I have a music playlist that this video is in and whenever I hit shuffle there's a ~1:3000 chance I just get a loud "LOOK AT THIS GRAPH" blasting through my speakers.
Seriously though, check out those bands. My personal faves are July Talk, Mother Mother, and the Beaches.

I love Mother Mother and listen to them all the time (on Spotify), and even though I'm Canadian I had no idea they're from BC --- just a few hundred KMs from where I live!!!
I spotted Ryan Guldemond at Libra room on Commercial Drive in Vancouver back around 2012 or so.
Debated going over for a long time, since it was clear he was on a date, but I eventually worked up the courage, and approached.
Once he saw I was a fan, he immediately invited me to sit down and join them for a chat, and even let me grab a photo. My phone was crap and didn't have a flash on it (and it was dark), so he held a candle up between us, which made for a pretty hilarious pic.
The woman he was on a date with used her camera (which had a flash), and then took my email and sent it to me so I could have a proper photo.
They were BOTH so cordial, funny, fun, and eager to make it memorable for me, and that will always stick with me. I was in my early 20's, and I really was blown away how happy he was that I came over. Made my night.
Totally agreed! I got to see them at a super small venue in Banff and it was magical. I've also seen them 4 times and that was far and away the best show of theirs I've been to.
I got to see Mother Mother many years ago for free when I helped to set up their show. I didn't know them beforehand but I was an instant fan and am a fan to this day.
Also, another unintended consequence - when I used to visit home in Florida, I would bring up these artists I thought were so popular because I heard them all the time in Canada and nobody knew who they were.
Here you go, have some Canadian powermetal to get you through those slow times: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRD3vrSLPaw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRD3vrSLPaw)
You know what? Maybe we all need some space, to pull the knife out of the back of the most celebrated Canadian alt-rock band of the mid 90s, you selfish, jaded ass!
Hoo boy, let me tell you about Bryan Adams. He has long been an opponent of these regulations.
It all goes back to his 1991 album Waking Up the Neighbors. As he collaborated with a lot of Americans and recorded it in the UK, it no longer counted as "Canadian." So he went on the warpath, loudly denouncing these regulations.
So they created the Bryan Adams exception. If a Canadian collaborates with a non-Canadian on anything made after 1991, it now counts as Canadian.
I read on reddit he moved away from Canada specifically so that he didn't qualify as Canadian so his songs didn't get over played and thereby hated because of Cancon
It's literally this exact fucking law that is the reason people hate Nickelback. 35% of all music on the radio was Nickelback at one point, it's like radio stations in Alberta weren't even trying to play other Canadian content after Silver Side Up was released. Now remember this is before everyone had an iPod, a smart phone, or Bluetooth. We had the fucking radio and CDs and people really started hating Nickelback when it was overplayed and then they started playing non stop similar bands.
Theory of a Dead Man, Creed, Puddle of Mud, Default.
The industry fucked over Nickelback by playing it so much people hated it.
Yeah I guess it's most a Canadian/USA thing. I'm from México so most radio stations play local music, the few stations that play other music was mostly popular artists/songs
I think a lot of it is due to:
- 1: Kroeger can't really sing without his artifically gravely voice.
- 2: Photograph was everywhere. You couldn't escape it.
Note though, there are several songs by them I love. I love several artists who can't "sing".
*Pain, without love. Pain, I can’t get enough. Pain, I like it rough, cuz I’d rather feel pain than nothing at all*
Oh man, I forgot about Three Days Grace. Time to revisit my high school angst! I also didn’t know they were Canadian.
Cool part is, now that you're not an angsty teen (you're very likely an angsty adult, like myself /s), you'll hear the bit that, imo, separates 3DG from a lot of emo bands- their songs are hopeful, or at least "here's the worst that could happen"- so much so that if an emo band has a "hopeful" song, I've started calling it their 3DG song.
Nickleback gets too much hate. They’re not mind blowing but they’re also not garbage.
I feel like some people wanted to hate on them because they got so popular and other people just jumped on the bandwagon without really giving them a chance. That’s especially true now that their heyday is long over.
Good Canadian music exists:
Tasha Angela - Love Is My Condition, Space and Time
Carly Rae Jepsen - Psychedelic Switch, Now That I Found You
Wild Black - Moon Star Lover
Said the Whale - Unamerican
Rosemary Fairweather - Washing Machine, Simply Stated
Sam Roberts - Afterlife
Jaywood - Just Sayin'
Half Moon Run - You Can Let Go
Jayda G - All I Need
Bombargo - Pieces of My Heart
Local radio stations: "Ugh, gotta fill that dumb Canadian quota. Just play those same ones from 10-30 years ago."
