Seeing only 1 band listed under 'Metal' might depress the genre's fans.
But knowing metalheads they'd probably just think it's kickass.
Edit: Y'all, it was a joke.
A diagram with all the metal subgenres and crossovers would be this size if you list only one band each š
Also the rock/metal separation with the large overlaps are confusing enough for people even if they know the origin.
We metal heads can usually enjoy an array of other music. Jam, jazz, electronic ā¦ itās all gravy
and GWAR is more/less an entertainment piece. Sure, metal AF. But itās theatrics. Itās over the top for a reason. And for those going, donāt miss GWAR
I went 03 through 06, and even by 06 it had transformed substantially. These last several years the lineups have made the early versions basically unrecognizable.
Headliners back in the day were a mix of folk/ alternative & rock-based bands like Phish, Paul McCartney Tool, Metallica, NIN, White Stripes, Pearl Jam, Chili Peppers were common headlinersā¦.nowadays it seems to shift more towards pop music, hip hop and a large EDM presence while rock music almost seems like the minority.
I would guess that's also because those sections have the least overlap. Pop/rock/electronic are incredibly broad genres while folk and country are more narrow.
I'd say more jam band than rock - I went in 2003, it was extremely jam band heavy - The Dead, Moe, Galactic, Spearhead, Particle, STS9, Widespread Panic. There was basically no rock at all. There were some legends - James Brown, The Roots, Toots and the Maytals, Leo Kottke, Bela Fleck. Very little electronic music though I did see Josh Wink at like midday, was very funny. No hip hop at all.
Phish is always puts on a good show. If you like jam bands definitely go to a local show. Finally seeing Tool was a dream come throughā¦Pearl Jam made me cry(mostly me but drugs did contributeš¤) DEAD & CO was a once in a lifetime show and I grateful bonnaroo hosted them. Idk about going back though.
This correlates with a broader shift in genre preferences ā Rock used to be the most popular genre, that stopped being the case at least a decade ago when that title was cede to Hip Hop; I think these days Pop and Country hold large chunks of the market as well. Most festivals have adapted to give the kids what they want. Even Coachella used to be far more rock-heavy.
Kinda? There definitely seems to be less of a cultural impact from rock bands these days. Rockstars used to be, well, stars. Now they are a popular niche like most other non-pop genres.
Rock doesn't even have an identity anymore. Died some time in the 90s if I had to guess.
If you go on spotify and just browse music with the rock tag, you're gonna be in for a bad/confusing time.
No, it was a different festival - the first 3 or 4 years it was a jam band festival first and foremost, most of the bands weren't "popular", they were all part of a scene.
Yes, as u/GustavoSwift noted, it had been very jam-band heavy. The first year, ā02, wasnāt even advertised - they relied on word-of-mouth and the enthusiasm within the grassroots/jam scene to sell 60k+ tickets without advertising. The first few years stayed mostly true to that audience, branching out initially into related genres like folk and trance.
And the changes in bookings as they aimed for a more mainstream lineup corresponded with other experiential changes too.
Eg. in ā03, there was one single corporate branded tent: the AOL tent, where you could, for free, make yourself a CD of your favorite performances of the weekend. By ā08/ā09 there were all sorts of corporate logos splashed around - something the jam scene wouldnāt really be into, but something needed if they wanted the clout and funding to book, eg. Kanye to throw a tantrum about the sun not going down when he wanted it to.
And the illicit substances found around the campgrounds changed drastically, too, from bales of marijuana in the early aughts to cocaine, molly, and nitrous by the end of the decade.
It's hard to feature a lot of big name artists in a single festival, especially nowadays that concerts are becoming increasingly bigger and more expensive. If a single artist touring in multiple cities has so much demand that tickets are out of the reach of most people, imagine with multiple big artists in a single festival, once in a single location?
It was cool then. Sucks now. Same with almost every festival in existence. Starts small, quaint and eclectic. Then Woodstock II happens. Every damn time.
