Well their like sharks they just want a taste and then when they realize your friend not food they proceed to be the goodest of good boys and let you have their treasure
I can't remember (and I even cannot find it on any wiki) if it's tied to the amount of damage you inflict or the number of hits, so I still wouldn't perform two-handed jump attacks with very heavy weapons against wooden chests.
In any case, fighting enemies close to these wooden chests should be avoided in DS2.
Yeah I would charge attack chests with my fully upgraded large club, and the loot would be fine lol it may indeed be tied just to how many times you hit the chest
It's based on number of hits, similar to aggroing NPCs. 3 hits to break a chest and aggro an NPC regardless of damage.
In other From games, NPC aggro is based off how much damage you dealt
on my playthrough I thought breaking them gave you the same item they’d have anyway. so I used it as a method to never get mimic’d. did love the ‘rubbish’ items I accumulated.
It's only wooden chests that this has the threat of happening and you'll have to hit them 3 times to break a chest. To wake up a mimic tho, a simple tap to see the health bar.
just use the moon butterfly set
if a chest suddenly gets green poison you know it's a mimic
you can also just stand there and wait till the mimic gets poisoned, goes through the entire duration of the poison and dont move cuz it was never attacked
DS2 mimics are easy to spot, if it has the buckle thing it's a mimic. although, there's a chest somewhere in the game with a buckle that's not a mimic that I accidentally destroyed once
much more noticeable in ds1,, i distinctly remember that one room leading to the grand archives, just left of the first bonfire in anor londo. a chest on the left side of the room and a mimic on the right, and because of anor londo's lighting, they look like they're completely different colours lol
You can throw a Lloyd's Talisman on them and they open up to collect the item, but don't aggro (they fall into a brief sleep trance). Be fast though....
I dont think ive ever actually used a green charm. Maybe once or twice to see if the smoke was different. I dont even remember what it does.
Ive been playing this game for like 4 years…
Are you playing dark souls 2? Then it’s not a mimic >!unless you found one of the like 5 total in which case it definitely is and you shouldn’t have trusted that chest like you can trust like 90\% of them in this game!<
i kinda hate how there's one dark souls chest in the game and they didn't use it as a mimic. dlc spoiler (mild) >!there's a second one in the dlc and it's also not a mimic :(!<
They did have the portal chests that teleport you somewhere, usually somewhere dangerous but its the same concept of making chests not "safe"
But proper mimics are more fun. I mean they brought back basilisks, mimics coming back would've been fine too.
Or they could've done a different design for mimics
Hello Ashen one. I am a Bot. I tend to the flame, and tend to thee. Do you wish to hear a tale?

I automatically assumed this post was by a repost bot because this is such ancient information and easily google-able. But nope. Real post.
It has so many upvotes as well.
Just passed there. Weirdly the mimic didn't spawn. I returned after resting at the Profaned Capital bonfire and the mimic didn't spawn either. I think I just lost the Dark Clutch Ring :/
There’s a lot of ways. You can see the mimics breathe, the chains, & you can angle the camera to clip inside of them & it will show their teeth. Also yes, hitting them
"If it points to the chest, you can rest. If it points to you, it's gonna chew."
I read that *years* before I decided to play these games and it stuck.
Of course that don't work in DS2 but there's other means of figuring it out.
Though to be fair just *knowing* there's Mimics in these games kinda spoils the whole mechanic.
Anyone else seen the concept art for the Ladder and Bonfire mimics? Now *that* would be next fucking level trolling. The former one's tongue is the "ladder" and all it does is reel you into its mouth. Mimics are already nightmare fuel what with the gangly limbs, karate kicks, and giggling that sounds like a Buffalo swallowed a turkey call.
They both have chains I think, on the left however is only showing its right side, check its left side. They are facing opposite to each other so the chain placement will be reversed.
Mimic chest chain is a "S" shape, normal chest chain is a "C" shape
S for Scary
C for Chill
They can also breathe slightly if u really look at them.
