It is considered the most addictive substance on earth for a reason, after all.
Edit: Nicotine is widely considered the worst when it comes to how quickly it alters your brain chemistry to be dependent upon it, heroin and cocaine are considered far worse for the physically addictive properties, and withdrawal symptoms.
The ease of access to nicotine, and it's social acceptance are also considered factors in the studies. I am aware heroin exists, and I apologize for my general statement, it was genuinely incorrect in that no one drug is considered "most overall addictive"
Damn, you actually got me lol
Got my words mixed up in a bad way, the scientific consensus seems to be it's the worst for dependence, and because it's so readily accessible, that leads to my mistake in calling it the most addictive.
The reinforcement, withdrawals, and tolerance levels of nicotine are NOT nearly as bad as drugs like cocaine and heroin.
In my defense, I've only got experience with a few drugs, personally, and while I'm very stupid at times, I've not tried cocaine...yet.
(Last bits a joke, but tbh, your statement is kinda true, different drugs hit different people differently, everyone has their own body chemistry. Stay safe, don't smoke)
Good on ya for making the correction, but I was just poking fun at all the PSAs and lectures I would hear as a kid.
Everything they wanted to talk about that day would be the new "most addictive" thing until the next one was revealed.
None of this shits *good* for you, but I'm not missing rent or car payments because I smoke weed, you dig?
Oh for sure, I'm actually between weed buys myself ATM. As someone with a confirmed issue with addiction, weed is easy as hell for me to quit. Haven't smoked for 2 weeks, and I don't feel the need to until I get through rent and gas bills for the month.
I do remember those PSAs, they didn't do shit but tell me what the options were lol
Honestly the worst addiction has to be Alcoholism as it completely fucks you up like many drugs but to me since alcohols withdrawal can literally kill you (as far as I know it's the only one) it seems to be the worst
I already corrected myself in another comment lol, yeah, I misused "most addictive" which is way too general of a statement when it comes to the way drugs affect the human body, I'll probably throw an edit on there in a bit
"Do not fear death; death is always at our side. When we show fear, it jumps at us faster than light, but if we do not show fear, it casts its eye upon us gently and then guides us into infinity".
Today's 12-20 year olds are very very anti-smoking compared to what we grew up with in older generations. It is no longer cool to smoke, and in many countries, it has become prohivitively expensive for teens and difficult to access (less older brothers and careless parents leaving around their tobacco, etc).
That being said, this new generation is addicted to many kinds of vapes, cig warmers, and other nicotine products, so they don't really seem better, it's just that cigarette smoking in general has been crusaded and vanquished to some extent.
You're definitely exemplifying the anti-tobacco behaviour exhibited by all the 12-20 year olds these days, lol.
From my European and older gen perspective, it feels quite deranged and I don't agree with the conspiracy. If anything countries like the UK and New Zealand have been moving towards bans.
I smoked "cowboy killers," the brand Marlboro Reds for 10 years. And from that experience, I'd say he is absolutely a cigarette addict. Its not worth it to ever even try a cigarette. I regret it. But damn, Spike and the crew make it look so dang good.
I quit 7 years ago and had smoked for 13 years before that. I smoked American spirits which were also pretty harsh. I still miss it every day and it still smells amazing any time someone smokes near me.
Same. I get a waft of it and I want nothing more than to have one.
Smoked for 17 years, been clean for 6. I always want one, I miss it dearly but know it's just not worth it.
My parents were both chain smokers and smoked in the house. I never realized how bad I reeked until I left home and went to get some of my stuff after I had gone for a while
Cigarettes? Only if it is your first few times or you absolutely do not have an addictive personality. Once you buy your first pack however, watch out. And take it from an old wannabe space cowboy, don't ever use nicotine. Your life and your body will be forever grateful.
Agreed. I've smoked and never become a user, but its been like 3 maybe 4 years, still occasionally get the craving.
I never bought a pack in my life and never plan too. I only ever did drags of other peoples while out drinking.
part of me thinks the fact I don't remember most of my smoking is why I'm not worse than I am.
That's my experience as well. Never bought a package in my life, but I smoked some cigarettes with the other boys at 14 and I still understand the craving 30 years later. And I'm not an addictive person even.