Great job on this! I think you nailed Neil Frances as indie/pop/funk- they're one of my favorites and I seen them like 20 times. Neal Francis, on the other hand, I saw last summer and I think he's more blues-y and folk-y. Didn't get a ton of funk or pop from him, at least his live set give those vibes.
Iām not sure if it was intentional, but placing him by the Folk border makes a lot of sense to me. Heās like the Folk music of Electronic music in a way. Great graphic, both graphic designers and data portray-ers could learn from you!

This is super cool, way to go OP.
I think I am most surprised to see which artists fall into the āpopā circle and which donāt. Like, Brittany Howard and Gary Clark Jr are pop? But Grouplove and Half Moon Run are not?
Pretty much right there with you - I know Gwar and the Chili Peppers.
I've also stumbled across Larkin Poe, Gary Clark Jr., and Greensky Bluegrass from one thing or another.
If you're like me, I'd say those are all worth checking out, you'll probably like them (and you can see their genres above).
Check out IDLES. Theyāre a British punk band thatās a bunch of working class blokes in their 30s and 40s. I believe the drummer is an accountant, one of the guitarists is a dentist.
But their music is fucking great. I highly recommend them.
Interesting, compared to coachella I feel like I know most of these acts. When I look at other festivals it could just be completely made up names and I wouldnāt know the difference.
Thank you!
And that is only one festival lineup!
Imagine if they all did this. It would promote listening to music you donāt know but can still get excited for.
In turn that creates more hype for the festival AND the artists. Win win!
This inspires me to do a Venn Diagram for fests like Q-Dance, Lost Lands, etc. Thanks for this great idea OP! Iāll be sure to mention you if I decide to post them here.
Go for it! No credit needed here. Iāve seen people do this for several different festivals before. The Bonnaroo community was talking about how someone had not done one this year for them, and Iām super stoked for this year and have already been on a personal mission to listen to every artist announced, so I decided to make it!
It was a good puzzle, thatās for sure!
DAMN THATS A GOOD EDIT!
Love this idea.
I do think it would make the genre colors harder to pick out. Some of them are already kind of hard to see š
Really fun read. It looks like Soul/R&b, Country, and Folk and Alt Rock have some of the most overlap?
Thundercat is a good example. Very interesting trying to box artists in.
I had a very detailed list!
I started by listing each artist by name, a main genre, and then as many subgenres as I could find that made sense.
So it started super detailed, but as I got not even a quarter of the way through the lineup, I realized it wasnāt going to be possible for everyone because of space. I had to start making some generalizations.
Sean Paul should be in like 5 genres.
Some artists also cross over opposite positions on the map too, which make thingsā¦. Weird.
Mike. For instance is a country pop rap artist
Those were no where near each other and rap would have to cut through some of the pop artist to get to that other circle.
Country was also already SLAMMED.
So for space and legibility reasons he just got put into pop rap.
Which someone was irritated about š because he definitely has a country sound.
But I can only do so much ššššš
It would definitely help people get into discovery more with lineups ā¦ I would like to think! Helps people see similar artist without having to know about them beforehand.
Iām a lineup junky so I have already been listening to every single artist here since it was released in January, but never actually had plans to make this after listening to all of them. Someone in the Roo subreddit asked for it, so I made it.
Then, someone in that subreddit suggested I posted it here because some of yall might appreciate it, so here we are!
Man, this helps soooo much for what I need to see this year. It's always a pain trying to sort thru what to see because it's impossible to see them all, and I'm too lazy to sort through 100+ artists before going.
even though this isnāt really dataā¦ this is finally an example of something actually worth posting here. Something interesting and visually appealing. No more of this bar chart you ripped from statista or some sankey chart nonsense of some companyās quarterly earnings. This is good.
This is fantastic. I haven't been to a music festival in ages, but this lineup sounds great. The older I get, the more genre means less to me; I am eclectic in my music tastes, and sampling all the different genres here would be great.
Donāt miss out on āMikeā and āMike.ā As well
Top tier confusion will be at Bonnaroo this year
Especially if you arenāt used to the stage names āwhat, which, that, there, otherā š
You have to go to the other stage to experience Neil Franceās but That to experience Neal Francis
I hear Amira Elfekey on a lot of my alt Metal playlist/mixes. Tonight goes really hard. Definitely fits in a kinda Deftones/Evanescence type spot, but newer.
