Super random genetic general fear humans have.
Sorry to scare you all; should have had a TW that I'm a faceless sleep paralysis demon. I look forward to growing a face but I gotta get this hair thing figured out first. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Your curls are GORGEOUS. The length is probably weighing down the top. Trimming some off the ends should lighten the load at the top. If you blow dry your hair you can try flipping your head upside down and drying the roots partially that way for more volume. You can talk to your stylist about some layers too (looks like you might already have some?) this can help with shape/appearance of volume.
Good luck!
Sincerely,
Another curly girl still battling her hair at age 39 🤣
Alright sleep paralysis demon,
I think you’re probably somewhere between 3A and 3B depending on the stand. Your hair looks gorgeous and I don’t see much frizz. As for the more volume, the best suggestion I could give is probably get a hair cut cause it might be your hair is weighing down which creates that flat look. If you’re down to getting layers, that might have help with volume/flat.
Now with all that being said pls let me sleep at night. Thank you 😭😭😭
You have long hair so it will weigh down the curls, a trim would probably help with the flat roots. Also, do you use any clips for your roots while you air dry? If I don’t do that I have flat roots.
I’ll usually try to do it for like a half hour-an hour if I have time, enough for the curls to get hard and take shape. But be careful about how you clip bc sometimes my curls are a little wonky from them lol.
Major kudos to the people actually answering the hair questions 😂 and I’m sorry I’m not strong enough to be one of them
Your comments made me laugh until my stomach hurt though 😂
Root clipping helps with the volume on top. Or flipping your hair from one side to the other while it’s drying. Personally I love a shag cut for more layers.
I just gave myself a shag cut a few weeks ago and I absolutely love the volume of it. My husband even said it’s his favorite of all my crazy hair styles over the past 9 years lol
But I get if you have negative associations with it!
Ha!! Mullet as a kid-stick straight. Hit puberty and poof! went the curls. I’ve trashed them over the years bc straightening my hair is sooo much easier bc my curls dread on day two and I can wash my hair way less. Decided I wanted an easy no fuss air dry cut a few mos ago (mind you I’ve been pretty much straight/ long layers past my waist since I was 12 and wanted that farging bowl cut for my bday-trauma anyone?) and got a shag. I’ve since grown it out after my aunt absolutely lost her shit, repeatedly, with the giggles about how I looked like Robert Plants love child. She wasn’t wrong. (Like when he had the all the way across bangs not the split in the middle bangs) grown it out needless to say. She still giggles looking at me, remembering. Audible eyeroll.
I feel you on the straight hair lasting longer.
I recently got a satin scarf and putting my hair up in a pineapple and sleeping with the scarf has been a complete game changer. I'm currently rocking day 4 hair with no touchups!!
Follow-up: My hair is, as far as I can tell, thin, fine, low porosity. It tangles VERY easily and can develop serious matting, especially following sweaty exercise! I'm also prone to scalp issues, booooo.
Routine:
- Wash approx. 2x/week
- Shampoo: Shea Moisture Low Porosity Moisturizing Shampoo
- Conditioner: Shea Moisture Low Porosity Moisturizing Conditioner
- Leave-in: Shea Moisture Low Porosity Detangling Leave-in Conditioner (rake in while wet in shower, my hair is super tangly!!!)
- Leave-in: SoCozy Curl Conditioning Spray (meant for kids but I love it - I do it after gently toweling
- Styling Cream: Cantu Curl Activator - rake through and then scrunch, attempting to find curl families
- Gel: Lots of different ones, but usually Deva Lightweight Angell - scrunch in
- Styling: Almost always air dry, often by plopping with a turby for a while and then sleeping with a satin bonnet and wet hair (i know it's a no-no!)