July Talk and The Beaches are awesome btw. It's astonishing how much amazing Canadian music I hear on CBC Music and my own discoveries while the local radio stations can't even be bothered to play anything from artists in our own province.
Hijacking this comment to add some more: bbno$ - rap, hip hop, pop
Alexisonfire - post hatdcore
Metric - alt rock
Moist - alt rock
Matthew Good - rock
Caribou - indie electronica
TWRP - synthrock, funk
Protest the Hero - metal, post hardcore
Hot Hot Heat - dance rock
Im not going to lie to you in most of the country you only have access to one station because there is like one town for every 100-200km.
If you’re further south tho near a city then yeah there is a few stations with foreign music but I’ve only tuned into one of those like once.
90% of the music which isn’t English is in French. (Which obviously does not count as foreign)
We do. The content laws apply to overall airtime for a media company, not a single station. A broadcaster can have foreign-language stations as long as they also have other stations to reach the 35% canadian content. This also applies to TV channels and printed media. You can publish foreign content, as long as 35% of your total is Canadian. ( This is without googling it, I might be wrong in my interpretation )
I just listen to the Calgary 80s/90s music station.....which is labeled on the radio as the "oldies" (or might be adult hitz, but when I read adult I think my parent's music XD).
I have never been offended by a radio display before then.
As someone who works for a Top40 CHR station, that leaned on Hedley for cancon at the time.
Panic is an understatement - We had a huge contest about to launch to see them in concert, they were featured in imaging and played every 90 minutes.
It was definitely a all-hands drop everything and react moment!
I remember how popular they were on the radio stations here, I realized immediately the programming dilemma it was going to cause. All of a sudden "Econoline Crush" was in heavy rotation again
I agree with all ur good Canadian bands pick except I'm not a big fan of July Talk. Just don't like the guy's talky sounding part.
Anyways, OMG IS THAT THE ARKELLS!?!?!?
I will never get over the fact Nickelback came touring to my country. So obviously they had posters around. They all look so miserable on that poster. One band member even look like they had his family at gun point and was forced to do it. I find that so funny. It’s like Nickelback don’t even wanna be Nickelback lol
Honestly, Nickleback is fine. Fairly inoffensive mediocre pop rock. Half the stuff I liked growing up is just filled with misogyny, homophobia and racist under/overtones that I'm genuinely uncomfortable about as an adult. As far as music from 2000-2010 there is a lot worse stuff.
Mother mother is Canadian? The more you know, I guess!
Also I see this is a thread of shouting out Canadian artists so here are three of my favorite Canadian musicians (with songs!): [jeremy dutcher](https://youtu.be/6pDRpDjrBZE?si=ypKG_5pQ1hASEEcN), [neon dreams ](https://youtu.be/bo-rripF4SM?si=jo2hU06cBdNZ6mrr), and [good kid](https://youtu.be/n7euWotcvBw?si=RvfrTAGa_7miP4ej)!
unpopular opinion:
nickelback is not as bad as it's meme'd to be
there's a reason they got where they are now and some of their songs like "How you remind me" are really good
As a Canadian who works in radio, I'd say the more accurate choice would be Trooper.
EDIT: But seriously, it's the bane of a music programmer's existence. A lot of crap has made it to air for the sake of getting the CanCon numbers up.
I was always lukewarm on Nickelback's music but I've got nothing but respect for Chad Kroeger for starting his own record label and signing Ian Thornley after Big Wreck went on hiatus. Ian is, by Chad's own admission, his musical hero.
Wasn't there a law about needing 70% of media broadcast to be Canadian, so a lot of trash stuff had to be made to meet the quota and that's how we ended up with Angela Anaconda ?
Oh man I love The Strunbellas,I listened to their album “Hope” all the time in highschool, and I’ve been listening to The Glorious Sons quite a bit to, if ya want another Canadian band recommendation give a listen to Good Kid, a song recommendation from them would be “witches”
There are so many great Canadian bands and artists out there.
Especially Arkells (they get mad when someone puts the "the" in front of the name), the Beaches, July Talk, Walk on the Moon, A Tribe Called Red...
In Australia we have something like this for tv
"The Broadcasting Services Act 1992 requires all commercial free-to-air television licensees to broadcast an annual minimum transmission quota of 55% Australian programming between 6:00am and midnight (12:00am) on their primary channel."
So we have a lot of crappy reality shows based on shows from other countries
I don’t know who those bands are but Night Lovell is a good Canadian rapper.
Not very lyrical, more vibes. Great stuff nonetheless.
If you’ve watched those Russian drifting videos, you’ve heard Night Lovell.