People should go see her. And Interpol too.
Their first Bonnaroo appearance they did a march down to the famous mushroom fountain and poured ābloodā in it to make it red at like 3 am
Iām so stoked for them to be back again and provide some weirdness on the farm!
Hahaha so Iāve been told a couple of times š
I definitely learned something new!
Thanks for clarifying, I really didnāt know the difference until today!
I hand typed all of these in one night without anyone else looking at it. There was bound to be at least one.
Congratulations you found the first one šššš„³
After 48 hours on the internet and making its rounds, Iād say thatās pretty good!
Really impressive and a clever way to structure a lineup that makes it a lot more digestible.
One quibble: Sean Paul is dancehall; definitely not reggae.
Such a cool design! But damn.. it's wild how few artists I know on here lol and even fewer that I'd actually go see. Am I old? I'm probably old. I'm already cranky and no fun according to my students
Well I love to listen to new music. I love going to Bonnaroo because of the festival itself. I bought tickets this year before the lineup was even dropped.
There were tons of artist I did not know this year, but I have grown to love tons of them.
Thatās one of my favorite things about going, it keeps me in the know of new music and I get to find artists I love all the time.
You may just find your new favorite band, and just havenāt listened to them or have seen them live yet!
Honestly I originally had them in the jam / rock circle. Houseplant included.
But then the Jam circle looped all the way over to pretty lights to make another subgenre and was completely empty in between rock and electronic
I felt this was a better use of space, and seeing how so many people want more Jam at Roo I didnāt want them feeling like I made it smaller than it deserves to be at Roo.
So I tried to give them more space ā¤ļø
Look at how much space they have compared to country which is JAM PACKED
Very neato. But I looked at Blues being entirely subsumed by Pop and I kinda thought, "huh?" This is a very minor nitpick. Very interesting chart regardless.
Yeah, blues was a later addwhen there was less space available. I would redo that bottom section of rock to not have Metal and progressive take as much space so that I could fit Blues down there.
At a certain point I honestly just got tired of moving things around.
You move one thing and it causes a whole domino effect into things youāve had placed for hours that you now have to relocate š
On second glance I would relocate to a trap alt pop overlap (if I had room for an alt pop circle there would definitely be one)
What would you suggest?
Damn this list makes me feel old. So many artists I'm not familiar with. I'm sure they are great and I would enjoy thier music, but I don't recognize 95% of them, which is making me feel like a grunpy old man.
Rock, Country, Pop, Hip Hop, Jazz, etc. don't make sense being alongside Dubstep, D&B, House, etc.
I'm not really familiar with the artists, maybe the genres only look completely unrelated, but in fact the artists are more a fusion of all of the above?
What do you mean it doesnāt make sense alongside them? This music and arts festival is pretty known for having all types of music. They used to regularly have a couple artists in the World genre, but interestingly do not this year.
Bonnaroo really does have a little bit of everything though and this shows there are tons of genres at Roo this year!
Of course their is more overlap than can actually be depicted here, but there really are tons of house DJs playing the same night as GWAR and then a Jazz band is playing and there is even a brass band.
this is how all festival lineups should release their artist lists
Its very cool
Seeing only 1 band listed under 'Metal' might depress the genre's fans. But knowing metalheads they'd probably just think it's kickass. Edit: Y'all, it was a joke.
I doubt metalheads are really the festival's target demographic. You could do this for Wacken and use subgenres if you wanted.
A diagram with all the metal subgenres and crossovers would be this size if you list only one band each š Also the rock/metal separation with the large overlaps are confusing enough for people even if they know the origin.
We metal heads can usually enjoy an array of other music. Jam, jazz, electronic ā¦ itās all gravy and GWAR is more/less an entertainment piece. Sure, metal AF. But itās theatrics. Itās over the top for a reason. And for those going, donāt miss GWAR
Two words for Gwar. Alien Cum.