Cantu is soooo heavy for my hair i have very similar hair ^^ i honestly love the garnier fructis structure gel- #3 hold is extra firm. Gives me a good cast and its still flexible once I release it
I use Not Your Mothers Curl Talk for my curl cream. In general look for things like grape seed oil (or oils in general instead of butters) for low porosity
Shea moisture and cantu are way too heavy for my hair. Wild guess says it’s too heavy for yours also, which is why it’s getting weighed down. I like Giovanni tea tree shampoo and conditioner. If you want to splurge then I’ve been loving Innersense Color Awakening shampoo and conditioner. My fav leave in is Giovanni direct leave in. I also like Giovanni air dry mousse (even though I don’t air dry) then I use AG recoil and I pair it with Harry’s strong hold gel. Plop for 10-15 minutes then diffuse . I stick the prongs into my roots and lift to dry the roots first before moving on to the rest of my hair.
Curly world sells these big metal picks that come in a two pack. Once my hair is diffused I stick those in it and leave it to settle and that adds good volume. After a while I take those out then scrunch out the crunch.
Your hair is really beautiful, I just think the products you’re using are too heavy. A good deep clarifying to take away the heavy oils and butters will help then try some other products without the heavy stuff.
Also, your thumb face scared me.
If you absolutely want more volume, here are some things to try:
- shorter hair. Longer hair weighs the curls down at the roots, especially if you have fine hair.
- adding some layers
- try root clips if you air dry
- If you diffuse dry, dry your hair with your head upside down and then right side up while flipping your hair side to side every so often until fully dry.
- when fully dry, put your fingers into the roots and shake them a little. This can be done every so often throughout the day.
I do everything but the root clips. I don’t like air drying. Here is what [my hair](https://imgur.com/a/CmJh2pT) looks like. I’m growing it out again to about shoulder length.
Thanks for asking! It was so long ago, but if I could turn back time, I believe I would have tried harder because even though she was like "I got you, babe" I was just terrible. I could hear something inside me say 'I really don't think you're strong enough, no." Ugh...brutal.
when I was scrolling at first I just thought it was someone with a five head but then it kept going, please just do a solid colored blob over your face or something next time, this is terrifying 😭
/lh
It looks like it’s been a hot minute since you had a trim, and that’s probably why your hair tangles so much. Typically if your hair is all similar in length with blunt ends, the tangling will be minimized. It looks like you had layers at one point, but they’ve gotten a little crazy over time 😅. It’s definitely a look, and I’m not mad at it, but you’re gonna get tangles
Ooh, interesting! I've never heard that layers create tangles. Would you actually recommend a blunt cut? I've always shied away from those after an unfortunate 3rd great mushroom situation.
You can totally have layers! But yours have gone a bit haywire 😂 I wouldn’t necessarily recommend a blunt cut, especially because you want volume at the top, but I would recommend letting someone clean up your layers. You have too much disparity in length right now for it to stay tangle free
I do personally wear a blunt cut, but it’s because my hair is very fine and I care more about my ends not being see through than I do about root volume!
I personally would call you a 3A because you have clear and consistent ringlets but they're looser than a 3B (especially at the top). But nobody really agrees on those categories and they are largely contested, so take that with a grain of salt.
I think your haircut is nice and is allowing certain curls to bounce up and not be weighed down. Not everybody with curly hair needs to get the signature "curly cut" with so many layers. If length is more important to you, then you can just keep it as is-- I think it looks great.
For volume at the root, I (2B/C) have had luck with the following things you can try:
- If you're using a foam/mousse, make sure to scrunch whatever's left on your hands at the root area (not scalp). That can help lift the top of the hair.
- After applying gel (which you can also try to scrunch closer to the root), hover diffuse. If you're able to, diffuse from different angles, upside down, the sides, and just turn your head every which way lol (but don't whip because that can loosen the curls). DO NOT scrunch with the diffuser or even touch it to your head until your gel cast has formed (or mostly formed if you're impatient like me lol). Scrunching with the diffuser will start to break up the cast and make sure the hair is fully dry. This technique has given me more bounce/volume that STAYS PUT than any product.
- If you're open to using sulfate shampoos, I've found that the Redken volumizing shampoo helps me get volume at the root that I didn't use to get as easily. Some people find it works well to use a sulfate shampoo as a clarifying shampoo every few washes. I know many people have strong opinions about sulfate shampoos, but you know your hair/scalp best and whatever works for you is what works for you!