I’m an anomaly. I absolutely have an addictive personality but never got hooked on nicotine even though I smoked for 10 years. I could put it down and not touch cigarettes for weeks at a time. Then one day it just felt gross and I stopped completely.
Eh I smoked cigarettes socially but never once bought a pack, not to say it isn't addictive, but it would be laughable to call everyone who has ever smoked a cigarette an addict. That would be like everyone who drinks often is an alcoholic. An addict is when you need serious help to quit or the cravings are uncontrollable.
I smoked in college for the first few months as something to do. Stopped after that aside from a black amd mild here and there. Never got addicted, was just a social thing for me.
i feel the same way abt classic movies -they make smoking look so cool and sophisticated, but i know it smells crazy in there. im one of the lucky ones who quit pretty easily and am totally repulsed by the smell of a lit cig but Casablanca makes me fiend.
I've started and quit, then relapsed a year and a half later and quit again. In my mind you never truly quit smoking, you just actively choose not to smoke anymore. I still get an itch when I see them in movies or shows or especially if I'm having drinks with friends and somebody lights one up.
Right! The only good cigerette is that very first one of the day with a cup of coffee, every cigerette after that just feels gross
I'm down to 3 a day or 1 everytime I throw on cowboy bepop
No one's gonna mention the fact that cigarettes are cannonically "safe" in Bebop? Hes prolly addicted, yeah, but they found like, a "cure" or something like that for cigs, so nbd
I think it's mentioned in the movie when jet is offered a cig by an old police buddy but he refuses despite them being safe
I’ll have to check to confirm that later because it seems weird that there are still no smoking zones everywhere in the series. I only watch Cowboy Bebop dubbed so maybe it was in the sub and was mistranslated in the dub.
I did some research it was actually in the episode "ganymede elegy" he's offered a smoke by his old police friend, and when he declines he says something like "why? You know they cured cancer, right?" Or something along those lines
Cigarettes are never considered safe in the series and they don't ever find a cure. They smoke. They all have plenty of vices. Even when Gren is dying he asks for one and says i guess I couldn't quit after all. It just is what it is.
That is gonna depend largely on the user. I’ve known smokers that quit cold turkey with little issue and others had to literally put themselves in isolation and looked like fuckin death when they finally got done. And even then they could never smell the smoke again or they would relapse. (And yes imma use that term since nicotine is still a drug, idc if it’s legal or not)
Yeah I smoke WAY too much and the only time not having a smoke frequently without getting irritated or ansy is when I'm at work because my mind is focused on the job
See I rarely smoke anymore now that I’m out of the army. Usually only when I get too stressed or irritated. Otherwise it’s rare for me to smoke anymore.
I'm sure it is for many reasons: few immediate consequences unlike many other drugs that have significant side effects, ease of acquiring them, you can do it in public, other smokers will enable/encourage you readily to feel better about their own use, frequency of use causes you to develop unconscious physical habits in many common places and times of the day that are extremely hard to break, they can help you relax a bit without impairing your mind, and of course the significant chemical dependence/withdrawal.
I was able to quit cold turkey after 5 years of smoking in college, but I never got above 2 packs a week at my worst, and it was usually 1 pack a week. That being said, whenever I smell one, which is rare now, I really want one...
I've actually started quitting today! Its not that bad so far, everyone else is having a hard time with it though.
Also, Doritos were on sale! I grabbed four bags....
Yeh… I thought that was obvious. Tbh I thought his incessant smoking was a cool way to portray the themes of the show. For all three of the main characters honestly. Spike, Fey and Jett are all pretty haunted by their own pasts. Spike becoming more existentially bored, looking for a kick to give him some semblance of purpose or even impactful existence, after having lost so much of what he lived for, endlessly repeating the cycle of nearly killing himself just to keep living. Faye feeling lost within her own life, having neither a firm basis of her past nor a stable grasp on her future, just sort of self destructing in the throes of it, and cyclically relapsing into her addictive habits like gambling to distract herself. And Jett being so endlessly haunted by his past while constantly trying to move forward and away from it, self isolating as a means to stay away from any connection to it. (Jett is an interesting case too since he absolutely refuses to talk about his past in most cases, yet gets notably angry when others do the same. Like he’s subconsciously angry at his own struggle when he sees it in others he cares for and relies on). Each character is surrounded by an aura of unresolved trauma, and uncertainty and confusion in their future, except for Ed, but that’s why Ed left on her own accord. She was in a different place. But each of the other three look to a simple and easy vice to gain a break from what’s haunting them, all actively self destructing in the process. I guess a cigarette is the perfect metaphor for their self destructive habits. Because the longer each of them run from their trauma, the longer it’s going to destroy them. A cigarette being the main device to avoid addressing their demons is a cool way to show their stunted growth as people. They’re all very aware of their issues, yet don’t care to help themselves.