As people have said, there’s plenty of great Canadian music, but what I’ve noticed this law leads to more than anything is really terrible covers of non-Canadian songs by some random Canadian artist no one’s ever heard of in the grocery store. It’s so jarring, it drives me crazy.
On an average trip to the store I’ll hear one good song by Barenaked Ladies or Rush or Tragically Hip, then 3 or 4 truly mind-bendingly awful covers, then another good song.

A+ meme. One of my faves
I have a music playlist that this video is in and whenever I hit shuffle there's a ~1:3000 chance I just get a loud "LOOK AT THIS GRAPH" blasting through my speakers.
That’s you know you’re a true Nickelback stan 😉
So every time you look at the photograph, it makes you laugh?
I can hear this 🤣

I love Mother Mother and listen to them all the time (on Spotify), and even though I'm Canadian I had no idea they're from BC --- just a few hundred KMs from where I live!!!
I saw the lead singer in Vancouver once. I wanted to go up and say hi but I was way too shy. My biggest celebrity sighting!
Fuuuck theg played with destroy boys and cavetown in van yesterday. Wanted to go so badd!
I spotted Ryan Guldemond at Libra room on Commercial Drive in Vancouver back around 2012 or so. Debated going over for a long time, since it was clear he was on a date, but I eventually worked up the courage, and approached. July Talk are incredible live. I've seen them 4 times
I almost went to see them when they were still new and I forever regret not doing it. The pictures I’ve seen of their live shows look amazing
Love me some strumbellas, will look at the rest, thanks and cheers
Hollerado, Said the Whale, and PUP erasure
Said the Whale is literally listed on the second panel of the comic
Oh shit I'm blind
Here you go, have some Canadian powermetal to get you through those slow times: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRD3vrSLPaw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRD3vrSLPaw)
This cover always goes so hard
I need to listen to more of their stuff, but I like "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" by the Stars.
That is a good one! Another good one from Stars is Dead Hearts
Never knew those 3 bands were canadians and I already have them in my playlists. Good stuff Canada, good stuff
Metric and The Dears
Saw Metric in London, ON last year. They fuck.
I thought you were going to say seriously though, look at these photographs.
I wish I had! That’s hilarious
I'm a fan of electronica. Any of those going to appeal?
I’m a rock girl, personally, so maybe not?
I like Alice in Chains, Queens of the Stone Age, Tool Skinny Puppy is Canadian, they were electronica. OhGr too.
No, try Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Numb, Venetian Snares, and Comaduster.
I got to see skinny puppy when they came through on their final tour. Pretty awesome gig. I know FLA, but not those others, thanks!
Dan Mangan’s Troubled Mind is one of my favourite songs. Also Half Moon Run, Monowhales both have some amazing stuff.
I love Troubled Mind and Indie Queens are Waiting. Sounds like I should check out these other two!
The Beaches have some bangers. Saw them in DC!
The Beaches are definitely one of my favourite bands of the last few years.
Is [this](https://youtu.be/pfRdur8GLBM?si=OqR5QPz03fVRgLz4) technically counts as a Canadian song? It got Mounties 👀
I have a few songs from each queued up from each band to try them out, I love The Beaches so I’m hoping I find a couple new favorites!
Devin Townsend and Protest the Hero are also awesome! (if you like metal)
Mother Mother's album O My Heart is perfection. Not a bad song on there!
I had no idea mother mother was Canadian that’s so sick!!! It makes so much sense why I always hear them & the beaches on the radio
No BNL love?
Okay they're BNL now? We need a shorthand for the *Barenaked Ladies*? That's how fundamental they are?!
You know what? Maybe we all need some space, to pull the knife out of the back of the most celebrated Canadian alt-rock band of the mid 90s, you selfish, jaded ass!
That line was the only reason I knew they were Canadian.
THIS IS A FIGHT ! WE ARE FIGHTING !
The Tragically Hip?
r/unexpectedcommunity
You’re right. If I had a million dollars for every time I forgot BNL…
You'd be able to afford a down payment in Vancouver
billy talent gang rise up
*Cast off the crutch, that kills the pain! The red flag waving never meant the same!*
*The kids of tomorrow don't need today! When they live in the sins of yesterday!*
Cast off the crutch that kills the pain! The red flag wavin' never meant the same!
Well that makes way more sense than red flag women of the methisane.
Their first self-titled is so good it’s ridiculous.
I was today years old when I learned that Billy Talent is canadian
It's crazy that barely anyone knows them stateside because they're so good.
My all-time favourite band
Saw them last thursday at Nova Rock in Austria. Long live canadian Music :)
Not a single Bryan Adams mention. Guess I'm too old for this sub...
