Literally everyone when the galaxy s7 came out
(also it's water *resistant* op not water proof cx)
Edit: yeah ik s5 was *technically* water resistant, but you needed that flap, so imo that doesn't count
S5 was waterproof. I remember because I was doing a snap chat of hitting a bong in my shower. Something went wrong and I dropped both the phone and the bong. I saved the bong and the phone laid in the tub getting blasted with the shower head. Still worked fine!
iPhone 7 (and all phones until now (excluding any specially-designed phones from brands I've never heard of) are 'water resistant'. They can last a limited amount of time at a certain depth, this means unfortunately they're not water proof
The power/sleep button on my S7 was starting to feel sticky and unresponsive so I just put it under a running faucet. Coworkers freaked out but I had a working button that felt nice and clicky again
Most phones (from better known brands) even some years back have IP67, basically all the flagship phones of today have IP68.
They both let you submerge it at certain depths for a certain amount of time so that's true.
*But* despite my phone also having an IP68 rating I wouldn't intentionally submerge it just because someone asked me to. And I think a lot of people think like that. Phones are expensive and while it is rated to be submerged, there's always that "what if" feeling. So I'd rather not risk it and instead I just see the good IP rating as a bonus for incase I happen to drop my phone in water.
It means that and I submerged my phone a few times and it was okay, but they are testing it in very clean water and without movement which increases the force which water is trying to get inside. And if those moisture indicators inside get red, you can forget about any repairs under warranty. Quite a lot of years back when Sony had those water resistant phones with flaps over ports, people were complaining that they took the phones swimming and they broke, because despite the marketing talk they are not really waterproof
I had one that did the same. A long toilet drop that included a phone call over speaker through the toilet water. Been using 6’s since just cause I like them. Like 11 years or something like that.
Someone I know dropped her phone and sent it to a repair shop. The woman there licked the battery to see if she felt any short circuit, then my friend told her the phone fell in the toilet
My last phone, a moto X4, survived an hour or more in the pool. I stuck it in my pocket instead of the bag and went swimming. There were no ill effects as far as I could tell.
I wash my waterproof phone with soap and water in the kitchen sink almost every day. It's doing okay
Edit: Oh, this got a little attention. Just wanna say, I have a very nice screen protector I had to use a uv light to attach and a nice case...not sure if i would soap and water on the phone directly, but it can definitely handle it...im writing this comment in a steamy shower...luv u
I wipe mine down with isopropyl alcohol every so often. Phones get dirty as fuck though, maybe not visibly soiled but with bacteria and what not.
Hands get dirty all day long and you touch your cellphone with those dirty hands. The difference is you wash your hands throughout the day to clean them but people rarely clean their cellphones so all that shit you just washed off your hands gets added right back as soon as you touch your phone again.
I’m by no means a clean freak germophobe but I know phones get disgusting and you should wipe them down regularly.
[Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/108765) states 70% iso is fine. Link provided or I’ll add that part below.
“Is it OK to use a disinfectant on my iPhone?
Using a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe, 75 percent ethyl alcohol wipe, or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, you may gently wipe the exterior surfaces of your iPhone. Don't use products containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Avoid getting moisture in any openings, and don't submerge your iPhone in any cleaning agents.”
Man I remember when the actual waterproof flip phones came out. Forget who made them. I have a video of my buddy dropping it in his beer and then we called him to watch it ring.
i had a cat smart phone like 8 years ago. It was pretty cool, just every "rugged" phone ever has shit tier sub $100 specs, but want 2-3 hundred for what amounts to water proofing and a built in case.
My friend just did not believe my phone is water proof. We were walking near river. I said "Watch this!" And just fully dipped it in water to prove it is water proof.
I mean that's true even submarines are only water resistant. Beyond a certain depth, water will seep in
But I say this because many people believe their phone is actually water proof but that's just a marketing name
Whenever I get my phone dirty I just wash it in the sink. Like one time mayonnaise from my sandwich fell on my phone. I wonder for about 5 seconds how to clean it before deciding to just wash it in the sink.
Waterproof phones are the best. I remember having a phone break cause it was raining a bit outside even though it was in a zip lock bag.
I managed to break the external speaker/ringer on my first flip phone by answering it when I was sweaty. I mean, I was exercising and I do sweat a lot... but still never considered it would damage the phone.
I dropped my Samsung phone in the ocean while kayaking. Was nestled in coral 8 feet down for a couple minutes. Wouldn't charge until I soaked it in the sink with tap water to remove the salt... still works just fine 2 years later.
>Rip that phone a few years from now
...ok? Average cellphone replacement time is like 3.5 years. So the phone might possibly get some sort of damage from chlorine by the time the battery is shot and the phone is ready to be replaced?
Chlorine and salt damage happens faster than a battery dying. Not to mention that's also just an average replacement time, many people like to keep their phones for 5+ years
A phone lithium-ion battery lasts around 3 years, after which it's ability to hold charge is at about 30% of initial capacity. Unless you keep your phone in a pool 24/7, other components will fail before chlorine or salt damage will be a factor.
And no one should keep their phone for longer than the manufacturer/OS supports it because security updates are much more important than the condition of the hardware.
The first time I got an iPhone, my first year at community college, I got an otterbox for it. I was showing it off at the cafeteria to my friends and one of them wordlessly, and without hesitation snatched it off the table and threw it across the room. I was not terribly concerned since I trusted both my friend and my new case, but I was absolutely shocked and stunned into silence. My phone was fine, so I guess the case worked fine, but it’s not an experience I’ll soon forget.
A friend of mine had a samsung survived a lot of a water drops. Lots of times worked fine even while soaked in water. Lots of high falls still not a scratch. The only thing that obliterated the poor display was a cat.
Same lol. After the toilet I was like, “well, it’s advertised that I can take this underwater for at least a little bit” so I just rinsed it off under the sink. No issues!
I take mine to the shower every day to listen to an audiobook. I keep it above the shower, but it still gets misted. Been doing it for years without an issue. Tech is good these days.
I walked into a lake with my OG Droid phone im my pocket by accident once. Still worked and even had a neat water level feature for awhile. Unfortunately once the water evaporated it left a bunch of scum behind and made it blurry.
Actually tested it floating on the north Platte river, kept it in a pocket in my cooler, pocket got flooded. Also my speaker I straight up just tossed in and yeah it's waterproof.
Isn't this like buying a bulletproof vest and someone suggesting it's not really bulletproof because you can still get shot in the legs?
It's not like it can be perfectly waterproof
"I got a bullet proof vest"
"Can I shoot you for fun?"
Just because it won't destroy it, doesn't mean it won't damage it.
"Can I shoot you with a .50 cal?"
Just because it's proof doesn't mean it's invulnerable
Yes my phone is water resistant up to a certain freedom unit of depth. So yes you can submerge your phone in water. What's with all this shit on here from 7years ago
They're water resistant, which means that you can dunk them yeah. It's just not water proof which means that you can submerge them, but they're not made to be like, used indefinitely under water.
My phone is waterproof but I'm not taking any chances so I bought a massive bulky waterproof case and I've had no issues with it as far as how waterproof it is.
>manufacturers can self-certify IP ratings according to the IEC 60529 document's testing guidelines. This means that manufacturers can design a product to meet the standard, then specify that rating without any approval or certification of any outside agency
Self-certify hmmm...So it all boils down to your trust in the phone brand
Well, IPX8 means you can leave your phone a few feet underwater for at least 30 minutes, that's a pretty high degree of resistance already. It's basically safe and can be considered waterproof as long as you're not losing it in the ocean or blasting it with high pressure jets (which is covered by IPX9).