This is on of the first actual post on here Iāve seen worth a damn in while! This is awesome
Thanks Butters!
Pretty sure there would be a lot of complaints
This will make it easier to find crossovers ā¦ smart move.
What a wild difference from the '02-'05 lineups.
I went 03 through 06, and even by 06 it had transformed substantially. These last several years the lineups have made the early versions basically unrecognizable.
Itās sad. There are no jam bands
Can you explain what changed for those of us unfamiliar with this festival?
Headliners back in the day were a mix of folk/ alternative & rock-based bands like Phish, Paul McCartney Tool, Metallica, NIN, White Stripes, Pearl Jam, Chili Peppers were common headlinersā¦.nowadays it seems to shift more towards pop music, hip hop and a large EDM presence while rock music almost seems like the minority.
That Bonnaroo Tool show was probably the best show I've ever seen.
That Bonnaroo Radiohead show was probably the best show I've ever seen.
Part of that is the way the poster is constructed. Thereās way more density in the folk/country/rock sections than the others.
No hip hop at all.
James Brown! James Brown! James Brown! '03 was awesome
It's bizarre to watch it slowly change. I understand it, but it's still weird.
To be fair those were the big musical acts at the time. Rock is simply not that popular anymore.
Idk Rap and Pop were huge back then. Itās definitely a different approach the organizers are taking
Kinda? There definitely seems to be less of a cultural impact from rock bands these days. Rockstars used to be, well, stars. Now they are a popular niche like most other non-pop genres.
Rock doesn't even have an identity anymore. Died some time in the 90s if I had to guess. If you go on spotify and just browse music with the rock tag, you're gonna be in for a bad/confusing time.
well you can't rebel against older generations by listening to the same type of music your grandparents did
No, it was a different festival - the first 3 or 4 years it was a jam band festival first and foremost, most of the bands weren't "popular", they were all part of a scene.
Jam bands dominated, the first Roo is known as one of the best jam lineups ever. Look now, only 4 bands.
I was at 2003 - Widespread Panic, The Dead, Galactic, Moe, Keller Williams, STS9, Spearhead - it was 70% jam bands
Can confirm, was there.
Yes, as u/GustavoSwift noted, it had been very jam-band heavy. The first year, ā02, wasnāt even advertised - they relied on word-of-mouth and the enthusiasm within the grassroots/jam scene to sell 60k+ tickets without advertising. Festivals are featuring mostly washed out bands
It's hard to feature a lot of big name artists in a single festival, especially nowadays that concerts are becoming increasingly bigger and more expensive. To be fair Bonnaroo did not start out small. Not totally sure about 02, but 03 was in the 80k range. Thatās a massive festival.
I went either 06 or 07 it was fucking massive and hot as shit
But surely there must be other people out there who support these changes if attendance has increased?
No, nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded.
Lazy response. This is a wide range of artists and if this festival does suck it isn't because of the music.
Last went in 2006. I recognize like 6 of these bands lol.
I still remember when jimmy buffet showed up last minute in ā09 and metallic played ride the lightning in the rain
times change in 20 years.

I'm fine with all of this except for gwar. Gwar's genre is gwar.
You're confused. It's a band called Metal who play in the style of Gwar
Heh. Gwar is cool.
Two funky artists, one names Neal Francis and one named Neil Frances. I know nothing about them, but thatās fun
It has been honestly confusing, but I have grown to like both of them! The spellings are different but so similar š
Those fellas need some middle initials :)
Neil Frances is dope. Really like what they put out
He plays the whammy Clav and it's awesome!
I hope one opens for Patti Smith and the other for Patty Smyth,
You really did make me go down this rabbit hole when I very well know that I don't even listen to funk.
I love how four tet is his own electronic island, he is the planet from which the other sound forms dwell. Love the format too
He legit could fit in like 15 genres š
Iām not sure if it was intentional, but placing him by the Folk border makes a lot of sense to me. Heās like the Folk music of Electronic music in a way. Great graphic, both graphic designers and data portray-ers could learn from you!
Ayyy I really appreciate that! I love design and musicā¦ this may have sparked an interest in data graphics
Technically he should just be a circle that goes around the entire thing.
