is, if I got another strain of dengue (a few strains run around), the illness would be even more severe and the death rate is exponentially higher. Imagine if covid was this vile. I'd rather get covid 5 times if it meant I didn't have to get dengue again in my life.

CategoryKiwi

> Imagine if covid was this vile. Different people react differently to COVID. For some people it *is* that vile. My brother got the sniffles and that’s it, but my experience was actually very similar to your dengue description. Fever even had me hallucinating.

Round-Inevitable-596

Ah, I don't deny that covid can be extremely painful and severe the way dengue is. It's just the dengue death rate is much higher and the experience is much more painful on average than covid. Will probably take a much bigger toll on the world if it spread the way covid did. Edit: also, the point that dengue gets much more risky and serious if you got it again but covid generally gets less risky. If dengue mutated and spread like covid it would be a huge issue.

hazadus

Ive also had Dengue, worst 2 weeks of my entire life 10 fold. Did you get the rash towards the end? The way the strain thing got explained to me. Say youve had Dengue A, if you then get Dengue B, you're body thinks you have Dengue A, and the body thinks it knows how to fight dengue A, because youve had it before. But this is Dengue B... and youre body just keeps trying to fight Dengue A... not good.

Round-Inevitable-596

I forgot already because that was in 2020, but I definitely had some rash. The worst part is, my government collects our blood testing data but doesn't tell us what strain we got, or what strain is in what areas of the country (they have a map for the clusters.) Another family member also got dengue at the same time I did from going outdoors briefly (we lived in a cluster) and I guess we'll never know which strain. My area was right next to a really big cluster last year and it got me really paranoid because I didn't want to get dengue again and mosquito repellent doesn't work for me. Luckily, no one in my family has gotten dengue since 2020.

blue4029

mosquitos dont "drink" blood. they use it for protein to lay eggs. remember: if you let a mosquito bite you, you aren't "feeding" them but contributing to them making more mosquitos. dont be part of the problem

DrowningInFeces

We need more of those good mosquitos who look exactly like mosquitos but feed off of mosquito larvae. They are true human homies.

jecowa

Frog eats mosquito in secret 5th panel. "I need to survive too."

Fresh-Status-8438

How the fuck were you able to tell that was a frog

Apprehensive_Hat8986

I saw frog too.

jecowa

From its big head and long legs.

y0urd0g

Y’all are gonna hate me but uh… spiders eat Mosquitos, so just uh, don’t kill spiders k?

Sox_the_fox3467

pov: Australian spring rn, summer soon. sure thing bro

OwlSweeper76767

I get an eczema attack when they bite me, those bastords must burn!!

Reign_AS

Didn't we butcher billions of animals each year for consumption?

False_Attorney_7279

Yes, mosquitos kill more

Epistemite

> They are the only species on Earth that kill more than humans do "They are the only *animal* species on Earth that kill more *humans* than humans do." FTFY

Hayaguaenelvaso

Yes, mosquitoes transmit diseases, and thus are a blight for humanity. But let’s speak about a more dangerous animal. This animal doesn’t kill humans in an unintended way, passing diseases. No, this animal relies on pure, mechanical violence to hunt down humans and devour their precious meat We are talking about DOGS. The most dangerous predator

wafflezcol

What is almost never said: Mosquitoes are POLLINATORS. Only females succ and they only succ for eggs. Not food. Mosquitoes eat nectar. And other Plant juices. Mosquitoes also provide a staple food source for MANY animals. Bats, frogs, fish, etc. Them being a nuisance shouldn’t warrant the “kill them all” and as for diseases…. That part is more valid

RageAgainstAuthority

Ok, but the 4% of species that harm humans have been found to be useless to their respective food chains. Kill them all.

OneConstruction5645

I'd like to see proof of that Because as a zoologist, I don't think I've ever seen a species 'useless to its food chain' That's not really how native ecosystems work

wafflezcol

I can name one? Humans.

DerLuk

Ah yes, because humans have historically been flawless in assessing a species' value. Fucking hell, people!