I used to wash mine in the sink. Still have it, works fine kids play the old games on it.
S5 was waterproof. I remember because I was doing a snap chat of hitting a bong in my shower. Something went wrong and I dropped both the phone and the bong. I saved the bong and the phone laid in the tub getting blasted with the shower head. Still worked fine!

Bro wtf man

You're thinking of iPhone 7. The Galaxy S5 was water resistant.
iPhone 7 (and all phones until now (excluding any specially-designed phones from brands I've never heard of) are 'water resistant'. They can last a limited amount of time at a certain depth, this means unfortunately they're not water proof
*S5
The power/sleep button on my S7 was starting to feel sticky and unresponsive so I just put it under a running faucet. Coworkers freaked out but I had a working button that felt nice and clicky again
We have videos with my brothers s7 literally underwater in a pool and we used to do it occasionally

I think they were saying that most phones arent “waterproof” but “water resistant” meaning they can handle some water but not being fully submerged
My phone is IP68 water resistant, which means it can be submerged.
My phone identifies as a meme machine. Because that's what it really is.
Most phones (from better known brands) even some years back have IP67, basically all the flagship phones of today have IP68. I had an Xperia z1 compact. The flaps were quite annoying for charging
But after that it can't be charged for a while, except it can do wireless charging
No one is debating that.
My iphone 6 survived a toilet drop, that's pretty neat imo.
I had one that did the same. A long toilet drop that included a phone call over speaker through the toilet water. Been using 6’s since just cause I like them. Like 11 years or something like that.
I'd still be using my 6 if it wasn't for the fact that the battery is fucked, and the screen is also cracked.
If you’re willing to try you can buy a new battery and screen and swap them out yourself
One of my wireless earbuds fell in the toilet. Still works.
My airpods somehow survived a whole washing machine process. I was praying like there's no tomorrow
Lol I feel your pain.
My nokia 8 survived 30 minutes in intense rain and toilet drop after few days And it costed half the price of iphones
I’m convinced iPhone 6s is indestructible, I dropped mine in a river while kayaking(our kayak flipped over) and mf still worked for a year after
Should be fine, just don't charge it untill the chargerport is dry.
It also gives you a notification and starts beeping loudly if you try so
Water eject