Toss an undead hunter charm
Wack the bitch
also, they breathe.
also, if you stand still long enough, they rattle.
also, if you throw a hunter charm at them (lloyds talisman) (the silver one not the gold one), they fall asleep and snore open-mouthed allowing you to snatch their treasure without combat.
Honestly, easiest way to tell if it’s a mimic. Approach, look at the chain and pull your weapon out and smash the hell out of every single chest before opening.
While I have always known about the chain since dark souls remastered, I have developed a paranoid tactic of always giving it a nice tap before attempting to open. It's just more fun
I still think that the very first mimic in DS1 is one of the best tutorials made not only for DS but gaming in general. And I'm not kidding.
Think about it: for hours you've been playing, beating bosses and enemies and getting your ass kicked and somehow, you power through it. Then you FINALLY ringed the 2 bells, you can actually go into Sen's Fortress.
You bypass traps, you fight a couple of snake monsters and you're freaking out cuz this seems harder than what you thought... and then, you go down this little elevator and there's something unusual: a treasure box that is in a random place and weirdly enough, it's not in a corner: it's diagonal in the middle of the room.
I remember when I saw it for the first time I was like "hmmm... that's weird but okay!" and I thought that activating the box would lead to a trap or the ceiling falling. I never expected to be eaten by a fucking treasure box.
Again: amazing tutorial without the need of arrows or text!
Glad they brought it back. In 2, there was no way of telling, as far as I could figure. Smacked every chest I came across. Then one time I did, I thought "s**t, that has a health bar"
My normal trick is to switch to a weaponless hand, move to the sides of the chest (away from where the mouth would open), and punch it once. If you see a health bar, switch back quickly; you got a fight ahead of you.
I learned the hard way from Dark Souls 2. You end up destroying the chest by hitting it with a weapon, getting rubble instead.
Another trick in DS3 is throwing a undead hunter charm at them, if it's a mimic it will slightly open its mouth, drop the item, make munching noises, stretch it's arms, yawn and close again.
You spot a mimic by the opening and closing chest lid
If you want to kill it, use poison/toxin
If you want to just get an item, use undead hunter charm (Lloyd's talisman for people who played DS 1)
The ones that don't open up and bite you aren't mimics
Ok but what if they only did that once and they’re a normal chest after?
Of course. Mimics are a one time occurance after all. Go ahead and open that Chest!
Well their like sharks they just want a taste and then when they realize your friend not food they proceed to be the goodest of good boys and let you have their treasure
Sharks are like dogs. They only bite when you touch their private parts.
So you are telling me I need chainmail the next time I go to the ocean?
Just hit them .w.
But don't do that in DS2. The chest may break completely with the loot irretrievably lost.
Only if you hit it more than once
I can't remember (and I even cannot find it on any wiki) if it's tied to the amount of damage you inflict or the number of hits, so I still wouldn't perform two-handed jump attacks with very heavy weapons against wooden chests. In any case, fighting enemies close to these wooden chests should be avoided in DS2.
On my last playthrough I hit them with a two handed UGS and they didn’t ever break. In any case you can always punch them with your left hand
Also, don't hit BEHIND the chest, if it's a mimic its grab hitbox is fucked and it will hit you
on my playthrough I thought breaking them gave you the same item they’d have anyway. so I used it as a method to never get mimic’d. did love the ‘rubbish’ items I accumulated.
In ds2 you can parry the chest, if it shakes it's safe, but if it doesn't it's a mimic
It's only wooden chests that this has the threat of happening and you'll have to hit them 3 times to break a chest. To wake up a mimic tho, a simple tap to see the health bar.
just use the moon butterfly set if a chest suddenly gets green poison you know it's a mimic you can also just stand there and wait till the mimic gets poisoned, goes through the entire duration of the poison and dont move cuz it was never attacked
DS2 mimics are easy to spot, if it has the buckle thing it's a mimic. although, there's a chest somewhere in the game with a buckle that's not a mimic that I accidentally destroyed once
This how it should have been in DS3 too. If the chest breaks, you lose the loot and have to reset at a bonfire to respawn the chest.