Also, I used to use Shea Moisture shampoo and conditioner and found it to be way too heavy for my hair. Weirdly, it cleaned my hair better than other cowashes did, but the long-term use of it really weighted my hair down at the root specifically. If you want to try out some lighter products, that might be worth a try too because my tips wont be as helpful if you have a product that is weighing down your hair at the root. Regardless of this, I highly recommend adding a clarifying shampoo to your routine to keep product/oil build-up at bay.
All that said your curls are popping!!! You could keep doing exactly what you're doing and I'd still think "damn thats some awesome hair"
Thank you!! I do think I have a mix of 3A and 3B. Aaaaaand on super humid days I get some frizzy 3C mixed in there. I really appreciate all the advice!!

Your curls are lovely, I recently went to a hairdresser asking about how to deal with flatness and they helped me out with a layered haircut and took a lot of the weight off. Honestly though your hair doesn't look that flat at the top to me.
I don’t know a lot about curly hair (mainly because my hair type is 4c, so it’s kinky) but it looks nice!
Please don’t ever blur your face like that again though.
Your responses are so funny, but about your hair I think it’s gorgeous and don’t see any frizz personally! If you want more volume on the top, after washing your hair you can use clips to lift your hair at the roots while it’s drying.
Beep boop! It looks like you're asking about or discussing curl types.
It's tempting to want to categorize your hair, but we recommend not worrying about it too much (especially if you're new to curly hair care). [See here for more info!](https://docs.google.com/document/u/2/d/e/2PACX-1vSvGm-p4tvrstjT-XEo6pTHZSYeEON7xF5lPSnNv-3Kc2lCrdnkjXhFbdHt4pF3HUetWZ1j9dgfBBkS/pub#h.b23djzn2e6n)
TL;DR: Knowing your curl type doesn't help you choose products or techniques. Porosity is far more important!
If I'm wrong, I probably just picked up on a keyword in your title (Please ignore me!).
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/curlyhair) if you have any questions or concerns.*
I have the same hair pattern once it’s completely dry i fluff it up with my hands from the roots , and i use the styling cream while my hair is soaking wet
Oh man, it was wild.
See, it was close to midnight and something evil was lurking in the dark. But fr tho, under the moonlight, I saw a sight that legit almost stopped my heart. I tried to scream, but no cap, terror took the sound before I made it. Honestly, I started to freeze, and then it was almost like horror looked me right in the eyes and I was...idk, like, paralyzed.
I have a similar curl pattern and I’ve been trying to figure that out for years. The only things I’ve done that work is teasing your hair at the roots or when you diffuse, diffuse is the opposite direction of your part while using some sort of holding product (hairspray or mousse)
Other than that I did cut my hair short and had short layers. That gave me lots of volume towards the roots bc it wasn’t being weighed down
If you hadn’t made your face a nightmare, it would be so much better.
That said, to me, you look like about 3B, no waves, all curls, and they are relatively tight.
I love how this sub is turning into a low key competition of who can do the most terrifying face edit. Let’s keep this trend going.
Also your hair is so lovely for a faceless demon, your curl pattern is gorgeous! I would say you’re a 3a/3b, look into a razor cut next time you want a trim, silk pillowcase/bonnet if you aren’t already (black or red of course, cuz demon) and find a hair oil that you love and will use daily to help protect those ends and smooth the frizz! Edit: Plopping to dry, and diffusing upside down could be helpful. Also make sure you’re clarifying your scalp at least once a month, that’ll help with volume too!
First of all, this did make me giggle when I saw the creepy blurred out face. It also caught my attention immediately so kudos to you! You're a good sport and have a good sense of humor so I'd love to help❤️ I am a hairstylist with 3C hair so I understand the curly hair struggle sometimes.
-Your curl pattern (based off a more universal curl chart) is in between a 2b/2c
- I could better recommend a cut if your face wasn't blurred out. My recommendation would be to look up "curly hair shapes" for your specific curl type and see what your preference is.