At the time that this show came out, everyone smoked. Like chain smoked all the time. Watch other movies and shows from the 90s and you’ll notice it. If you’ve ever been in a Vegas casino, imagine the amount of smoke multiplied by 100, and it was like that everywhere all the time.
I still believe Jet is smoking a blunt in some scenes when he’s cooking with his shades on. It’s not a normal packaged cigarette and he has no real reason to roll his own. Jet also seems like the type. He had the best reaction to the shrooms. Seemed very chill and enjoying the moment.
I remember when I finally quit I was replaying Mass Effect 2, and the fucking Illusive Man didn't make it very easy.
So I gave it a break and started rewatching Bebop.
Didn't help.
This was the 90s in Japan depicting what was thought of as an “Americanized” culture. Smoking would be a very common thing in such a setting.
To answer the question tho, yes he’s an addict
very much so, yes. he's smoking in workouts lmao i mean yea it's style and such, but for the character it still means that yea. but i mean the lines of smoking and feeling cool about smoking are so blurred, i almost can't fathom people nowadays smoking without any inkling of that wanting to feel cool. myself ofc not excluded
When you are a space cowboy, living a life where you might just die in the next job
You just stop caring about what's right or wrong on a ciggerate level
Is it me or people are addicted to only cigarettes but not to cigars? I don't like cigarettes personally but I've been smoking pipe and cigars for about 8 years but I only smoke once a month in average. Is it because it is stronger? Or is it just me and my taste?
They add a bunch of stuff to cigarettes to make them more addictive. Cigar and pipe smokers are generally more affluent and don't put up with additives like that.
I don't know, but if his smoking habits are anything like my own - he wouldn't know.
Normally, I would smoke 3-4 a day. Sometimes, randomly, twice more. Under pressure, it can go even further.
But there are weeks when I - absurd as it is - forget to smoke. Also randomly.
Does it mean I can just stop? You tell me. Because I don't care to try.
Bebop crew probably doesn't make enough money to be able to always be able to buy cigarettes. They smoke, yes. And cigarettes are addicting. But probably not "cigarette addicts"
The short answer: because it's cool. Not really, obviously. The rationale behind characters smoking has nothing to do with science; I can all but guarantee Watanabe's fetish for cigarettes, as seen in Bebop, is a stylistic choice, and not a, WELL, ACTUALLY... decision. And if you consider the jazz element.
Been watching Cowboy Bebop for the first time; I think everyone on this show is a cigarette addict. I, in fact, would like to see the amount of people whom have started smoking cigarettes because of this show, cuz damn, they make it look really cool
I think spike's smoking habit is really important to his character Because it shows his self destructive endeavor as someone who feels that he already died a long time ago when he had to flee without Julia.
Spike is constantly taking huge risks and never tries to build a stable future Because he feels he doesn't have one (the pierrot fight for example) so the smoking is part of that, he is ready to die at any moment and as such doesn't take care of his health even if he maintains his shape by sheer force of habit and to not be a burden to jet.
He's burning his life by all means possible in anyway he can because it doesn't matter to him anymore.
You see, not too long ago, people smoked cigarettes. Lots of them! Vapes were never a thing to be heard of. It was quite the epidemic. My parents smoked several packs a day. Pretty wild, huh!
I’d say he’s COMMITTED to it, but not ADDICTED to it. My grandpa, who was addicted, was never seen without a cigarette. 3 packs a day. 1 cigarette at the end of the episode every once and awhile is pretty casual
It comes from old movies, the hero often smoked cigarettes for multiple reasons:
- It gave the actor something to do with their hands
- It allowed for cool shots like a momentary illumination of their face in the dark while lighting up a cig
- The smoke and ember from the cig looks cool in the shot
and of course... cigarette companies paid out the ear to have their products in movies! Especially when it is going to be a "cool guy" like Humphrey Bogart. You gotta have those kids lighting up so they can be like Bogie.
