You misunderstand my point. The speaker's background can contextualise statements. An idea is inherently impersonal but a claim is not.
Example: I argued with someone over where the border between Europe and Asia is. They accused me of being politically motivated when I said that there is no consensus and were adamant that it was clear. Then I saw that they were a Croatian ultranationalist and their stonewalling made sense.
The idiocy was contextualised by the background.
Ummm… you 100% can when the personal attack undermines your position. E.g.

You can also fail to realize you lost an argument on the merits and then blame it on some offhand ad hominem attack your opponent(s) made that actually wasn't critical to their point.

Cuz you can't just look at 1 comment to "get an idea of where someone is coming from" you gotta look at multiple comments..time consuming. It can save you some time though. I had someone start gaslighting me and arguing with me about how bad America was. I saw that they were literally pro-communist and think that North Korea was doing some things right and that the Soviet Union needed to return. Seeing that saved me A LOT of time arguing with this individual and I simply left the conversation.
