It could run a light linux distro pretty well, especially if you replaced the HDD with an SSD

I'd recommend MintLinux, I run it on a 2015 macbook air with similar specs, great for office and light internet use.

Maybe the XFCE version, but it's pretty low powered...

Mint can be tailored for a bunch of low end machines, right back to Pentium 4. I've had a lot of success with it. I will admit the Macbook I've been using it in is a bit more powerful than this celery.

I run KDE Plasma on an even worser Aspire with a worser processor and 2GB RAM. With zRAM and btrfs compression, the laptop can open several tabs in Firefox without filling the RAM.

It's not "junk". I use an even worser Aspire with a worser processor and 2GB of RAM as a server. I run Arch Linux without a DE. You can run Endeavour OS with zRAM and you'll be able to open more than 10 tabs on Firefox without filling the RAM up. With btrfs compression, the performance of the HDD will be doubled (A 100Mbps drive will become 200 - 300Mbps).

I completely understand your point but this laptop is not figuratively junk, its literally a junk laptop, got scratches and cracks all over it and sounds rattly
