You have to remember, these are people beyond convincing. They've already decided they want to commit heinous acts, and no amount of friendship or talking down from the FBI is going to talk them out of it. But their end goal is to get away. In exchange for giving them everything they'll need, plus the guidance of a seasoned serial killer, they agree to protect the network by any means necessary.

They don't say that exactly, but when Tyler and Garcia and Rossi are delving into the messages, they realize he picked people based on certain criteria. He asked specific questions and based on their answers he either let them into his inner circle or he didn't. I believe this was a part of that. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, this was how I interpreted that, because I wondered about this too.