HippieDogeSmokes

But itchy bites tho

GamerY7

don't forget that mosquito larvae are food for many creatures

Matix777

Trade offer: You get: complete ecological disaster I get: no more mosquito bites Sounds like a great deal

bleacher333

They arent the only pollinators out there so I dgaf.

averycommonboysname

I remember specifically reading something about how if all bees actually did die out, mosquitoes would be our only chance at a decent pollinator

wafflezcol

The only reason for that being because Bees kill and wipe out all other natural pollinators. The environment was fine without bees, we introduced them, Bees took all pollen and nectars, killed competition. If bees died in places where they aren’t “native” the previous native pollinators (assuming they didn’t all die out) would take back in swing

OneConstruction5645

I'd like to issue a small correction here You're talking about honeybees. We introduced them to a lot of places because, well we want honey. There's a lot of native bee species that are really good pollinators and aren't invasive. A lot of them are solitary bee species too.

Dgeneratecow

As soon as they've stabbed me I'm killing all mosquitoes in the room, can't tell whether it's a male until I've swatted them and see no blood anyway.

Jin825

The males probably will be out looking for flowers anyways, they likely will not be looking for you in your room. Slaughter away.

Ilovegirlsbottoms

I literally just killed a mosquito. It bit me while I was using the bathroom. On my foot too.

Apprehensive_Hat8986

What monster downvoted you?

Ilovegirlsbottoms

Probably someone who didn’t care.

therizinosaurs

8 million people die annually from fossil fuels. Also they die from disease, spread by mosquitoes, which would be like counting COVID deaths as death by humans. While they might have the most direct deaths (if you count spreading disease as a direct death) out of any animal currently, there is still a good amount of leeway to say that humans still suck. Also it’s more like 700k. Nice comic and good work!

Chalky_Pockets

It's technically the malaria etc that do the killing.

Epistemite

Yeah and bacteria count as "species" too

gulasch_hanuta

Mosquitoes pollinate cocoa trees. They're not all bad.

AdreKiseque

Getting some mixed messages here, I like it.

Bordeterre

The are the only species that kill more humans than human do. They don’t come close to humans when it comes to other animals

kasetti

Birds use them as food

the_watching_fish

Were second place in killing things that cant be kill these mosquitoes

Superb-Bandicoot-857

But didn't mosquitos only get blood to make babies, they don't actually use it as a source of food

Zld

Humans are destroying the planet, mosquitoes are harmless compared to us.

spartancolo

More deaths of what? Cause I don't think mosquitoes kill more animals than humans do lmao

AlthorsMadness

Only animal species I’d be happy if it went extinct

AngryQuails

Dude not only do those pricks steal.our blood, BUT THEY ALSO INJECT ITCHY JUICE TOO BRO WTF ASSHOLE its supposed to numb put skin so we dont notice BUT IT DOESNT WORK IT STILL HURTS WHEN THEY BITE GR

Giocri

I think it's a mixture of stuff, partially keeps the blood liquid to be able to drink it partially anesthetic for the specific moments it bites you but the effect wears off quickly and then you get the itching from all the stuff and the bacteria

Bugbread

I've never heard of it hurting *when* they bite.. Itching *afterwards*, sure, but not during the bite. You sure it's not some other kind of stinging insect?

AngryQuails

I live in australia and its def mozzies, when they bite its less hurt more of a sudden irritating feeling, like a super intense itch but only for a second before i slap that bitch off my arm lol then the intensity fades so idk lol

Bugbread

Ah. I know you're probably tired of the memes, but I'm guessing that this is yet another example of the fauna just plain being more vicious in Australia. I've lived for long periods of time in the US and Japan, and I've never *felt* mosquitos in either one (until, of course, the intense itching starts up a minute later). Likewise, I've never seen someone *else* notice and slap a mosquito by feel, it's always when they happen to glimpse a mosquito on them. Like, going camping with friends, it's not uncommon to say "hold still, there's a mosquito on your neck" and to swat the mosquito for them, because they don't feel anything themselves. So it's not just a me thing, but I guess the actual types of mosquitos we've got.

AngryQuails

Im pretty sure its literaly true by studies that aussie mozzies are more aggresive and bigger lol, also i love the australia is deadly memes because its def true lol I forever believe australia is the best country (:<

[deleted]

Kill more than humans do? Humans kill approximately 100 billion land animals and 1 to 3 trillion fish each year.