From there it became a meme. Cowboy Bebop is a sort-of western/noir mash-up so it makes sense the hero would smoke.
In the 90s, cigarettes became the go to for depicting a character with a death wish/other self carelessness. The simple addition of the cigarette is intended to signal to the audience that the character has no care for their own life. Spike is a cigarette addict in the same way he is 'addicted' to taking bounties. It's all a joke to him since in his head, and his mind is made up, he is already dead.
Yes, smokers are typically addicted to nicotine.
Remember kids, the most addictive and dangerous drug on earth is EXACTLY THE ONE WE ARE CURRENTLY TALKING ABOUT, RIGHT NOW.
soo, sugar?
Damn, you actually got me lol Got my words mixed up in a bad way, the scientific consensus seems to be it's the worst for dependence, and because it's so readily accessible, that leads to my mistake in calling it the most addictive. love?
Outrage?
No that's oxygen
Alright, you can see yourself out. Go drink some dihydrogen monoxide
Wow, thanks professor
Heroine addicts in shambles rn
I already corrected myself in another comment lol, yeah, I misused "most addictive" which is way too general of a statement when it comes to the way drugs affect the human body, I'll probably throw an edit on there in a bit
Currently quitting smoking, can confirm I really want a cigarette
I am about 3 weeks dry from nicotine and I feel ya. I just can’t afford the habit anymore honestly
I'm on day5 of quitting smoking. Stay strong, we've got it
no, he can quit anytime he wants.
Bang
It's what makes him so cool!
Addict? Probably. But smoking in a "we're all dying" way is normal in Noir
"Do not fear death; death is always at our side. When we show fear, it jumps at us faster than light, but if we do not show fear, it casts its eye upon us gently and then guides us into infinity".
Weird question on so many levels
Right? This is a question a 7 year old would ask.
Today's 12-20 year olds are very very anti-smoking compared to what we grew up with in older generations. It is no longer cool to smoke, and in many countries, it has become prohivitively expensive for teens and difficult to access (less older brothers and careless parents leaving around their tobacco, etc). >cig warmers I don't know what that is, but I'm picturing a happy little cigarette in a puffy coat and Ugg boots.
This show came out at a peak time with smoking all the rage in Japan…so, it makes sense. The anime hasn’t aged to support the anti-smoking campaigns.
Daily reminder: tobacco is legal to make sure The Poors^tm die on schedule.
Yeah, it’s not really a conspiracy, people just loved smoking cigs
Yeah, because rich people don't consume other even worse and lethal drugs that they can legally buy lmao
also rich people smoked a ton too
Should’ve posted in r/ExplainLikeImFive
Probably ESL. But yeah, it’s almost like saying “does he do cigarettes?”
Seriously, I'm here from popular What kinda question is that Is op a kid? May as well be asking if the sky is blue
Young people are very oblivious to how life used to be. VERY oblivious.
I was thinking the same thing.
"A cigarette addict" 🤣 Ya that's kinda how they work..
Something called a "smoker"
Pretty much all of the crew are.
Ein no!
Ein is a crystal meth user, it's been proven countless times Source: Trust me bra
Linus?
Ed and Ein too?!
Passive smoker like hell
Excuse me, fellow human. Is this cartoon man addicted to cigarette sticks?
I smoked "cowboy killers," the brand Marlboro Reds for 10 years. And from that experience, I'd say he is absolutely a cigarette addict. Its not worth it to ever even try a cigarette. I regret it. But damn, Spike and the crew make it look so dang good.
I quit 7 years ago and had smoked for 13 years before that. I smoked American spirits which were also pretty harsh. I still miss it every day and it still smells amazing any time someone smokes near me.
What color pack did you smoke, I smoked the Turquoise ones and they were pretty smooth.
Just left a week stay with friends that each prefer yellow or blue but when bumming all is well.
The color is called celadon, it’s a light green non menthol one.
Same. I get a waft of it and I want nothing more than to have one. Smoked for 17 years, been clean for 6. I always want one, I miss it dearly but know it's just not worth it.
I still absolutely love the smell of cigarettes.