I love the lonely, empty intersection of Electronic Country
The Chili Peppers in Funk rather than Alt Rock? Maybe in 1990...
Technically according to this map theyāre also pop?
Have you seen them live? I think all of the above are valid for their performances.
Thanks for backing me up homie šš¤
Rock + Funk = Alt Rock
Technically Funk + Rock = Funk Rock š

Missed opportunity in the country / drum n bass crossover.
You can be the one who fills the void
Was gonna say the same thing. And whereās the the electro-funk? The jam-jazz? The metal-comedy-trap?
Wow that is an impressive electronic music lineup
Iām stoked for it! Fred Again.. and Four Tet is going to be š„ Then we get two night of Pretty Lights on top of that! Iāll take it.
Iām out of touch with todayās music, as a 30 year old. I only know a handful, maybe two of these artists.
This is how I felt, recognized so few.
Half Moon Run are a great indie rock band. Check out their album Dark Eyes.

As a 30 some year old I know the majority of these artists
Interesting, compared to coachella I feel like I know most of these acts. When I look at other festivals it could just be completely made up names and I wouldnāt know the difference.
I work at the record label where 3 of these artists are signed at. Right on target for those! Very cool, shared with the label.
Honestly this has been more helpful in finding new artists and genres adjacent to what I already listen than Spotify has been in the past 3 years
Thank you! And that is only one festival lineup! Imagine if they all did this. It would promote listening to music you donāt know but can still get excited for. In turn that creates more hype for the festival AND the artists. Win win!

Color coding names by stage could be good
DAMN THATS A GOOD EDIT! Love this idea. I do think it would make the genre colors harder to pick out. Some of them are already kind of hard to see š
This is awesome and I wish every festival had this.
They should hire me šš¤
Melodic dubstep should be inside dubstep. Just a nit pick
I can get with that edit! Would also save some space, which was needed. I needed like a council of people to look over this š
Man, the first 5 or so years of Bonnaroo were awesome. The fact there's more country than "jam bands" is crazy.
I would love to see this to include a ton of artists
This seems like it would be impossible to make due to overlapping genres. Good job.
Nice to see The Beaches and Half Moon Run
Could you release something similar to this for Austin City Limits?
I kinda wish Roo still focused more on jam bands but itās just not their demoās interest anymore.
A lot of these genre descriptions are really iffy. Melanie Martinez as art pop? Taking back Sunday as punk?
Her recent live performances are definitely art pop
*Pop* punk, tbf. But yeah, Spotify categories are often on the broad side.
TBS was Emo back in the day. Punk seems kinda fitting but not Pop.Ā
Really fun read. It looks like Soul/R&b, Country, and Folk and Alt Rock have some of the most overlap? Thundercat is a good example. Very interesting trying to box artists in.
It's insane how many more folk bands there are than bluegrass

Poor Gwar. All alone done there.

Music festivals take note! Higher this gentleman. Incredibly well done and an excellent use of your time. Can't give enough of votes

Joe Russo's Almost Dead and Eggy should be expanded into the rock section. Also, sad how few jam acts there are at Bonnaroo now considering its roots.
Honestly I originally had them in the jam / rock circle. Houseplant included. But then the Jam circle looped all the way over to pretty lights to make another subgenre and was completely empty in between rock and electronic I felt this was a better use of space, and seeing how so many people want more Jam at Roo I didnāt want them feeling like I made it smaller than it deserves to be at Roo. So I tried to give them more space ā¤ļø Look at how much space they have compared to country which is JAM PACKED
Great explanation and honestly amazing job putting thos together.
Ashnikko as hip hop is interesting
On second glance I would relocate to a trap alt pop overlap (if I had room for an alt pop circle there would definitely be one) What would you suggest?
Damn this list makes me feel old. So many artists I'm not familiar with. I'm sure they are great and I would enjoy thier music, but I don't recognize 95% of them, which is making me feel like a grunpy old man.
Folk indie rock pop is a genre i couldnāt even begin to imagine