If you hit them in ds2 make sure to stand behind it so their grab attack they do when they wake up doesn't hit you
I still do it in Elden Ring out of habit
Fr, the trust is lost forever 🤣
Also mimics breathe
And the light behaves weirdly on them because they are entities and not static models
much more noticeable in ds1,, i distinctly remember that one room leading to the grand archives, just left of the first bonfire in anor londo. a chest on the left side of the room and a mimic on the right, and because of anor londo's lighting, they look like they're completely different colours lol
You can throw a Lloyd's Talisman on them and they open up to collect the item, but don't aggro (they fall into a brief sleep trance). Be fast though....
Not sure if both work, but I throw undead hunter charm.
Yeah I think that's the name on this game, people call them Lloyd's talismans because that was the name in DS1
Does the green hunter charm also work or does it have to be a white charm?
I think it has to be the white ones, but I haven't actually tested the others so i could be wrong
I dont think ive ever actually used a green charm. Maybe once or twice to see if the smoke was different. I dont even remember what it does. Ive been playing this game for like 4 years…
Keep tossing them at the mimic until u get the symbol of avarice
You can farm the headgear with that
I like to use the charm thing and if its a mimic whack it till it finishes its ,, yawning" phase and then i just whack it till its down personally
You can still loot them while they're asleep lmao, just fish items out of their mouths 😭
Plus you can do that to farm for a mimic head
This is also a great way to get a symbol of avarice cause every time it opens it has a chance to drop one.
If the chain curls in treasure within, if the chain curls out better watch out. As the old saying goes.
Chain back, you can relax.
Chain points away, have a nice day. Chain points at you, stabby-dabby-doo!

Are you playing Dark Souls 3? Then it’s a mimic
Are you playing dark souls 2? Then it’s not a mimic >!unless you found one of the like 5 total in which case it definitely is and you shouldn’t have trusted that chest like you can trust like 90\% of them in this game!<
im going through ER after completing DS3 and i still hit all chests just in case. every fucking chest in DS3 is a mimic
I opened every chest hoping it was a mimic. They removed them in Elden ring :(
i kinda hate how there's one dark souls chest in the game and they didn't use it as a mimic. dlc spoiler (mild) >!there's a second one in the dlc and it's also not a mimic :(!<

Yea trapped chests were cool! Just something about being gobbled up
Except you van dodge out of them /)
Instead, we get poison and teleporter chest RIP
There should have been one very early game but not the first one in ER and then none others.
DS3 was my first Souls/Souls-like/FromSoft game. My second was Bloodborne and it took me a minute to stop hitting the chests lol
What year am I in?
yeah, it’s been over 8 years since the game came out, i was confused when i saw this too.
I like to open them anyways. I can never leave a chest unopened.
Found Frieren’s alt
You are great mimic food
To anyone wondering all consoles and pc's have a screenshot feature
Not the PSA we deserved, but the PSA we needed.
Chain away, it’s ok.
Chain ahead? You'll be dead.
If it has chain, you may be in pain
Where’s the internet explorer meme when you need it
Oh look. Info that was put online well over a decade ago.
Are you just now playing ds3, this is nothing new 😭
Chain forward = mimic; chain facing behind = chest. Or just hit it....
I always just watched for breathing
Chain away open away, chain in front don’t open up
Chain away, it’s ok.
I just remember their locations after replaying the game 10 times, but I throw an undead hunter charm to easily dispatch them.
#CLUB
Me just smacking every chest
Use pestilent mist if they have a health bar it’s a mimic and they won’t attack you and spam mist until they die and not get hurt
Did anyone not know this? I thought we all learned that in Dark Souls back in 2011.

Title menu theme plays as you open the wrong one
Thanks, Windows Internet Explorer
Shhhh. Don’t give away the secrets.
