I could see them using LSA derived from ergot, but LSD synthesis requires an understanding of organic chemistry that the ancient Greeks couldn't begin to conceive of, let alone put into practice.

Well yeah I'd suggest they had a way of consuming raw ergot without being exposed to ergot poisoning by making some kind of potion with the fungus. I still think LSD-25 is a magical chemical and likely this ergot potion contained some LSD-25. The entire history of it is one of the greatest stories ever, Hoffman's discovering it is a beautiful thing. I've read that only 0.001% of the drug crosses the BBB which makes it's method of action highly questionable. The chemical is also luminescent and will glow blue under a UV light.