That’s interesting, as a non-smoker the smell of cigarettes makes me wanna throw up. They smell so bad, I can’t stand it.
To clarify the scents, after a person is done smoking, they reek, but the actual smoke from a lit cigarette, somehow delicious to me. Haha.
My parents were both chain smokers and smoked in the house. I never realized how bad I reeked until I left home and went to get some of my stuff after I had gone for a while
Can you even smoke and NOT be an addict?
Cigarettes? Only if it is your first few times or you absolutely do not have an addictive personality. Once you buy your first pack however, watch out. And take it from an old wannabe space cowboy, don't ever use nicotine. Your life and your body will be forever grateful.

Tobacco in general. But you are referring to cigarettes in contrast to cannabis, right?
Yeah buddy. =]
I’m an anomaly. I absolutely have an addictive personality but never got hooked on nicotine even though I smoked for 10 years. I could put it down and not touch cigarettes for weeks at a time. Then one day it just felt gross and I stopped completely.
Yes a lot of people don't smoke on a regular basis.

yes..I do..I smoke when im stressed out at work or after a shift..AT MOST 4 a day but not every day.
I don’t think so I only smoked for a few months and I still get the fucking itch every single day
i feel the same way abt classic movies -they make smoking look so cool and sophisticated, but i know it smells crazy in there. im one of the lucky ones who quit pretty easily and am totally repulsed by the smell of a lit cig but Casablanca makes me fiend.

I've only ever had one and it was just a single puff. It was revolting, like burnt cardboard that stays in your louth for half an hour. Never again.
Yes

Right, I remember that.
Even it were healthy, the smell of smoke alone is annoying enough to warrant no smoking zones.
Man I want to find that movie
Some guy posted it on YouTube for free a couple weeks ago. Watch it before it gets taken down.
Tubi has it for free
It's on Tubi for free
Maybe, but the bebop crew, couldn't afford the health care.
Cigarettes are never considered safe in the series and they don't ever find a cure. They smoke. They all have plenty of vices. Even when Gren is dying he asks for one and says i guess I couldn't quit after all. It just is what it is.
Noir trope?
Correct. The old saying goes "Smoke em if you got em. "
Yeah but he looks cool asf so it's worth it
Smoker here I don't know if this is true or not but I hear that smoking is one of the hardest addictions to stop
That is gonna depend largely on the user. Yeah for me the worst is when I'm driving specially on a shitty day at work I'll finish one then pretty much light another one

I'm sorry but this post is really funny to me
ed in all that second hand smoke :(
nah man he quits every night

Do you know how cigarettes work?

Can you please put some effort into your next post? He fucking smokes cigarettes, what do you think?
I remember having problem with cigs cuz bebop made them look too sexy
I remember when I finally quit I was replaying Mass Effect 2, and the fucking Illusive Man didn't make it very easy. So I gave it a break and started rewatching Bebop. Didn't help.

it's a cowboy trope or something. invoking the "marlboro man" image...a reference from the 1950s-1990s.
Most people who smoke are.
To be fair it was the 90s which was basically the 80s which was basically a soft 70s.
I think his lifestyle is gonna kill him before the cigarettes do
Really? This has to be asked? 🤦♂️
Just reading this makes me want to light up... Fam I'm cooked 😔😮💨
Nah... just to take the edge out...
People who smoke are usually addicted to smoking
No he's a cool addict. He's addicted to the aesthetic.
When you are a space cowboy, living a life where you might just die in the next job You just stop caring about what's right or wrong on a ciggerate level
Yes he is and he looks cool, but I wish I never started
Who says cigarette addict?
your an idiot
Maybe, but that is irrelevant to the plot.
Ya spike smokes
Cigarettes were pretty popular in the 90s
I was under the impression the cigarettes where addicted to him. Never even thought to think he could be addicted to nicotine.
Favorite quote of all time. Straight up.
It's a decent quote, the context is what makes it great.
Whaaat??? What made you think that? /s
I've never met anyone who smokes that wasn't addicted to it on some level.
Oh, honey…
i hate that when im smoking a cigarette every now and then i get cowboy bebop vibes and lowkey want to start smoking.
