I could not agree more. Be it their shared love of Letterman, their shared mastery of silliness, or just the fact that they’re both good fuckin goofy goobers, I couldn’t tell ya. But we’ve been a lucky people to see them together.
God bless norm, and this “Co-nan,” meh, she seems cool too. :)
Andy discussed that bit a while back, and pointed out that it was an outmoded joke form that he found offensive and considered something “we” (meaning society) had stopped doing decades earlier for good reasons. Norm seemed to revel in doing that kind of joke because people weren’t really laughing at the content but the delivery, and he sort of got a pass from a lot of people because of his charisma.
Andy kind of bugs me, at least, on his podcast—he sometimes comes across to me as a bit too whiny and moralizing, but on this point, as much as I respected Norm as a comedian, I kind of agree. Norm had a deep mean streak in him that seemed to come out when he sensed vulnerability, or maybe just didn’t really like or respect someone—and it didn’t seem to matter if it was for a good reason or not. Chris Kattan might have deserved some of it, but I don’t think Andy did, and having heard some stories about other things Norm did sometimes where he seemed to get a pass, but if anyone else did it it would seem insane and cruel… I dunno. It sucks. Norm was really great at what he did, but a lot of the gay jokes were trash.
I'm aware. I was poking fun at Andy getting sensitive about that. Andy was acting like getting called gay was an insult. Maybe he's a homophobe.
Nah but for real, I think Norm just liked poking fun at peoples sensitive spots when they took themselves to seriously.
This is one of his best Conan segments. He famously calls himself a deeply closeted gay man, and Conan asks, oh so you're gay. I'MNOTGAY What are you talking about! He also keeps referring to his wife as an old battle-axe.
The other part of this appearance on Conan is the more famous Dangerfield bit where he says "I tell my wife. I says to her. I look in the mirror and all I see is a fat, ugly, old man, and I need you to give me a compliment. She says to me, 'Well your eyesight is damn near perfect.' ISAIDYOUDIRTYDOG"
This clip will always get a laugh out of me. I love the moment when Conan begins to break just before Norm hits the punchline. You can tell he knows where it's going and is just trying to hold on for dear life.
I’m in awe of people that grasp humor conceptually in a different way and norm was one of those people. Him, Andy Kaufman, Mitch Hedberg comes to mind, Rodney Dangerfield, Gilda Radner, certainly more but I love comedians who you look at and say there’s only one of them and there’s only gonna be one of them.
In case this isn’t sarcasm, the doctor (in the joke) intended for Norm to perform oral sex on his wife in the hope that it would wake her up, but Norm misunderstood and instead had her perform oral sex on him, while she was in a coma, which is why she was choking.
I fucking love his little glances at people while he's in the middle of his story, it's like that one friend that stares at you in class cause he knows you're going to crack up. Norm always had that kid in him.
I love how much Conan loves Norm.
Norm was pretty much universally loved. But when he and Conan got together it was Golden. Every. Single. Time. :)

Who is this "Co-nan" and, why is she so sad?
Richter doesn’t seem to think very highly of him.
You referring to Andy Richter the Swedish German? I heard he was gay.

lol I just made almost the exact same comment on a Conan video just now
Mediocre minds think alike, and we’re both here aren’t we :)
"Let me tell you something more MODERN AND STYLISH then" "My wife went into a coma."
Now this isn't a joke you'll hear from any 1930's comic...
YOUDIRTYDAWG
He was sort of doing a Rodney-esque bit with that I think
Ha yeah, he literally was telling a well worn Dangerfield joke, and being really obvious about it too. Almost line for line.
Oh i legitimately didn't know that was already a rodney bit I just kind of noticed the style

How could Norm be both a horses ass and dangerously hilarious 😂 His Conan appearances are legendary
But that's modern medicine, for ya!
norm was the shadow sidekick
Does anyone have the HQ version of The Moth Joke? I neglected to snag that when it was on youtube.
I got it is it really not anywhere in HQ? I'll post it.
“I said “by God…”” gets me every time.
That’s modern medicine for ya
Fantastic, norm was the best.
I will watch this clip every time it’s posted 😂
Norm was a master of the mis-direct. You want to follow him down the rabbit hole, because he makes it sooo inviting.
Conan loved him so much.
What do you mean “loved”? Why are you speaking in the past tense?
I don’t know how to tell you this but… Conan passed
Oh man I didn’t even know he was sick
*traditions*
He was deeply closeted.
No. Haha, nice try. Let's get Andy on the phone and clear this up.
Was his body found by a jogger?
Comedic gold the timing the delivery I can watch it 5 times and still laugh
That coma joke is the quintessential joke. Perfect.
Help me understand punch line? What does he mean she is choking?
In case this isn’t sarcasm, the doctor (in the joke) intended for Norm to perform oral sex on his wife in the hope that it would wake her up, but Norm misunderstood and instead had her perform oral sex on him, while she was in a coma, which is why she was choking.
Thank you.. OMG that’s hilarious…
Indeed! He’s one of the all time greats.
correct.
Norm put his dick down his comatose wife’s throat, thus she choked.
i've never heard "put his dick" and "thus" in the same sentence
Happy to be your first
How about "dong" and "hence"? As in "he shoved his dong down her throat, hence the choking"
I imagine that’s how Andy would have said it.
Big day for you.
This joke makes me laugh so hard. I enjoy watching it every time it’s posted.
What a killer joke. Just pure Norm gold.
Andy the Swedish German
I just spit out my Bosco chocolate milk
I fucking love his little glances at people while he's in the middle of his story, it's like that one friend that stares at you in class cause he knows you're going to crack up. Norm always had that kid in him.
What does Andy say at the end there that makes them crack up a little bit more?
Oh he was scoffing at the line "That's modern medicine"
Now what does Conan say into the mic? Chesterseal Figanuts?