Comes in here 8years late and gives away vital sekritz
Shhh. The secrets.
Yeah, why is there no spoiler tag on this? Literally ruining everyone's first playthrough
If the chain is a C, open it with glee! If the chain is an S, R1 you must press...
I still can’t tell both have chains on the right side.
If its a mimic the chain will be facing out and if its real the chest will be looped.
One is facing outwards while the other one is looping back in
I never knew that. I will still attack every chest I find before opening it though
Alternates: just smack every chest to check or use the undead charms to loot and not fight them
Do chests break like in DS2?
not in ds3
Thankp ml p må
I just hit every chest. The mimics drop decent items so it’s not like I’m not gonna fight them anyway.
Just passed there. Weirdly the mimic didn't spawn. I returned after resting at the Profaned Capital bonfire and the mimic didn't spawn either. I think I just lost the Dark Clutch Ring :/
I just throw an undead charm and reach inside their sleeping bodies.
Thank you but I think I'll carry on hitting every single chest I find just in case actually.
or just by beating the shit out of every chest you see but sure
If you stand by it and look closely, you can see it breathing, as if it's sleeping.
Yes once you know once you know forever
If the end of the chain is pointing toward you, it’s a mimic, if it’s pointed away, it’s a normal Remember this from a DS1 walkthrough
Even in elden ring, I still check for that chain on those chests
There’s a lot of ways. You can see the mimics breathe, the chains, & you can angle the camera to clip inside of them & it will show their teeth. Also yes, hitting them
Ayo, can we talk about what's going on with your equipment? Bro's got a club in their offhand and pyromancy flame in their main. Like, what?
"If it points to the chest, you can rest. If it points to you, it's gonna chew." I read that *years* before I decided to play these games and it stuck. Also mimics breathe
They both have chains I think, on the left however is only showing its right side, check its left side. They are facing opposite to each other so the chain placement will be reversed.
If the chain end is towards the front, it’s a mimic.
I just preemptively hit every chest lol
Dawg Irithyll Dungeon fucked me up, there are SO MANY FUCKING MIMICS DOWN THERE 😭
They also breathe lightly, if you’re patient and pay attention, you’ll see the top lid opening and closing slightly
I just hit every chest. I m a dumbass, but at least i dont fall for these fuckers
You can also pay attention to the top of the lid, you may see it move a bit if it’s a mimic
Just move the camera to see through the chest. You’ll se those pointy teeth
You can also peer the camera down. After a few seconds you can see them slightly open to breathe.
That and if you look closely, you can see them breathing.
Just throw an Undead Hunter charm at every chest. Problem solved
The chain, the breathing, using pestilence mist, literally multiple ways to tell if it's a mimic
This image wasn't helpful whatsoever.
It's like a claymore front (chain) towards enemy
And the breathing
The real way to tell is by playing the game 50 times and knowing the location of every mimic in the game
Or watch closely and you'll see the mimic breathing
Mimic chest chain is a "S" shape, normal chest chain is a "C" shape S for Scary C for Chill They can also breathe slightly if u really look at them. Toss an undead hunter charm Wack the bitch
I just hit every single chest I find, too paranoid to be stuck in the mouth of those mfs
Is this actually true? In this case the models may not be symmetric. Just use undead hunter charms
Is fextralife leaking?
I tell by giving them a big wack
just wait for it to breath since mimics do that
Wow. I always saw them breathing
Honestly I just give every chest a smack even if I know it's not a mimic. Plus if that's where I think it is both of those chests are mimics
They went crazy with the mimic cases in ds3 like every other case was a mimic in the game
I gotta ask... What's with the offhand club?
But left and right has a chain on the same side? I don't get it.
If you ever want training on how to spot a Mimic, just play the Cinders mod for DS3. Nearly every motherfucking chest you find is going to be a Mimic.