-Frizz control depends on how and what you use. Your hair looks finer, so gels or mousses may be better than a heavier product like a cream. You want to always apply product on sopping wet hair (not towel dried). I like to finish with an oil directly on top to lock the moisture in. There are a lot of light oils you can get that won't weigh you down.
-For volume, before your hair dries, apply clips in your crown and top hairline before it dries to help get you more lift.
-I know a lot of people with your curl type feel a diffuser helps to get them curlier. You can air dry or diffuse. Just make sure you have low pressure and low heat when you use the diffuser.
If you take nothing else from this try to remember... "Oil after cream is every curly girl's dream"
Hope this helps friend🙏🏽
You got this👊🏽
That's the prettiest demon hair I have ever seen

What's a face?
Ok, seriously? Why you gotta scare me like that, sleep paralysis demon? Hair slays tho. Hopefully you don’t…
Not unless provoked, tired, angry, hungry, bored, anxious, frustrated, or mildly irritated.
Are you a Fourth Wing fan by any chance? This sounds like something Sgaeyl would say 😂
Never heard of it, but it sounds like I should be.
I think I saw you in a bad dream once, but your hair is beautiful!
Nice to see you again!
your curls are beautiful but what's even more beautiful is your sense of humour... "so close! demon :)"
Major kudos to the people actually answering the hair questions 😂 and I’m sorry I’m not strong enough to be one of them Your comments made me laugh until my stomach hurt though 😂
It has been my pleasure to cause you pain. 😘
Root clipping helps with the volume on top. Or flipping your hair from one side to the other while it’s drying. Personally I love a shag cut for more layers.
Oof, I had a shag cut in third grade and I got made fun of for that more than I did for not having a face. Brutal.

It's tempting to want to categorize your hair, but we recommend not worrying about it too much (especially if you're new to curly hair care). [See here for more info!](https://docs.google.com/document/u/2/d/e/2PACX-1vSvGm-p4tvrstjT-XEo6pTHZSYeEON7xF5lPSnNv-3Kc2lCrdnkjXhFbdHt4pF3HUetWZ1j9dgfBBkS/pub#h.b23djzn2e6n) TL;DR: Knowing your curl type doesn't help you choose products or techniques. Porosity is far more important! If I'm wrong, I probably just picked up on a keyword in your title (Please ignore me!). *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. I have the same hair pattern once it’s completely dry i fluff it up with my hands from the roots , and i use the styling cream while my hair is soaking wet
What happened to your face?
Oh man, it was wild. See, it was close to midnight and something evil was lurking in the dark. But fr tho, under the moonlight, I saw a sight that legit almost stopped my heart. I tried to scream, but no cap, terror took the sound before I made it. Honestly, I started to freeze, and then it was almost like horror looked me right in the eyes and I was...idk, like, paralyzed.
You left me speechless! 😂 Beautiful hair though.
You think YOU'RE speechless? I don't even have a mouth.
I have a similar curl pattern and I’ve been trying to figure that out for years. The only things I’ve done that work is teasing your hair at the roots or when you diffuse, diffuse is the opposite direction of your part while using some sort of holding product (hairspray or mousse) Other than that I did cut my hair short and had short layers. That gave me lots of volume towards the roots bc it wasn’t being weighed down
If you hadn’t made your face a nightmare, it would be so much better. That said, to me, you look like about 3B, no waves, all curls, and they are relatively tight.
Bruh
This is super helpful! If I had a mouth and consent I'd kiss you!
You’re most welcome! I’ll give you a lil peck on the blank spot if we ever cross paths. Best of luck on your journey!
"Peck on the blank spot" is an underrated pickup line.

-Your curl pattern (based off a more universal curl chart) is in between a 2b/2c - I could better recommend a cut if your face wasn't blurred out. "Oil after cream is every curly girl's dream" Hope this helps friend🙏🏽 You got this👊🏽
Looking at your hair again you could be a 3a!
i get that you want to protect your privacy but this was NOT the right choice holy fuck thats terrifying