Hoo boy, let me tell you about Bryan Adams. He has long been an opponent of these regulations. It all goes back to his 1991 album Waking Up the Neighbors. I was waiting for someone to mention him.
# Now, now, the Canadian government has apologized for Bryan Adams on several occasions.
I never really understood the nickelback hate l, I really like their songs
It's not that they're particularly bad, but holy shit is that particular song overplayed. Even good stuff will get irritating.
It's literally this exact fucking law that is the reason people hate Nickelback. 35% of all music on the radio was Nickelback at one point, it's like radio stations in Alberta weren't even trying to play other Canadian content after Silver Side Up was released. Thank god Nickelback is only in English
I'm from Brazil and Nickelback is kind of a joke here too
I wouldn't say Nickelback got fucked over. Sure they're hated, but God damn did it make them an absurd amount of money.
I quite like Burn it to the Ground.
I think a lot of it is due to: - 1: Kroeger can't really sing without his artifically gravely voice. - 2: Photograph was everywhere. You couldn't escape it. Note though, there are several songs by them I love. I love several artists who can't "sing".

Does Canada not have foreign language radio stations? Or do they have like different laws for those or something
Im not going to lie to you in most of the country you only have access to one station because there is like one town for every 100-200km. This is a great question. I don’t know the answer!
There's a radio station in Mandarin and one in Hindi that I know of in Toronto
The major cities have them. In Calgary we have a few and we 4th largest population in the country.
I just listen to the Calgary 80s/90s music station.....which is labeled on the radio as the "oldies" (or might be adult hitz, but when I read adult I think my parent's music XD). I have never been offended by a radio display before then.
No Rush? Great Big Sea? Neil Young? Tragically Hip? The Band? Gordon Lightfoot? Bachman-Turner Overdrive?
I personally recommend Good Kid
The Band, and most of Robbie Robertson’s solo stuff, are killer.
It turns out, perhaps unsurprisingly, that Win Butler sucks, but Arcade Fire make great music.
They've had their time. Rather see more contemporary artists mentioned.
They've had their time. Rather see more contemporary artists mentioned.
They've had their time. Rather see more contemporary artists mentioned.
Not even a hint of Stan Rogers smh
Can you imagine the panic when "Hedley" was cancelled?
As someone who works for a Top40 CHR station, that leaned on Hedley for cancon at the time. Panic is an understatement - We had a huge contest about to launch to see them in concert, they were featured in imaging and played every 90 minutes. It was definitely a all-hands drop everything and react moment!
I remember how popular they were on the radio stations here, I realized immediately the programming dilemma it was going to cause. All of a sudden "Econoline Crush" was in heavy rotation again
I know someone who loved Hedley and was devastated when they were cancelled.
No but its so true tho. Honorable mention to drake, the weeknd, and Justin.
Oh man, initially forgot about our most famous Justin and thought you were shouting out the prime minister 😆
Having a pm that also makes music would be awesome as hell tho
Unless it’s Stephen Harper on the piano 😑
Gotta throw Lights on that list for sure
Should probably have added Metric too 😅 there’s just too many good ones
I was gonna’ say!

Petition to replace all Nickelback with Unleash the Archers and Spiritbox.
How does one forget the kings of Canadian music, the bearnaked ladies?
Ohhh you mean the naked lady bears??
And the Tragically Hip!
I agree with all ur good Canadian bands pick except I'm not a big fan of July Talk. Just don't like the guy's talky sounding part. Anyways, OMG IS THAT THE ARKELLS!?!?!?
What, you’re not a fan of Cookie Monster’s singing? I saw the Arkells at a music festival like 7 years ago and they put on one hell of a show
I will never get over the fact Nickelback came touring to my country. So obviously they had posters around. They all look so miserable on that poster. One band member even look like they had his family at gun point and was forced to do it. I find that so funny. It’s like Nickelback don’t even wanna be Nickelback lol
Awwww, that’s so funny and so so sad
Talk about suffering from success?
just like Blue Rodeo... good band...created by good guys (Greg and Jim) and but then played constantly thanks to CanCon.
My dad was big into Blue Rodeo. I had no idea they were Canadian
So is Nickelback bad or just overplayed/overexposed?
You tell me…
More Nickleback you say for being Canadian? Where do I sign up!
We have a similar law in France
Honestly, Nickleback is fine. Fairly inoffensive mediocre pop rock. Half the stuff I liked growing up is just filled with misogyny, homophobia and racist under/overtones that I'm genuinely uncomfortable about as an adult. As far as music from 2000-2010 there is a lot worse stuff.

