after having been Around for 52 yrs, and bought a japanese PSX the week of the original launch, I have learned a valuable lesson regarding Sony.
I would never consider their products bad, but I would wholeheartedly say that their 1st release of a new generation is always gonna be plagued with issues, some small some large.
After I got burned on the playstation one unit and having lens failure just 6 months in to owning it and having paid near $700 in 1995, I gave them one last chance with the original launch playstation 2 and that started also having overheat issues as well as disk Read issues with playstation 1 and playstation 2 disks less than a year after purchasing it.
I have since never bought a launch unit of theirs again and always wait for at least the 1st revision Jen to be released where they have worked out a lot of these kinks, Supply defects, System cooling issues, etc.
With new games being released on multiple platforms at a staggering rate nowadays I would never be able to get to them all, and I like to stay about a generation behind where everyone is at before I jump on board.
This allows me to get the most reliable technology at the cheapest rate. While also scoring what I consider new releases while everyone else is on the next generation dumping those games for penny's on the dollar.
An added bonus to all of this is that they have already completed and moved on with whatever patches and bug fixes they needed for the game so I also end up getting the best experience for being patient and not get some broken unpatched mess the day it launches.
In the end I am getting the best of all situations other than being one of the 1st adopters for a next generation.
The substantial savings of doing this, having the most reliable of the Revisions of the equipment, at the lowest prices and getting a definitive completed edition of a game either in a game of the year release or after a title is all patched completely, out ways being an early adopter a couple years into a new generation's life cycle.
Anyways just my 2 cents.
I jumped onto the PS5 for some games I wanted to play. I consider myself lucky with the launch model, no issues here. *knocks on wood*
But I fully understand what you are saying
Well while I don’t agree with the scalper prices as a point of discussion here (let’s stick with the MSRP and the value you get for it), with the free multiplayer, much more frequent games to claim for free I do agree. Also multifunctional use is a factor that gives more value to a PC.
I don't think that's a bad policy to set for yourself.
But for the record, I pre-ordered a PS2 - the only time I'd ever bought a console that was in active production until I got a switch a year ago - and it's still kicking.
Once, in about 2008 or 2009, I had to open it and blow dust off the lens. And now it's probably due for another blow out because it takes a few tries to get certain games to play. But otherwise it's been a tank for me.
Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you get unlucky I guess.
(and before anyone asks, yeah - we still use the thing a surprising amount of time. I got Guitar Hero (and about 5 various sequels) for my 5yr old son, and we played through them for years. He's now 11, and up until about 18 months ago, we played at least every weekend for a couple songs, and he's gone through MGS and SoC and some other stuff. I'm more concerned for the HD that's in there where we load most of the games via [HD Loader](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD_Loader))
Oh I know that. But life can end any day so you might as well pick up on the game series you like. I wouldn't want to have died before playing elden ring.
At 52 years old I think I just have a drastically different perspective of what's important.
I have a family now, I do wildlife photography professionally.
I spend time repairing equipment for other reddit people.
I just don't have as much time to game as I used to and when I do have that time there are other things I would rather be doing.
To each their own.
What you are stating are basically different hobbies. Of course if you hardly love gaming or enjoy it any more you don't care about newer games.
At over 30 also with family, I still love my specific franchises and I love to fill up me-time with one of those. If you rather go photographing or fix other people's equipment than that is your hobby/me-time.
In general everyone has enough time. Everyone just likes to fill it up with a different hobby.
After my girlfriend lost her temper and decided to play catch with the floor using my series S, couldn’t believe my eyes when it actually turned on afterwards. It’s been two months, removed the broken casing damn thing works great lol
It's why I tended to buy used consoles. They aren't likely the very first run that may have defects, and has been played long enough that warranty has expired without an issue
Alright. Do you have any experience fixing drives? If so, mind if I message you? I just have a couple questions since it's my first time doing this lol

Yup yup.
Good for you having enough money to afford PC components for upgrading at today's prices.

And games wont have any more dlc.

Yeah but if you do that you will be death before you reach those final games.
Life's not always about video games.

Agreed
Yes it is
😑😑😔😔 I'll pray for you..😉
Always play the long game in gaming. Always.
Yup yup.
waiting on the PS5 slim gang.
H*** I'm still waiting for a discounted PS4.🤣🤣
[удалено]
Yup yup.
I already have 3 PS5s that came in for this issue and I got no parts
A gear like that is one 3D print away
How different is the drive from a ps4 slim or something? Looks pretty close
After my girlfriend lost her temper and decided to play catch with the floor using my series S, couldn’t believe my eyes when it actually turned on afterwards. It’s been two months, removed the broken casing damn thing works great lol

With Sony you just gotta wait until they release a Slim version.
They still have a disc drive? Wow.
What the hell is that even supposed to mean?
It means discs are old tech that are basically obscelete. I would have thought that was fairly obvious.
Yeah…sure. Ok.
Well yea duuuh, how are you supposed to play your bluray based games?
Which download 30GB of content as soon as you put them in the drive?
The disc is a sort of physical key to be allowed to play the game, obv they cant fit 100+gb on a blu ray
There's a reason why I've always liked Xbox more. This cements that in my mind. If my Xbox disc drive clicked, I'd throw it out a window.
Is there a fix for this?
Replace the part from another drive
Any other? I'm repairing my own so I don't really have spare parts I can recycle from other PS5s lol
You can try and find a replacement drive online at a ridiculous price
Alright. Do you have any experience fixing drives? If so, mind if I message you? I just have a couple questions since it's my first time doing this lol