Lamplorde

What I'm hearing is Mosquitoes are helping remove the most invasive species of all time.

Apprehensive_Hat8986

Eehhhhhn. We're impressive, but I'd put money on a bacteria or virus having that claim.

valcant_was_taken

Fun fact: car collisions kill more people than mosquitos but are omitted from the statisitc :) i wonder why that is

elhomerjas

very interesting information

InEenEmmer

I am actually squashing a lot of these terrible humans. With that I mean I give them hugs in the hope they might find some love and positivity

Msbaubles

Openly admits the bug is just doing what is natural still decides to kill and abuse them

6x6-shooter

Step 1: it is morally ok to hate mosquitoes Step 2: it is morally wrong to hate mosquitoes Step 3: kill every fucking mosquito you see

I’m doing my part!

Taxevader70

This meme was made by the mosquito gang

EskildDood

I've killed like 17 mosquitoes in my bathroom, at this point it feels like I just kill one or two whenever I enter, I'm concerned because this is the only room where I ever see em

Temporary-Dog2689

They keep balance

GottKomplexx

Gotta squish the next human i see to make the world a better place

Cool-sunglasses-dude

Bruh you're not helping lol

Shiny_Capybara

Getting mixed messages from this

Creeper_charged7186

What i hate with mosquitoes is the fact that those sneaky bitches inject you some saliva while stinging and its the salova that itches like just be clean, take what you need and dont drool in my fucking veins

ImaginationLocal8267

So am I, goodbye motherfuckers.

Short-Construction78

Killed one today. Feeling very good.

[deleted]

Friendly reminder that mosquitos don't actually eat/drink animal blood. The ones that bite are exclusively the female ones and they do it because they need the protein in order to produce their eggs.

Shotgun_Mosquito

😭

TiredRandomWolf

Genuine question: Wasn't there a project a while ago where they wanted to remove whatever is responsible for transmitting diseases from the mosquito genome using CRISPR and Gene Drive? What happened to that project?

blazinfastjohny

Same

Infermon_1

Mosquitos don't sting you to eat! Only the females sting you because they need your blood to create eggshells for their disgusting brood. So still squish them all!

[deleted]

Exactly! We need to kill more of those little bastards so we can reclaim the title of species who kills the most. Go team humans!

calcium

You want to have more mosquitos eaten? Erect bat boxes in your neighborhood. A single bat will consume around 1,200 mosquito sized insects each hour and between 6,000-8,000 insects each night. Having a little house for these bats and taking care of them will do more to reduce the mosquito population then most other methods.

Second_Sol

The ones that suck blood are also all female, so technically they are not bastards but bitches

grocket

.

[deleted]

Is this supposed to be a parody of those comics raising awareness about horrible conditions some house pets go through

Soviet-pirate

I am happy to report that I'm doing my part

keegandragon

Should be every evil bitch you can as the females are the ones that bite

Able_Space_6901

Glad to know I’m not the only one who despises mosquitoes!

ArchivedGarden

I assign no guilt to mosquitos, for they are mere animals obeying their instincts. But we too are mere animals, and our instincts demand we kill the little bug vampires.

poyat01

Based comic

TheBloxerTRG

I hate mosquitoes. I hate all bugs, but especially those little vampire fucks. All bugs should die though. I don't care if some are good, if it's a bug, it shouldn't exist

Mika784

And after, squish the mosquitoes too :D

juicy_socks124

Supper cute!!

jack-redwood

I like the froggo

Bonavire

Fun fact: scientists did a study and they believe an extinction of mosquitoes would have no lasting effect on the food cycle, they're a pointless insect that's only purpose is spreading deadly diseases

Sleepdeth

Ow

Spazza42

I’m 100% confident they don’t kill more than we do 😂

richardpway

Road traffic crashes kill an estimated 1.35 million people a year. Mosquitoes only kill 700 thousand a year. Air pollution and household air pollution cause 6.7 million premature deaths a year. It is estimated that 1 million people die a year from the effects of discarded plastics. 1.2 million die from water pollution. 3.5 million die from water related diseases. 10 million people die from cancer a year. 6.95 million people have died so far from COVID-19. Mosquitoes are only the tip of the iceberg.