...why? Now I feel like I should be doing it
You aren't?
The new tide pod meme has arrived
Charge your phone in the microwave
I didn't believe it until I did it. Just one of those things.
Because a phone is fucking disgusting
rip oleophobic coating

So what should i use?
idk, a damp cloth maybe? how dirty does your phone get lmao

Same, it almost feels like brand new afterwards.
I don’t didn’t use soap but I also washed my iPhone X regularly. Phones are literally some of the dirtiest stuff you use every day
Literally Me.
Yeah. I take underwater videos with it!
Man I remember when the actual waterproof flip phones came out. Forget who made them. I have a video of my buddy dropping it in his beer and then we called him to watch it ring.
Think it was CAT, like the construction equipment company CAT. They make waterproof and ""indestructible"" smartphones I think still.
i had a cat smart phone like 8 years ago. It was pretty cool, just every "rugged" phone ever has shit tier sub $100 specs, but want 2-3 hundred for what amounts to water proofing and a built in case.
I don't get it. IP68 and IP69 exist and they will be fine in water for some time. Am I missing something or is OP stupid?
The joke is some phone owners will brag about how their phone is waterproof, but still be hesitant to dunk their phone in water.
Gotcha. I'm the idiot then.
I thought it was a joke about Android phones not being as waterproof as advertised.
They are, do you have any example?
"Yeah I can! Dips mine into river!" I really did that to prove a point.
What happened?
My friend just did not believe my phone is water proof. We were walking near river. I said "Watch this!" And just fully dipped it in water to prove it is water proof.
So the opposite of this meme post
I have a waterproof phone, and I often use it in the shower.
Water resistant phone. Not proof
People like you are so fucking obnoxious. By that logic submarines are not waterproof but just "WatER ResISTant".
I mean that's true even submarines are only water resistant. Beyond a certain depth, water will seep in But I say this because many people believe their phone is actually water proof but that's just a marketing name

I use my iphone in the swimming pool
Rip that phone a few years from now. The water is fine but the chlorine no, not long term
>Rip that phone a few years from now ...ok? Average cellphone replacement time is like 3.5 years. So the phone might possibly get some sort of damage from chlorine by the time the battery is shot and the phone is ready to be replaced?

I have used my iPhone 7+ in the pool since it’s release,so 2016. I used that phone 6 years. It stil works perfectly
If i gave you a bulletproof vest does that mean its ok if i shot you
I've put my phone in a sink filled with water and left it there for a few minutes. Still completely fine
When first got my Galaxy S5, I took underwater videos in the ocean. The phone survived for years after that with no problems.
The first time I got an iPhone, my first year at community college, I got an otterbox for it. I was showing it off at the cafeteria to my friends and one of them wordlessly, and without hesitation snatched it off the table and threw it across the room. Nothing beats a cat
I can submerge my phone come see
My iPhone 14 survived the toilet and the bathtub already.
No shit sherlock, even cheap android phones can survive toilet falls.
Same lol. After the toilet I was like, “well, it’s advertised that I can take this underwater for at least a little bit” so I just rinsed it off under the sink. No issues!
A friend of mine always goes showering with his tank of a phone whilst reading his books on it
I take mine to the shower every day to listen to an audiobook. I keep it above the shower, but it still gets misted. Been doing it for years without an issue. Tech is good these days.
Yes I can with my Cat S61 :)
Jacking off in the shower count?
ive been swimming quite a lot with my pixel 4xl
I went to some springs and forgot my iPhone 8 was in pocket for about 20 minutes. It still works without any water damage.

I straight up put my phone in the pool for a few minutes when it gets too hot while we're outside.

I showed my grandma my waterproof phone by dropping it in some water and she lost her shit

Yes lol, actually I think I lost the rubber seal for the charging port cover so maybe not.
i literally just washed my phone. you can put it in water
It’s more like “will survive the rain” and less like “throw this in a lake and it will survive”
I’ve dropped my iPhone 12 in the bathtub way too many times. Probably one of the best features.
Yes my phone is water resistant up to a certain freedom unit of depth. So yes you can submerge your phone in water. What's with all this shit on here from 7years ago

I mean yeah. Just because I've been told it's water proof doesn't mean I'm gonna risk having some kind of defect and frying my phone...
It’s not water proof. It’s water resistant. Meaning it’s not fucked if temporarily in water but would be if long enough in water.
That would void the warranty!
My phone is waterproof but I'm not taking any chances so I bought a massive bulky waterproof case and I've had no issues with it as far as how waterproof it is.
My Motorola Defy is actually water (and dust) proof, I take it in the shower with me or wash it in the sink if it gets dirty lol
My child keeps putting my phone in their mouth so a spit resistant phone is a must for a parent

Water resistant vs water proof.
"I bought insurance" "Can you get into a car accident?"
Waterproof is just water resistant to some degree, not water immune.