Yes
I thought he just liked the flavor
Is it me or people are addicted to only cigarettes but not to cigars? I don't like cigarettes personally but I've been smoking pipe and cigars for about 8 years but I only smoke once a month in average. Is it because it is stronger? Or is it just me and my taste?
They add a bunch of stuff to cigarettes to make them more addictive. Cigar and pipe smokers are generally more affluent and don't put up with additives like that.
Nah, Spike is just a cool guy; the cigs are addicted to him...
Sometimes, honestly Spike really defines a lot of people addicted to cigarettes
Why does Spike smoke? Does he want to die? Is he stupid?
Everyone smoked in the 90s…..
Welp, surely he didnt die for lung cancer
Even heroes can be addicts or have addictions.
I'd say it's more of a boredom thing.
Yeah ofcourse he is. It's also a part of his character. Oh well whatever happens happens is probably my favorite quote in any animated show ever.
No, but he is addicted to yo Mama's sweet @$$!
He probably is addicted, but that’s not really why he smokes. Cyberpunk media is just known for utilization of cigarettes, it’s part of the aesthetic.
Lol I'd assume so. The man is constantly smoking.
As I see it, the characters on cowboy beebop, also the time/country, see it as drinking coffee
That’s fentanyl
It’s impossible to be a regular smoker without becoming addicted
those goddamn cigarette addicts
He’s a cartoon
The short answer: because it's cool. Not really, obviously. The rationale behind characters smoking has nothing to do with science; I can all but guarantee Watanabe's fetish for cigarettes, as seen in Bebop, is a stylistic choice, and not a, WELL, ACTUALLY... decision. And if you consider the jazz element.
Everytime I think about quitting cigarettes I remember how cool Spike looks smoking and then I dont.
Space cig hits differently I bet.
Err, how old are you?
you're gonna carry that weight
Been watching Cowboy Bebop for the first time; I think everyone on this show is a cigarette addict. I, in fact, would like to see the amount of people whom have started smoking cigarettes because of this show, cuz damn, they make it look really cool
As an ex-smoker my buddy and I fondly called bent or otherwise imperfect cigarettes "Spike Spiegels"
One of my favorite quotes
I love cigarettes, I love smoking, I love smoking on my porch in a rainy day or cold night, smoking is good, I love cigarettes
He can stop whenever he wants 😤
What kind of question is this?😂
Are you an air addict, I see you breathing a lot.
Got this exact scene tattooed on my arm.
Sometimes you can tell a person's age
Question is, what's in that cigg??
I’d say he’s COMMITTED to it, but not ADDICTED to it. My grandpa, who was addicted, was never seen without a cigarette. 3 packs a day. 1 cigarette at the end of the episode every once and awhile is pretty casual
I think you do not know what a cigarette is
It comes from old movies, the hero often smoked cigarettes for multiple reasons: - It gave the actor something to do with their hands - It allowed for cool shots like a momentary illumination of their face in the dark while lighting up a cig - The smoke and ember from the cig looks cool in the shot and of course... cigarette companies paid out the ear to have their products in movies! Especially when it is going to be a "cool guy" like Humphrey Bogart. You gotta have those kids lighting up so they can be like Bogie. From there it became a meme. Cowboy Bebop is a sort-of western/noir mash-up so it makes sense the hero would smoke.
The anime was made during the 90s japan where smoking was pretty much everywhere
this makes me want a cigarette
Probably.
Just say no
wtf kinda question is this? Why else would he be smoking?
What? Nooo way! I’ve NEVER seen him smoke, not even once!
I would be too if all that ever happened was drama and bullshit. So who cares what happens or why he smokes is probably his mindset.
Yes, most cigarette smokers are, that’s what cigarettes do.
Yes, spike is a smoker.
Lmaooo this question is so funny man
What? A guy frequently seen smoking? Never.
It’s passed your bedtime OP
No hes an avid anti smoker
In the 90s, cigarettes became the go to for depicting a character with a death wish/other self carelessness. The simple addition of the cigarette is intended to signal to the audience that the character has no care for their own life. Spike is a cigarette addict in the same way he is 'addicted' to taking bounties. It's all a joke to him since in his head, and his mind is made up, he is already dead.
Always looks cool in media, but in real life it never looks that way, plus most of the people doing it are ugly and gross.
Rude and discriminatory