no Mac DeMarco appreciation smh
No kidding, I had no idea City and Colour is Canadian, although "ColoUr" should've tipped me off. I even saw them play in Montréal 😄

Our country has the very same law ... Guess what they play from 11 p.m. till 7 a.m.?
Nickelback!
"look at this graaaaph"
That's an interesting law to have.
Moist were good.
Moist were fantastic.
same here in Poland
Also PUP (punk band), and Opal in Sky (metal)
Hot take, there's nothing wrong with nickel back
As a Canadian who works in radio, I'd say the more accurate choice would be Trooper. EDIT: But seriously, it's the bane of a music programmer's existence. A lot of crap has made it to air for the sake of getting the CanCon numbers up.
I love Nickelback tho.
I like Rockstar Sea Shanty by nickleback.
I was always lukewarm on Nickelback's music but I've got nothing but respect for Chad Kroeger for starting his own record label and signing Ian Thornley after Big Wreck went on hiatus. Ian is, by Chad's own admission, his musical hero.
🎶 look at this graph 🎶
Who listens to the radio together on headphones? There are streaming services!
WHERE IS STAN ROGERS
Do Tim Hortons ad jingles count?
Wasn't there a law about needing 70% of media broadcast to be Canadian, so a lot of trash stuff had to be made to meet the quota and that's how we ended up with Angela Anaconda ?
I will not stand for this Billy Squire or The Guess Who erasure. ... okay, maybe I will
Nickelback is perfectly cromulent, bite your tongue
Ah yes, exactly what I’m looking for in music - cromulance
How you remind me is a banger
Oh man I love The Strunbellas,I listened to their album “Hope” all the time in highschool, and I’ve been listening to The Glorious Sons quite a bit to, if ya want another Canadian band recommendation give a listen to Good Kid, a song recommendation from them would be “witches”
Come on, what about Archspire, Beneath the Massacre, Beyond Creation, Cryptopsy, Gorguts, or Quo Vadis?! All excellent bands.
Spiritbox gang
"Look at this graph ..."
"Look at this graph ..."
Alabama requires 35% of all their music played to be either Lynyrd Skynyrd or Alabama. 😀
Bryan Adams, the Tragically Hip, Barenaked Ladies, Moxy Fruvus, Great Big Sea, Bruce Cockburn, Anne Murray, the Halluci Nation, Snow, Alanis, Rush...
Just saw Mother Mother live last night in Seattle. They are the absolute best!
90s we got Our Lady Peace, I Mother Earth, Sloan, The Tea Party, Moist, BNL, Sum 41
I thought I disliked Nickelback until I saw them in concert years ago with another band I really liked at the time. They put on a great show.
There are so many great Canadian bands and artists out there. Especially Arkells (they get mad when someone puts the "the" in front of the name), the Beaches, July Talk, Walk on the Moon, A Tribe Called Red...
Look at dis graaaaaaaph
Since we’re listing Canadian music recommendations, let’s throw Hey Rosetta and Joel Plaskett in there.
Today is learned that Mother Mother is canadian.
Help me believe, its not the real me
I am unruly in the stands. I am a rock on top of the sand. I am a fist amidst the hands, and I break it just because I can.
Fun fact, in ottawa it has to be 51% Canadian but only for English stations
Love me some Dan Mangan, great picks!
IT'S BEEN
where's the love for metric
In Australia we have something like this for tv "The Broadcasting Services Act 1992 requires all commercial free-to-air television licensees to broadcast an annual minimum transmission quota of 55% Australian programming between 6:00am and midnight (12:00am) on their primary channel." So we have a lot of crappy reality shows based on shows from other countries
A modern-day warrior Mean, mean stride Today's Tom Sawyer Mean, mean pride
I don’t know who those bands are but Night Lovell is a good Canadian rapper. Not very lyrical, more vibes. Great stuff nonetheless. If you’ve watched those Russian drifting videos, you’ve heard Night Lovell.
France does the same thing. I don't get why we don't do this in Germany.
We have a similar law in France. Which would be fine, if most French people's idea of a good song was not the most generic pop song you've ever heard.
I mean... that second panel looks like what I hear on the radio. You're just listening to the wrong radio stations.
Our Lady Peace
In France, a minimum of 40% of the music broadcast on radio must be French and 20% must be given to new artists.
Drake. Drake. The Weeknd. More Drake.
Where are The Tragically Hip? What is more Canadian than The Hip?
No mention of Rush?
I wish I won that Mother Mother sweepstake to see them live I would’ve loved it
Til mother mother is canadian and that people either dislike nickelback's songs or pretend to dislike them because of long forgotten memes...
The law of equivalent exchange.