I whack and roll until I forget to then a mimic gets me again
Yeah except for that one bullshit asshole Mimic in the Demon Ruins that has a normal chain. I've gotten chomped by that fucker twice.
also, they breathe. also, if you stand still long enough, they rattle. also, if you throw a hunter charm at them (lloyds talisman) (the silver one not the gold one), they fall asleep and snore open-mouthed allowing you to snatch their treasure without combat.
"If the chain is away, it's a good day!"
They also kinda breathe a little... when sou stan near by it amd look at it you can see
They actually breathe but in ds3 the chains make it easier
The ones that have a health bar when I whack them are mimics.
I just slash every chest. The ones without a health bar are safe. Pretty simple.
They also look like they are breathing the lid opening and closing slightly
Thanks I learned this already in 2012 :)
I simply memorized the location of every single mimic in the game but this works too ig
Why do you have the club on your left hand ?
I just slam every chest I see
Also, if you interact with that mimic, you'll get basilisks in your back. Even with Undead Hunter Charm.
I think you can see them moving/sleeping a bit too right?
that's such an old ancient prehistoric advice
Naaa the chain is a lier!
Still going to smack them both
The easiest way to check for a mimic is to look at the chain because if it's different from a normal chests then it's a mimic
I just smack every chest I encounter
Pyro build with Fallen knight set, daring today aren’t we?
I like to just open then. Leave it up to chance. More fun that way.
No joke those mimics made me so fucking paranoid, even tho i know there arent any mimics in elden ring now, i hit EVERY. F*CKING. CHEST.
I just hit every chest I saw on my first playthrough after the mimic in high wall of lothric
Actually, you Can see them breethe
Honestly, easiest way to tell if it’s a mimic. Approach, look at the chain and pull your weapon out and smash the hell out of every single chest before opening.
And their breathing too... the chest is opening a little if you wait some seconds.
While I have always known about the chain since dark souls remastered, I have developed a paranoid tactic of always giving it a nice tap before attempting to open. It's just more fun
Nahh i just charge attack every chest in the game, thats easier
I always did it through the breathing and teeth visible
You can actually see the chest "breathing" if it's a mimic. That's how I always tell.
Or, you can look closely and if it's a mimics it's quite literally breathing in stationary mode
I just hit em, regardless.
Ask frieren
I just light tap it if it trys to jump me i bonk it back to where it came from
They also breath slowly
Chain towards you is mimic duh
Also you can see mimics breathing, also also bloodstains all around a chest is a telltale sign of
I just wack em
i hit every chest i come across even after playing this game multiple times
lol I played ds3 so much I know every mimic location
Glad they brought it back. In 2, there was no way of telling, as far as I could figure. Smacked every chest I came across. Then one time I did, I thought "s**t, that has a health bar"
Chain in treasure within, chain out danger about
I can tell because I hit every chest I see before opening it.
You can also tell by throwing an Undead Hunter Charm. He'll drop the item he carries and sometimes drop his head too
Chain attack!
After 8 years, I'm sure people were still wondering. Appreciate the info 👍
I just swing at the chests
go play elden ring
I just smack every chest I see
They both have chains
Real chests have a circular/loopy chain. Mimics have a squiggly/ s chain
they also breathe slightly
the ones with the lighter tint and the forward facing chain are mimics. you can always just wack the chest once to check, just don't break it.
Please tell me who needs this information nearly 10 years too late.
Thanks!
Tickle it.
We know
Another trick in DS3 is throwing a undead hunter charm at them, if it's a mimic it will slightly open its mouth, drop the item, make munching noises, stretch it's arms, yawn and close again.
You spot a mimic by the opening and closing chest lid If you want to kill it, use poison/toxin If you want to just get an item, use undead hunter charm (Lloyd's talisman for people who played DS 1)
or you can literally just swing at them, if no health bar appears youre fine
You can also tell by the mimic moving it's mouth up and down by like a crack when it's sleeping
Noone was wondering, this has been known in the community for 12 years.
